I went here last weekend on a Saturday for a night out with some friends.... It was ok... the booths were all taken when we got there so we had to stand at the bar tables in the middle until one opened up.... The band was setting up when we got there, so ordered a few drinks to get us started.... was kinda bummed they didn't have any beer on tap... a can of Modelo was $4.. seriously for a can.. kinda disappointing.... But the band was actually really good. The lead singer was a big dude that busted out with the Sublime hits and flash back 80's / 90's jams... We met a few fine fellows...LOL.. yeah right! one seriously reminded me of Party Boy from Jackass.. He was too funny!!! Went here for Taco Tuesday last night. Nice ambiance very packed and a little loud, service was just okay. Took awhile to get seated thats understandable considering how busy it was, but even then our table wasn't even cleaned until later. To order took awhile to get our drinks and the tacos are decent, definitely better just down the street and our waitress knew before hand we all wanted separate checks, but instead brought us a bulk check at the end. Disappointed...good drinks and good music...I had to go get my drinks at the bar because the servers were nowhere to be found...so I started a tab with the bartender..when a server finally showed up she wouldn't take my drink order because I had a tab at the bar...really...I will tip you both if you deserve it...server gets zero tip and zero orders from me...and then she screwed up the tabs of several of our guests so badly that she ended up being the joke of the night... read more

Camarillo has a surprising lack of decent Mexican food, but El Rey is its saving grace. The tacos are affordable and excellent, and the fajitas are even better. Lots of quality drink options as well. You'll be intrigued by $1 Taco Tuesday, but it's so crowded on those nights (seems to be a hot spot for CSUCI students) that I'd rather come any of the other 6 days of the week and spend slightly more, and even then, prices are very reasonable. The service can sometimes be spotty, especially since you usually seat yourself and wait for someone to notice you've arrived, but any wait is usually worth it. read more

I've been to this bar a few times and never have been disappointed, I love their wet burritos!! Their breakfast is really good as well. Nice place to come watch some games and try their assortment of tequila! My bartender recommended a tequila called Corzo (I'm not a big fan of tequila) but it was so smooth and tasted great, didn't even need lime and salt! read more

I've eaten at both the ventura and camarillo restaurants on numerous occasions in the past and have enjoyed the food and service. However, yesterday's dinner experience was less to be desired. Only one waitress was attending to 10 to fifteen parties at six to seven p.m. It took approximately forty minutes after I ordered a simple dinner for two, i.e. enchiladas and tacos, for the food to appear. I honestly was about to leave right before the food appeared. Management obviously needs to address the wait staff shortage and deal with any issues in the kitchen. read more

I have read some of these reviews and they make me laugh that people are so quick to complain that they are not catered right away like patience was lost decades ago or the fact that prices will go up and life gets expensive in general. If you want cheap drinks grab a case of keystone and chill at home. I have seen so many changes come from this bar and the direction is positive. I like the fact that I can walk in everyone that knows you by first name basis because they make an effort to talk to you. From the daytime bartender (Rebecca) to the night bartenders (Steven, Jess, Nicole) even to the servers (Nando) that always says what's up, stops and talk about your day and hustles to make sure you have the best experience. I live about 200 yards from this place and I have to say this place is the most hip delicious joint ive come across in years. When you walk the Bar manager (christian) greets you with a smile and tells you to sit any where you like. You sit down and imediatley get chips and salsa and waters from a friendly knowledgeable waitress. They have fantastic selections of tequila and are happy to give you a taste. If you are new to the Cantina I reccomend coming on a Tuesday for there taco tuesday special.. 1.00 street tacos that are so Delicious they make establos or el tapatio look bad. try the al pastor its BOMB. just go there and have fun.. Oh yeah they also Have this extremely talented Red hot chili peppers tribute band there and is completely off the chain awesome. read more

Drinks were weak, food was bland and not as described. The guacamole barely had any onions or tomatoes and no lime or salt. So it was basically mashed avocado void of any flavor. Quesadillas as described on the menu were supposed to have onions, tomatoes, etc but arrived only with cheese. Drinks were $10 and incredibly weak, couldn't even taste the alcohol. My friend ordered street tacos and they only had the meat and shell, no guac or veggies. Cooks seemed like they didn't want to cut any vegetables as we had issues with every item we ordered. This place has the best burrito I have ever tasted. My boyfriend and I were in the Camarillo area for the weekend in December 2010. We were looking for food near our hotel and this was one of the closest places. Everything around it appeared to be closed. We wandered in, and I loved the decor immediately. It's almost like an old time saloon with greaser touches. I found it really unique. We both got the El Rey burrito served wet style with cheese and enchilada sauce. I had chicken and my boyfriend got steak. We were in love on the very first bite. I have never had a burrito that was so incredibly fresh with such a great meshing of flavors. I still fantasize about that burrito to this day. I sometimes think about going out to Camarillo just so I could have that burrito again. Marginal at best. The carnitas was very good, the chicken gross. They dipped the tortillas in oil, not fried, just oily. The brix was way off on their soft drinks making them watery. The huge basket of chips were good, but a huge amount for two people. The tacos were served plain and we weren't informed of the salsa bar ... Ok if you've been here before. The decor was ok but worn out. They had folding metal chairs with grossly oversized cushions thrown on and the booth seats were cracked. Our waitress was ditzy and we had to listen to the other waitress talk about her drunken escapades the night before. Really? P.S. There really was wilted cilantro thrown on the chips. How about a little chili lime seasoning instead? Up your game people!!! read more

We pop in often for happy hour after work, but also a few late nights have been had. El Rey is a mixed bag.... here is a list of what to expect. 1- Good vibe Elvis portraits on the walls, usually good tunes playing (only heard them play something from The King's once though, oddly enough), and friendly patrons. I've worked in several restaurants and bars in my day, and this is one of the more laid back good old fun types. Definite win. 2- Good food The "street tacos" for $1 at happy hour can't be beat. In price and in flavor. Get the al pastor if you know what's what. The "el rey burrito" is also delicious, although authentically mexican doesn't come to mind. Still, great taste in everything my coworkers and I have tried, but stick to happy hour prices. UNFORTUNATELY, it seems that recently they have decided to tighten their pockets and cut down noticeably on the portion size. 2 weeks ago we ordered hot wings on happy hour and got 6 pieces...now only 4 show up. 3- Mostly great staff 9 out of 10 of their employees always have a smile on their face and know how to hold a friendly conversation. Sadly, what holds El Rey back from getting a full 5 stars is a couple of bad apples. A couple servers must have bad days, everyday, because they seem to have forgotten how to smile. And that attitude shows in their table service. Yes it can be a sucky job, I've done it, but at least try to fake it. At the bar, the same problem goes for one of their bartenders, but whats worse is she pours light. Noticeably light. So light that I would recommend you order any mixed drink in its individual parts, and then proceed to mix it for yourself into a glass so you know you actually get what you pay for (yes even at happy hour prices! If I had wanted a plain glass full of soda, I would have said that!). And to top it off, she doesn't pay attention. She walked away mid order several times, and ignored empty glasses when she clearly saw them. Basically a lazy employee. All the other bartenders, male and female, have awesome attitudes, mean drinks, and plenty of laughs. I wish I could give them their 5 stars separately! Long story short... try the food and enjoy the drinks, but only during happy hour, and make sure whoever serves you actually has a smile on if you want to have a good time. read more

Caught the end of happy hour, stayed for dinner and dessert. Great margaritas! The live music was so good, we didn't want to leave. Awesome chips and guacamole, really great salsa bar with unique and flavorful selections, street tacos with delicious meats and flavors, and fried ice cream to top it off. Went for a Taco Tuesday and the tacos were a good price along with tasting really good. They do come plain when you order them, but they have a salsa bar that will fix that problem. The service wasn't great, but it also wasn't horrible. If you can get past that for the sake of tacos then you should be okay. read more

Great little restaurant! Was craving a tastey margarita and the (very sweet) waitress recommended the skinny margarita (which was delicious!) I got the street tacos (which paired magnificently) and my husband got the steak fajitas (which apparently were amazing haha). Went for "Taco Tuesday" last night. Some ups and downs. Atmosphere is nice. With jams and mostly friendly servers. Their taco Tuesday menu is a great deal. Except that you have to pay for chips. Each time. $3 a basket... come on. The tacos were delish ($1/ea). Beer was cold ($3.50/ea). And while they were busy- I asked for the check and it took 30 min for them to give it to me.
