Probably OK for smaller gatherings, but hardly adept at handling a very large party. You have been warned. After a wedding rehearsal for some friends, we all cavorted over to El Torito for the rehearsal dinner. They had asked days prior if we could make a reservation and were told no - they only take call-aheads. Not that it was necessary, as when we arrived there were exactly six other patrons in the entire place. But that still didn't seem to alleviate the fact that they were severely understaffed for our party of 40 people, as we had ONE waitress trying to handle us all. We dined on chips & salsa for the better part of an hour before our food slowly began to arrive. I actually felt worst for the lone waitress, who was trying to get all of these scalding plates in front of everyone. Even the managers were helping her since they apparently had no other waitstaff available. The climax occurred when she accidentally tilted a sizzling fajita plate onto the back of one of our party, who then promptly had to leave the table and request a t-shirt from the manager so he could get the hot grease off his back. They comped his meal from the ticket, but OUCH. Oh, and seconds after that debacle my plate almost came out of her hand and the beans poured onto my left hand. Again, not entirely the waitress' fault. Had she been provided with more help, the entire affair would have gone more smoothly and she may not have dropped the fajita platter. Poor planning on the management's part. My roasted veggie fajitas did taste excellent... although I ducked far to the side when she was setting them in front of me. read more

Americanized Mexican food. You would think that outside of Duluth, Minnesota food like this would not still pass muster. This place's only saving grace is the happy hour margaritas and Taco Tuesday, but still, every time I've been here I've thought about how I would rather be somewhere else. Today I was helped by Juan and he gave awesome service! Not as attentive as I would have liked, but it was A taco Tuesday special going on, so i understood. Food was good too! Only issue I had, was when it came time to pay, the bill my cousin used was ripped and it became a huge hassle. The assistant manager, Tony? lied about his name and said I couldn't use the bill, even though it was intact, because a corner of the bill was missing. It became excuse after excuse. I understand that there are problems that happen with fraud and whatnot, but this was not the case. I do feel because I'm African American and wanted to pay with a ripped 100$ was the problem. Had not been to El Torito for a few years. Got a free entree offer in the mail and thought we would try another meal there. We stopped going due to poor service and inconsistent food quality. Arrived after five PM, restaurant had many empty tables, However we had to wait 10 minutes so they could clean one for us? Waited another 10 minutes for a server, waited another 10 minutes for chips and salsa, and beverages. The chips and salsa were very good, hot chips and salsa was excellent. Waited another 20 minutes for our food, fajitas, which we very very good. Wondered why lighting was very subdued in a family restaurant. We both had to visit the restroom before leaving. Men's room was scattered with paper on the floor and the stall was filthy, my wife said all three stalls in the ladies room were also filthy. She did tell the hostess about this before we left. I have been in the local area too long to not have known how good this place is. This is actually my second time here and I enjoyed it even more this time. First, they have Happy Hour from 3pm to close Monday - Friday if I'm not mistaken. Second, they honor the service-members by giving discounts on the food. I think its 15%! Third, they have their taco bar is amazing and they make the tortillas from scratch. You can actually watch them make them so you can understand why they are so delicious and fresh. For the vegans they have plenty of veggies to fill your tortilla/taco with and even potatoes if you choose. For the carnivores they have every choice of meat to fulfill what your heart desires. I used to come to this place and sit in both cantina and restaurant side and it's always been lack luster. The host in the front with curly hair is very aggressive and the host with the blonde hair is a bit more welcoming. I've gone on busy nights and I have never seen management walk around the restaurant to touch tables or help their employers. Management's expressions aren't inviting either. I came last Monday only recently and enjoyed having one young male server in the cantina who has a good personality and the older male bartender. He was very funny....I wouldn't recommend eating dinner here with family due to the employees and management. However their happy hour is good. read more

I order a burrito of carne asada and is was spicy. I don't eat spice at all, so I told the waitress to please do it without Serrano Chile. I wait over 30 minutes for the burrito and when I start eating the meat was most carne asada. I told the waitress and she told me that she replaced my plate ones and she was not going to replace it. The meat was not carne asada, it was shredded beef. The flavors was not the best and I just took a bite and left my plate. So it' Christmas day and there are very little if any options to go have some beers and watch the games. I really really didnt want to come here because every time ive come here ive been disappointed, well this location continues to let me down. At least they consistently suck. Lets see, it took 20 minutes to get my beer in the bar, 30 minutes to get my chips and order my food. Im still waiting so I figured id jump on here and complain. While waiting I noticed my chip basket has dried up old salsa all over it. Ill finish my only beer and get out before I get sick. Not a fan of this place, it's always cold inside, so bring a jacket and their food is mediocre at best. They still use a jigger at the bar, so expect never to taste any alcohol in a mixed drink, and at the prices they charge for their drinks, you'd expect them to be a little more liberal with the alcohol, but they are not. Any place that uses a jigger, is trying to get every penny out of that bottle. So when you order that margarita, expect to only taste the margarita mix, the tequila is diluted. Taco Tuesday's is a bad scene, the place is packed, you cannot get a seat, and the patrons are a little scary. There are many better Mexican restaurants in town, too bad both of them at the mall are on the lower end of the scale. read more

I recommend taking advantage of their Happy Hour specials in the Bar Area. My wife loves the Sopes and I love the Beef Taquitos. Plus the Mexican Caesar Salad is always phenomenal. Their chips and salsa are really great and very fresh. I hope you get Sabrina as your waitress, she is great. And cold beer with your Mexican food is never a bad thing. read more
