P.S. In June 2023 I hired D B Genesis to reinstall the hardwood floors and some of the steps. They…read moredid a neat and professional job. There were no gaps between the boards evident. Subsequently I filed a claim with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission against its Guaranty Fund. The fund was set up to compensate homeowners who hire licensed contractors who either fail to complete a job or do it in an "unworkmanlike" manner. After a very long drawn out process, the MHIC opined that the multitude of gaps "were not significant enough to render the installation unworkmanlike." Prefinished hardwood flooring is an interlocking tongue-and-groove system and it is certainly not good workmanship to install the boards with clearly visible separations. This contractor left more than 50 open joints between the boards, significant gaps between boards and stair rails and installed steps with stair noses that were not level and that creaked shortly after installation. This was certainly an unworkmanlike installation. (I guess that tells you what a license from the MHIC is worth.) What matters, however, is not my opinion or the MHIC's but whether you would be pleased if this contractor did such fine work in your home. This contractor has cost me time, money and a lot of aggravation with his threats of legal action, lies and refusal to accept responsibility. He continues to lie about conditions in my home alleging that I do not operate my HVAC leading to wildly fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels, causing the multitude of gaps. Don't be fooled. He is just lying to shift blame for the shoddy work of his subcontractor to me, the homeowner. BTW he's also lying about offering to replace the flooring at cost. P.P.S. As I have stated before the "official unbiased inspection report" Eric is referring to falsely stated there were no separations visible in the floor either from a stand up position or under 10x magnification and thus, concludes there were no installation problems. So I guess those are all imaginary gaps Eric's subcontractor filled in with wood putty. The MHIC a scam?? I would not put it that way but certainly they did not have much sympathy for me as a homeowner harmed by a licensed contractor. They seemed much more concerned about protecting the Guaranty fund from claims, even legitimate ones. Sometimes the system does not deliver justice. In any case, a license from the MHIC is clearly not a guarantee against shoddy workmanship.

Khan from 111 Carpets did call back, said he would be glad to accommodate me (it saves hauling it to the dump), told me where to pick it up (jobsite), and helped me load it into my car. The carpet is not fancy but it met my needs, and the price couldn't be better: free! Of course, my house interior needs better carpet than that and when I need it I will call Khan again. He treated me well.

We figured out what carpet we wanted, and then started shopping around for the lowest price. We tried Costco's contractor. We tried Empire. We tried Luna. We tried Lowe's. We tried Home Depot. And then we tried 111Carpets. BINGO!!! Here are the benefits: *They are primarily a shop-at-home service, but they do have a showroom open by appointment. Which means, you can shop however YOU prefer. (We opted for the in-home, similar to Empire or Luna.) *There is absolutely NO pressure to sign a contract on the spot (unlike with Empire or Luna). * They listen to the customer. The gentleman who came to our home was incredibly knowledgeable, listened to what we wanted, and didn't try to persuade us that we wanted anything other than what we told him we wanted. *NO SUBCONTRACTORS. *No crazy waits while your carpet gets ordered like with Lowes or Home Depot, or many of the other smaller shops. *Added benefit of having a local company to call in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong. Having local service is SO important. 111Carpet also has an A+ from the BBB. *They were able to beat the lowest price we had gotten. If I EVER need flooring ever again, regardless of how big or small, I will only make one phone call. To 111Carpets.

He was very knowledgeable and creative, working with me to make logical transitions from new to existing work. He promptly gave me a great price and stayed involved as the work proceeded. Donal and his refinishing crew were very professional and efficient, carefully covering all the adjacent furniture and door opening to control what little dust that was created. Their sanding and sealing work was flawless and completely finished, and cleaned up in two days. As an architect and RE developer, I have had thousands of SF of hardwood flooring installed , repaired and refinished. Unfortunately, the flooring was not initially installed according to the manufacturer's installation guidelines, resulting in issues that required multiple return visits to correct. While problems can occur on any project, our disappointment stemmed less from the installation issues themselves and more from how our concerns were handled when we brought them forward. As customers making a significant investment in our home, we expected our concerns to be taken seriously and addressed professionally. Instead, we encountered a level of defensiveness that made an already frustrating situation more difficult than it needed to be. To the company's credit, Friends & Family Flooring ultimately corrected the flooring issues and addressed damage that occurred to our dining room table during the project. We appreciate that they stood behind their work and made things right in the end. However, the process of getting there was far more challenging than it should have been. Quality workmanship is important, but so is customer service when problems arise. While the final outcome was acceptable, the overall experience left us disappointed and unable to recommend the company based on how concerns were handled after the installation.

Thank you for your response. I'd like to clarify several key points for accuracy…read more First, there were not "multiple service visits." Metro Flooring came out only twice--once for the original installation in 2021, and once in 2025 for warranty repair due to plank separation. Second, your response actually confirms an important issue. As you stated, this flooring can be installed either as a floating floor OR as a glue-down system--but not both at the same time. However, during the 2025 repair, your installer glued down planks in an area of what is otherwise a floating floor system. This directly contradicts proper installation standards and prevents the floor from expanding and contracting as designed. After Metro Flooring refused to return and inspect the issue, I had a contractor come out to evaluate the floor. During that visit, the contractor identified that planks in the repaired area had been glued down. I then retained a certified floor inspector, who confirmed in a formal report that mixing installation methods (glue-down within a floating system) is improper and can cause the exact failure that occurred. Additionally, Metro Flooring declined to return to inspect the issue, which required me to incur additional expense to obtain both a contractor evaluation and an independent inspection. This situation is not the result of improper maintenance or misuse, but rather the result of an improper repair that altered how the flooring system functions. I am simply seeking a fair resolution for a floor that failed following warranty work.
