Stopped by this little gem while in Logan, Utah on a Saturday night. Good thing we made reservations, because this place was hoppin! Great online reviews were what brought us here. The food was typical Americanized Mexican, but it hit the spot! The chips and salsa were hot (and spicy. A little to spicy for my moderate palette, but the kind lady brought us a pitcher of water to cool us down.) The dinner plate was the size of an XL pizza pan! No kidding! And it was full of food. My spouse and I ordered the 3 choice combo platter. I ordered a chicken enchilada (full of chicken) and two tacos. The tacos were no more than what you'd get at Taco Bell. They were in my vernacular. ...."nothing memorable". Wished I had ordered three enchiladas. I think if they had thrown those cold flour tortillas on the flat top for a few minutes to heat them up and make them crispy, it would have made a world of difference. But they were warm from the hot dinner plate and a bit sad. I like beans more thsn rice, so I usually get all beans. The refried frejoles were delicious. They were super hot and smothered with melted cheese. Whats not to love about that? Went with a group of 20 for my boyfriends birthday. We basically all ordered enchiladas and the waitress was getting confused due to her lack of English. When all of our food came out they had forgot to make one plate, was of course the plate of the birthday boy. we expressed what had happened and they instantly blamed it on us and made one more plate. My husband sat there for over 20 minutes waiting for his food to be cooked. By the time he received it we were all done and they put it in a to go box for him. My husband, little girl and I went for lunch. We just moved to Logan from El Paso TX and were craving good Mexican food and decided to give it a shot with the hope of good food but not expecting great. What a surprise! The ambience was great with colorful decor and some music playing on the speakers that we recognized. The hostess was courteous and our waitress was friendly and attentive. We were a little wary of the Americanized menu but once our food came we were thrilled. The carnitas adobado was amazing and I could have the beans and rice for breakfast lunch and dinner. Since when does carnitas mean pork loin strips sautéed with bell peppers? Everything was bland, soupy, covered in gloppy cheese. Like Mexican restaurants in suburbia used to be in the 70's. If I want Mexican I'll go to one of the taquerias or grocerias or trucks. Great service and even better food!! Okay, so on our road trip we've come across several different types of towns and restaurants. Some towns and restaurants were standoff-ish and only wanted to serve locals, and some were very kind and welcoming. Kudos to Logan Utah and El Toro Viejo for being the latter! So the service was phenomenal, from the guy that seated us to our server. Our group tried chicken fajitas-- great seasoning and tender chicken, the chimi-- also great, and a combo plate with enchilada, taco and tamale-- loved the shredded meat instead of ground. This was a one of the cleanest Mexican restaurants I've been to. You don't notice the grease trails through the carpet which is very typical for Mexican restaurants. The food comes out very presentable. I would have gave it five stars but my carne asads was a bit tuff and chewier then it should be. Just enjoyed a wonderful lunch here at El Toro Viejo. They had fresh tasty food and large portions for a great lunch menu price. The service was prompt and wonderful. Surprisingly, this was better than Mexican food in California. The warm corn tortillas and freshly made veggies were wonderful. The restaurant itself is democrats beautifully with art, chairs and high quality furniture. The art was beautiful with three artists from several locations in Mexico. I always want to like this place, especially because the people that work there are so nice, but I always walk away unsatisfied by the food. This time I tried the Mole Burrito, hoping for a delicious meal, and the mole was good, it's just that they put so little on I could barely taste it. Bland and sad. Lots of food yes, but why be so stingy on what is the key element of the dish? My mother is a much less demanding diner, but even her taco salad was just a soupy mess of lettuce. We've been eating here for 9 years. Even before it was at the old location. It was somewhere we wanted to go to without a thought to eat on Lunch, Dinner or takeout. Someone's birthday was always celebrated here and we've grown to love and know all the waitresses and waiters. Ever since it moved locations, it doesn't taste the same. As it pains me to be even a little disloyal to one of our favorite restaurants, it seems like it's not the same food. I've tried almost everything on the menu and Carne Asada Tacos is my favorite, black beans and rice and Arroz Con Pollo is our regular order. The last time we went, it didn't wow us like before. The red salsa used to be sweet and have a punch is now too spicy even for me. We have been going to El Toro since it opened in 1996. Last Saturday we went for a family dinner. My daughter called in the morning and booked a reservation for 7 people at 7 pm. We arrived at the restaurant a little before 7 and checked in with the hostess. The hostesses were terrible. They never informed us what was going on. My daughter, son-in-law and I each talked to them at various times and they just didn't seem to care about our reservation. It took 53 minutes to be seated! A group of 9 that came in after us and did not have a reservation was seated before us. On a good note, the food was good and the wait staff was attentive. We were a little skeptical since were from Phoenix, AZ and used to eating great Mexican food. I have to say this food was amazing! Beyond amazing, actually. Tony was our waiter and gave us a lot of really good suggestions. We decided to split a pick three entrée. We got two enchiladas verde and one taco; all chicken. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and was so moist and tender. The green sauce is the best ever. Their red salsa was quite delicious but very different from what we are used to. Stopped in for lunch today. We should have gone someplace else. The waitress was not nice at all and did not come refill our drinks. The food which is usually good, smelled like feet and the flavors were bland. Shortly after leaving the signs of food poisoning showed up.
