We were greeted by an adorable little kid who I assume is the owner's son, which added a personal touch to the experience. The menu is fairly simple, but every item we tried was packed with flavor. I've eaten so much Mexican food in Chicago, and it's all great, but this burrito was fantastic and unique for several reasons. The beans were not refried; they were whole. The vegetables and chile were also fresh and didn't seem canned. One of the best parts was the rice they threw in which actually added some crunch to the middle of the burrito. It was 10am and I wasn't even that hungry but knew I wouldn't have time to eat later. It was so good; will definitely be back. What amazing food that had here! Quite possibly the best burritos I've tasted in the city which I know may seem blasphemous or crazy because we're talking about Chicago. My wife and I each had a burrito. I had the asada, she had the chicken. And we switched halfway through. The meat had so much flavor it was pretty insane. The service was quick and the staff was super friendly. It's an unassuming place from the outside but the inside had a really cool Mexican mural as well as awesome photographs. Today was the day to see what the hype was about. The hype is well deserved and then some. Now my experience would've been better had I eaten there as I did a to go order and just ate 3 tacos in the car. I ordered their Asada, Pastor and Pollo (plain - I'll explain later). My preferences are arranged in that order as I couldn't remember I had great cuts of Asada. That was some quality skirt steak and cut kinda thick!! El Tragón Taqueria has been on my radar for a while, but after I seen their tacos hit the top of Yelp's list I had to see what's up. The ambience is like a truck stop that was dropped in the middle of the city. There are a couple tables to eat at inside, and a few more than a couple on the inside. If there's room to eat, then the choice is yours: para aquí or para llevar? While I was riding a lil girl jumped in front of me to tell the cashier that her Roblox's was on some bs in Spanish. To me that took me back to going to work with my ma, also the female that handout the food corrected my Spanish and flexed on me like one of my thick eye brow primas would, so their service gets a bias bonus points for making me feel like they are family. I ordered a steak burrito, pastor taco, and asada taco. The burrito was worth the reputation and was very good. Surprisingly the frijoles were the stand out in the burrito, but the steak itself was thick cut, cut & cooked well, and was flavored nicely. All of the ingredients were fresh and delicious. Only complaint on the burrito is that I ordered extra meat and there still wasn't that much. The asada taco was made with steak more similar to US cut skirt steak CUT than arrachera CUT in that it is thicker and less fatty. The asada taco was slightly above average but doesn't really stand out as anything special, especially considering the serving size and price. The pastor taco was the star of the show; the pastor is the only reason I'll be back. The pastor is seasoned to perfection and crispy yet not cooked to shit. No pineapples in the pastor for better or worst, and no frills; rather, just pastor done very well. Overall, I can see why El Tragon Taqueria has been voted one of the best burritos and tacos in the city. I was not happy with the serving size of the tacos and the price of both the tacos (especially considering the size), and the burritos. If budget isn't a consideration, then I would recommend El Tragon. read more
