There have been some changes to the menu over the years, but I consistently return for the barbacoa. However, my last visit, I opted for green chile enchiladas. I am glad I did! The tortillas were fresh and thick. The green sauce and cheese were plentiful. The beans weren't as good as they usually are, so I added a spoonful of salsa to give them flavor. I like variety of salsas and vegetables that you can add to your meal. I am a big fan of the sauteed onions. As I prepare to leave Albuquerque for a while, I have been hitting as many of my old "favorites" as I can. I have to admit, El Taco Tote had fallen out of the rotation. In an era when excellent taco shops are popping up in every neighborhood, heading to the chain was not as appealing. But for those who remember, Taco Tote was a front runner. They were one of the first taco restaurants. Their combination of freshly charred meat, flotillas made in front of you, and a large salsa bar quickly gained traction with base personnel, UNM, and the International District. So, I dropped in to give it one more go, an ode to a lot of great memories of family lunches and work catering events. I'm glad to say, it's still good. Same flavors, same tortillas (although I was sad the little lady that made them forever was not there any more). Salsas are still tasty, the meat was nicely charred (if a little dry). Same little box (container) for a small portion of chips, requiring you to sneak up multiple times to satisfy your dip craving. Honestly, there are better tacos across Albuquerque now, but El Taco Tote still stands up. The tacos are good, the prices are fair, and the service is good. I'll miss you guys! read more

Well, nobody in this town knows how to make a fish taco. These guys are definitely not the exception, but it did taste good they give you a limited amount of napkins with no access to that anymore. Unless you go up to the front, the rice and beans were pretty good not like great or anything like that but they have a full complementary bar of salsa and stuff like that. They do give you a little bit of chips with your meal, but honestly, nobody in this town could make a good fish taco. read more

This is the worst takeout experience I have ever had in my entire life. No, I am not being dramatic- please see photos for proof. I ordered two mushroom tacos with lime, guacamole, pico de gallo, and toreado chile. When opened, it was mushrooms slapped in a flour tortilla with nothing else. My husband ordered the asada "skillet" and was missing lime, onion, green chile, red chile, AND guacamole. It was just meat and tortilla. The last, perhaps most offensive thing we received was the "fish taco." One disgusting piece of fish in a flour tortilla, missing all the ingredients I added: lime, pico de gallo, and cilantro. All of this order looked and tasted terrible and I would highly recommend NO ONE eat at this establishment. I am floored at the positive reviews. Today I ordered a Burrotote with Barbacoa and one side didn't have any meat but one small piece. It was nothing but rice and beans. When brought it up to the manager he refused to look at it and said if I wanted more meat I had to pay more. I already paid $15 for something that should have had meat. I have to say we have come by here many times and were across the street at the antique places and came in and oh boy this is one of our new favorite places. Very friendly staff and ordered our food and it came to us pretty fast. The atmosphere was really laid back and a lot of families were here and the space for seating probably seats over 100 people with tables and chairs and booths. My son stated that it is in his top 5 for places we have tried for tacos and the meat was perfect. They have an area with at least 20 toppings and sauces to choose from. Favorites were the jalapeño and avocado salsas for me. They have parking both in front and rear of the business and they also have drive thru and a patio area. I thought I'd time-traveled back to the Ice Age because that's how long I waited--20 minutes! For what, you ask? For the most disappointing taco special to ever disgrace a corn tortilla. My $15 prize consisted of a set of sad pork adobada tacos that looked like they'd given up on life before they even hit the grill. Imagine this: a single, tired corn tortilla, filled with nothing but uninspired meat. No toppings, no love, no hope--just despair in taco form. And the sides? Oh, they were something alright. The refried beans? Diarrhea in disguise. The rice? Drier than the last five seasons of your least favorite TV show. I've had toast that's more hydrated. Then, there was the horchata. I took one sip and questioned every decision that led me to that moment. It was like someone dissolved a bag of sugar in some watered-down, milk-flavored regret. I'm convinced they were serving a science experiment gone wrong. I came here looking for a meal but instead got a masterclass in what not to do with Mexican cuisine. Came here 5 years ago on a visit to area and really loved it. Came back in 2021 and what a difference, down hill big time. We waited in line for almost 40 minutes to a cashier who acted like it was his first day. Tasty fast fresh mexican food worth stopping in for. The carne adovada in the skillet was okay, but the carne asada was even more moist and flavorful than expected. The queso fundido with vegetables (mushrooms) was amazingly just a slab of cheese melted over what appeared to be butter and topped with mushrooms and was decadently delicious. The unassuming potato was soft & creamy with a huge slab of butter shoved into it to melt and smother it. They serve a few different salsas, none of which are amazing, but do add some nice flavor and moisture. The friendly quick service ensures we will be back to try more from the menu. read more

Good authentic Mexican tacos! We ordered 4 barbacoa tacos and four fish tacos. They make fresh corn tortillas right in front of you that are a little larger and a lot better than other taco places. I was only able to finish two tacos because they give you such generous sized tacos. Maybe you enjoy dressing your own tacos, if so they have a nice garnish bar so you can fix it on up. When I order tacos I want them ready to eat loaded with all the goodness already and that's how I'm use to having it. I don't want to guess what sauces and garnishes will make these taste amazing. Pricing is excessive. This place is on Central. It's looks like a low end fast food joint. So why are they charging almost $40 for 8 tacos? I don't know. What I do know is there's some amazing taco joints that give you your tacos already loaded for a lot less. I just don't get how they think their prices are justified, but what do I know, I'm just a foodie. read more

This is my favorite Mexican fast food restaurant. I believe this is a chain out of Juarez Mexico. The concept is so simple, grilled meat, tortilla and a salsa bar. The meat is freshly grilled to order, you can order by the taco, by 3/4 lbs., by the lbs. and the have combos. The tortillas are also fresh made, I love their flour tortillas. Thinner than a "normal" tortilla but with very good flavor and texture. The salsa bar is well stocked with a wide variety of salsas, but beware, some of them are very spicy. They do have free chips so you can sample all the flavors. The staff is always friendly but sometimes they're understaffed which can delay the salsa bar getting refilled and tables getting bused. read more

Once a week, on a day somewhere between Monday and Wednesday, I get a taco craving. I'm always looking for a street taco-type experience since those have always been the best tacos. Taco Tote delivered in that department. Any meat you could think up wrapped in a yummy corn tortilla, nestled in a piece of foil keeping it warm while you prepare to dig in. I'm not a huge fan of this area at night and the construction is annoying, but worth the trek from the East. The staff were friendly and the food was made to order. This place is a sleeper hit for ABQ. Sure, it's not all about the cheese (like New Mexican fare), but if you genuinely like Mexican style tacos, this-is-your-place! First of all, they make their own tortillas in-front-of-your-face! You get free chips and salsa (and all the salsas are good), and lastly this place is truly affordable! We had a party of 15 for Saturday evening, 1/27/23, and they took such good care of us. All orders were correct, and everyone was very happy with the quality of their food. My husband and I had the sirloin platters and they were delicious. The variety of sauces were a big hit with everyone, prompting numerous returns to the cart for more. I've driven by this place so many times and never stopped because of the abundance of good new Mexican and Mexican food here... But looking for something quick where I didn't have to get out of the car but did not wanna go to the fast food route I ordered here. In hindsight next time I will either eat in or go in and order my food. Process could be improved hence only 4 stars. Gotta leave room for slight improvements. Had I known they had such an extensive salsa bar inside I would've like to try some more varieties... With that said the hot salsa was definitely hot and so good, the tortillas were fresh and delicious, and the meats we had were all very tasty. Everybody talks about the price of each taco but, they are big, and I think it's pretty comparable to other places out there, especially during the times we're having now. I've discovered Nob Hill. Really, there's not much of a reason to go anywhere else. This is the same street that Kerouac walked, or hitched on to get to California...okay, now that that's over with. My hotel is by nothing. That's irritating. So, I drove the other way, kind of remembering where Nob Hill was. I'm glad I found this place. It doesn't break the bank. I have to get used to tacos without cheese. But I suppose I can. The prices are right, and the tacos are good. I ordered enough food for 2 nights. I didn't pay over 13.00 for it. Cheap and good. This place has a hella big salsa bar. I've not seen so much different salsa in one salsa bar before...(Kansas City places, take note of this). Oh yeah, there's the computerized Coke machine. Nob Hill, you've got my heart. I intend to spend bunches of time there. But, for tacos, even though it looks commercial, El Taco Tote is good, and best of all, it's open on Mondays. Absolutely horrible! We got the pork and chicken burrito plates. They were the smallest burritos I've ever gotten. I mean like the size of a Taco Bell bean burrito. Completely plain just meat and a tortilla, no pico, no cabbage, no cheese, nothing! The fish tacos were just two pieces of overcooked fish in a tortilla, nothing else in there! We got some salsa on the side but I have never had a fish taco with literally nothing but fish on it. Oh and the quesadilla was a joke! It was made on the smallest tortilla ever! Wouldn't even be enough for a child. Also so expensive!! It cost $38 for two burrito plates, 2 fish tacos and a quesadilla. Salsa Bar! If I could leave it at that I would, because they have the best in town. But El Taco Tote is so much more than that. Freshness is key to the deliciousness of this place. The kitchen is open and you can see them cooking while you wait in line to order your food at the counter. Choices of meat go from sirloin, adobada, bistek, shrimp, barbacoa, asada, chicken and even some veggie options. They also serve a variety of breakfast including bacon waffles. There are about 7 different salsas ranging in taste and heat to go with fresh chips, all you can eat. I love this place. 2 of us can eat, have a soft drink, drown ourselves in salsa and still have left overs for around $20. This place is a must-visit every time we trek down to visit the antique/thrift shops on Central. If we're lucky, they're making tortillas, which keeps my son entertained for at least 10 minutes. The food is always fresh... my husband jokes that we are the only gringos in the joint, which to me guarantees some good Mexican food. This is not New Mexican, but true Mexican "fast food". Fresh, hot, and fast. The husband gets a chicken burro-tote and I get the tacos... never the same meats twice. All are equally good and unique. Get the shrimp if you like spicy food! And, of course, the salsa bar. That's the real reason to go. 5-6 salsas, pico, peppers, cucumbers and and assorted other garnishes. Plus hot chips. Heaven. We love it.
