This is a true Mexican restaurant! First the I love decor, outside they have the building lined with cactus and just makes you feel like you're in Mexico! I came during and lunch and thankfully it wasn't busy. The chips and salsa were just ok (I'm a very harsh critic). My husband got the steak fajitas and it was delicious! A fun Friday night dinner. A strolling Mariachi Band that had an extensive library, including the Eagles as well as "It's a small world". A menu that offered something for everyone. They had a dinner buffet, but I was shopping off the menu this evening................ and I found it, beef tip Chimichanga's, tasty as all get out with enough extra sauce to mix with my re-fried beans. Are you a MexiCAN or a MexiCANT? This place is MexiCAN all the way!! The staff was warm and friendly even though it was close to closing time; they still offered us a table with a smile. We ordered quickly while munching on the fresh chips and salsa, and our meals came out in a flash. At the end of the night you would think the rice would be stale and you'd be getting the bottom of the pot for everything, but the food was just as good as the service! I had a stuffed quesadilla with rice and beans and others ordered tacos and a vegetarian burrito. All the food was flavorful and piping hot. OVERWHELMING. I usually always go in for the buffet, but this time when I got there and it was not available. So I had to order off the Main Menu. The main menu was entirely overwhelming, so many options to choose from I did not even know what to get. There was so many options and variety's of the same things everything started to just blur together. So after taking 10-15 minutes of looking over the options I went with "Marias Burritos" and the description said "2 Beef Burritos covered in Queso" our plates came out fairly quick (We went at 3:45) so a dead time at the restaurant. Based on first looks my mouth started to water, and it smelled AMAZING. This all changes until I cut into it and am greeted with only beef inside my tortilla... no rice, no beans, no lettuce :(. The dish was very filling, and left me uncomfortably full. This may be a misinterpretation on my part of the dishes description, but I was underwhelmed after the realization it was just meat, a tortilla, covered in queso. I think some great recommendations would be to shorten the menu a bit, and portion out just the slightest bit. We will be back for a review on the buffet. read more

I'd driven past this location literally hundreds, if not thousands, of times over the years and for some reason never stopped, until meeting a friend for lunch at El Potro a few weeks ago. Slap heel of hand to forehead - duh! It is now a top go-to. Located on 441 near Roger Williams Ave in Apopka (981 South Orange Blossom Trail), the menu has much to offer, using the freshest quality ingredients and, it's easy to tell, made with love. Today was a good day to stop by and order a medium bowl of chicken soup to go. I wondered why the bag was so heavy. Two portions of soup filled the container, along with a full bag of warm tortilla chips, homemade salsa, and a piece of lime. The soup was loaded with large chunks of chicken, carrots and potatoes; celery, onions, macaroni, seasoned with a hint of chipotle. Tasting it took me back to the kitchen of my Romanian grandmother, whose homemade soup was my favorite. As far as the rest of the menu, it's not often I go to a Mexican restaurant I love...but I love El Potro. Check out their website and/or Facebook page, and don't do what I did just driving by. Mexican food purists stay away!!! I dont know how this place got so many 4 star reviews (probably gringos) but it was nasty. I was visiting from miami and decided to stop in for lunch because my sis lives 2 minutes away and the reviews were good. I am a " taco al pastor" addict so i asked about those. I asked if i could have extra pineapple on mine... and my waiter told me they dont make T.A.P with pineapple. Wait... What? Hold up. How is that possible?? I chalked it up to a regional difference in the way those particular tacos are made... but I should have bolted then. I settled on the buffet because a) no TAP with pineapple B) i was starving. The buffet was a travesty. Selections were underwhelming, limited, random (sauteed mushrooms, why??) and not very appetizing. It didnt look well attended to, either. They had a sad crappy looking salad bar(?) which they should completely scrap and replace with some effing Mexican food. I asked about diferent salsa options because I saw nothing at the buffet to dress my taco with. No chopped onions, no cilantro, not even pico de Gallo, no pickled peppers ...i was told that the salsa that came with my tortilla chips was my salsa option. Sorry, but Im not goung to use the salsa on my taco that the whole table is sharing and double dipping their chips with. In fairness, my waiter offered a hotter red sauce from the kitchen which i declined. But honestly, How are you going to have a Mexican buffet with out salsas on the buffet???? Or cilantro? What the hell? I wouldnt call this place authentic Mexican. Not even tex-mex. I got a nice buzz off of the two margaritas I had while I was there, hence my two star rating. Worst experience ever! I usually go to El Potro in Orlando on Kirkman and I love it so since I was in the mood for Mexican Food and in Apopka I decided to give this location a try! Bad mistake! Such a disappointment! The waitress did not get our orders correct. Then we were so hungry since we did not eat lunch that we tried to eat it anyway especially since the waitress was not attentive at all in spite of us being the only patrons in the restaurant. (The Waitress and Cashier mostly sat by themselves in a booth chatting and ignored us.) We ordered a combo all beef and she brought us a combo with chicken and beef. The meal was too salty and lacked any Mexican seasonings. It tasted more like very bland sloppy joe sauce or generic Manwich out of the can but much less tasty. The beef tasted strange like it was not beef at all. Since it did not taste at like beef I hope that they did not feed us ground horse and or goat! When the waitress did show up to take our plates my Mom tried to tell her that the food was too salty and tasted bad but the waitress did not apologize. In fact, the waitress gave my Mom the stink eye and just walked off. (Now I understand why the restaurant was empty since the food was horrible and the service was very poor!) The cashier came over and gave us our check and when I went to pay she did not ask how our meal was. This was the worst meal and service ever! The best food comes off the menu, the buffet is not as good. Watch out for Friday nights, it's Mariachi band night. I really liked this place. It's authentic, they have a buffet, and the staff is very welcoming. Although the buffet looked delicious, I opted for queso dip and chips to start followed by tacos al pastor. Both were very, very good. The queso wasn't too thick or thin and had just the right flavor. The tacos, though! Man, those tacos were so good. The pork was seasoned just right and was topped with cilantro and onions. I almost asked for hot sauce but didn't need it after the first bite. I'm told they sometimes have a live band that will visit your table, but they were not present when I visited. Would have been neat to see that, maybe next time! If you're in the Apopka area, check this gem out! read more

I visted the place on a saturday around 11am for the lunch buffet. The buffets ( main one and the salad/dessert one) were fully stocked , lots of choices but no shrimp. The lunch buffet is $7.99 and ice tea and sodas $1.99. Chips and salsa are complimentary. Everything that I tried was very fresh and tasty. The enchiladas were very yummy. My daughter really enjoyed the chicken wings and cheese quesadillas. Overall everything was good including the service and the price can't be beat. Yes, we will be back again. read more

The atmosphere and building badly need an update but the Mariachi band and food plus low prices make up for that. I can't speak to these subpar reviews from Mexican "foodies" and "purists", but I've had enough Americanized Mexican food in my day to spot a good one when I see (and eat) it! The Apopka location has a friendly staff and good food; I typically get a burrito or the a la carte beef tacos, and my mom loves the chili rellenos. I've visited the Apopka El Potro at least 25-30x over the last couple of years and have always had a good experience with tasty food. I doubt you'll leave El Potro thinking it's the greatest Mexican food you've ever tasted, but I do think you'll enjoy the food and find it to be a good value for the price point. read more

First off, a previous poster, Danya L., made an incredibly offensive comment about gringos - that they're stupid and know nothing about Mexican food. That person should be banned from yelp as a racist pig. Secondly, I've seen people from all races at El Potro enjoying their lunches. The food is hot, you get good value for your money and most important, El Potro passed its health inspection with flying colors. The servers are friendly, on select nights they have a mariachi band, and they offer a lunch buffet which allows you to build everything from taco salad to tacos to enchiladas and so forth. read more
