Well, I always liked their paletas, it just seems less and less like-able every time Sometimes their flavors are sweet, sometimes they're watered down a bit(milk ones). Recently I've come to notice what seems to be long stored frozen ones, with the crystals with a distinct taste to them. Yeah, well this last visit had me and the kids running to the restroom, yeah. El Paraiso Ice Cream is the GOAT. I first came here about 10 years ago and recently came again to enjoy their freshly made fruit pops. As I remember, everything is made on-site and sold individually or in bulk. There is no discount for buying multiples, but you can choose which flavors you want. On this last visit, each pop was $0.65, and it was less than $1.50 for two--perfect for a quick snack, dessert, or cheap date. I chose the watermelon pop, and P2 got the pineapple pop. Both were equally delicious as these pops are made from fresh fruit. Unfortunately, there is some added food coloring. I've heard from native San Antonians that they used to sell El Paraiso Ice Cream for school fundraisers. I make El Paraiso a must whenever I visit San Antonio. I stopped by El Paraiso with my grandfather for a sweet treat after lunch last weekend. They sell one thing - paletas (traditional Mexican popsicles that can be dairy-free and fruit based or creamy) in about 24 flavors: coconut, horchata, pineapple, pickle, mango con chile, Lucas... El Paraiso has been in this retro building on Fredericksburg Road since 1984, and I'm pretty sure that very little has changed since then. You walk in, grab a basket, open the doors of the freezers, and grab as many paletas as you want. They're 69 cents per paleta, making it a pretty affordable treat. Are they the best paletas I've ever had? No. Some were a little bit too icy/watery and the vanilla raisin was made so that all the raisins were at the very top and then that section of the paleta broke off. And the customer service might leave a little bit to be desired. But the place has retro charm in spades and it's a great classic spot. read more

I love coming here for three reasons 1. delicious almost all the flavors are really really good, my favorites are pina colada, horchata, strawberry and cream, and vanilla raisin personally. 2. It's cheap - i am not gonna tell you how cheap you will have to make the trip but believe me you will be shocked at the affordable prices and the more you buy the better the deal. (Tip: they sell dry ice to keep them icy, so no reason not to stock up.) 3.) Fresh, fresh, fresh ingredients not some weird chemical you never heard of and can't even pronounce, this place has been in business for many years doing what they do best taking fresh ingredients and making delicious paletas and selling them for prices that anyone could indulge now and again. Apparently they are recession proof and inflation proof, thank goodness!! Only downside and really it's not a big deal to me personally but there are no seats to eat your paletas except for outdoor seating a few tables outside in the front, but if your like me that's not even a big enough deal to mention I almost forgot that other ice cream parlors have indoor seating in them!! It's a little bit hard to see when coming down Fredericksburg Rd. It's a little ways down the block after the HEB on the same side of the street. read more

A friend brought a bag full of paletas from here for our group and they were all so amazing! My favorites I tried were the "ice cream" bars as opposed to the fresh fruit ones, but I like the creamier flavor. Coconut, cheesecake, and strawberry were my favorites and were all SO good. Rented a paleta cart here for a drive by party! It was a pretty good deal. You have to order a minimum of 150 paletas and you get the free cart rental for 24hrs. With dry ice, 150 paletas, and a cart it only cost me $83! A pretty good deal. It was a long line waiting to pick it up probably because it's summer and everyone wants a paleta. Drive through ice cream? Sure? The line is long but worth it. It's also super cheap, so you don't feel bad indulging in a treat. I saw people buying boxes of paletas and I don't blame them. Stock up if you like ice cream. They have a ton of flavors, but I really liked the strawberry. It's fresh, creamy with visible chunks of strawberry and the perfect refreshment for a hot day. I've never been a big fan of ice pops*, but the alchemical concoctions from El Paraiso have won me over to the point of addiction. When referring to these ice pops or anything else I enjoy (raw oysters, video games, European art-trash horror movies made by weirdos with names ending in vowels), I say to hell with the tyrannical idiom "everything in moderation." Moderation is for passionless dullards, the middle-of-the-road mindset. To paraphrase Nada, the antihero from John Carpenter's "They Live," the middle of the road is the worse place to drive. I believe in enjoying life to its fullest and stuffing myself silly with delicious, refreshing ice pops from El Paraiso. Unlike pops of the mass produced variety, the handcrafted delights at El Paraiso contain only a handful of ingredients, such as real fruit and real sugar. The only artificial element is a few drops of food coloring, a necessary evil to make the pops resemble the fruits to which they refer. The use of real fruit (not just juice but pulp) gives these treats a bold flavor I've seldom experienced from ice pops. The lemon flavor tastes of freshly grated zest, the pineapple reminds me of freshly cut pineapple, and so on. I've yet to try a flavor I did not enjoy. The next time you're near the Deco District on Fredericksburg, keep an eye out for the distinctive blue-and-white building next to HEB and Little Caesar's. El Paraiso has been in business since 1984, so they must be doing something right. Buy the freezies by the truckload and scarf them down by the dozen! Should you overindulge to the point of freezing your tonsils, you can inspect the damage by repurposing the stick as a tongue depressor. *Popsicle is a trademarked brand name that has become a proprietary eponym, hence my use of the term "ice pop" to refer to water-based food snacks such as paletas. I would use "paleta" more freely, but gringos look foolish when attempting to pronounce Spanish words. read more

A large order was placed in advance with delivery instructions for seven of our properties for tenant appreciation day between the hours of 10am-12pm. It was already close to delivery end time and the paletas were a no show at any of our properties. Our VP called several times to obtain an ETA but was finally met with an extremely nonchalant person who had no recollection of the delivery or route details. Instead of offering a solution, they maintained a dismissive attitude and complete disregard for the time crunch we were now facing. The delivery man showed up to the third location fifteen minutes after 12 and one of our coworkers had to go to El Paraiso to pick up the last cart that was supposed to have been delivered to avoid delays. We are extremely disappointed given that we utilized this company last year and had a very successful event for all of our seven properties. read more

We got 6 but I've only had the orchata, pickle, and tamarind so far. The orchata taste exactly like Cinnamon Toast Crunch milk. The tamarind was tart and delicious. The pickle...taste just like dill pickle water...in fact the first ingredient is dill pickle water lol. I wouldn't recommend the pickle unless you love pickles. After an issue with Siri's directions, found the place and placed order. Being a first timer there would have preferred an easier understanding of which paletas were listed. As it turned out the creamy selections are the first group then the fruit ones. There was a labeling issue on a few of the flavors but the worker did tell me which were which. I have been a supporter for years and today I was caught by surprise by the horrible customer service. I went to purchase paletas for a birthday party because I wanted to continue to support this small business. The staff took 10 minutes to even acknowledge me, complained that their customers were "making a mess" and were almost bothered that we were needing help. I was spending an early Sunday afternoon watching NBA playoff basketball as the Milwaukee Bucks and my beloved Boston Celtics were deadlocked in a Game 1 battle when a friend of mine rather off-handedly asked me whether I wanted a popsicle. After my brusque reaction, my friend insisted that I should reconsider and since the game was on commercial break, I decided why the heck not? The Celtics won the game, but my mind was pretty evenly split between that and the blissful experience of the coconut popsicle from El Paraiso. Since that day just three weeks ago, I've probably eaten roughly two dozen popsicles from El Paraiso. That might not sound like an inordinate amount except 1) there was a ten day meditation in between where I wasn't in the vicinity of this place, 2) the meditation focused on stopping your cravings, 3) I've eaten multiple popsicles for what appears to be dinner on more than one occasion and 4) I generally don't even like popsicles. Add it all up and this place is just truly special. As you can see from pretty much every Yelp review, there are actual coconut shavings in the coconut flavor popsicle. It's fantastic. So is the mango flavor and the pecan grew on me. Really, I have liked every flavor I have tried so far save for the cantaloupe. On deck are the highly regarded banana and cheesecake flavors. It's not surprising this place has high Yelp reviews: 1) they have a lot of flavors, 2) it is super cheap, and 3) it's generous given the quality of the product. I like it because the flavors are unique, there are low calorie and low sugar options, and the flavors are what they say they are. Whatever your reason, if you haven't allowed yourself to indulge in this San Antonio treat, there is still time to increase your pleasure in the spring and summer. I absolutely love El Paraiso. I've been eating their paletas ever since I was a kid when my mom would take me or buy them from their paleteros. It really doesn't get any better. They are super cheap and they are excellent quality delicious and authentic paletas. They have a ton of flavors! I have several favorites but my top two are horchata and vanilla without the raisins. If you buy them in bulk they are cheaper and they sell dry ice so that they won't melt on you on the way home. It's awesome because this way you can try them all and figure out which are your favorite. The place also is really cool on the outside and it's easy to spot; you can't miss it.
