El Taquito. I can't believe I've neglected to transcribe your pleasures but I will try to make amends. A warning to the readers out there, with ET I am a specialist. As much as so much of the menu entices me I resist the siren songs of its offerings, and sirenic songs they are, as I can see diner upon diner at table after table immobilized in the joy of the meal before them. I drop in year after year. It would be month after month or week after week but I live 30 minutes driving time away. Dallas is not easy going east-west. I redact the menu to two items: caldo de res and menudo. Pretending to be healthy, wanting to eat light, a weekday? I am stripped of free will and go for the caldo de res. On weekends it is a true coin's toss between the caldo and the menudo. The caldo was vertical food art before there was such a thing. A sublime beef broth--beef, not chiles, or tomatoes, or whatever, just a clear flavorful broth--filled and stacked with Mexican squash, one large piece of peeled potato, a chunk of corn on the cob, a peeled carrot, and a foundation of cabbage. It may be the healthiest soup on the continent; it is one of the top ten best tasting soups in Dallas. The menudo is a chef's menudo. Tender multi-tripes, meaning big, little, honeycombed, hell I don't know how to classify them, I mean I'm a city food eater and a cow had 4 stomachs. But the broth is on the clear side, not greasy and it is certainly delicious. I do stray a little from menudo/caldo. I order refried beans to schmear my corn tortillas when I make tacos with the the beef/tripe and mexican rice, a trick I learned at Laredo Taqueria. Then there is an occasional barbacoa taco. These are not affectations because the ET has the best hot sauce in Dallas in terms of heat and flavor and this sauce demands a taco. Beware its heat and rejoice in it. I may be moving east. If I I am with the east I will explore the rest of the menu 's constellations. But for now I am with the west, and my guiding stars are caldo de res and menudo. Oh, the fine print: cash only. No debits, traveler checks, gift cards plastic paypals or Krugerrands. US currency only, still good for all debts public and private and food from El Taquito. yelp asked about booze. They serve none. It uses to be byob (7/11 a block away), but I heard rumors they don't let beer in. Call ahead. read more

Been coming here since i was little and as a n adult after the club to get that late nite Menudo. And the Best Chips & HotSauce in town! Late the Soft Chicken Tacos in Corn Tortillas has been hitting the right spot. Very nice family owned business. read more

Get this 3 Enchiladas, cheese, beef or chicken with rice and beans OR 2 enchiladas (choice) and a taco with rice and beans OR 3 burritos--steak--with rice and beans. There was another one too, but I forget what it was. Nice menu too. I've had the pork chops before and they were yummy. Food was great! I grew up on this place and just love it. Fabulous chicken enchiladas. Wonderful (hot) salsa. Good tortillas. Biggest iced tea I've every seen at a restaurant. The lunch specials are a steal. Yes, it is a hole-in-the-wall. But, rest assured that you'll feel very safe inside eating with half of the Dallas police force. Hottest Salsa in Big-D! But, that is a good thing! Large menu of Tex-Mex and Mex-Mex! It's all good! My favorite is the Burrito Con Queso with rice and beans! Made with an oversized tortilla filled to the brim with Guiso De Carne meat, a very special spicy sauce, and totally smothered in velvety Queso. You may need a takeout container with it, as it's so big, it hangs off both ends of the plate. You may have to take the remainder home to finish it later. This is a really good Mexican restaurant that I visit when I'm in the neighborhood. They have the usual tex-mex stuff, but you'll also find some authentic Mexican dishes including mole. The grease runs thick here, but the flavors are fresh and superb. However, my favorite thing to get here is breakfast. The place has a good following, but I've never had to wait for a table, and when you're looking to avoid the breakfast/brunch hordes of Dallas, this is a good place to do it. Service improves significantly if you speak Spanish, and everyone I take to eat here seems to love it even though they tend to get a little nervous when they look at the surrounding neighborhood. Parking is in a sketchy little rundown lot a short distance from the restaurant. A word of warning that bears repeating almost everywhere in Dallas: don't leave valuables visible in your car or truck. My uncle had many valuable tools stolen out of his lockbox in the back of his truck while eating here. Enjoy the restaurant, but just remember where you are. read more

This is a staple for lunch during the week, especially on Enchilada Wednesdays. It's fresh, hot, plentiful and cheap! Not a bad combo. I usually get 2 beef enchiladas with chili con carne and I just about lick the plate clean. And the hot sauce...killer! It's always fresh and extremely spicy! I have been coming to this restaurant ever since I was a little kid. My family would come after church on Sunday's and eat caldo and talk with the managers and other guests, it was one of my favorite childhood memories. It's not located in the best part of town but the food is worth the risk. Here's a quick tip, try to park in the front of the business off of Grand Ave...because I have had family who parked on the side of the business and had their vehicle burglarized. However, when you park on Grand Ave, be careful backing out because it is a major street and there are ton of vehicles speeding behind you. The food at the location is very authentic however they also offer tex-mex dishes. I would recommend the Horchata drink which is a large serving. The tea is unsweet but it is still good since I usually prefer sweet tea. Then fajita entree is a large portion. It could serve two people for two meals. I also like the chicken Pechuga. Also the chip and salsas are good and are made fresh daily. The restaurant is family operated. You know it is really good when you see a lot of police officers inside. Cops know where to eat. There are even a few Officers who are part of the family and are operating the cash register. And yes they only accept cash which is not very convenient in this day and age. The staff is friendly and the menu is easy to read. The place is old and consists of traditional decor but it is clean. Someone ppl may not like the area but I am used to the environment. Sure there may be some homeless guys sitting near by but that's only because they know you have cash. You can't use the excuse you don't carry cash only plastic when exiting this place. Be prepared to escape back into a place of nostalgia as soon as you enter the restaurant. If the shelf inches away from the ceiling filled with bottles in the shapes and images of popular cartoon characters from 70s and 80s don't make you reminisce, perhaps the cash register manufactured in the 60s will (only cash is accepted). The Mexican decor is nice, and the live band walking Wednesday walking from table to table singing a tune in Spanish is cool. The food is great. They have the best Tex-Mex enchiladas and tacos I've had in Dallas. The spicy salsa is a must try! The salsa is so spicy, and eaten atop of a chip with butter and a few sprinkles of salt is awesome sauce. The decor and register isn't the only blast from the past they have to offer, the prices are pretty old school too. The service is fast and friendly. One last thing, the plates are piping HOT! This place is very close to the lavanderia. Didn't really feel like subway so went here instead. Got the verde enchiladas and my husband got the fish fillet with fries. The fries were limp and greasy. The fish was mediocre at best. The rice was good. My enchiladas were good, sauce wasn't that spicy which I liked. The lemonade was hella good wasn't too sweet. Service was great. If I were going to come back I'd only come back for the enchiladas. read more

Very simple food. My kids love it because the meats are cooked without the extras like onions and chiles. Prices are great for lunch and the service is quick and accurate. If you like delicious food and quick service over fancy buildings and safe flavors ( by safe flavors I mean mild salsa and middle of the road menu) than this is the place for you. Very tasty and hot salsa and chips start every meal within seconds of sitting down. I always get the horchata to drink and usually migas with chorizo for dinner. The migas which are scrambled eggs with delicious crispy tortilla chips and Mexican sausage . It's perfect with some dabs of yummy salsa.
