And you have no idea how much food you get for $32 for 6 ppl! He even ordered extra for us to take home! Heard that a lot of ppl go there all the way from San Juan and order a lot and put in the frige in the hotel. Will go back there next time in PR. read more

While on vacation in Rio Grande, and staying in a resort which over charges for everything, this restaurant was a wonderful find. It is located on a busy route with only outdoor seating, you walk up to the window and place your order. I had a half chicken with rice, my husband had a rack of ribs with plantains. We each had a beer. The total meal came to $15.00. PLEASE NOTE: They don't take credit cards. From then on, at the resort we kept comparing prices to what our El Verde BBQ meal cost and laughing. Everything we ordered was wonderful but the plantains were AWESOME. I wanted to go back and order just a plate of those. There is not any ambiance there to write about but the food is good and it was a great change from all hotel meals and restaurants we were overloading on. read more

What I would give to have something like El Verde in San Diego. We had lots of great meals in Puerto Rico and the one we had at this joint was definitely towards the top of the list. Our bellman recommended this place and we decided to swing by before our hike up the La Mina trail. You order your meat of choice by the pound, grab one of the outdoor tables, and go to town. The lechon, carne, and ribs were all finger licking good. It started to rain as we ate and that made the meal that much more memorable. Love this place. read more

This place was fantastic. A perfect stop for authentic Puerto Rican cuisine after a day at the beach. Plenty of outdoor seating, great music and best of all, super affordable. Spent $45 to feed 7 of us and that included drinks. We had plenty leftover, too. We went on a rainy day and the place was still pretty busy. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because of the stray dogs and cat that were roaming around the outdoor dining area. Although the animals left you alone, they're still roaming around the tables and it made me quite uncomfortable. I wish they did a better job keeping the strays away. After a day at Luquillo Beach the whole family was hungry. We had seen El Jefe online and everyone voted on burgers so off we went. Well we couldn't have been more pleased. Our waiter was great. So nice and fun. He suggested the ginger lime mojitos and after our first pitcher we had to ordered another it was so good. Everyone said it was the best mojito they had ever had. Then the appetizers come, fried onion wedges, nachos, and shrimp basket. All incredibly delicious. The nachos were not your run of the mill affair. It was a kind of cross between nachos and brushetta. It was really really tasty. The burgers are build your own affairs and everyone loved their burger. Very tasty and perfectly made. This place was recommended to us by one of the locals. It's a dingy-looking roadside BBQ joint, but look no further if you want delicious and authentic Puerto Rican food. The menu is completely in Spanish, but you can see exactly what they have through the window. GET THE BBQ RIBS. You order by the pound, but keep in mind that the bone itself weighs a lot. We ordered 2 pounds for 7 people and it wasn't remotely close to being enough. The meat is so tender and falls right off the bone. The BBQ chicken was just alright. The meat was fairly dry. The blood sausage has a peculiar taste that you may or may not like. If you're trying it for the first time, just order 1/4 or 1/2 a pound to try. Sweet potatoes and yucca were good. Their rice has peas and bits and pieces of sausage. My friends loved their piña coladas. Their 'grande' is pretty small, but still totally worth it. You'll be surprised how much food you'll get for your money. We spent $70 (including the drinks) for 7 people and we had enough leftovers to last us awhile. If you want to be served, you may have to get their attention because it can get busy. I hate to say it...but I thought this place was really overrated =/ The best thing about it was probably how cheap the food and beer is (especially compared to the limited other resort dining options in the area). Chicken was just okay flavor-wise but I will say it was very juicy. The pork was better but really fatty. The sides were probably the best part of our meal! The rice and beans had great flavor and I actually loved the yucca. It had some kind of garlic sauce which was super tasty. Service wasn't exactly friendly or helpful either. This is still a good option for quick, authentic Puerto Rican food in Rio Grande but for me, it just wasn't as good as I had read. Bummer =( read more

We order 1/2 chicken, 1/2 rack of ribs, 1/4lb of fried beef, small rice, fried plantain, one batata, a 7up and freshly squeezed pineapple juice for a whoppin' $24! Not only is this place so cheap but the food is great! Amazing flavor and well seasoned. This place is right off the highway on the way to El Yunque. Definitely wish I had discovered it sooner, it could have saved me some money and calories. Oh - and this is cash only. If you are staying at the Gran Melia, you absolutely have to come here. Forget paying an arm and a leg for lunch and dinner at the resort when you can pay EIGHT DOLLARS for an ENTIRE CHICKEN. If you are going to Rio Grande in the company of family, then you absolutely must come here. Save yourself the $30+ per person and share an entire chicken. He also sells sides of tostones (one palntain/four large tostones). This place is right on the road, and no, it's not the BBQ food you get in Texas or in Kansas City. Barbecue in Puerto Rico refers more to deep fried options and large portions of meat. Of course, you will need to at least know how to order in Spanish in order to be able to get food here. The menu is in English and Spanish, so they understand if you order in English, but the food is legit/authentic, so the employees speak Spanish almost exclusively. Skip the kioskos in Luquillo and come straight here. It's an outdoor establishment-- there is no indoor seating. There will be dogs and cats begging you for food if you choose to sit down at this open air (slightly covered) establishment. By far the best BBQ I've had in forever. My mom and I got a 1/2 lb of ribs and roasted pork. We were fighting over the roasted pork it was that good. The blood sausage was also very good. This one was one of the first restaurants I tried during my stay in Puerto Rico. The restaurant is conveniently located off the Hwy and offers parking. My wife and I were staying just up the road at the Rainforest Inn, where we had to scavenge for our own food. This aspect of our honeymoon kept the trip cheap, and we actually enjoyed getting out of the rainforest to find little gems such as El Verde. In fact, it was the first restaurant after leaving Jurassic Park. For a mere $16, perhaps the cost of one of our cocktails at the nicer hotels at which we stayed, we stuffed our faces on the following: half a rotisserie chicken, pork ribs, mofongo, beans and rice. Oh, and a coconut. Admittedly, the chicken had some dry portions (white meat, mind you), the mofongo was oilier than expected, and the beans and rice... were beans and rice. But, any place that chops up pork ribs with a machete gets my vote. Takeaway points: accessible, cheap, and filling. read more

Right off the road on our way to Fajardo. So convenient, affordable and tasty--great value. We got a whole chicken for $8, plantains, fried sweet potato, fried pork (carnitas) for the two of us. We ate it for lunch and then for dinner again by the pool. The skin on the chicken is tasty. The carnitas is more like big fried chucks of meat. My other fav place to dine at when in Puerto Rico, the mound of BBQ chicken piled high is the indication you're in for a treat, moist and delicious. The rice with gandules is the bomb and I have never found a place that serves more delicious maduros, they are soft and sweet always, the batata is really good also. They have so many other Puerto Rican delicacies to list. My hubby and I have a family home over there and every trip we visit here at least 2 or 3 times. You know it's the real deal by the amount of cars pulling in and out constantly full of locals stopping by for dinner. PS - just as an FYI, don't plan on using the restroom here, it's pretty nasty, stop at Burger King or one of the other fast food places instead. read more

Worst service. The place was dirty. The employees and manager were very rude and hostile with all the customers. I asked for something to clean the tables and the manager told me that due to covid they dont have anything to clean the tables. They were charging 10 cents per napkin. No paper in the only bathroom that was working. When I asked the manager she said someone stole it and she won't put another one. Worst experience ever. Wont never visit this place agian. read more
