Visiting my daughter in Mesa and wanted to get some El Pollo Loco as used to love it when we lived in California 20 years ago. Guess things have changed. A 2 piece chicken meal used to have about 4-5 ounces of meat that was moist and flavorful. Now you get maybe 2 oz of dry meat. Beans and rice have no flavor. I remember when I was living in Los Angeles a lifetime ago and El Pollo Loco was born. We loved the marinated and grilled chicken and because there was one close to where we were living...their chicken became a regular staple! We were there shortly after this store opened and made another visit in a spur of the moment decision for a quick dinner. We ordered the following: Chipotle Chicken Avocado Burrito: great flavor with a mild spicy kick to it. Everything was fresh in the burrito and just an good tasting one. Tortilla soup: full of chunky veggies like carrots and corn and onion with big chunks of chicken, green chilies, and a decent amount of cilantro. The overall taste was extremely bland and I think they thicken it with some sort of thickening agent because it was really a bit too thick...not really soup like. Loco side salad: fresh leafy greens with lots of tortilla strips and their creamy cilantro dressing had lots of great flavor. This is a great salad! Three piece chicken meal: chicken is worthy of five stars for sure. The grill is perfect and the flavor is so rich and tasty. The rice was flavorless and I think it was a bit too underdone. I skipped the beans with the meal. We also ordered some chips with guacamole, which was great. Chips had lots of crisp and the guac was really good with chunks of avocado and chilies. I swear I'm the only person I know that hasn't had El Pollo Loco. I get the craziest stares from my friends when I admit this so I usually keep it to myself. Well enough is enough. I had to give it a try! What's so good about this fire-roasted chicken that makes people either love it or hate it?! I ordered a family dinner with ten-pieces of chicken with some corn and mashed potato on the side. I didn't know it was normal for them to serve you up a side of tortillas with your meal and I wasn't quite sure how to attack it. I ended up eating it like a chicken taco and it was good. I dig! Mine had two round pieces of bones, size of a pink nail.. in his burrito he found a piece of a chopping board, that's what it feels like to me and then also a chicken bone the size of grape. We scored two free meals through the FB soft opening special. Each meal was valued at $10 or less. There were several people in line inside and in the drive thru at this beautiful, new location. The line moved smoothly and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I had the voucher on my phone and after we ordered two 4 piece meals and sides, we showed them the voucher and they didnt scan it, just said ok and let us through. The employees and management were clearly on point in trying to make this grand opening a hospitable, quick, easy and YUMMY experience for all. We helped ourselves to the salsa bar while the juicy and flavorful chickens grilled away. The horchata machine was working as hard as the employees. Our order was ready within a few minutes and we took our tasty bounty to go and enjoy at home. The chicken was scrumptious with crispy skins and tender meat. The sides of mashed potatoes were billowey, running out way too soon. The broccoli was alright but could have used more seasoning and another 2 minutes in the steamer. Today I received a coupon on the app for my birthday and used it to order a tostada salad without pico and 5 minutes later I picked it up. I always eat at El Pollo Loco but this is the first time at this location on Chandler Blvd. I like the portion sizes of the chicken they serve here and the picture I uploaded shows it isn't skimpy. This is my typical fare with the 3pc meal and a side of 3 tacos al carbon. I was not disappointed at all. Filled me right up and likely to keep me that way all day. Reyna was very attentive and quick with our order, welcomed us in and kept her dining room clean when orders were not being made. She is a hard worker and keeps a clean dining room. Yesterday evening was my first time visiting this location and it may have possibly been my last. Employees were not so friendly and by the looks of it, most of them did not want to be there. The dining area wasn't too busy but there were a few tables occupied. Space is limited and we found ourselves sitting right behind another group and we were literally back to back. We exchanged a few "oopsies I'm sorry" and a few "excuse me's" when we were trying to get up. The cashier had no line and so she helped us right away. We ordered a family meal of 14 pieces of chicken, and two drinks for about $32. We were given a buzzer and we went to sit down. The salsa bar was clean and it was stocked. On the night I decided I wanted tea they had no more. When I told the worker about it, he said they were not gonna make more for the night.. bummer. The trash bins were overflowing with trash and from where we were sitting we could see the floor underneath the trash bins... omg it was bad. It looked like it had never been swept. I went to use the bathroom and that was a mistake. There was dirty toilet paper all over the floors.. no one had checked up on this bathroom.. Our food took a while but we eventually received it. The beans had no flavor and our gravy wasn't hot. We were given like 20 tortillas though... no joke. I went back to ask for a bag and some lids. The guy that I asked told me he would help me, but that he was only supposed to be working the back and not the front? I didn't know what to make of that.. all I wanted was a bag and some lids.. lol. The green salsa was delicious here though, and it's not watery like the baseline location makes it... First time at an El Pollo Loco and this location was just recently built from the ground-up. Got a Double Chicken Burrito Bowl and it was good and filling. Chicken was cooked perfectly and moist although there was a little heat that built up as I ate. The burrito bowl was very filling as well. They even have horchata at the fountain drinks! So my wife and came here this evening, first time as they are new to the area. We have been waiting to go and were super excited to visit. The first thing we noticed when we were in line was customers complaining that they didn't have lids for the salsa bar. One of the employee kept informing people that they were indeed out of lids. So finally we got our chance to order, my wife went first and ordered a Chicken Avocado Wrap. When the cashier informed us both that it would be 15-20 minutes before the chicken would be ready. So I asked what chicken we could order and he said that they didn't have any currently available. Wow, just wow. Such a huge disappointment. I don't expect a chicken restaurant to run out of chicken. LOOK OUT!!!!!! El Pollo Loco ... the crazy chicken has just landed in Chandler!! I came across a Facebook event for the preview opening and was able to score two drive thru tickets for the restaurant today! Each ticket was valued up to $10 so my husband and I had a total of $20.00 to spend on individual meals only. Let me just say the building looks very nice, clean design and an easy drive thru menu to order from. The staff was very attentive, super helpful and kind. The girl who took our order was very good. She spoke loud and clear, repeating our meals and informing us of our vouchers. I had the 3 piece chicken meal and my husband had the 2 since he wasn't too hungry. My meal came with two additional sides which I gladly choose mash potatoes, Mac and cheese while hubby had Mac n cheese and corn. We got the try the Chile lime and avocado dressing! We choose the legs and thigh pieces! Let me just say....... yummy yummy in my tummy!! The chicken was grilled perfectly!!! The chicken was so tender and moist!! ( reminds me of the perfect rotisserie chicken ) Perfectly seasoned! And when dipped in the sauces omg my mouth was sooo happy!! The Chile and avocado sauces are probably my new favorite! They did a really good job with the mash potatoes and Mac n cheese!!! This will probably be our new spot when we are craving grilled chicken!! Watch out KFC!!! Overall hubby and I were really impressed with the preview opening and this was all done through the drive-thru. No stress, food was cooked perfectly and very very tasty.
