As much as I hate giving bad reviews, this is goiNg to be one of them. I'm perplexed by the number of positive reviews. We went in on a slow day, some people came in after us and service was ridiculously slow. My husband wanted gelato and my mom and I wanted coffee. I ordered a cappuccino after waiting a minute for the baristas attention. He didn't take my moms order even though she was standing next to me. I waited and waited. My husband went to the bathroom, ordered his gelato and I was still waiting. I finally got my coffee and then my mom ordered. I paid and got a table while my mom waited. And waited. She watched the barista clean the machine and then walk away. Then started the coffee and walked away to clean another counter until a coworker reminded him he was making a coffee. It was just bizarre. The coffee was fine, no complaints. The gelato was tasty, but it was ice cream, not gelato. The Nutella Gelato tasted like chocolate ice cream. Again, it was good, but not gelato. We were also confused as to what the place was trying to be. It's a long narrow space. When you walk in the gelato bar is to the right followed by the espresso bar. This reminded us a lot of bars in Italy where you order and stand at the bar to finish your coffee. That ends the Italian experience. The wall to the left is full of liquor bottles made to look like your stereotypical Russian vodka and such. But it was all orange wine. Then there were rows of Christmas ornaments. Seating was in the back. It was nice to have a booth to sit in but it didn't feel welcoming at all. My boyfriend and I went to this place because I was really in the mood for some Gelato. I ordered the strawberry gelato which tasted more like a sorbet. It was really good none the less and the hazelnut Nutella flavor and it taste extremely creamy which I enjoyed very much. My boyfriend did not like his because to him they both tasted like water but I think he was more against the texture than anything. We did go around closing time which we did not know until the girl turned a group away. It is right across the street from the Alamo and a bunch of little shops. The Gelato spiked with alcohol reminded me of the Italian ice Creme we buy in Europe. It tasted very flavorful and creamy. Our god child has pistachio and it was delicious as well. It has been a long while since we have been to Francesco's. We came in looking for an atm machine and the ladies were very nice and pointed us to the corner where they had an information booth. As far as places to eat right by the Alamo I feel like the area is lacking a bit until you get a few blocks away or closer to the Riverwalk. I was looking for a bite to eat after my tour of the Alamo and noticed that everything close was entertainment type stuff. It's a small place with a variety of stuff inside. If you want a coffee, tea, pizza or gelato then this is your place! They also have souvenirs galore! I had a slice of pizza, which was decent. It was pepperoni and thin crust, nothing fancy. I also had some gelato. You get 2 scoops and I got mine in a cone. It was hard deciding what flavors to go with because there were a bunch that looked tasty. I did a scoop of lemon and mexican vanilla. It was delicious! The lemon was probably my favorite and I would get it again! They have seating at the front of the store and towards the back as well - fyi. I walked in and kind of hung out until I was greeted. Gelato tasted decent. I ordered pistachio one scoop in a cone, because that's my default flavor. I asked for a sample of cheesecake, and the lady with the weathered face measily scraped the gelato with the sample spoon, and I could not even tasted enough to decide if I wanted it or not. I was the first person in the store, but when it came time for me to pay a long line formed in front of me. Not only was this very inconvenient, it didn't make any sense to me. I could have paid the girl who scooped me my ice cream, but I was told to go to another person to be rung up. That's how I became the last person to be helped, instead of the first person to finish, even though I was the first person in the store and the first person to decide what I wanted. To be blunt, I did not enjoy my gelato at Francesco's. We stopped at Francesco's on a Monday evening around 7:30. There was no one in the place, so we were served right away. I had a sample of strawberry which was pretty good. Lots of strawberry flavor, and it tasted real, not like chemicals or anything. Not earth-shattering, but good. I should have gone with strawberry but I could not resist my favorite flavor: sea salt caramel. I tasted no salt and only a hint of caramel. It was creamy enough but the flavor simply was not there. They only have one size available, and I recall it was about $5. Over half of it went into the trash, definitely not worth the calories for such little taste. So, not a huge loss given the price. But, definitely disappointing and while I would maybe go back for the strawberry, I definitely would not try the sea salt caramel again. read more

I came here late at night craving some gelato while visiting the city. The streets seemed a bit sketchy but I'm not local so I can't say if its the reality or not. When you walk in this place the smell hits you HARD. I'm not entirely sure if it was from the colorful variety of fruit based choices the greet you at the entrance or if they were just cleaning off the counters with something but either way it smelled great. A nice gelato store right across the alley from the Alamo! They offer a good variety of gelatos, from coffee to peanut butter and everything in between. This place used to be a steak house back in the day, and they haven't changed it too much from the original layout. There's an old timey pressed tin ceiling, and retro ice cream parlor chairs. My favorite thing about this place is that they blast the A/C. This can certainly be appreciated during San Antonio's hot, hot summers! They have little fans around that blast the cold air. I really appreciate them trying to keep you cool as soon as you walk in the door. They sell a lot of coffee stuff, but I didn't see any kind of espresso machines or anything. If you're looking for San Antonio coffee memorabilia, this is your spot. They have a large selection of snappy t-shirts and signs that proclaim a love of coffee and caffeine. They also sell Alamo themed toys. Need a cork gun or an indian headdress? They got you covered. The service was rushed, but they did manage to get everyone served in a fast manner.
