The mission in old town is a must visit location if you're ever coming to visit AZ it has been a staple of mine for many years and continues to be my favorite restaurant in old town! The food is always delicious and the side table guac is a must try. The servers are very friendly. It's a very well operated restaurant although it can get very crowded very quickly so I recommend making reservations ahead of time. This is a great brunch or dinner spot. We've been here a few times and usually have very much enjoyed it. This last time was definitely a different experience. The restaurant seemed incredibly short staffed had only a handful of things on the menu, and the food tasted burnt. It has a really cool ambience, but as we all know, we go to a restaurant for good food and a good experience. Our current recommendation for this place is that it is a hit or miss. The Mission is a lovely place to have lunch or dinner. We have eaten on the back patio and inside. Although inside the lighting is so dark that even my 2 1/2 yo granddaughter wasn't happy until her eyes adjusted. I thought it was just my old eyes but no. I love love their guacamole made at table side for you. That is must have. Their salsa is also very good. I just had the kale salad again after a hiatus and I must say it is as delicious as I remember it! I added the two large shrimp. We went to this hip restaurant in Old Town last night. The playlist was amazing with songs from 1982 through at least 2018. Our server Christian was extremely attentive and polite and did a great job. One of the walls inside is made up of Himalayan sea salt bricks which radiates light from the kitchen and is pretty amazing. I want one. We ordered the table side guacamole which was great and a generous portion. For entrees, skirt steak tacos with white bean purée, and mahi tacos with mission fries. All very good. This was such a great find for a nice dinner with upscale casual vibes and delicious food. They have ample space both indoors and on their patio. Our server was very friendly and kept checking in on us. Since I was do in with a vegetarian friend, we opted to get a lot of vegetarian dishes to share. When I tell you, this was the best guacamole we have ever had believe me. A chef rolled out a cart with all their ingredients and asked us what spice level we prefer. We went with the mild option and he made our guacamole fresh with all the ingredients tableside the guacamole had a strong taste of lime, which tasted really good. Then we got some Gorditas, which had an interesting creamy flavour. It had your traditional corn gordita, but it also had a drizzle of balsamic which was an interesting mix. Tasted delicious regardless. We also got a couple taco types to share both vegetarian. One was a butternut squash, and the other was brussels sprouts. No I'm not a huge fan of vegetarian tacos, but I will say these were done really well. When we were replacing our order, our server told us that we have ordered really well. And boy was he right because we had lots of leftovers but no regrets because we wanted to taste everything and everything taste delicious. We ended the night with coffee and a pumpkin bread pudding. This was not our favorite. It was on the sweet side, but the coffee combination with the sweet bread pudding tasted OK. Will likely go for the churros next time. I ordered the tabelside guacamole (mild because I can't do spicy), the Tecate Skirt Steak tacos and a side of the Oaxacan Cheesy Rice. Every single item had me drooling for more!! The guacamole was unique in that it is made tableside and includes hass avocado, jalapeño, red onion, fresh serrano, garlic, sea salt, lime, tomatoes, chipotle puree, cilantro, cotija, & toasted pepitas. I was obsessed with this guacamole and wish I could have taken it home with me. The tacos were to die for honestly. The steak was so freshly cooked, soft, and tender. We decided to get the table side guacamole and it really lived up to the hype. So fresh and delicious. I will try to replicate at home but there were so many ingredients. It's worth having them just make it! I was disappointed in the grilled street corn. There wasn't much flavor or grill marks. I wondered if it was frozen. The pork shoulder tacos were a little sweet for my taste but it was a healthy portion for my friend and I to share. We asked for flour tortilla and they only brought 2 vs the 3 corn tortilla. I stopped by The Mission Old Town for brunch on my birthday (on a Sunday). While they don't have a parking, it's located in the heart of Old Town so parking is free on the street and in most surface lots. I found a spot in the surface lot right across the street from one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in town. Ambiance (4/5): The Mission is a nice restaurant. There's a small patio in front and a large patio out back. Sit at the outdoor patio if you can pull it off. Inside is great too, and there's nice artwork both inside and outside. The only issue? It's a popular restaurant and they try to pack in as many people as possible so space is at a premium. That also means that if you come at a peak hour, like we did, it's going to be pretty loud. Service (4/5): There was a wait when we arrived and the bar was full (first come, first served). Luckily, a group was leaving right when I lingered by the bar and we were able to snag the seats. The bartender did a pretty good job taking care of us. There was room for improvement as far as her efficiency and checking in, but overall, given how busy the restaurant was, pretty good. Drinks (4.5/5): The Mission has an interesting cocktail list. As you'd expect, it's tequila-focused but there's a good variety. You'll find creative cocktails which is always big in my book. Plus margaritas like prickly pear margaritas. I went with the correndo na chuva which has cachaca, passion fruit, lemongrass, sherry, and lime juice. Cachaca is a Brazilian liqueur which you don't see in many places so this was a treat. It was a refreshing cocktail. Lots of spicy cocktails are available, too. Food (4/5): While the brunch menu is pretty extensive, I think there's a clear winner: the all-you can eat whole roasted pig out. For $19, and only on Saturdays and Sundays during brunch, it's a steal of a deal. You get pineapple roasted shoulder and pork belly carnitas tacos served with your choice of one of five sauces. There's a little buffet stand where a member of their staff will make the tacos for you. I had about 10 of them and they hit the spot! Nice variety of sauces so I tried all of them except for one (two spicy for my blood) and you can request flour tortillas if you prefer that over the corn tortillas they have. Between the two proteins, I thought the pork shoulder was more flavorful and tender. It's no surprise that The Mission Old Town has some of the most Yelp reviews in town. It's a popular restaurant. Came here for an early Valentine's Day dinner and this place was packed. We came here right when they open and thankfully had a reservation. Service by our waiter was awesome. Food was mostly delicious. The chips and salsa that comes complimentary was good. Table side guacamole was a fun experience. Next up was the Crispy Pork and Cola Lime Glaze; I'd skip this next time. Very chewy and nothing much to it. Chorizo Porchetta was good as well. The taste can get a little bit overwhelming with the white bean purée and the sweet garlic crema. Just wash it down with a fizzy drink. The best thing here is definitely the Prime Flat Iron Steak. Cook was perfect, taste was amazing. Marinaded in chimichurri and served with Pandebono (cheesy bread balls) which was a great addition. Last but definitely not least was the Espresso Churros. The churro it self was light and airy, perfectly seasoned and crisp. The ice cream from Sweet Republic was melted by the time it got to us. But that wasn't a bad thing at all. The churros dipped in the melted ice cream (which seemed like a milkshake) was a great combo. The only downside I can see of this restaurant is how crowded it gets. Tables are so close together, our table was bumped a few times when bigger individual neighbor trying to get in and out of the seat. If you get claustrophobic, this might not be the place for you; dark and cramped. Or just deal with it because the food is worth a try. read more

We visited The Mission on a Monday evening. It was very busy and reservations were full. They have 3 seating areas, the small patio in the front, the main dining room inside, and a back room. The patio looked comfy and intimate. The inside was dimly lit with very cool decor. Tables are slightly close together, but it wasn't so that it was distracting or unpleasant while we were dining. The service was really great. Friendly and fast. Our waters were constantly full and the wait and running staff offered suggestions but not in a way we felt we had to order something. They also did a great job of explaining dishes as they brought them out. The drinks and the food were outstanding. We ordered four different starters and two taco plates. The surprise of the night was the Duck Carnitas Empanadas. But truly every dish was better than the next when it came to the starters. The tacos were good but nothing outstanding about them. We got medium spice and I liked the cotija cheese and pumpkin seed garnish. I liked it was table side, but because of the table arrangement, it was hard for everyone to see him make it. We had two of the taco entrees (butternut squash and battered mahi mahi), the chorizo porchetta, and the salmon. The mahi was well-cooked with flavorful batter and slaw. The tortillas were my favorite part! They didn't crack and held well. The chorizo porchetta was filling and very meaty. It did have quite a bit of fat, but that's the nature of the cut of meat. The salmon was cooked perfectly with a creamy sauce that brought the entire dish to the next level. We ended the evening with their pumpkin bread pudding and WOW! Even if you don't have dessert, GET THIS. It was served warm with a generous scoop of ice cream and topped with pomegranate and pumpkin seeds. They also brought frozen margarita samples on the house! We had come here years ago and decided to try it out again. We had tried the Kierland location and did not enjoy it much. Well, we realized why we had not come back to this one for so long. We had a reservation but got there an hour early. They were able to seat us in 15 minutes but put us at the shared table near the bar, while there were so many other tables empty. I ordered a margarita but it was watered down and had too much alcohol. I find it hard to believe that bars can go wrong with a margarita. I had to send it back. The second drink I got (a cucumber drink) was not much better. The food overall was not good. I love Mexican food and I really wanted to like it, but it was disappointing. We ordered a lot of food. Tostadas- the chicken thigh was just not good. The meat was dry and overcooked. It tasted a bit like pork, so we thought maybe it was a combination of chicken and pork. That's not what it says on the menu. Street corn- this was probably the only thing we enjoyed. Good flavor. Peruvian stew- not impressed. The clam was a bit chewy. Tacos- the chicken taco was salty and the skirt steak was overcooked. We also tried some special tacos on charcoal tortillas. They were pricey and ended up being pretty small and did not taste like anything special. Mission fries- they were like regular fries! There was no seasoning and it tasted like plain ketchup. The service was good. Our server was quite attentive. Maybe it was a bad day for the chef, but I still can't imagine the food being any better. They make the guac "table side", but because the tables are packed in like sardines they had to make it 5 tables away from us... It was also so dark in there! Most of the customers had to use their phone's flashlight to even read the menu. Overall, the atmosphere was honestly terrible and I would never come back, which is such a shame because the food was absolutely wonderful! Recommend the duck empanada and the skirt steak tacos. We arrived at 5:50 for a 6:00 reservation, checked in, and waited. I went back to the station to remind them we were there and got seated at 6:10. That was the only thing that was even close to wrong. I started with a Mission margarita and we ordered the guac, prepared tableside. The guac, the chips and the margarita were great, as was the medium hot salsa that was there with it. The guac preparer had about a dozen ingredients and let us pick and choose. My wife ordered the Roasted Organic Butternut Squash tacos and I had the Chorizo Porchetta: a pork shoulder with house made chorizo, with rosemary, cotija, white bean puree, sweet garlic crema. The pork was a wonderfully slow-cooked, fall-apart delight with a nice bark and glaze. The squash tacos had black bean sofrito, cumin, lime, pepitas, pickled jalapeño, and cotija. We both loved the food, bringing a bunch home. They also had a nice, not too long wine menu, with quite a few "Latin" wines, like the nice Tempranillo that I enjoyed. We didn't want to stop eating! Our waitress Jordan was so kind, knowledgeable, and accommodating! Everything she suggested we ended up eating! We started with the table side walk, and wow that was so fun seeing them created in front of you with warm chips and a mild salsa on the side, we had to make sure not to eat too many chips since we ordered more than we thought we did... The chicken thighs in the corn tortillas were so flavorful and perfectly paired with the guacamole I could've just ate that for dinner My boyfriend and I split the pork shoulder and the marinated chicken and got a side of the chipotle grits which paired so perfectly with both at the end of the meal we still had a lot to take home and Jordyn was kind enough to refill our chips, salsa, guacamole, and added more of the chipotle grits oh my God, this girl, and that was the way to my heart We sat in the back patio under a a heater, but walking through the main restaurant you got a sense of Christmas in the Southwest. Celebrated our anniversary at the mission old town! Loved our dining experience and we had a wonderful waiter, Aaron who was so passionate about the food and provided such a detailed explanation of the dishes he recommended. We got most of his recommendations and loved most of the dishes! We ordered: 1) Tableside guacamole 10/10 - loved all the flavors that went into this. I love guacamole in general and everything that was added had an explosion of flavor and texture. Would recommend 2) duck carnitas empanada 8.5/10 - kind of a French inspired twist, the flavor of the duck was delicious but I didn't like the sweet sauce it came with. This was also very filling surprisingly. Very good though 3) almejas al vapor - 9/10 if you like crab and Thai style curries, you'll like this dish. Really enjoyed the flavor of the curry sauce and the flavor is very unique, can't describe it other than it's good 4) short rib tacos 4/10: didn't really care for this. Apparently this taco has mole type or sauce which I learned I don't care for, not my favorite flavor 5) Dungeness crab taco? (forgot what it's called). The crab was very good but the flat bread it came on was very salty. I would say if the bread wasn't as salty I would rate this as 8/10 but because it was salty would rate as 5/10 6) iberico pork pluma- this pork has a high fat content with the meat so the waiter explained this type of pork tastes like steak and I agree, if I had not known it was pork I would have thought this was a delicious NY steak. Very juicy and flavorful! I just didn't like the mushrooms it came with, as the mushrooms were marinated with Maggi sauce, a very salty soy sauce that took away from the flavor of the pork in my opinion. Overall we are glad we tried this, the meat itself is 9.5/10 but we did not like the mushrooms Cocktails were also delicious! We got the mezcal corn one and the last word(?) cocktail with mezcal, both were delicious! The restaurant also knew we were celebrating our anniversary and provided us a complementary dessert that we loved! The pumpkin bread is so good! 10/10 after eating this meal!
