I was in Playa for over three weeks and I passed La Fisheria everyday on my daily walks. I have been wanting to try it and I finally did! WOW, this place is super clean, feels super fresh, and has wonderful service. Don't get me wrong everyone in Playa has been super nice but here they're extra nice and every single person who helped me was wonderful!!! Let's get to the food!!! For my appetizer I got a shrimp cocktail!!! Very good and had soooooooo many shrimps. They did not skimp on their shrimps I was very happy with the portion size and flavor. My main dish was the Shrimp Al pastor tacos!!! My waitress recommended it to me and I listened to her and I am so glad I did because WOW!!! WOW, once again they did not skimp on their shrimp. The shrimp was marinated perfectly with pastor sauce or whatever sauce was on it. That sauce is delicious!!! A shrimp taco order comes with 3 tacos..I probably could have eaten 9-12 tacos..for sure if I come back I will probably get 2-3 orders of taco for myself. Yes, they were they good!!! The shrimp cocktail is good too but the tacos!!! Okay, wait or maybe if I do come back I will try something else because it seems like all their food is flavorful, fresh, and so delicious. This was my favorite dining experience in PDC. Excellent service and tasty food I was seated facing 5th Avenue with is filled with foot traffic. This restaurant had locals and some traveling couples, very low key. A woman came to sing live and was accompanied by a saxophonist ... so nice! I ordered the Blackfish tacos and the octopus tostada. Too much food! All the fish was fresh and everything was cooked well and seasoned to perfection. I received a free tiny glass of shrimp soup (just the broth), as an appetizer or sampler. The chips and salsas were delicious. I had the buy one get one free margaritas - I picked the strawberry both times. Excellent choice, not too sweet. Here is what was ordered: Tuna Ceviche on Tostada Grilled Octopus with roasted vegetables Popcorn Shrimp Squid Ink Risotto with shrimp and Sausage Buttered Corn Bits All dishes were fresh and delicious with really authentic flavor that had bright notes and added punch. Octopus was the best I've ever had. Loved the fact that although the ambience was casual, our servers took care in the presentation and placement of the dishes on our table accordingly. There are times when you know the food as well as the atmosphere is going to be right. La Fisheria is definitely one of those places where you know its on point. For starters I shared a salmon and beets concoction that was amazingly refreshing and yet it was enough to get me full. But you know that is not happening right now, as there is way to much food on this menu for me to be a punk and just give up on an appetizer! No sir that is not happening. Also please note that this restaurant is the idea and concept of TV's own Top Chef. He is very much resected and knows his way around food. I had the seafood pozole and can I just say this was very different when it comes to pozole. I was amazed and yet intrigued by the flavors set forth. Of course I was expecting a pozole taste, but it was different being seafood. And the flavors definitely balanced themselves out, this is a sign of a great chef indeed. Just enough spice but toned down enough so that the regular Joe can enjoy it and not cringe when you see seafood in it. Very well balanced indeed. I highly recommend waiting to sit on the edge of the street because people watching here can be nothing but amazing. We had ringside seats of young guys doing their acrobatics of dance. There are too many options for quality fresh seafood in PDC and this restaurant falls short on all fronts. The guacamole was flat and flavorless. The grilled octopus had been cooked, frozen and reheated for serving which leaves you with an extra chewy protein. I told the waiter we didn't want it immediately after trying it. We also ordered the chef's special fish and it again was something that had been frozen for quite too long before being served - it was dry and over cooked. No sear or grill marks on the fish which led me to belief that it was boiled or microwaved and that's what it tasted like - over cooked, dry/ flavorless texture.I also told the waiter we didn't like it and he just left it on the table The only thing we did like was the shrimp ceviche but you can throw a stone and hit any restaurant that can serve you just as good, if not better ceviche. And for the octopus and fish which we sent back, we were still told we had to pay for it even though both dishes were almost completely untouched. When we tired to address this with the manager, she would not take ownership of the poor quality of food served. I ended up just paying, not tipping (because the waiter would not listen) and walked out as the manager became aggressive and argumentative. Who am I? A Chicago based classically trained French chef for over 20 years. Don't waste your time here. Go to La Vagabunda, Micaela's or just about any other place on 5th before you end up at La Fisheria. A total waste of time, money and unnecessary frustration from the staff. To the owners of this location: you should reassess what your staff is doing . How the staff is running this restaurant, is exactly how you'll end up closing your doors. read more

I went to this place yesterday for lunch...They're open for both lunch and dinner. It was a great experience! All the seafood dishes were fresh and unique in there own way. See pictures. The service was impeccable, they were attentive to our every need. If you like spicy, the table has like 5-6 local hot sauces on it, but the BEST stuff comes from the waiter! I told him I likeed REALLY spicy and he brought me out this little dish of what looked like balsamic vinegar....THIS STUFF WAS BANGING!!!!!! I put it on everything I ate and it REALLY enhanced the flavors plus gave it some kick! Anyways, it was all around a good experience and I'd definitely go back....Oh yeah! They had tasty drinks (not the most creative, but well executed), food was great (grilled octopus looked really good, I ordered a few tostadas to mix things up a bit and each were super tasty) and service was excellent. We visited twice during our stay in Playa del Carmen, the first time it was a definite 5 star experience, we ordered the catch of the day to share, and it was delicious!! It was baked, and it had this high cuisine garlicky flavor, we loved it. As other patrons have stated, really great fish tacos. They serve a chipotle mayonnaise with the chips that you can use for the tacos which is my favorite with Baja style taco pescado. Really good guacamole. An interesting array of sauces for the chips. Glad I stopped by! I'm a big taco pescado fan and I wasn't disappointed. Great store concept too. Not so much a local Mexican feel, but still great. And great service by Xavier! Also pretty decent DJ playing music, the nearby Senior Frogs is pretty loud, but I think the DJ give us some buffer. Came here during a recent trip to PDC and would definitely recommend stopping by for drinks and small bites! Drinks: 4-5 stars. Finally a margarita that has tequila in it! Everywhere I went in Mexico the mixed drinks tasted like candy, so yay for a real drink! It was tart and boozy. Minus one star because I ordered a habanero margarita and I wanted it to be more spicy, but well done my friend. Aguachile de Camaron: 3-4 stars. Very very fresh, but a little too acidic for my liking. I wanted a little more avocado and spice to balance out all the lime. Maybe I just tend to favor a michoacan style of this dish. Chips de Pulpo: 5 stars, a must! I am still dreaming about this dish weeks later. It was so good, no it was perfect! The pulpo was perfectly seasoned and charred. Meh... I thought the food was average and overpriced. Honestly, the typography of the restaurant really drew me in... and it's bright baby blue colors and bright decor. It's definitely a nice, casual environment, but sadly, the food was not really memorable. This was probably my least favorite meal in PDC. I've definitely had better and our server was not attentive. In fact, I felt the bus boy was a lot friendlier than him, when I spilled my drink. We ordered a toastada (I don't even remember much about it), some tacos, and the grilled octopus (which was seriously charred and burnt every where... poor octopus!). See, not very memorable. Was lured in here by one of the waiters and was super we came. The service was great as well as the drinks. They gave us some shrimp soup in a glass jar and it was delicious. I ordered the shrimp ceviche and it was to die for, so much flavor. Every time I've had ceviche the shrimp were chopped up but these were whole shrimp. The price is a bit exaggerated for 5th Ave. it was the largest and most expensive bill for a family of four in my whole vacation of 14 days! Also be aware of a server named "Ruben" he messed up several clients tickets and was kind of suspicious in his attitude. He overcharged people. And told you one price for a drink and then switched it on your bill. Over all it tasted good, but did us harm. I paid over $70 to get diarrhea. Total disappointment. This was out favorite place to eat in Playa del Carmen. The seafood was the best I've ever had ... not just in Playa, but dare I say, anywhere. (I'm from NY so we have many options, but sadly, not a local La Fisheria or I'd be there all the time.) On our 7 day vacation, we ate at La Fisheria 2x. The Aquilles Chavez special, the Tostada del Carmen appetizer, the tuna, the ceviche ... everything we had was mouth-watering delicious. We tried all 4 desert items and each was better than the other. (Natilla de Maracuya might have been the best.) Also, little things, like the hostess and waiters addressing my wife and I by name (thumbs up!) +Seating us near a fan so us New Yorkers could avoid melting in August in Playa heat. Gracias! Chef Aquiles Chávez is amazing! My dad watches his show on TV in Mexico. I was excited to try out his spot in Playa. We really enjoyed this place. We visited with a large group of family and we ordered one of everything! The appetizers were all amazing. I loved the Octopus Chips, Coconut Shrimp, Ceviche, and Tacos de Chicharrón. Everything was good but those were amongst the highlights. For the main dish I ordered the Fish Special. It was fresh and absolutely delish! I nibbled someone's Fish Enchiladas and they were fabulous! The Tortilla with Shrimp was super yummy too and I loved their salsas. Their chips were blah but they are pretty standard for a marisco spot. The service was great and the vibe is super fun and lively.
