Was passing by this road side bbq and noticed that it had enough locals on the line to be more than credible. I had the half roasted chicken, mofongo and platanos. The total was 9 dollars plus or minus some dimes. Thats a half chicken, a full sized mofongo and 2 plantains for a reasonable price. I could not finish and had to box it up. I have to say the chicken was soft and still juicy on the inside with great crispy skin maybe due to sitting under the heating lamp but that was somehow a benefit and not a detriment. You could say the light helped my chicken get to its final form. The mofongo had a distinct garlic sauce poured on it but otherwise was nothing to write home about. I had been dissapointed so far in the mofongo at the roadside bbqs. I expect it to be more distinguished, the plantain tastey or sweet or at least the savory part to be enjoyable but unfortunately for me this is where el verde bbq fumbled a bit. Great place for an informal meal! The service took awhile but it was a great chance to practice Spanish and eat some authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. We had a whole chicken, yuca, mofongo, arroz, fried plantains, and fried pork. All was delicious and we were impressed by the reasonable price - $24 for four of us to eat. El Verde BBQ was a dream come true. We had been out for hours, in the rain, visiting El Yunque in Puerto Rico. I was starving and asked if we could stop there before we went back to our cottage. My partner acquiesced, changed course and all exhaustion was left behind. El Verde does a huge business with loads of take-out. We chose to eat in a booth outside. We ordered a half-chicken, a plantain, and some yuca (tastes like sweet-potato). I had a dark beer. The chicken was juicy and very flavorful. The Yucca was a pleasant surprise, not dry at all with a lovely flavor. The plantain was yummy. We even have leftovers! I can't believe how many meals I have eaten here with plastic ware. This is such a great restaurant to go to. We stumbled upon it on our way to El Yunque rainforest and haven't looked back since. It's a meat lovers dream land! I have had food from El Verde two times. The first time, I ordered morcilla and longaniza sausages to bring to a party. The sausages were a hit. Everyone loved them. The second time, I went and ordered pork ribs, rice, and yuca. The yuca is creamy and full of flavor. The rice was also so good. The ribs, however, were a complete disappointment. They were tough and lacking in flavor. I really did enjoy my piña colada, though. It was not too sweet with a perfect balance of pineapple, coconut and rum. The prices are really good. If I return, I would try something other than the ribs. read more

This is where you go to get good Puerto Rican BBQf or cheap. Came across from a local friend while I was staying in El Yunque and loved it. They serve lots of great pork (of course) roast chicken, plantains, mofongo, and a host of yummy other puerto rican sides. Two of use indulged a bit spending $20, which also included a couple of blended Gasolina's (the spiked sangria like drink you must have if you are in PR). it's also a nice place to go hang out and meet locals, who are generally very warm, friendly, and fun. read more

WOW !!! Had one of the best meals ever while in PR at El Verde. This is a road-side stand on Hwy 3. They have a few picnic tables to sit at but don't count on a nice or quiet decor here. The food, it's all about the food. If you're a meat lover this is the place. Amazing BBQ chicken, pork, sausages and ribs. They also had the best rice & beans and mofongo (I wasn't a fan of the other ones I tried) I ate while in PR. The best part was that we ordered enough food to feed 6 to 7 hungry people and it only came out to 22$. An entire roasted chicken is less than 6$. We went on a Friday night and the place was packed and the food plentiful. Locals had recommended that we go to this place at the end of the week or weekends. If you want to get totally immersed in the local culture and don't want the tourist trap feeling of the kiosks, this in the place. read more

I don't normally go for these Food Network/hyped-up places, except this was on the way back to the airport, easy access within spitting distance of the toll road entrance. We got rock star parking right in the front too, so it was just meant to be. I got a half pound of ribs, my wife got 1/4 chicken. We both got arroz con gandules (arroz blanco did not seem to be an option) and one amarillo each. We had actually had this style of chicken the previous day for lunch from a place in Ceiba that was a truck behind a chain-link fence just off the roadside, and that chicken was much better and cheaper. I know things get pricier as you get toward the city, and they could probably get more money for this stuff, especially with all the tourists coming in (there were a couple of grounds when we were there). Personally, I'm not a fan of this style of barbecued chicken. I like the Mexican style al carbon better, but that may be just what I'm more used to. This is greasier and had less flavor, but the chicken is a little more tender. The ribs were also pretty greasy. Tasty and tender, but very greasy. It may, again, just be what I grew up on, but it's hard me to do ribs without any rub or sauce. Maybe I just don't like the taste of meat that much. But with the grease of the meat, the oil of the rice, and the oil of the amarillos, it was a lot. On the plus side, the amarillos were particularly sweet here compared to others we had while on the island, but still not the best I've had overall. I think this place has a lot of appeal to tourists. It's mostly a non-tourist client base, and is open-air so it has that more "local" feel that a lot of people seem to want. It's fairly clean compared to other places, and a lot of the staff speak English well enough. Based on my other experiences with this style of food though, I would not call this the "end all of barbecue" or any such thing. Probably worth checking out though. read more

Spectacular ribs! We went to Puerto Rico for a week and visited El Verde three times! This is more of a local place than for tourists and I had to brush off my Spanish to order, but that added to the fun. You can order meats by the pound - our favorite were costillas (pork ribs). BBQ ribs but seemingly just salted and maybe some other mild spices, no sauce - but all pure goodness. Add rice or some amarillas (plantains) and we couldn't find a more enjoyable meal during our trip even though we had many other good ones. A must try if you're in the area of El Yunque. read more

This spot is a decent choice for anyone staying in the area. They have reasonably priced selections. It gets crowded and you will need to be fighting for attention at 2 counter spaces. After I managed to finally get my order in, I must say I was very impressed with the roasted chicken. I am mexican and am used to bit more spice so I was unimpressed with much of the cuisine. However, I will say that the rice here and pretty much everywhere in Puerto Rico is fantastic. I really loved it! It also paired really well with the french fries that we ordered. Everything is fried so if you're looking for American style BBQ you will be greased out. Boyfriend ordered chicken, pork, and the ribs. Meat was falling off the bone which was great - but overall this place was just meh in terms of the fried meat because it was too greasy and lacked flavor/seasoning. This was great, authentic Puerto Rican food for our vacation! And really inexpensive. The entire menu is in Spanish, so it took us a little while to figure out how to order. We wound up just asking what they recommended and going with that. For the 2 of us, we split a roast chicken, with a large side of rice and a plantain each. Came to a total of $14, and was enough food for 2 meals! We were coming from the Gran Melia Resort, so it was close, and a great deal. The roast chicken was amazing. Wonderfully flavorful and hot. The rice was great. It was an interesting flavor - a little smoky, as another reviewer mentioned, and cooked with pigeon peas in it. The plantains were to die for - so good! We ate at one of the patio tables to the side of the diner. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a cheap, authentic Puerto Rican meal - but be sure to bring cash! read more

I hate to rate a bbq joint based on what I know about Texas Barbecue, but I must admit, if you are looking for what I consider a true BARBECUE establishment, this is not what I would consider what most of the mainlanders would recognize. Please consider this rating based on what a Texan recognizes as barbecue. If you are looking for Fall Off The Bone pork ribs, look elsewhere. While they have a nice seasoning, they are far from Fall off the Bone. Sauce is not always necessary, but if flavor is lacking, perhaps sauce is indeed needed. Seasoning is present, but not fulfilling to the meat. There is no smoke in the flavoring as well, which is points against as well. Very disappointing. Chicken may be purchased as 1/2 whole, and as such, it contained what I would consider a very pleasant piece of poultry. What I had was cooked very well, and remained moist and well seasoned. This was probably the best item I had, and regret nothing about it. If I owned a restaurant, I would be proud to serve this chicken without hesitation. The Rice and Beans were fine, but nothing exceptional. A bit dry for my taste, but maybe I'm just fussy. This is all I had at El Verde, so if others could share their experience, they may enlighten my experience. I must expand on the fact that this was probably the most inexpensive meal I had in Puerto Rico, which speaks volumes to the value you get here. These folks work very hard for your dollar, and should be respected for that. They respected all their customers equally, and for that I am very impressed. God Bless this business. read more

Nothing was fall off the bone like other Yelpers have declared... BBQ Ribs - decent, but i think my aunt from Brooklyn makes meaner ribs. Roasted Chicken - i've had juicier/fall off the bone rotisserie chicken from my local supermarket Mofongo - the vampires in Australia were able to smell the amount of garlic put onto this dish. i couldn't even taste the mofongo. Sweet yams - probably my favorite dish here. Quite good and I was pleasantly surprised Papas Fritas aka Fries - crunchy, standard. Atmosphere: 0/5 I felt utterly uncomfortable eating here. I knew this place a hole in a wall, and I was prepared for that, even excited. But what I did not know: - There are stray dogs following you around with puppy eyes. The amount of guilt I felt eating in front of them made me just want to hurry through my meal. - Apparently El Verde is the launch site for teenage boys showing off their angst on ATV's, I was not able to have a conversation without repeating "WHAT???" 3x. I ordered a small rice, and got about 3 cups of rice with beans--it took over the whole plate. Tostones were good, but very heavy. Pina coladas were only $3.50 and weren't bad, so that's something.
