Even thought it has chainish vibes it was surprisingly good. We did pick a day that was busy, but I think they moved through the line relatively well. All the servers were kind and patient we started off with margaritas and guacamole dip. We really love the guacamole dip because it had chunks of avocado versus the smashed version you find in most places. The menu is a little busy, but by everyone's reactions, the options were nice to have. I'm usually not a big refried beans, guy, but they make theirs extremely well. The ceviche was excellent with nice amounts of fish. The tortillas could've been a little bit better but still good and the chips in salsa were also good. Services fast and attentive. We came in here for a late dinner (845-9PM) and they still had a lot of people eating and/or coming in for dinner. Great energy in this restaurant with everyone enjoying their dinner and laughing. Our server was very friendly and did a great job. We ordered tacos and the carne asada. The carne asada was the star of this dinner - lots of flavor and great quality. Our tacos were just ok. We tried Adobada, Carne, Carnitas, Barbacoa. The meat flavors were very dull and did not have a lot of flavor at all. From the staff to the owners (Manny rocked it out) they are great people. Coming from Fort Mohave and BHC AZ. We spend 4-5 nights a week at our couple of favorite mexican places so we eat a ton of mexican everywhere. The Carne asada tacos are legit like in Mexico and Baja, not the commervial crap either. Thier tomatio is so good, that after the owner gave me the standard Tapatio hot sauce i asked for, he said try it with just the tomatio...good greif, i had almost forgot how good real $hit is. Came in at 4pm on a Friday after a day of boarding and man did the food hit the spot! My husband got a chicken, ground beef and shredded beef taco plate. I just ordered the tostada de civeche for a meal. And man oh man. Delicious! Manny helped us and he was efficient and kind. We took his recommendations and they were spot on. We ordered carne asada tacos and a burrito with carne asada and the difference in the meat between the two were insane. Our tacos were real carne asasa, while the burrito tasted like hamburger meat. We asked someone about this and she disregarded our comment and said they were the same, yet they looked and tasted completely different. If she's correct, great! but the person we talked to did not even acknowledge our question and didnt even look at the difference in the meat texture and size is what threw us off about this place. If you work in the restaurant industry you should at-least acknowledge the persons question. We then paid cash, which our server did not take off the credit card fee, which we were going to tip 20% despite the asada fiasco because that's not her fault, but to try and snag extra money from us is ridiculous. read more

Off the hook Carnitas tacos. If you order anything before you die, have the Carnitas. Two tacos is plenty as these are no ordinary streets taco's that you down in two bites, These are to be savored. This place was amazing! I absolutely recommend it. The food was all great from steak to fajitas to the torta, tostada, churros, and flan. The margaritas were fantastic and you can get normal sizes and jumbo. The best was our waiter, Jose Luis. He was such a great hype man and so friendly and helpful with chosing what to eat. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food be sure to stop in here. Based on the stellar yelp reviews we decided to check this place out for lunch a couple days ago, especially because there are Carnitas are supposed to be amazing. Our server was delightful couldn't of been friendlier and happier. My husband ordered the Carnitas plate and I ordered two Carnitas tacos, we did get a couple margaritas and some chips and salsa are complementary with your meal. We both tanked up and had plenty of leftovers to make a delicious dinner. This is a small chain have locations in the Southwest that I will be on the lookout for when we are on the road. The family and I went here after a whole day out and hiking. The food is plentiful. The service is warming and diligent. The ambiance is colorful and each booth makes the experience intimate. We are a family-operated restaurant that has its roots in Grand Junction, Colorado. We opened our first restaurant back in 2002 and have been expanding ever since. Our dishes are carefully cooked and flavored in the traditional Jalisco style. When you dine here, we work to make you feel at home!

Meet the Business Owner: Manny G.

After opening our first restaurant back in 2002, a food truck in Grand Junction, Colorado, we were overwhelmed by the support we saw from the community. We were fortunate enough to be able to open a second location in 2007. Since then we've been expanding to meet the demand of Mexican food lovers all over the state and have most recently opened a location in Arizona. We hope to see you here soon!

The portions were huge -- honestly, we probably could have split just one dish because it was enough for both of us and still left us with leftovers for another meal. The two dishes were pretty similar overall, but if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the Stuffed Sopapilla. A sopapilla is a light, puffy, hollow fried bread, which I felt held the ingrediants better. Take any of the high ratings for this place with a grain of salt. We found it to have very mediocre, commonplace Mexican food (that restaurants in Flagstaff like MartAnnes do far better) and terrible service. Last time we decided to give them another chance (on an admittedly busy weekend), we were told it would be 30-35 minutes. 45 minutes later we were still way down the list and we, along with other people getting frustrated by the mismanagement, tried to find out what was going on. Staff basically went back and forth with each other (in Spanish) instead of addressing us directly and no one seemed to know what was going on. No apologies were issued whatsoever. El Tapatio is a total gem! From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed. The atmosphere is lively and fun, but still cozy enough for a relaxed dinner. The food was incredible. Everything tasted fresh and authentic, from the salsa to the entrees. Seriously, some of the best Mexican food I've had in Arizona. But what really made our experience special was the staff. This is the best Mexican food I have had in a long time. Like another reviewer suggested I ordered the Dragon margarita and it was delicious! The servers were so friendly and took a genuine interest in interacting with our kids. But the huge omg moment for me was seeing crispy chile rellenos on the menu. I have be searching, searching! for a deep fried relleno as most places do not prepare them this way. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Favorite Mexican food in Flagstaff! Everything on the menu is spectacular! Their relleno's are excellent, especially the crispy rellenos! Best beans and rice in town. Similar to the old Casa Bonita that is now Cane's chicken. Their margaritas are the best, unbelievably tasty. Service is lightening fast. You never wait more than 8-10 minutes for your meal to arrive. Absolutely fantastic. Wish they made carnitas (pork) but so many wonderful things to chose from!!! read more

We spent the morning hiking, went back to rest, explored a local bookstore, grabbed ice cream, and walked to our dinner reservation. Not one alcoholic drink had been consumed by anyone in our group the entire day. Not one. We also had a child with us. The only conversation we had with the host before being seated was asking whether it was okay that we had arrived about twenty minutes early for our reservation. We were polite, excited, and looking forward to dinner. Then my husband ordered a beer. The waitress immediately refused because she claimed the hostess believed my husbands speech and mannerisms meant he was intoxicated. Read that again. A guest who had consumed zero alcohol all day was judged to be intoxicated. I understand the responsibility restaurants have. If someone is genuinely impaired, absolutely don't serve them. Every responsible restaurant should protect its guests and its liquor license. But there is an equally important responsibility that seems to have been forgotten: making sure your judgment is actually right before labeling someone. There was no bar crawl. No cocktails beforehand. No wine tasting. No brewery stop. No hidden drinks. There wasn't even one drink. We left feeling embarrassed, confused, and honestly caught off guard. Not because a beer was refused, but because a person was reduced to an assumption based solely on how they naturally presented themselves. Here's what makes the experience even harder to understand. After leaving Shift, we walked to Atria, where we remained for approximately two hours. We talked, enjoyed ourselves, and spent the evening there without issue. If someone in our party had truly been intoxicated wouldn't that have been obvious there as well? It wasn't. Food can be good. Cocktails can be creative. Service can be polished. None of that matters if hospitality disappears the moment someone doesn't fit your expectation of what a guest "should" look or sound like. Maybe perhaps because we weren't locals we seemed off ? To anyone considering Shift, especially if you're traveling with someone whose speech, mannerisms, or disability could be misunderstood, know that this was our experience. I hope the restaurant reflects on what happened and asks itself a difficult question: How many guests have we mistaken for being intoxicated when, in reality, they simply communicated differently? Because that's not just a missed beer. That's a missed opportunity to treat someone with dignity. I came to Flagstaff excited to discover one of its most " creative" restaurants. Instead, I left wondering how quickly a restaurant built on hospitality could make a guest feel so unwelcome. Simply , because my husband is a restaurant manager in Las Vegas, who has managed restaurants like Yellowtail, Herbs&Rye, Gjelina, and Edo we left out of respect for the industry. However, we should have got our deposit automatically refunded. Next time, take the time. Take the time to care. If a staff member is under this assumption, management intervene not to just follow said assumption and repeat what she said, but to hold an actual conversation with your guest, to evaluate , to observe, to understand. I promise you, that would change so many things for you.
