The moment we walked in, we were transported right back to Greece. The décor is beautiful and authentic without feeling forced. Every detail adds to the charm of the space. We decided to keep things light and ordered the zucchini chips along with a special appetizer featuring whipped feta, roasted eggplant, arugula, and pistachios. Both dishes were excellent. The whipped feta dish was bright, fresh, and packed with flavor, while the zucchini chips were perfectly cooked they were light, crisp, and addictive. My daughter ordered the non-alcoholic dragon fruit "martini" and absolutely loved it. It was tropical, refreshing, and felt like a special treat. I went with the white sangria. It tasted a little more watered down than I expected, but it was still refreshing and enjoyable on a warm Miami afternoon. The service was excellent throughout our visit, and the atmosphere alone makes this place worth a stop. Absolutely delicious and wonderful experience. Definitely on the pricier side but found the portioning and flavors to be very fair with the pricing of the items. Seating is mostly outdoors and beautifully decorated, definitely a nice selection for an intimate event. Service was wonderful! The spanakopita was nicely flaky, the spinach filling wasn't overly bitter or pungent (my boyfriend is not a fan of strong feta flavors and enjoyed this while I am a feta enthusiast, we felt that this was right in the middle of our demands which worked great). We both love moussaka which is what my boyfriend ended up getting, dare we say it was our favorite moussaka out of any Greek restaurant in America thus far (coming from New Yorkers frequently visiting Astoria). It was broiled to perfection to give the cheese/béchamel layer a light crunch at the top and maintaining that richness underneath. The eggplant and ground meat were well seasoned. I really enjoyed my stuffed peppers as well (rice pilaf, ground beef, and feta on top), the tomato broth/sauce gave a nice sweet and savory flavor with the meal. The setup is cute think trees and twinkly bistro lights, but don't be fooled, it's basically an outdoor restaurant. In Miami. Plan accordingly unless you enjoy dining in 85° with a side of humidity. Parking? Practically a scavenger hunt. There's no real on-site option; we ended up trekking about six blocks to a public garage. Apparently there's valet somewhere nearby, but you'd never know it because there were no signs, no heads up, just vibes. They tout a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which set expectations and maybe a little too high. Unfortunately, the food just didn't deliver. Several dishes landed squarely in the "looks better than it tastes" category--pretty, but surprisingly flavorless. At those prices, you expect at least a little wow. Before the food you are welcomed by an incredible array of plants and wooden tables that takes you out of the business of Miami into a much more fun picturesque dream. The outdoor space is absolutely marvelous and I love how much greenery there was around the restaurant. We went for our anniversary celebration and it was all we could have hoped for! The food was exquisite. The best being the wood oven roasted beech mushrooms which I could easily eat every day. The dumplings were also amazing and I loved the side bread the give you to sip up the sauce. Needless to say this was an amazing experience. I've seen so many people recommend this spot, so had to add it to our itinerary when I planned a trip back to Miami! First off, the outside is so cute and perfect spot for pictures! I also love that it's near the main part of the Design District, so you can easily shop around and then come to dinner afterwards. Me and my friend ordered the Wood-Oven Roasted Oyster Mushrooms for the appetizer to split and got the famous Whole Mediterranean Sea Bass for our entree. I never really order mushrooms as an appetizer, but I loved them! The dip was the perfect accompaniment as well. The fish was cooked great and very flaky. I also loved that they debone the fish for you! I'd say I wish the fish had a little more flavor, but that'd be the only comment. Service here was great! I mean Mandolin has been one of my favorite spots in the city for years now. From my college celebration dinner, to my first date with my fiancé to all the lovely celebrations in between and after it just always guarantees me a 5 star experience. But just when I thought it couldn't get any better, our server Christopher made our experience simply exceptional. We were a table of 6, including a baby and he just made us feel so comfortable, was super accommodating and even gave us a few goodies to try like the Waho crudo (Chef Alejandro's new addition to the menu which was simply phenomenal!). We were celebrating something very special and our table was chaotic, loud, and fun, adding 5 star service to that equation simply made our night so much more memorable. As for the food, the best part of course -- we got the lobster orzo, mezze platter, mante dumplings, chicken skewers, kofta, baked feta, crudos, vino, and a few sides for the table. I went to this restaurant with my friends in September during vacation and I can confidently say I think about this restaurant often. We ordered around 5-6 plates to share and almost everything we got tasted excellent. The flavors were bold, earthy, and everything came fresh. My favorite was the flatbread With the figs on top (I think it was a seasonal item) and the mantl dumplings. It started to rain heavily towards the end of our lunch so we decided to stay a little bit longer to keep us out of the rain. The staff ended up giving us a dessert for free! A taste of the Mediterranean in Miami. Everything we had was delicious. We ordered the Turkish sampler which included hummus, smoked eggplant dip, and a tomato/walnut "salsa" with a healthy serving of crudités. We were delighted by how many veggies were on the platter: Romain lettuce, cucumber, endive, radish, purple and orange carrots, and tomato. Such a delicious afternoon snack. We also tried the Ali Nazik: ground lamb atop an eggplant yogurt dip. Light and savory. Both dishes came with bread which came in handy to sop up the tomato relish and the yogurt from the Ali Nazik. My only regret is that we came for an afternoon snack not lunch or dinner to try a more substantial meal. Note: the seating is interesting. We were first seated right next to the patio entrance which was under a tree with many birds. After a near collision of bird droppings on our belongings, we asked for another table. (okay, I'll throw you another bone - ask to sit in the main dining area, not inside or on the side patio) The wife and I have been here on both of our trips to Miami this year. Mandolin was the first restaurant several people have mentioned over the years as a recommendation, so we were going to make that happen, even if it is a hike from Miami Beach. We had such a scrumptious lunch the first time, we knew we would be back. The setting is all outdoors, save for a handful of inside tables. A mix of basic tarps, scattered plants, and trees that were preserved within the confines of the space all create an ambience of calm and healthy eating (which may or may not be the case). This being our second visit, we went back to the well on a couple of items and tried two new ones. Speaking of wells (a loose segue), we decided to order a pitcher of white sangria. It was very refreshing, and despite our best efforts, we didn't get to the bottom (of the well...drink...segue over). You know when you crave a particular dish at a restaurant so much that it's the reason you want to go back? Not the atmosphere, not the service, not the broad cuisine, but THAT dish. Not every restaurant has that, but for me Mandolin's Ali Nazik is THAT dish. It's a warm preparation of ground lamb on top of smoked eggplant yogurt. You can eat it straight or spread it on pita. I guarantee if you're dining here because you like Mediterranean cuisine, this is the dish to get. Nearly everything at Mandolin is sent out as shareable.The tuna crudo was amazing - it was more like marinated tuna sashimi, and the capers flavored it up a touch. I also really liked the baked feta with cherry tomatoes (a repeat order), which came out sizzling. The Greek Village salad was competent. Last time, we ordered the zucchini chips (they were fine) and spicy lobster orzo (tasty, but a large and heavy dish). Prices are reasonable, service is efficient, and again, it's a nice outdoor setting. I am told that the scene at night is an even cooler vibe. Got here about 7pm on a week day as a walk in and was told there was going to be a 45 min wait but ended up being less time. My favorite dish were the sirloin meat balls. So tender and the sauce was great too. The village salad was good. The stuffed tomato and peppers came out kind of cold. Wouldn't order that again. The fries were ok. Overall it was just ok. I always love the food here. Everything is so simple and delicious. The surface is great, the ambience depends on if you were sitting inside or outside I've done both. I prefer sitting outside because you really are out in nature and get to experience the chirping, birds and feel the light breeze on your skin under the shade of the trees. Located close to the heart of the design district, Mandolin provides a pleasantly causal escape from the glamour of the area. The white and blue theme throughout and a pleasant patio are both reminiscent of a chill spot on a Greek island. Yet, you are in the center of Miami. Where things get confusing with Mandolin is the line between casual dining and prices that would normally correlate with a fine dining establishment. The dishes, such as Greek Salad, Octopus and Manti dumplings are tiny portions, each priced around $30. Portions are very small, so all three together are barely enough to feed one person, resulting a bill of $100+ to feed one before drinks, at a very casual, borderline hole in the wall joint. Thus, Mandolin is in an odd predicament of having to deal with the increased real estate costs of the design district, while attempting to provide a comfortable meal. As a whole, it is all a bit ridiculous. So, let's discuss the food itself. Octopus came out heavily burnt. The Greek salad is simple, but made with unripened tasteless tomatoes and as a whole probably worse than any Greek salad I've tried. The manti were very dry. Thus, price point aside, the food is not particularly satisfying. So, what is left after all of this? Once we put aside the exorbitant prices and the mediocre food, we are left with a pleasant atmosphere of a casual Greek island restaurant. If you've ever been to Greece they have the same tables and chairs with a similar set up. I had the Manti Dumplings and that was incredible. As we entered Mandolin last evening, I was immediately taken back to Greece and the Mediterranean and the restaurants we visited a few years ago. The blue and white colors of the building represent the Greek flag and are seen everywhere in the Greek islands. So, I was touched by the decor and felt so comfortable there. Please get reservations because they are about 2 weeks out. We were seated outside near the entrance. The weather was perfect. It is very cozy outside and everyone sits close to each other. You can actually hear your neighbors entire conversations. We had no secrets so we just spoke normally. It was a happy crowd last evening. Our server was very nice and helpful with the menu. She made great recommendations to us. We ordered Aegean White Sangria to start with. It was refreshing but was not the best that I've had. The full flavor of Sangria was not evident. We shared the Cheese Saganaki, which was fried cheese and it was good. I've never had it before. It was a bit on the sour side but still good. To go along with the cheese, we had the Grilled Octopus. It was tender and tasty. We also ordered the Grilled Prawns, which were amazing and perfectly grilled. We had an enjoyable evening and hope to do it again soon. We luckily managed to score a last minute reservation on a super busy weekend to Mandolin by looking on Resy. The place was packed when we arrived, and were seated in their outdoor patio which is beautiful in the winter... summers might be a bit sticky. Our table was a bit small but we decided to start with a couple glasses of sangria and a Greek salad, and placed the rest of our order at the same time. Salads came out quick and before we had a bite or two, our entrees came out as well. Everything was fresh but we were disappointed that everything came out at once. They offered to take them back to the kitchen but I'd rather keep it than let them stash it under a heat lamp and dry it out. Our entrees, the bread, salads and drinks were all great but next time I'd hope to be able to have a relaxing meal instead of having to rush before everything gets cold. If you're looking for traditional Greek & Turkish food - this isn't that. This is a trendy spot that serves Greek inspired items. Everything about the way this restaurant looks makes you believe you're about to have an amazing experience. Unfortunately, appearances are deceiving. To start off, there's no parking or Valet. You must drive around to look for a place to park. The restaurant exterior has a Greek inspired vibe, complete with large trees incorporated in the scenery. There is no roof and the restaurant is roughly 90% outdoors. This might make the look of the restaurant appealing, if it hadn't been raining. We made reservations for my birthday and arrived on time. Made no difference, we were told to wait and we did - a lot! We expected to wait by a bar and have some drinks but they don't have a bar and you have to wait outside the restaurant- where it was raining! We finally receive our table and it's horrible. The table was sandwiched between an enormous tree and huge wooden beams that obstructed views and walkways. Not to mention, a massive staghorn fern hitting us in the face at the table. We were one of the few tables not covered by an umbrella. Making it very stressful because it had just rained. We asked if we could sit somewhere else but they said the restaurant was too full. We asked if the server could bring an umbrella out like the hostess said, but he looked confused and said "they don't have umbrellas, we would just get wet!!" The horrible metal Cafe chairs we had at our table need to be thrown in the trash. They are uncomfortable, cold and small, besides looking cheap. Our server was pleasant but not attentive. He gave us terrible service with a smile. Never offered drink refills. Never offered more wine. Never offered us Pita bread, considering the bread provided was rock hard. We would've paid for pita. We started by ordering a bottle of "fine wine" selected by our server. We received Thevenet & Fils Bourgogne. The wine was disgusting and after researching, we find out it's not a good wine. No help from our server. We also ordered diet coke served in a tiny mini can - never got offered a refill. We continued by ordering the following items: The Turkish sampler.Which includes hummus, tomato & eggplant. Pretty basic. Cheese saganaki - Total disappointment! No fire, no flame, no fun! Even at Opa in Hollywood, or at any Greek festivals, you're able to get your flaming saganaki. Not here. They don't even squeeze the lemon for you. The zucchini chips, battered, fried and served with tzatziki. Very good. The Greek Village salad, was very nice. Ali Nazik ground lamb over smoked eggplant yogurt. Was ok. Oyster Mushroom Lahmacun with urfa pepper is very dry and tasted like it needed a dipping sauce. The Manti Dumplings dish told by our server to be special, were basically a ton of filler yogurt sauce and few Dumplings. The actual dumplings were small and extremely firm, served cold. Not appealing and not very appetizing. For dessert we ordered the honey cake and the chocolate cake. The honey cake was good but the pastry shell was overbaked. We ordered the chocolate cake as well, which was very rich, not sweet. It was missing whipped cream or something to offput the darkness of the chocolate. We asked our server what the olive oil was on the table, he said they sell it inside. They don't! However, they do have an entire section of restaurant indoors that was empty. We could've sat there from the beginning but it's obvious our server didn't want to move us. So what does it say when the best items on their menu is the salad and the zucchini chips - pretty sad. Overall, this place is a farce. Chock full of fake vibes, small, overpriced portions and even worst food. Fake Greek, fake Turkish. I would never go back to Mandolin. I would never recommend.
