Stopped in for an early dinner. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant. The place is colorful and when I walked in, I was met with a very cheerful woman. I was going to dine-in and she told me I could sit anywhere. The nice lady bought out some chips and salsa The chips were warm and crunchy. Both salsa were flavorful, but the red salsa was my favorite. I decided to get the carne asada burrito dinner. My food came out in a flash and it smelled delicious. First I have to say, these are the type of bean I love. Creamy, buttery and it had some whole beans. That first bite was a winner. The rice had a good flavor, maybe it was the achiote. The pork was pretty good but the chicken was totally bland & tasteless. I ordered the 3 taco dinner. 2 fried pork tacos were excellent & 1 shrimp taco that was breaded & not that good. I'd say it's more like a 3.5 but I'll round it up to a 4 because of how well the burrito kept. I ordered a regular vegetarian burrito plus chips and a side of guac. I was impressed that they only charged an extra dollar to add avocado. Interestingly enough, they offer chips and guac with sour cream, which I didn't want, so I realized it was a bit cheaper to get the chips with a side of guac instead. It didn't take too long to get delivered and was nice and hot. As I started eating, I realized that this wasn't really a veggie burrito, it was just a burrito without meat. They didn't replace meat with any seasoned veggies, so it was mostly the same rice/beans/onions/sour cream combo that the others had. The sour cream was pretty liquidy and was dripping everywhere, making it pretty messy to eat and the bottom of the tortilla was getting soggy. Despite this, the half that I couldn't eat held up very well in the fridge and was more flavorful the next day. The chips were not great, they needed some more salt and punch. I really liked the guac though! I probably wouldn't order again unless they have a specific veggie burrito, but it was worth eating when I was craving a burrito. read more

BEST Birria I have had to date - bar none! I was nervous and skeptical but so glad I tried ! Also tried their shrimp taco. It was good, only had about three fried small shrimps inside but overall it was good and tasty with a quality fresh tortilla and lechuga (lettuce). Got the Birria dinner. The dinner comes with two Birria tacos + beans and rice. They also offer another Birria dinner without beans and rice comes with three instead of two. I'd recommend getting the dinner with beans and rice because the beans were divine! It's so difficult to perfect a homemade bean and these reminded me a lot of my grandmas beans ; exceptional! I'm forever on the hunt for the best Mexican food and although we don't have the same choices as Cali, especially So. Cal, I think we still have a great selection of places to have legitimate Great tasting Mexican food here in Chicagoland. But no disrespect to Taco Bell, I actually Saved the Skokie location, because I haven't been back since the 90s. That'll be a different review. There are 4 to 5 Mexican spots just 5 minutes from me but El Tejado rises to the top like the cinnamon in your Horchata. They have a small parking lot which makes it convenient, they've been around a number of years and are open long hours. They're also on Grub Hub - so this all adds to the convenience factor. As for the food, the portions are generous and I like the Chimichanga - which is a deep fried burrito. I know it's not the healthiest but it reminds me of a gigantic egg roll. I can't get enough of that. Uh oh - Pavlov's theory is kicking in as my mouth is starting to water. The burrito, the quesadillas, refried beans; and rice are all very good too. I was craving tacos and wanted to give this place a try. Unfortunately, the tacos here are not for me. I ordered carne asada, tripas, and shrimp tacos. All the tacos were lacking in flavor. The hot sauces also weren't spicy at all. Everything was just okay. My order didn't come with limes, which I definitely think would have brought out more of the flavors. But what I did like was how clean and crispy the tripe was (just ask them to make the tripe extra crispy) . Also, even though my mom didn't like the chewiness of the steak, I didn't mind it! As of today they have 4 stars on Yelp..!??? How! I'll tell you, in this French vanilla area of the Edgebrook neighborhood there's a lack of diverse foods. (Look into the history of Edgebrook). In terms of Latin or Tex-Mex cuisines there is hardly any competition nearby. You'd have to drive several minutes in opposite directions to find decent alternates. Sure yeah, TBK (Taco burrito king) is the next big name nearby but if you've had their food.... I don't understand the star ratings of my peers. This taqueria is a big A-OKAY. You need a quick meal that will satisfy food cravings, there ya go. But if having the ability to get food from a better taqueria (Tex-Mex taco shop) then you must go for it! The food has been decent and price bearable until Covid pricing kicked in. Upgrades which carry Covid price-gouging standards were unbelievable during 2020 & 2021. Pre-Covid up-charges would be $1-2. During Covid we're talking $5+ and on a menu item that is $7, that up-charge rate doesn't make sense. You were just better off ordering two items. But maybe that was their thinking also? Forget paying a $5 up charge for extra meat, just buy a mini burrito. Now you have two meals. Now that we're in a different circumstance these days, we'll have to see how it all shakes out. (The above up-charges for extra meat in entrees like a burrito, taco, entree. The item didn't matter the amount same across the board) Most proteins are overcooked and over seasoned. Their al pastor gets butchered in this way all the time. Sometimes the meat texture can be like Baconbits. I've had to spit inedible hard pieces and other times found small pork bones and not the soft cartilage kind which I would be okay with. While I'm on the topic of ingredients, some just aren't quality. For instance the style of sour cream. If you suffer from any lactose problems, best to avoid altogether. Also, if you aren't planning to eat quickly put the dairy items in the fridge fast. Other reviews mention the taste because of expiry date. Possible or just a lower quality of product. I'm a fan of gorditas and theirs are big/ filling. Stuffed with chosen proteins, lettuce and tomato. Though I don't think it's prepared that often and always one piece of the shell will be thick and mushy. When taqs use this style of dough I wish they would fry it crispy. Way too thick, mushy and tasteless. I've been an occasional diner off and on since they opened years back. I think I continue because their hours work better with me on the commute vs some of their competitors. Taquerias tend not to stay open too late in the nearby suburbs. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for around four years. Without exception, the dine-in service has been excellent, and I've never had an issue with takout orders. It's not a Michelin-star venue, but there is a cozy vibe to this neighborhood eating house. The quesabirria is very good, and the numerous dinner items I've had have all been tasty (meat-, chicken-, pork-, and seafood-based). My family orders from here just about weekly. I feel that the quality of the food has definitely decreased since the place opened. I usually order a burrito suizo dinner. The steak is usually hit or miss. Sometimes it's greasy, sometimes it's over cooked, sometimes it's OK. Not sure what it is, but my assumption is the beans- they typically give a bad stomach ache. There are a ton of places like this all over Chicago, but the one thing I like about this place is the portion sizes are large and the food is not spicy. I got the taco dinner which was three steak tacos with beans and rice. The tacos were stuffed with meat. Along with the great rice and beans, it was certainly filling. It also was flavorful, but not spicy. While I enjoy a good spice, it's a great place for those "flower mouths" out there. We also got guacamole which was pretty good! Everything we ordered had so much flavor. Salsa (especially the red) is really amazing. We tried the steak tacos, steak torta, Al pastor tacos, chicken tamale, and quesadilla. Everything was fantastic. The flavor of the Al pastor was on point. My husband and I both grew up in Chicago and have had our fair share of Mexican food, we have 4 places within a few blocks of us and this one beats out all of them. Never thought I'd venture out to Edgebrook for tacos, but a late-night craving hit and this was the only place in the area that was still open. We were feeling rather lazy so driving to Niles wasn't even an option... We called to place our order 40 mins before closing, and the lady that we spoke to on the phone couldn't have sounded any friendlier. We just weren't used to that kind of customer service so late at night (especially from a quick-serve) that we were a bit taken aback! They've got a ton of menu offerings, from breakfast to seafood dishes. Got the taco dinner. I tried the al pastor and the camaron (shrimp) tacos. Al pastor was good and was seasoned well. The camaron was breaded, which I totally didn't expect. Rice was a little dry but not horrible. I didn't care for the refried beans. Other photos posted on here show the refried beans to still have whole pinto beans in them, so not sure why the one that came with our dinner was completely mashed. Someone else mentioned in the comments that the steak doesn't taste like steak. That's putting it mildly. I also ordered some chicken tacos, but I ended up tossing them. They have a parking lot. Lots of choices & combos at reasonable prices. Fresh made chips and salsa hit the table with your menu. Generous portions. Delicious. My new local addiction. The "chicken" was gray inside the "chicken" tostada - (maybe road pigeon or a raccoon). It did not look anything like chicken should. Three bites into the meal and I threw it all away. Chicken tacos were good but shrimp tacos were quite disappointing. First it was breaded shrimp, which the menu did not say, otherwise I wouldn't have ordered them. The place is clean but the oddest shaped interior of any restaurant I've ever been in. They're confined to the weird triangular architecture that affects the interior. Ordered delivery through Grubhub. The order came wrong, plus the vegetarian tacos tasted terrible. They arrived stuffed with bland rice, lettuce, warm tomato, cheese, and avocado. I specified no cheese or sour cream, but they came with cheese anyway. When I called to report the error and to send them back and get a substitute, they told me they couldn't help me, but I should call grubhub. I then called grubhub who said they'd reach out to the restaurant, and when they did, they said the restaurant would not send me a replacement. Grubhub did refund the tacos, but the dinner was ruined. Can't see why they wouldn't want to fix their error. I won't order again. read more

It was a good place to stop and have a quick meal. The service was pretty normal, nothing bad nothing amazing. Same with the food. It tasted like something I would get at taco burrito king or los comales. My boyfriend and I sat down at our table and waited for our food to be cooked. A worker came by and put a dish of tortilla chips on the table. That was it. We both looked at each other and were pretty confused. No salsa came with it. Just plain (unsalted) tortilla chips. They were kinda annoying to eat but we didn't want to leave any to waste. We were just kinda confused. Also, when ordering they asked if we wanted a drink and we said water. We never got cups or never got any water. I ordered the taco dinner with steak and it was good but nothing too amazing just your average tacos. But it definitely filled me up for the rest of the day. This is a very average place to get Mexican food from. I have only gotten the tacos and they were average. I would recommend this place as a decent price quick bite type thing.
