I've visited El Pollo Loco quite a few times. The reason? Back when I was living in Houston, I won free chicken for a year at a festival. I kid you not. That meant I was going to El Pollo Loco monthly for a two piece chicken and two sides. Since I moved to Phoenix, this was my first time visiting their North Scottsdale location. I stopped by on a Sunday for an early dinner. Ambiance (2.5/5): This is fast food we're talking about so they all pretty much look the same. Mostly booth seating inside, a drive through if you're ordering to go, and a bathroom. I'm taking things down a notch because most of the tables were dirty. I had to pass up on three tables until I chose the fourth to sit at. The staff should be a little more on top of things making sure tables are wiped down after a customer leaves. Service (3/5): Nobody was working the front counter when I arrived. It took three or four minutes for someone to appear. A bit bizarre for a fast food establishment when at least one person should be manning the register at all times. When I placed my order, the cashier was gracious enough to allow me to substitute guac for queso. I appreciated that. Drinks (3.5/5): The typical soft drinks you would expect with a twist. They also have horchata and two different flavors of agua fresca. The agua frescas are made by Minute Maid so don't expect the same quality you would find at a traditional Mexican restaurant, but still better than the standard offerings. Food (3/5): After a year of two piece chickens, I decided to switch things up and get their creamy chipotle chicken quesadilla combo meal which is served with chips and guac. Overall, I was displeased. The quesadilla has small chunks of chicken in it. And not much chicken. It was a weak quesadilla. The portion size of the chips is a lot smaller than what you get at most Mexican spots, too. I'd recommend going for the chicken meals instead. You'll get more bang for your buck there. Pro Tip: Download their app. Scan it when you pay and you'll accumulate points that you can redeem for discounts and freebies. They will send you periodic offers, too. read more

This Store never fails. You would never expect to get the VIP treatment in a fast food chain. Lately, fast food stores are typically and always working on DoorDash orders rather than taking care of the customers in the dining area. Rigoberto and Sophia are absolutely amazing and give the utmost and outstanding Customer Service. What would we do without them. They are the epitome of what Customer Service should be especially in Arizona. We love the Food and always look forward to seeing them. I LOVE El Pollo Loco, but this location has some bad staff lately (writing this 8/11/26@ 1130am). I ordered online to use my loyalty points, selected Drive Thru for pick up location, but when I get to the drive thru, the staff said "can you come inside or come back later? We barely got your order". I'm disabled so I'm in the drive thru for a reason, and it made no sense : people order from the drive thru and aren't told to come back later or come inside. My husband elected to go inside and the staff member was clearly flustered about filling an online order vs a drive thru order, for whatever reason. She told him "all online orders always have to be served inside". My husband told her there's a drive thru option online (clearly she's making up her own rules). She didn't apologize or seem concerned whatsoever about this random inconvenience she clearly created on her own. I don't know if it was because I was mad but the food didn't taste great this time either. The chicken wasn't salted, the soda tasted like the syrup to carbonated water ratio was off, and the churro was greasy. Won't be coming back to this location. read more

This was my second disappointing experience at this location. I downloaded the El Pollo Loco app because it offered a reward for a free Double Chicken Salad with any purchase. While ordering, I misunderstood the menu and selected the wrong item. After looking at the menu again later, I realized that misunderstanding was completely my mistake. Because of that, I decided simply modify my order.. I was then told that my app reward could no longer be used, and it disappeared from my account even though I never purchased anything. Whether that was a system limitation or store policy, it was incredibly frustrating because I had downloaded the app specifically for that reward. What disappointed me most was the customer service. I'm not sure if he was the manager, but the gentleman that was assisting me wasn't rude, But he seemed visibly frustrated, and it made me feel uncomfortable asking questions. I've worked in customer service, and I know firsthand that situations like this happen. Even when there's nothing an employee can do because of the system, customers should still feel like they're being treated with patience, respect, and understanding. This is also the same location where I previously received the wrong order, so unfortunately this experience didn't give me much confidence to come back. I hope the restaurant can improve both the customer experience and, if possible, the way app rewards are handled when a transaction is canceled before a purchase is completed. I feel that good Customer service and finding solutions is rare and hard to find these days. My disappointment wasn't about the salad. It was more about the customer service behind it and the lack of willing to find a solution for a customer. After that entire interaction, I just decided not to get anything and I left. read more

They always forget things. Like no salsa for all the food. Reliably inconsistent across the board. Get your act together over there please. How hard is it to read the fricken ticket and ensure all items CUSTOMERS PAID FOR are in the bag before you hand it over to delivery person or in drive thru? For the last 6 months whenever I come here there is no one in the drive thru before or after I leave. It's so not busy compared to other fast food places nearby it's unusual. I can't help but think it might have something to do with the service. I asked for a two piece meal and a coke. I get to the drive thru they hand me my food and say bye. I ask for the drink and they said you didn't order the combo and shut the window. I wait for a minute because I would like to order the drink separate if that is the case but they just keep laughing and talking inside and no one comes back. Time for a update!! A close friend of mine from the Modesto California area really recommended their tamale bowl!! So I had to try it. I just went through the drive thru and I asked if the tamale bowl was spicy. And they recommended I get it without the sauce on it. And I got the tamale bowl with 2 tamales no sauce and it was so yummy. The combination of pinto beans, rice and tamales in one bite was delicious. I also got a bowl of green chili posole. I love the crazy chicken aka El Pollo Loco! The simplicity of the food preperation is what makes this place so special! The chicken is very lightly seasoned and is sprayed with pineapple juice (roomer has it) and that's what makes the skin so irresistibly crunchy and good! One of my favorite treats is taking all the skin with some meat and rice and wrap it in the warm tortillas provided and dip it into the all you can eat salsas! The side of steamed broccoli is just that, steamed and totally neutral so it will mix with whatever your favorite dish is. Now that covid 19 is a thing the open salsa bar may become a relic of the past but I'm sure they'll still find a way to accommodate us, perhaps packaging side salsas etc. like to go orders. This restaurant was the last dine in experience I had before the lockdown and the first restaurant I got takeout from when going back out to eat again. It contains huge chunks of chicken that you need to shred before eating and then a queso sauce that was applied very sparingly. The sour cream, guac and salsa rounded out the experience. I have been to this el pollo loco location about 2 or 3 times already. In all the times I went here for lunch with my colleague, the food was fresh and the service was great. I recently went there and got a free meal worth $7 with an order of a meal for signing up on their app. For 2 3 piece meals to be worth only about $11, that's an excellent deal! Now that I have claimed this reward, I received another for a family meal! This is great! The first time we visited this location, I believe it probably was the manager who came to our table and offered us a churro for free. It was actually very good! I was surprised that they had such bad reviews and he shared that those reviews were in about their first week of opening and he promised that the service would improve. I honestly have not had any issues with service in the 3 times I've been there. You will notice that this branch looks a lot nicer than other branches of el pollo loco. We ordered a 16-piece chicken dinner with 3 sides and 3 regular chicken quesadillas. The chicken it seemed had not been pre-marinated and did not have much taste at all. But the worst was the quesadillas. They were two tortillas together with almost nothing in the middle but a little cheese. My wife & son refused to eat them so we took pictures and put them in the garbage. This was one of my best chicken restaurants in Scottsdale, but this is not the case anymore.
