We walked into Salsa Brava on rainy Monday evening for dinner. It wasn't too busy at 5:30PM and we were seated immediately at a six person booth for our party of two. Overall the service was very prompt and friendly, a welcome experience after hiking outside most of the day. The restaurant itself is an interesting blend of Tex-Mex and Native American cuisine, with frybread living alongside cheesy lunch combos and plenty of dairy rich cream sauces. Chips & Salsa (Complimentary) - The chips are normal white corn tortilla chips, nothing really to comment about. Salsa Brava has three types of salsa. The first is a mild pico with fresh tangy tomatoes, red onions, and cilantro stem in a watery base that's somewhat sour from citrus. The second is a medium spicy salsa that's a bit warming, filled with comforting smoky and tomato flavors. The last is the spiciest, but doesn't really top out much higher than spicy jalapeno. It's so fruity at the start it's almost like drinking salted pineapple juice. Navajo Taco ($19.50) - The base is a piece of frybread around 7 inch in diameter. It's rather thin, not puffy at all, making it somewhat dense and chewy. The frybread is slathered with some refried beans that are tender and thick. They aren't pureed until completely uniform; instead, there are some pinto pieces strewn throughout. On top is a mound of their famous carnitas, full of pork flavor, seasoned well and braised until very tender, almost fall-apart so. There's a tiny bit of a tang but I'm not sure I can identify the flavor as citrus as the menu indicates. Plenty of cheese is melted on top, then a pile of mixed lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, and lime creme. Finally, there's a huge mound of sour cream. It all adds up to an extremely filling meal. It's fatty, it's rich, it's decadent. It sits so heavily in the stomach that it feeds two very hungry people. On the side, they give a small cup of Mexican rice. It has some charred bits inside and also some whole corn kernels. It's pretty much the perfect texture, no complaints. (5/5) Stuffed Sopapilla ($19.50) - Even with the taco being so rich, this dish is even more so. It's the same frybread base, but folded over with tons of ingredients stuffed inside, placed on a bunch of lime creme, and then topped with even more dairy. The lime creme is interesting in that it doesn't really taste like crema. For some reason, I taste nutmeg which reminds me heavily of alfredo sauce. On top is a bunch of melted cheese and cilantro cream, and then some diced onion, cilantro, and pickled onion. There's not enough acidity for that much richness from the rest of the dish. And that's why they give a side of sour cream. Which also adds more dairy richness, but also a pleasing tangy note. There's so much varied dairy, there's probably enough saturated fat to make even a cardiologist blush. Stuffed in the sopapilla there's even more cheese! And then refried beans and a ton of pulled chicken. The chicken is surprisingly moist - usually dishes with this many fatty and saucy elements means the chicken is an afterthought and cooked until super dry. This one's actually quite nice though, seasoned well with great chicken flavor. (5/5) Both plates are broiled so everything is warm and the cheese is all melty and delicious. This is one of the few places I've visited where they give you a ton more food than the menu pictures online indicate. Even with us hiking the entire day, we could not finish more than half of each plate. I feel like this is one of those restaurants which I wouldn't have given such a high review if I hadn't been ravenous going in. But I can only rate on how much I enjoyed the food as I ate it - and for that, Salsa Brava deserves a 5. Wait, what?! A trio of salsas?! Winner! We actually happened into this place because our initial plan of Italian was foiled by a 45 minute wait. Winner! Happy hour margaritas?! Winner!! I mean, how much better can it get?! Well...I'll tell you!! The house margaritas are a flavorful blend of sweet, sour and tequila. The happy hour tacos were fabulous! We decided on Mexican tonight and weighed about four or five options, as there are a ton of Mexican restaurants in this town, and ended up here. I got the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans combo, which was delicious, and mom got smoked chicken tortilla salad without the tortilla which she said was very good. I liked that the house chips and salsa came with three kinds of salsa. We enjoyed everything about our experience at this restaurant, the food was delicious, the service was great, and the decor was delightful. read more

Stopped in on a recommendation and Salsa Brava delivered. Ordered some of the suggested items and drinks and they all held up. The salsas were unique and stood out from the usual, and the food came out fast and fresh. But the real highlight? Friendliest staff in the Southwest. Delicious!! Three of us had dinner here one night. My son had the classic carnitas plate that came with an enchilada and a tostada too. He loved it. He said the pork was tasty and juicy. My buddy and I had the Navajo Taco, an open faced taco built on top of Indian fry bread. I thought this was super yummy. Delicious Indian bread covered with beans, lettuce and pork. So yummy! We stopped here on our way to Flagstaff airport. The dining room is big, light and colorful with many interesting knick knacks on the wall. The staff seated us immediately. This place used to be so good, I would come here often with my family and we'd enjoy it. Slowly over the last few years the prices skyrocketed while the quality went down. I "almost" paid $22 for a carne asada burrito on my birthday but it was so bad I had to send it back after one bite, then I lost my appetite. What an incredibly mediocre (at best) Mexican food restaurant. We decided to try it based on the number of good reviews, plus being featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives made us think it might be interesting. How wrong we were. This is Mexican food for people who think Macayo's is authentic Mexican. Nothing was particularly good, at all. Their "smoked chicken" is just plain shredded chicken. Everything lacks any sort of distinct flavor. The margaritas are not great, even when you get it made from scratch (they normally just use sour mix, which is even worse). The salsa is bad. The best thing on our plates might have been the rice. For being as mediocre/bad as it is, it is also fairly expensive. If this is some of the best Mexican food in Flagstaff, then I would recommend picking another variety of food when you're here. read more

While staying in Flagstaff my husband & I came here for dinner. Cute decor inside with comfy booths. My hubby had the enchiladas trio plate & loved it! I had the stuffed sopapilla that was so delicious & so huge I got to take home leftovers. They have 3 types of salsa they will bring to the table but we opted for the hottest one, a pineapple habanero that was exceptional. Also enjoyed a couple of prickly pear margaritas. We visited Arizona for vacation. Saw the good review and thought we would give it a try. However, ended up with disappointment. Appreciated the decent size of parking lot, that makes parking easier. We came at around 8pm on a weekday. Still needed to wait for about 20-30 minutes. It was not busy at all, we saw so many open tables once we sat down. Our server was not attentive at all. Asked for napkins, never came back with more napkins. Asked for check, waited for 5 minutes for him to get the machine. Food was just meh. Everything was soaked with oil. We came to Flagstaff from 8 hours away for a weekend away. We were looking for a place to eat for dinner and we drove around and decided to give this place a try The food was very delicious, very friendly staff and the service was amazing. Tex Mex, heavy on the Tex- When researching Mexican eats in the area, I was excited to discover they offered savory sopapillas- We arrived late Sunday afternoon, and were told there was a 45min wait. They provide complimentary chips & salsa- note, they did ask if we'd like more, but the second round was a charge-glad I asked (this was one of the woes of the place- many times our waiter asked if we wanted non-complimentary items extras, without stating they were at cost add-ons until I asked) I ordered the stuffed sopapillas with carnitas-no sour cream- and mild lime creme sauce- My husband ordered the Carnitas Combo- Both plates were very flavorful, bold seasoning, nice kick to them, & stuffed with meat- though the side rice/beans were on the plainer side The sopapillas were beyond smothered in the lime creme & very soggy- was a bit disappointed-it felt more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican cuisine. The salsas and pico were nicely seasoned, very flavorful but the salsas were a little too hot for me. I got the carnitas combo. The chicken on the tostada was dry and the tostada shell wasn't exactly crispy. The carnitas were flavorful, juicy and tender. Food was just OK. Nothing special. My husband and I are visiting our friends in Flagstaff, and the first place they take us to is Salsa Brava. They were boasting to us how the food is good here. We went on a Thursday evening and the place was busy but we were still able to get a table. On the weekends, it's suppose to be super busy. The decor was southwest themed, typical Mexican restaurant. Salsa Bravo We started out going to Fat Olive (a restaurant visited by Guy Fieri) but we were told that it would be an hour and a half wait ... so we drove on down the block to ... Salsa Bravo. A very pleasant Mexican restaurant which had also been visited by Guy Fieri, and like Fat Olive, had been given a well-deserved outstanding review. We were seated immediately in a booth. Our waitress (Arya) was most attentive, and full of energy. My wife ordered the Navajo Taco (with pickled onion). It was huge and very flavorful. (Also, a choice of Guy's). I ordered the 3-taco plate with deep fried taco shells and they also had pickled onion. I took a combination of pork and chicken. My plate was served with rice that was a little dry but I added some sour cream and red salsa and it was great. The chef makes everything fresh from scratch each day, and it shows. Three different sauces are served with your chips. Each with a unique and delicious flavor. We each ordered a margarita to go with our meal. I made a reservation here, on my birthday, because they had two items I really wanted to try: navajo tacos and cheese crisp. I made a reservation for 7:15 but we arrived to our hotel in Flagstaff an hour earlier than that and were starving. I tried to make an earlier reservation but opentable was being glitchy. Fortunately, they were able to seat us about half an hour earlier, which was awesome. We sat in the "cantina" which is basically the bar. Our server was amazing. He was super friendly and very attentive. You could tell that he was making an effort to make our dining experience as pleasant as possible. We both ordered a margarita on their menu, I the spicy one with jalapenos. They were both fantastic. They have two sizes and although I usually go for the larger size, I elected to have the smaller size because I was planning on checking out a brewery in Flagstaff later in the evening. After the first marg, I wanted to try the combo of frozen marg with sangria, and this was amazing. I was so turnt from just two of these drinks that we didn't end up going to the brewery. They definitely don't skimp on the strength at this place. They provided the free chips and 3 salsas which is a lost art these days. The salsas were delicious and unique. We ordered the cheese crisp to start with chilies. It was amazing. It's very similar to pizza. Sometimes the simplest things are the best. I'll have to try to make it at home but probably won't be able to do it justice. I ordered the navajo taco which typically comes with meat but they were gladly able to accommodate my vegetarianism and even offered to substitute veggies (but I hate onions) and something else that I couldn't do for one reason or another. It was AMAZING but gigantic and I'm glad I didn't try to order anything else as I was uncomfortably full afterwards. GF ordered the fish tacos and enjoyed them. For dessert, we were too full to eat there but we elected to take home the sopaipillas for later (later us was grateful for this). I also received a fried ice cream for my birthday. Both desserts were incredible. Absolutely excellent place. I would gladly return regularly if I lived remotely nearby. read more
