Not bad, but not especially good either. We were looking for a cheapish dinner in the area after having one too many drinks at a Yelp-related event (Grey Goose = delicious), and E&C fit the bill. I'm a fan of cozy Irish/Scottish/British pubs, and while this is sort of like Disney World (re: forced, faked), it still somewhat delivered on atmosphere (or at least was relatively casual and relaxed). Had the fish and chips (cod) and they were decent. Again, nothing special about them, but they weren't bad either, a normal sized portion I ate readily. The boy had the lamb curry and had enough to spare for the next day. He thought it was OK, a little too sweet and not hot enough for him (although that does tend to be the way non-Indian curry is across the pond, something I'm personally OK with). We got the apple and berry crisp to split for dessert, which we both enjoyed (hot and tasty with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream on top) and was probably our favorite part of the meal. Service, again, not bad but not good. Beer selection is OK. Overall, middle of the road, not worth going out of your way to but not terrible. Really a 3.5 star place, but I'm being nice. I was visiting Boston from out of town. An old college friend and I had planned to get together and he picked this place (it's across the street from his office). Food was good, but I wouldn't call it authentic Brit pub food. Service was good too. But the prices are high for what you get. If I visit Boston again and he wants to eat here again I won't complain, but if I get to pick where we eat it won't be here. Somehow this place has turned into the Thursday night hot spot for me and my co-workers. Seems that way for a lot of people. Must be the sweet potato fries. They are AMAZING. We usually get the sharing plates and some spinach dip. I recommend the Brie and cranberry toast, fries, pretzels and beer from the tap. Thursdays are crowded, but we've never waited more than 15 minutes for a table, even when we have a group of 7 or more. Last night we had a great waiter. We even got the giant brownie as desert. Delicious! And big enough for five people to share. Not the kind of place I would go for privacy or to try to have a conversation. I've been frequenting the EandC for some time for trivia. There are good things about the EandC and there are not so good things. First the positive. The staff is pretty great, especially the bartenders. I never want for a beverage which is saying something given the size of the bar. The location is convenient for after work shenanigans (if you work downtown like me) and the front windows open to the street on nice days. Not quite outdoor seating but will do in a pinch. The food is hit or miss. Safety Items include: -The potstickers - small app portion but tasty -The fish and chips - actually pretty good! -Chicken pot pie - it's served with green beans and mashed potatoes. Personally I find the mashies to be overkill so I opt out of those, but the pot pie is quite good and the beans are fresh and cooked crisp. -Chicken bites - small portion but pretty yummy -The Turkey club - healthy option and quite good -Burgers are good and the sweet potato fries are delish! Stay away from - The veggie stirfry and veggie curry. Bleh it was like mush with very little veggies and lots of onions. The french dip - meat is pretty stringy and fatty. Not good, The artichoke dip - to creamy. not enough chunks of artichoke. Rich and heavy just for the sake of being rich and heavy. Not worth the 5,000 calories per bite. The Tuesday night trivia rocks. It's a decent place to catch a game. I also see a lot of tourists in there with the kids in tow in the dining room area. This place is so corporate, it's not even funny. I wish they would lighten up and awesomeify. Been 2x now, and both were kind of weird experiences. Breakfast was very hotel-appropriate, and fine. Late night drinks saw trivia night (but I couldn't really tell if anyone was playing!) and complete lack of service sitting in the bar area. There were employees walking around but never really helping customers -- so it turned out you had to walk up to the bar to get your own food & drinks. I should mention - the french onion soup didn't really have a rich flavor; it was more like onions were boiled in hot water. This restaurant was attached to our hotel, so it couldn't have been more convenient. The service was meh, especially considering they weren't busy at the time. But run, don't walk, to try the limited time brussel sprouts special. Two of us ordered them, and we were both raving about them. Good for happy hour or lunch if you are in the area and do not want to go anywhere associated with Quincy Market. Happy hour features very large appetizers and live music when I was there. The down-side is that it can be very loud and the staff can be very disinterested in anything but getting the order in. Our waitress did not even hover long enough to care or hear that I wanted something other than fries. More vexing was a surcharge for hot peppers -- a surcharge I was fairly sure was there because I had the nerve to ask for something from the waitress. Nothing like feeling like a pain for saying something other than "it's fine" when she wandered past us and as an afterthought asked how are meal was. I've only been to Elephant & Castle on Tuesday nights for trivia (6:30pm start). Very convenient location, at least for my trivia friends. Very quick walk from Orange, Green, Red or Blue lines and tons of parking free right out front if you get there after 6pm. First, I strongly recommend reservations if you plan to play trivia. If you are not in the area right near the host, you will not be able to hear the questions. Regarding trivia, the questions tend to be on the more challenging side and there are A LOT of sports questions. Prizes seem to be good (Celtics tickets, Elephant & Castle gift certificates). Both my group and the host have suspected that some teams use iPhones or the like. Just be aware. Drinks are a bit pricey, but it IS the Financial District I suppose. I guess I prefer not having to drink Cosmos made with Absolute or "higher-shelf." Smirnoff is just fine thankyouverymuch. I have been consistently thrilled by the menu. I'm not sure why this is always a surprise, but I have yet to be disappointed by anything I have tried. My favorites have been the Fish & Chips and Sweet Potato Fries (with YUMMY dipping sauce). Although I do not know any details, there seem to be some excellent private spaces on the basement level. read more

I'd never been to an Elephant and Castle even though I've lived in alot of cities with them. Lunch was ok. They have some different types of sandwiches which sound good. The first half of my sandwich was better than the second half, it had cooled considerably so it wasn't really that great. Maybe a burger would have been a better choice. The salad was clearly made hours before the lunch rush and there were no veggies in it. It was basically lettuce and balsamic, and I had two tomatoes- whoo hoo. If someone want to go to here, I wouldn't protest but there are plenty of other places to give $15 for lunch to that are better in this neighborhood. It would not be my idea to go again. The interior was nice so it would be a great place to get a drink.. if someone invited me, i"m not suggesting it. read more

I'm never blown away by Elephant & Castle, but find myself coming back for after work drinks fairly often nonetheless. Good for some basic sandwiches, maybe a fish n chip, maybe an app or two - best for beer. Liquor measured out like you're at the 99 = not a fan. The atmosphere is pretty nice and roomy though. Different levels of seating and an old fashioned bar so depending on where you sit it's a different feel. The bathrooms are downstairs which is annoying going up and down every 15 minutes when you break the seal. There's also what looks like a large function hall down there and I'm not sure how much it's being used. read more

Poor Service. Great Food. My friends/co-workers come her pretty frequently since we work a stones throw from the front door. We really enjoy the food, so the kitchen gets props for putting out delicious eats. However, the wait staff is terrible. Our first visit here we were forgotten after receiving our food/drinks, and had to get up to find someone to pay our bill. Today it took at least an hour to get our food, and then another half hour to get the check. One of my co-workers ordered a Bacon Blue Cheese burger, when it came without bacon, he asked the waitress if there should be bacon on it and she said no. read more

Disappointing quality. Work got takeout for lunch from this place. I really like Jameson's whiskey, so I tried their Jameson's chicken. The chicken came w/ a mushroom sauce, mashed potatoes, and green beans. The chunks of chicken were burned on the outside, incredibly dry, and I guess they were hoping to hide it by dousing the sauce on top of it. The sauce itself was ok but not all that flavorful. Mashed potatoes were ok. The best part of the meal was the green beans-- they were blanched or steamed w/ no seasoning, but had a good crisp texture. Sad that the best part was someone just cooking veggies for the right amount of time. Bottom line, I would be pissed if I had to shell out the $15 or whatever out of my own pocket for what was basically a cafeteria meal. I wasn't all that psyched when I was told we were going into the Financial District for a bachelor party, but this place surely made the grade for a great night out. We went on a Saturday night and stayed the whole night here. Food- Everyone enjoyed what they had. I sampled two of the poutines (they have differing options)one with sweet potatoes and one with chicken in a tomato sauce. The ale onion soup needed more seasoning, but the fish tacos and Bailey's cheesecake were great. Prices- They were on par with other places, but I thought the poutines were cheap. Tacos and dessert were reasonably priced. Service- This is why I can't give more stars. Our bachelor party group was about 8 people and we were all eating, drinking and enjoying the karaoke. The bartender most times we went up was complaining. About the music, the drunks doing karaoke, not wanting to be there. It got old very quickly and had we not been there for our own amusement I would have said something to her, but let it go. Some of our party also had to wait nearly ten minutes after the first entrees came out to get there food. Atmosphere- It's bright, absolutely enormous inside and plenty of room with a lot of high tops. The karaoke DJ deserves props for keeping us entertained. I don't frequent the Financial District much, but I'd come back here for a second try were I around. read more

Ate here while staying at the hotel above, Club Quarters. We ended our night here for a late drink and supper. It's a nice old school English type bar with a great menu for breakfast lunch and dinner. Service was friendly and prompt. It's a nice after work bar as well with decent prices. They do trivia and have parties/events going on as well. Cajun Chicken Caesar wrap was delicious as was the flat bread and chicken tenders. If your staying above in the hotel or near-by check out their menu and you will not be disappointed. Great spot off the beat and path in the Financial Area. read more

I've been here several times and it really is quite impressive just how this place gets worse and worse. Case in point, today. After waiting for approximately 5 minutes by the entrance, the bartender asked me to choose a seat and a server would be right with me. Thumbs up there, but thumbs down for the fact that two employees had been sitting right there rolling silverware the entire time. My wait for anything resembling service continued for another five minutes with no wait staff to be found. Eventually someone came out and bumble fucked themselves through my order, bringing me out what appeared to be burnt pretzels. These were wholly unremarkable. Then came the check, which was someone else's. Now, I understand things can be hectic at a restaurant and these things can happen. However, there were only 4 tables. Outside of the ridiculously horrible (read: fantastic) karaoke this place has to offer on the weekend, it really doesn't offer anything other than repetitively poor service and bad food. read more

The restaurant was dirty. There was no bartender and a manager sitting who finally got up and came over and said I don't know where my bartender is. The drinks were overpriced. We had to ask for refills of drinks and straws. The poutine was mediocre not fresh at all clearly frozen French fries. The Caesar salad was absolutely terrible. We left and came back for a drink later on an hour before closing. There were some people with full beers and not an employee in sight. Finally someone came up with a coat on and said they closed early. Such a disappointment. I would never go there again or the hotel connected which was also horrible and dirty. The place is what it is, an after work spot to hang out with coworkers or a business lunch. Unfortunately due to its proximity to my place of employment, I end up here way to often. It is not the type of place were you are going to meet a Tasty Snacks so BYOB. The food is bland take on English Pub grub. They have the standards across the board. The soup is poorly put together and they would be better off importing soup from their sister company the Piccadilly Pub. The beer is over priced ($6 for a bud light) and the bar closes early. The bar area spills into the restaurant portion and you end up standing on top of each other. The service is quick and they get you out of lunch in a speedy manner back to work. On the flip side, don't expect to always get what you order. To many times I have ended up with the wrong items. If they organized the bar area better and had better prices, it would defiantly be a cool place to hang out. Since the company is really only looking for the corporate after work crowd, take your crew somewhere else. read more

Stopped in hear for food and drink after just missing my bus and suddenly having some time to kill. I was a little disappointed with the overall experience. After sitting at the bar for a few minutes (in all fairness I was just to the left of the beam in the middle of the bar), I was finally greeted by a bartender who was serviceable but hardly charismatic. I ordered the French Dip Sandwich and a pint of Harp. It would appear prices have gone up here a bit, the sandwich was $11.50 and the pint was $6.30. I guess their Financial District location kinda justifies this. There were a few choices for the side with the sandwich, I opted for the healthier mixed greens. This turned out to be the wrong choice, the mixed greens literally seemed like bagged salad from Stop & Shop that was a few days past peak. Just not what you'd expect here. The sandwich itself was decent, but nothing outstanding. After all was said and done, $22.00 (with tip) for a beer and sandwich. I don't know, just didn't quite leave there feeling like everything was 'Bang On!' as their slogan indicates. The bar itself is nice and the place has decent atmosphere; Trivia Night was just wrapping up when I got there, which people seem to be into. There was a time when this was a common destination for myself and a large group of friends. Frequently as a feeding stop after drinking our fill at Harpoon brewery events, one of its chief advantages was its ability to seat twelve or more on a Saturday night. Having gone back there again more recently, i am having a hard time remembering other virtues. The obvious jokes about English food are tempting, but on a recent trip to England, i actually had a great deal of quite tasty food in pubs, served with a much more authentic surliness, too. In this case, though, the steak pie i had wasn't bad, save for the fact that it was mostly empty on the inside. The mashed potatoes had a skin on the outside and were cold (prompting me to realize that they've always been that way). The server confused Fuller's porter with London Pride (the latter is not a favorite, but is much better on tap). Maybe i just wasn't drunk enough, but with suburban attrition taking its toll on my usual crew, perhaps the upside is better choices to eat. read more

The Elephant and Castle is a "British" pub by way of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a country smart enough--or maybe lazy enough--to wait a hundred years after our war for independence before embarking on its bloodless but not entirely complete extrication from Britain's grasp. I'm not ashamed to admit that I probably would have been a Loyalist had I been a British American in 1776 but I was not alive then and today I am quite pleased that my historical forebears committed their treasonous acts against Mother England. Yet, two hundred-odd years after 1776 and a hundred plus years after 1867, some of us still feel nostalgic for--well, I'm not quite sure what. I thought a trip to the Elephant & Castle's website would explain why Americans and Canadians were so fascinated by all things British but the best I could find is this quote: "Today, E&C has grown to over 20 restaurants across the United States and Canada from Toronto, Boston, and Chicago to Vancouver, San Diego, and San Francisco. This record of 30 years of stability and success is due to E&C's continued commitment to be the standard of what North American consumers demand of a British pub and restaurant concept - Bang On Food, Bang On Drinks, and Bang On Service!" I have to tell you, I didn't know any North American consumers--especially the Mexicans (they're part of North America, too)--demanded a "British pub and restaurant concept." Is this a case of the supply creating the demand? All I know is that after the movies last Friday, my friend and I decided on the Elephant & Castle for dinner because it was a short walk from the theater and close to our respective T stations. Who knew we were doing anything so corporate as demanding a British pub and restaurant concept? I thought we were just having dinner. The Elephant & Castle isn't a bad place. The dining room is large, the lighting is low and the overall feel is more like a bar than a restaurant. It's definitely a step up from TGIFriday's and the late Bennigan's. The entrees are hit or miss. I like the chicken pie and the Guinness stew when it's on the menu. Friday night's lamb curry, however, was a disappointment: the rice was undercooked, the lamb was tough and the curry was bland. I don't recall ever having a bad dessert: The bread pudding is great and so is the Bailey's cheesecake. Putting aside the "concept," if you happen to be downtown one evening and you want some adequate pub food, there are many worse places than the Elephant and Castle but please make sure that "bang on" never appears anywhere in your vocabulary. read more

I went out with five of my guy friends last night for dinner and drinks and we wound up at Elephant & Castle, mainly because everywhere else was completely packed and we were starving. Heading into a pub at 8:30 on a Saturday night and it being a ghost town really didn't set my expectations too high. Elephant & Castle, unfortunately, met my expectations. They have a pretty good beer selection featuring English and local beers. Beer prices were standard to above average ($6 or more per draft). For dinner, I ordered the Bleu and Bacon burger, which is quite simply a burger with bleu cheese and bacon. I was a little disappointing when mine came out however, for such a simple/silly reason. Everyone else had two strips of bacon and two pickles on their burgers...mine came with one. I didn't think it was a huge deal to bring up to our server (and definitely didn't want to make her retreat to the kitchen for a single strip), but I just found it odd and saddening that I had such little bacon. The burger itself was decent. It got me full and it was cooked properly. The flavor wasn't eye popping, but it got the job done. The fries were very tasty and uniformly cooked. The service was good, fairly prompt and definitely friendly. We got our beers and our food quick and painlessly. I just have to say there is nothing too special about this place. It's in a fantastic location and should be packed from 6:30 to close on the weekends, but people didn't start piling in until later in the night. Maybe there's hope for Elephant & Castle yet, but I will probably only come back if my first 5 choices are too crowded again. read more

There was very few people when i came to eat here at 8:00 am one morning. The waiters were attentive and professional. The food was excellent, and came out in a timely fashion. I had breakfast. Anything on the breakfast menu here is actually pretty good. As for the "british concept pub", I had absolutely no idea what that was, and still don't. But I'd like to see the market research that claims there's a demand for it. The breakfast alone could have gotten 5 stars, but this is not strictly a breakfast place. I'm on the fence regarding my star rating on this one. Honestly, I'm hovering between a 2 and a 3. Maybe a 2 1/2? I'm just not sure how I feel, as I used to like Elephant & Castle well enough. Here's the deal - when we lived in Boston we ate here a few times, and it was decent enough. I mean, obviously it wasn't terrible, since we did visit on repeat occasions, but equally obviously it wasn't terribly memorable, as I can't tell you what we had other than I do remember ordering fish and chips. So clearly the food isn't outstandingly amazing. On our most recent trip back, we didn't eat at Elephant & Castle, but it was right next door to our hotel so we ended up finishing our night here a couple of times. The drinks were fine, but the service SUCKS. Sucks to the point of the bartender ignoring us until her manager served us, and then she came over and apologized, saying she hadn't seen us come in. Except that she did see us, as she greeted us when we entered the bar. Umm...ok. And forget about getting her attention for a refill. Good lord. If it had been busy, I'd understand, but it wasn't. Also, ordering anything more difficult than a whiskey and diet coke is off the table, as they don't seem to know how to make anything other than the most very basic drinks. Granted, service was alright-ish the other 2 nights we were in, but again, it wasn't anything special or particularly attentive/friendly and we probably wouldn't have been back except for the fact that we were within steps of our hotel and wanted a nightcap. We'd go back again in similar circumstances, but otherwise, there are too many other cool bars and restaurants to visit, so I'll be spending my time elsewhere. read more

I also emailed the manager to explain what happened and share my unhappiness with being left without a table for 8 people mid-week in the Financial District and never heard back. Not cool, Elephant & Castle. On the other hand, when I have been able to eat here, it's been.. okay. Service is inefficient and the food could use some better seasonings and/or better descriptions on the menu. The best part is that the drinks are strong, but at $8 a pop for a Captain and diet, I'd expect that regardless. read more

The panko-crusted kobe beef hot dog wrapped in naan was AMAZING the first time I visited E&C, so much so that I raved about it to just about everyone I know. The service was...decent, sub-par I guess. But we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a huge issue. The second time I visited I brought 2 friends to whom I had previously raved about the dog. 1 took me up on the suggestion and I re-ordered it myself. Sadly, it was very disappointing. Dreams = crushed. The service was also pretty crappy. We waited a while for everything and our waters were never refilled although we were eating relatively spicy food. I'd give the first visit a 3.5/4, and the second a 2, hence the 3-star rating. I'm not ready to rule this place out completely, so I'll give it another try sometime. We'll see... read more

This place is located in the downtown financial district of boston so the prices of things are going to be a little higher than a regular boston bar. The drinks are about 5-6 bucks for a pint of beer and the food ranges about 9-13 dollars. So nothing this before hand the place isn't bad. It does get packed around 5-7 because people getting out of work will head over but during the late nights this place isn't as packed for most people just move on. It isn't my cup of tea but will grab a drink in there every once in a while. I'm cheap with my money so I tend to stay away. read more

We get served, beer cost 7$, we're like; where the heck is the good ol' 5$ a beer? then...ohhh REAL PINT! Again staff was kind, we didn't eat so we couldn't really judge about it. Seemed a bit regular nothing exceptional. Overall a nice place to be in between of a good area. I Guess that really sucked. The area seems a bit dead. I went to Elephant and Castle two times during the World Cup games and boy was it packed! However miraculously I managed to walk there from work and back, eat lunch, watch 1/2 the game and do all that within 1 hour. It's about a 5 min walk from my work and we figured with all the screens it would be a great place to watch the game. Well it was, however there are still a few parts of the bar where they need a tv, I had to twist my neck in order to watch the game one day because we were sitting at a table and the screen I was facing was all the one on the other side of the place. So I had to look up at the one behind me. However there menu is great. I usually stay away from bar food since most hardly have any vegan options. But I was able to get a veggie burger one day and brochetta (they held the cheese) another day. Both were totally satisfactory. They also had 2 other vegan options I didn't even have a chance to try! I wasn't able to get a drink since I had to head back to work but I hope to go there another time after work so I can experience their drink menu. Even though service wasn't great (what can you expect when the place is so packed it's probably violated every fire code), I was still happy to get served at all. And it's very impressive they could sit, serve, and feed me all within an hour during their most busiest time of the year. read more

Decent pub in the financial district. I like the more laid-back feel and the regular pub-food menu. They have a good selection of beer, mostly UK and Irish if I recall correctly. It overall feels a bit like a sports bar without quite so much memorabilia on the walls. Definitely has the corporate/chain feel to it... though still retains more of a "bar" character than a "family restaurant" character. Put it this way. If this were in Providence, I would probably never go here over my favorite bars and restaurants. But for a night out after work, I would probably push for Elephant & Castle over some of the fancier places around. read more

This is one of my go-to spots for a sit-down workday lunch in DTX. It's predictably decent pub style food. It has all those yummy Irish pub favorites, like bangers 'n mash, shepherd's pie, and stuffed yorkshire pudding, and I also hear the burgers are good. Bonus: I can vouch that they fries are excellent, and if you're trying to be healthy, you can choose salad instead of fries to go with your meal. It's pretty bad for vegetarians, so beware: Since I quit meat, the only thing on the menu I can have is the veggie burger, or I can dismantle another dish (I can take the ham out of the grilled cheese, the meat out of a salad, etc.). This place happens to be attached to one of the hotels I stay at many times every month (Club Quarters). One should never think that a place that is classified as a pub is going to have a plethora of healthful breakfast options. Well, we can dream. It's not terrible, but I'd much rather go down to a Cosi or sometimes even Dunkin. Good service. Free wi-fi for those of us who need to work through the breakfast hour (no, they don't serve beer this early--dammit). It is hoppin at night, though. Interesting crowd. Two quick things: first, the one charge left my account after a few days, which was very good :) Second, this is a decent place to grab some grub before you go out for the evening and down into the State Street area. It's a little on the expensive side, but considering its relative closeness to the party bars down the street, it does have some decent food options. The plates are a decent deal, giving you a chance to get a variety of stuff that the entire group can share easily. I'd still keep it at 3 stars. It's good, but not undeniably remarkable to make me want to regularly seek it out. But it's not a bad place if you're looking to get food before a night out in Fanueil. read more
