Almost all the chicken was very burnt on one side. I love burnt food (lol) but this was a thick layer of burn that was bitter and not very chewy. Fries were lacking in seasoning as we got the seasoned fries. It was a very light dusting of cheese and other spices. I also got mild food poisoning after eating lunch here. Not directly saying it was this restaurant, but I hadn't had any other food since dinner the night before and no food after this meal. ‍

I had been to the Peruvian restaurant that was housed in this location several times, and as Med food is one of my favorite cuisines, I was very interested in checking Elia out. Yesterday, I got my chance! The interior has been massively upgraded from the former tenant. It is clean and airy! They have a few tables and a counter where you can order. The counter has a small bakery case with tempting treats, and they also make smoothies there. We were greeted and chatted with the guy about his recommendations. We went with the lamb gyro (Larry) and the veggie wrap (moi). While waiting for the food, I checked out the assortment of products for sale. They have Greek coffees and teas, infused olive oils, floral waters and jams and jellies. Really interesting items; I had to look up "bergamot" on my phone (it's a type of orange - I love it when I learn something new!). The food was ready fairly quickly and we devoured it! I was especially impressed with my wrap. The wrap construction was absolutely perfect! Given that Pythagoras was both Greek and a contributor to geometry, the wrap superiority made me feel like I was eating authentically Greek! Seriously, the wrap stayed together until I had consumed it in its entirety. I can't stand it when the wrap falls apart and deposits its contents on my already stained and dirty clothing. As we were paying (two enormous sandwiches plus tax and tip = $23), we asked the guy behind the counter about the set up. When it was the Peruvian restaurant, there was a teeny kitchen and most of the space was set up for dining. Now, the kitchen takes up about 2/3 of the space. He mentioned that they did a brisk business in both catering and meal service. Good to know if you want a steady flow of healthful Greek meals delivered to your door! In addition to the small lot behind the restaurant, there is ample street parking for $3 / hour on 36th Street. In all, Elia ticked all of the boxes for me - a pleasant setting with great, reasonably priced food; fast, friendly service and available parking! A+

Today, I ordered a variety of food to be shared at my office via Uber Eats! All I can say is WOW! They got it spot on, I ordered the Spinach Pie, Cheese Pie, Meat Pie & Chicken Pie, requested they be cut and half to share and my wish was their command! Asked if they could consolidate the containers and yet again my request was honored. Then ordered the specials BOGO on Uber Eats, Zucchini Fritters and Sausage and Peppers, one was even better than the next. Finally, the Spicy Feta Spread, just the right amount of spice and homemade!!! Came in less than an hour. What quality food, what attention to detail. I'll definitely be back to try the other menu items soon! So glad they're close enough for delivery to my office. Great Greek food!!!

    Cheese (not Shrimp) Saganaki

I had great expectations for my most recent visit, 05/08/21. So great that I didn't do the one thing one should ALWAYS do: CHECK THE ORDER! I'm a born-and-raised local and it pains me that standards have slipped so low, at so many venues. At Elia's, it was a case of a lack of active listening and, possibly, assumption. Cheese saganaki is just one of those dishes I wouldn't order for home or take out. I don't have a gas stove, nor a flame grill and the dish is too easily congealed by the time you get home. But CHEESE saganaki was what I received when I ordered SHRIMP saganaki (I'm pretty sure if the employee recalls our interaction, I didn't request cheese). With both items on the menu, I could expect my selection to be confirmed by the person taking my order just as much as the person taking my order "expected" me to check the order and receipt. Most upsetting is I was really looking forward to this dish, as SHRIMP saganaki one of the few Greek/Mediterranean dishes I haven't tried (and I already have a favorite Cheese Saganaki dish at Meraki). So, there I was, returned from errands that took me to SoBe, Downtown and Morningside before I checked my purchases and saw the inevitable error. Inevitable, it seems lately, because errors with client orders happen far more frequently than many local restaurants/cafes like to admit. Even more disappointing: I was the only customer for the entire time I was inside this cafe and it was quiet with no (I thought) distractions. And, of course, to compound the situation, Elia's is closed on Sunday. So here I am with a potentially wasted slab of cheese, wondering, "How am I going to reheat this?"

After dropping a girlfriend off at the airport, I was looking around to have some healthy food before hitting up the spa. I have tried the places a cross the street but never noticed Elia. I parked in the street, plenty of (you supposed to - paying) spots. I walked in and was welcomed. I looked around at what they offered and only noticed the menu on a printed paper at the counter. There is no display of their food menu. In crayon there is a beverage menu but I had to assume it is for their smoothies by the names, no details given anywhere on what is exactly in the smoothies. I ordered the Elia signature wrap with grilled chicken, arugula, tomatoes and their signature feta spread. It looked beautiful in the tomato wrap. Super healthy! And a large amount of chicken in it that is perfectly seasoned. On the side there was also a delicious citrus light dressing that matched perfectly with the wrap. The only thing I missed was a water station. There was none and as soon as I had my food everyone disappeared in the kitchen. I assume they don't offer water so you would buy one of the waters, teas or sodas?.... There is one table of four and then also two high top tables that provide condiments and napkins. The food was ready fast and delicious. A Greek radio station was playing American eighties hits while I was devouring my wrap.

The beautiful outdoor setting creates such a unique and relaxing atmosphere that you almost forget you're still in the city. The food was outstanding. The grilled meatballs were flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the cheese saganaki was absolutely delicious. But the real star of the meal was the beef souvlaki--it was incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. And I have to mention the fries that came with it. They were honestly some of the best fries I've ever had, and definitely not something I expected to be raving about at a Greek restaurant! This was an amazing dining experience from start to finish, and I can't wait to come back and explore more of the menu.

For appetizers, we ordered the Ali Nazik and Eggplant Carpaccio. The Ali Nazik was phenomenal. We were given a side of bread, which paired really well with the dish. The lamb was packed with flavor, and the smoked eggplant yogurt was fire. The two complemented each other perfectly. The Eggplant Carpaccio was good as well. I will say, though, that if you aren't a fan of dishes with a heavy vinegar flavor, this may not be for you. I'd also be curious to see how this dish would taste served warm. For our entree, we ordered the Beef Souvlaki, which came with six skewers of filet mignon. The beef was perfectly cooked and very tender, so no complaints there. However, the rest of the dish didn't really stand out to me. The fries were decent, but nothing crazy. As a first-time visitor, I also feel like this probably wasn't the best dish to order if you want to get a full sense of what the restaurant has to offer. One of my biggest disappointments was that the restaurant primarily had outdoor seating. Maybe it was just the night we went, but it was extremely hot and humid, and the fans in our area weren't cutting it. It was also very dark, making it difficult to see the menus and even our food. I think better lighting, especially toward the front of the restaurant, would make a big difference. The food came out very quickly, which we appreciated. I do wish our server had been a little more helpful, though. We wanted to learn more about the menu and were hoping for some guidance and recommendations, but he didn't really guide us through the menu the way I had hoped. Overall, Mandolin was a solid experience, and the Ali Nazik in particular was a standout. I'd be interested in coming back and trying some of their other dishes to get a better feel for what the restaurant does best.

We repeatedly had to go out of our way to flag someone down just to order drinks or check on our food, while noticing that nearby tables were consistently attended to without issue. It genuinely felt like we were being overlooked, which made the entire experience frustrating and uncomfortable. What made matters worse is that gratuity was automatically included, so we were forced to tip for service that simply did not meet even basic expectations. We were whisked inside to the intimate, dimly lit interior with a DJ table tastefully tucked away in the back of the space. Service was welcoming but overall, not quite as warm and attentive as I've experienced at other places in town. We started off with the Turkish Manti Dumplings, which were the standout of the night. The complexity yet restraint of flavor, balancing indescribable buttery, roasted, earthy notes with a touch of umami and subtle tanginess from the yogurt. The Mezze Sampler was a nice option for trying three of the dips. All very tasty, but I've had slightly better elsewhere. The Sweet Jeweled rice was the other standout with flavor and textural variety that made each bite pop. I found the Roasted Brussels Sprouts undercooked and lacking the same level of flavor as the other plates. The weakest dish of the evening. The Grilled Whole Bronzino got top marks from the meat eaters at the table. Overall, 4/5 stars for a delicious meal but with tough competition around town limiting my ability to hit that 5.
