based on my comments for my last massage, ben, the manager at elements, called to offer me a satisfaction guarantee session b/c he wanted me to be completely satisfied with my massage. i had no idea what this meant, so i called elements and was informed that a satisfaction guarantee session is a complimentary session offered to a client to ensure that they are completely satisfied the second time around. i called in the morning and was able to get a session that same day, only a few hours later. my session would be with raymond, whom i'm told specialises in deep tissue massage. upon arrival, raymond greeted me, took me to the private room, and i told him what was going on with my body and what i needed for our session. as a long distance runner, my legs are typically very tight and i need a lot of deep work done on these muscles. he began our session with about 10 minutes of stretching (clothed) for the quads, hamstrings, calves, and hips. these were stretches that included reciprocal inhibition, where he is providing resistance against my movements, which ultimately results in my muscles becoming stronger. after the stretching, he left the room, i undressed, and got under the covers. when he came back, he began his deep tissue therapy, and let me tell you, RAYMOND BEAT ME BLACK AND BLUE! OMG, every stroke, push, squeeze to the muscles hurt like crazy! but i know that there was a method to his madness b/c i had something like this many, many years ago (but not quite as intense). i actually yelped a couple of times since the pressure was so great, but i knew that what he was doing was good for my muscles as he was pushing all of the tension, lactic acid, and toxins out of my body. when the session was completed, i definitely felt sore in every place that he touched, but i also felt a sense of release. i did some gentle walking around later that day, to get some movement and fluidity back into my body, esp the legs, and i slept really well that night. the next morning, i woke up feeling like a brand new person. there was still just a little bit of soreness, but in general, my legs felt great and i felt like i was ready to run my next race. Truong beat me pretty damn hard during my time here! It was my first deep tissue massage and I was definitely not prepared. Granted it was awesome and I felt much better after, I couldn't get over the fact that it hurt like a bitch (lol). I know I probably should've said something at one point but in my defense, I thought I was able to take it and the deeper the massage is, the looser my muscles will be, right? Next time, I'll definitely know to speak up. And truong was great. He was super nice and didn't try to initiate conversation during my massage. read more

Elements provides a very helpful therapeutic massage. This is not a frou-frou spa. No soft robes. No green tea in a ceramic cup. No free steam room before your treatment. But know what? That's just fine, if you're looking for a treatment that will help fix your knots and tension, rather than the frou-frou experience. The environment *is* relaxing and clean... which are two qualities that are DEFINITELY important to me in a massage environment. It has a darker feel -- lots of tans and browns, "leather look" chairs, etc. The therapists are very talented. Do know that the massage is *therapeutic* and the pressure offered during your service will generally be on the stronger side (yes, you can ask them to adjust the pressure!). Elements seems especially attuned to the physical ailments of us "desk jockeys" and therefore, their sessions seem tailored to addressing those problems. The therapists are also quite wise re: physiology and will explain why you're having particular problems in particular parts of your body. Some have also sent me home with recommended stretches. And it's really convenient to schedule an appointment. You can always call, but you can also use their website to book your appointment. This is very helpful if you want to discover all your options! NB they may call you & ask if you can adjust your appointment by a few minutes, in order to accommodate breaks for the therapist/increase the amount of time between appointments. I do wish the turnover in therapists wasn't quite so frequent. Seems that as soon as I get used to a particular therapist, he or she moves on! Like any form of "therapy," it really does help to see someone consistently -- they get to know your needs and perform their work based on that developed knowledge and understanding. However... I've always received a good massage, so the people they have on staff ARE reliably talented. All in all I'd definitely recommend Elements. Convenient and helpful! read more

I heard this place was opening after receiving a flyer in the mail. 55-minute massages booked by October 31st (and used by the end of November) are only $39! (Just remember to tip based on the non-discounted price!) I booked a massage with Kyle, who is their sports/deep-tissue massage specialist. For 55 minutes, he dedicated himself to loosening all the muscles on my back side. Oh, it hurts so good! I might check out the handiwork of a few more therapists, but I'm happy I have a good massage option close to home. read more

I found out about Elements Massage from a yelp elite event I RSVP'd for but unfortunately, there were no massage time slots left. However, one of the massage therapists, Ben, had emailed me back and was kind enough to offer me a complimentary session to try them out. Now, I'm someone who has suffered with moderate-severe chronic back pain nearly my whole life and wasn't diagnosed until my early 20's to have scoliosis of the spine, degenerate disks and arthritis in my lower back. Thus far I had only seen chiropractors and acupuncturists, which never really seemed to relieve any of the muscle pain, dull aches and shooting pain I was experiencing day to day. I also suffer from headaches due to neck and shoulder pain. Up until about a month ago, I would only be able to afford a yearly massage at one of those spa's, however, they did not target the areas I needed nor were they trained on the anatomy of the spine/back. Naturally, I was skeptical and didn't know if this could really help me manage my pain better but upon the initial meeting with Ben, he listened very patiently while I was telling him about my history with chronic pain and what I had been diagnosed with. Although, I ususally feel more comfortable seeing a female massage therapist, Ben did a wondeful job of making me feel as comfortable as possible and was professional each time. He would explain what each pressure point wss tied to and how your mind is connected to your body and can affect/trigger different nerves which then can cause pain. He stopped and adjusted pressure as needed and also had quite a good sense of humor about any moments when I was feeling embarrassed about something or a question popped into my head. After the complimentary session, I was told about the monthly wellness plans they had which helped reduce the cost of the massages if you needed to go more frequently. I ended up signing up for it and have since gone 4 times, with the last being yesterday. Although, I still have pain and obviously, its going to be a work in progress to get my pain to a manageable level after two decades of pain, however, Ben, has done a fine job at loosening up certain muscles that were extremely tense and I do feel relief right after. I highly recommend Ben and Elements Massage. They really try to make you feel welcome and I really appreciate the flexible hours they offer so that my hubby no longer has to worry about taking off from work early just to get me to my appointment on time, since they have them as late as 8pm. My office for our company is in downtown San Mateo and we are so lucky to have Elements Masseuse Vicky come in and give us massages. I am avid exerciser - work out just about every day and I consistently have issues with my back, hips, and lower back. Everytime I have gotten massages, I never feel like the pressure is hard enough or that I feel relieved during the massage. Vicky is amazing in all the times she has massaged me. He definitely helps customize what your needs are per session. I like the combination of a massage plus stretching, since I don't make enough time otherwise to stretch like I should. I've been to a number of places and I can't seem to find one that makes me feel comfortable enough to go consistently. Then Elements suddenly opened in San Mateo downtown, which is quite convenient by the way. I booked an appointment on the second day of their opening and my assigned therapist was absolutely masterful with her techniques and had excellent strength. She was very attentive, nice, and very professional. What I like is that this place is not a spa where they charge more for amenities like jacuzzi, steam room, relaxation room, etc. I don't need that and don't want to pay extra for it. So Elements fits the bill. I've to Massage Envy before. Though that place is similar, Massage Envy just gave me a cheesy vibe for some reason. I just signed up for a monthly plan, finally! read more

I've gone for 2 massages at Elements and will keep coming back indefinitely. I work in tech and am on the computer all the time, and I try to stretch and strength train, but it never seems like enough, as I end up getting arm, back, shoulder + neck pain regularly. I've seen Lauren for both massages and both times I was amazed at how she finds the weird tiny shoulder spots that need fixing. I also think she's a cool person and enjoy talking with her. Elements is awesome. I believe it's about $68 for a 55 minute massage, that's quite a value for the upper class area and for a top notch massage. I normally get massages about 3 times a year, normally for 30 minute sessions and my masseuse, I believe her name was "Ariele" was great. She asked me which sections I needed work on (neck and upper back), she told me when I was not relaxing, and she did a great job of removing my various knots. The front desk staff was very friendly as well, providing water bottles and a comfortable area to relax. Also, the rooms are all very clean, with the bathrooms providing mini towels, which is a nice luxury. The rooms could use a bit more extra touches, such as a fountain or some 'zen' items, but other than that, absolute 5 stars. I had a wonderful visit to Elements. I was greeted by friendly staff at the front desk. I was given a form to complete which really put me in. Questions are asked of clients regarding two injuries, comfort level about certain parts of the body to be touched or not, as well as stress levels and other specific requests. My one hour massage was provided by an incredible certified massage therapist, Ryan. He Took time to make sure my questions were answered, and that he had a clear understanding of my hopes for my massage. Ryan was incredibly professional. I felt comfortable the entire time, and I don't think I have been that relaxed in years! when my massage concluded, with cold water and recommendations for a future visit. I've been returning consistently for the past 2 months to work through scar tissue and old injuries that were preventing full range of motion. i used to go Massage Heights but they closed down- totally bummed because i loved their staff especially Ryan. i found elements massaged on YELP and signed up with their wellness program to try them out. I've been w/ them for a couple of months and was not happy w/ their services. They were rough and felt like they rushed their massages. they also use Massage Lotion, i prefer OIL. anyway- i decided to cancel the program and they informed me about having a satisfaction guarantee and offered a massage at no charge before i decide to completely cancel the program. They booked me with Ryan. I was thinking maybe it was Ryan that i used to see at Massage heights.. but what are the odds of that happening. I went to my appt and i checked in. i waited a few minutes and Ryan came out to greet me and WHAT DO YAH KNOW! IT IS THE SAME RYAN FROM MASSAGE HEIGHTS! how FREAKIN awesome is that!? so with that said. i obviously did NOT cancel my wellness program thanks to Ryan now being there. he also informed me that we have a CHOICE of oil or lotion. i was NOT informed about that. so thank goodness he asked (as they should). Massage before Elements Massage was inconsistent, ineffective and did not really address the customer's 'pain' points effectively - and am glad I made the switch to Elements. I signed up for the Wellness program 3 months back, and am a regular now. Their customer service is impeccable, and everyone at the reception is so warm, and considerate. Overall the ambience at the place is calm and soothing. Christina is a rockstar, and she's the most effective and calming masseuse I have ever been to. She's precise as a surgeon, and immediately find the knots and stressed points - and works her magic. She's calming, thoughtful (checking for pressure throughout the massage) and definitely knows her stuff. The ambience and the music at Elements reminds me of the calming effect of the monasteries in Nepal, except here - along with the mind, my body is also at peace! After the Yelp Elite event a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try out an actual massage here. I scheduled an 80-minute appointment since my back was pretty tense and opted for a deep tissue massage. Daisy took care of me for this one. She was pretty awesome for the most part, she was able to adjust the pressure when it get too tough around my back and shoulder area. Unfortunately though, I'd like to think that my back is still a bit stiff as I don't think the 80-minute session was enough. To be fair, it's been a while since I've had a massage. In general, I didn't opt for the monthly plan since I don't have that kind of money to justify $70 a month for a massage. I tend to go in every other month which would probably help things better down the line. I'd probably go for Daisy again if she's available. And hopefully my back won't be as dumb as before. read more

I just had the best massage ever from Anthony! He was super knowledgeable and experienced. My legs and hips have always been tight and he really worked these areas thoroughly. He listened to my needs and did a fabulous job loosening my muscles and tendons. He knew exactly what my body needed and even included some stretching too. I have been a member at Elements Massage for over a year. Each month I am charged for a 90 minute massage. These massages roll over to the next month if you don't use them which is convenient if scheduling becomes an issue. Their website is easy to use and their staff is very helpful. I have seen four or five different massage therapists in the past year and they have all been excellent. However, I must say that after my first session with Anthony, I knew I had found my match. I like a lot of pressure and Anthony can provide that without it ever being too much. He is a great communicator and just has a kind and positive presence. I highly recommend him. read more

I've been here twice. Once for a prenatal and second just a regular massage. The prenatal was ok. It helped my lower back pain. But this second time was painful. I didn't have any problems, just wanted a relaxing massage. I said medium pressure but it felt extra hard. I did say that I wanted all my knots out but I didn't think it needed to be that hard to get it out. This massage was not at all relaxing. Now I'm actually in pain when I wasn't when I came in. I can't move my neck right now! I don't think I'll be back for what I pay. read more

I look forward to coming back the receptionists are very nice too their regular rates do seem a bit steep you have to sign up for their Wellness Program to get reasonable rates, but the program is actually very reasonable since the purchased massages roll over and only 30 days notice is required to cancel AND you can share with a friend/family member. for someone with tight/painful muscles, it's like a gym membership - you know you're better off if you go regularly, and paying that monthly fee gives you more incentive to go since you're already paying for it. plus, it's more enjoyable! read more

I got a birthday gift card and finally decided to cash it in. The staff here are chill and really friendly. It's easy enough to do a walk in but if you want someone in particular you might have to wait. If you don't mind being a little chatty during your massage get Ray! He asks for feedback to make sure you're not uncomfortable and warns you when he's gonna go HAM on whatever really needs work. He found the crazy tight knots on my traps that no one else ever worked on. For the first time all year I can roll my shoulders without feeling my muscles protest. The customer service is always impeccable; the bathroom is simply joyous (especially when you compare it to the always out-of-service Starbucks bathroom across the street!); the environment is overall quite soothing. They listen to feedback too! I complained about the music, and one of the staff members (Ben! :D) took the time to call me and let me know they'd make some changes to it. They are always just incredibly thoughtful and polite and overall just lovely. Now, to the crux of the matter: the massage. Christina is a goddess. If I could afford it, I would go even more often than once a month. I have been coming here for more than a year. I have seen both Tommy and Ryan. They are wonderful. I usually get the deep tissue massage because I am active and this style helps release lactic acid build up, relaxes over used muscles and helps me relax overall. Tommy also does salt stone massages which are wonderful. Ryan adds in gentle stretching that helps with flexibility. I am a member and go a few times a month. I booked my 2nd massage here. First time I came to check it out was over 2 years ago. I've been a member with massage envy but for the most part, my massages have been 'less than great'. I finally decided it was time to check out something new. Elements did not disappoint. The service was impeccable. Both staff and therapists were awesome. Price point is fair and the establishment is clean. I decided that the service warranted signing up for the membership. 69 bucks for a 1 hour massage that's actually good is worth it to me! My only gripe is that downtown SM can be tough for parking but that's about it. Of course this has nothing to do with the establishment itself but lack of parking is always annoying. The Point: Daniel is the best. Book with him. Reasoning: I am a massage therapist and have had hundreds of massages, and, until now, I hadn't found anyone I really loved. I couldn't find a massage therapist whose style I liked and every massage I got made me feel more tense than when I came in. Daniel changed that. That was the best massage I've ever gotten and I can't believe, as a female, I was so comfortable with a male therapist. That has NEVER happened before. He was professional, attentive and thoughtful. He really listened to exactly what I needed and did an AMAZING job. I have felt so stressed all week and it all just melted away with his work. I'm more relaxed and my pain is gone. He hit all the right spots and adjusted pressure to my needs. He is the absolute best and you must book with him. Warning: There is a language barrier. He listened to my needs, targeted specific areas that needed more attention, very thorough, and also the pressure level was just right. I felt very rejuvenated and relaxed afterwards. This review is for Ryan, who is amazing! He is the perfect masseuse for me, with a good medium to firm pressure and works out the tension and knots without putting me in "pressure point pain". The best thing is that he knows how to stretch your legs and arms, all while ensuring the sheets and towels have you covered. This is awesome for anyone who sits at the desk all day, to marathon runners who just need to really stretch those tight leg muscles. Not everyone knows how to do this!
