After a long drive from the Bay Area, we always love stopping at the Elk Store before proceeding onto Irish Beach. Here we can stock up on milk or other items hard to preserve on a long drive. Our favorite thing are their bakery-quality desserts. Just delicious! Before heading out on a days adventure, it's handy to also stop here for a sandwich to take along. They make it fresh while you wait. We also have found unusual gift items here. On our last visit, my wife picked up some polenta and paté from Spain. Service was good, greeted and assisted as soon as we walked in. Store was cute, lots of little things to look at while waiting for our sandwich's. Stopped here on our way out of Elk for some beverage and snacks for the road. This shop is a very friendly and cozy shopping space, they carry pretty good variety for the size. We rolled up right at 11am when it opened - funny story was that the sign was still flipped to "Closed" and there was a small line outside wondering if the store was open yet - it was, and the staff was friendly! There is a nice souvenirs/knick-knacks section in the middle with some fun options to bring home. We picked up a super nice tote. read more

The Elk Store is a fun stop on the way north from Point Arena on Hwy. 1; a nice place to pick up some lunch and stretch your legs. You can browse for picnic goods or get one of their sandwiches (we enjoyed our reubens). If you cross the highway and head towards the ocean, you'll find restrooms asome picnic tables with great views and a short coastal trail. Staff were not unpleasant, but not particularly friendly or communicative either. read more

The cutest little mini grocery store with amazing sandwiches that were so fresh. This place was located literally right around the corner from our stay which made it great for walking to. They had all the basics you might need and most of the items were of high quality. Sweet little gem find. Only thing to note is they do close early which may not be ideal if you're getting in late which we did. read more

Stayed in Elk for a few days so we stopped here one day looking for cheese for a charcuterie board. Yelp has Elk Store marked as a cheese stop which is def is not but a general store/sandwich shop it is. The staff was super friendly and we felt welcomed when we walked in. Even though they didn't have much of a cheese selection they are well stocked for picnics so we opted to get some lunch and snacks to go. They are pretty well stocked - local wines, fancy sodas (like Mexican Coke and Fanta), and a good array of snacks including chips and local crafts too. They offer a nice selection of paninis that are ready to press or you could order a custom sandwich. The caprese panini with pesto was ok, but the tomato needed to be fresher. My brother loved the Grinder which was chock full of various meats and my friend ordered a custom sammy made of turkey and cheese. She raved about hers and it looked super good. I hadn't planned on getting anything to eat, but I'm sure glad that I did as I left with the best breakfast sandwich that I have ever eaten and very fine cup of coffee. This place used to have great sandwiches that were reasonably priced. My favorite was the "mule" on a toasted bun. Very filling and delicious, Not sure what happened (new owner?) but during our last visit, the prices jumped to about $16 for a simple bread sliced turkey sandwich like one would make at home. What a fabulous place, not to be missed. It appears to be an old hole in the wall country store, and it is, yet so much more. It's interesting to just walk around and to see all the unique product that they carry. It is very impressive, and some nicely made local things making it all that more interesting. California has an amazing array of little general stores with great stuff not usually found outside rural New England. We decided to get a couple of house made tortas with jalapeno, a special of the day. Grabbed a bag of chips to accompany it, and had a horrible time deciding on a drink from the well stocked, unique array of choices. They carry FENTIMAN'S sodas!! Holy cow. We haven't seen those since recently traveling the English countryside. Impressive. OK, the torta was perfect, big and delicious and hit the spot. Loved it. We also got a homemade cookie and that just was a nice end to a good meal. We had to smile as the second time we went by the place was packed full of Asian tourists totally bewildered. We purchased a 2022 Tide Chart, a bottle of Murder Ridge Cabernet, some pickled goods and a fresh-baked chocolate chip & hazelnut cookie. Not a huge selection, but everything is intentionally selected a high-quality. I will definitely make a point of stopping by anytime I am driving through Elk! read more

Came here this past weekend after burying my mother in law just up the road. My husband had ordered and was waiting for $60 worth of sandwiches when I walked in with my mother in law's caretaker and her young autistic daughter and they asked if they could use the bathroom. The owner said no and there was a public bathroom across the street- we had already tried that but it was super dirty and the daughter wouldn't go in it. We walked out and my husband heard the owner saying to his wife that he 'almost let us use the bathroom'. I don't know what this was about, but hopefully it had nothing to do with the fact that the caretaker and her daughter are black. Looking back, I'm kicking myself for not asking about the bathroom myself but where we're from this isn't how people are treated. My husband then heard the owner start talking about the bulldozer outside so he informed him that it was there because it had just assisted in burying his mom. The owner then decided it was appropriate to start asking about my husband and his mom's relation to Elk, as if them having been residents of Elk was important. This entire experience was extremely off putting on an already horrible day. We will absolutely not be back. read more

My best friend and I thought we'd be picnicking on a table outside of this gorgeous store later to find out it's their display table! HA! Thankfully waiting for the delicious food from next door, Queenie's Roadhouse Cafe, gave us time for Elk Store to open. Such a quaint and beautiful store! So many amazing things - I couldn't help but purchase a beautiful bracelet, a box of matches, Dick Taylor Orange Bourbon Pecan dark chocolate (YES), and a mini-sized deck of cards (why are smaller things just that much cuter?!). Elk is a super quiet town and everything closes really early. We missed dinner reservations at the place we were staying so rushed to this little store. Because of COVID, the store owner has a table set outside and he walks around the store and shops for you. He was nice enough to help us out together a little cheese and meat board with items he had. Customer at the counter with vendor doing their shit, stf for 20 seconds and handle your customer. I brought people to this store over and over for years. No more. Got 2 samiches... why is the tuna melt different...I forgave the fact that you called it a tuna melt but didn't have cheese... I was ok with that because it tasted amazing... (was that capers?) Regardless, I got a pastrami that was passable and a tuna melt that was just a tuna sandwich warmed up. Bring back good shit guys. I love this place. We both had the norcal sandwich, which is the standard turkey/mayo/sprouts/avocado one that, though I do not know the origins, would describe as a regional classic. Add bacon. Live a little. The clam chowder though, is subpar as it is too watery. So maybe skip that. read more

As a local, I stop by the elk store all the time. Whether it be for coffee, a tea, hot sauce, cider, one of the best sandwiches on the coast or a delicious cookie!! I love the elk store, it's a personal favorite. The folks who work there are beautiful and kind too. Tip: after you get your sandwich and snacks.. head across the street through the parking lot and down the trail to the elk beach. Stopped in for a couple sandwiches after coming up from the beach. The shop is cute and has a good selection of snacks and stuff to buy. Prices are a little high but on par with any of the little towns on the coast. The sandwiches were ok, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. The 4 mules (pastrami pickles and mustard) was a pretty standard pastrami sandwich - the pastrami was sliced thin and wasn't too flavorful, and the rye bread was super dry, this one wasn't great. The Lorenzo was better - Italian style sandwich on a French roll. The bread was much better, the pepperoncinis were a good touch, and overall it just tasted much better. It didn't have much meat on it though. Service, although nice, is painfully slow here. My advice is to order food immediately then start walking around, it'll be 10 minutes for a cold sandwich. read more

Best surprise find on our roadtrip up from SF to Portland! I am so depended on yelp for finding food and was hesitant to go anywhere when I didn't have reception. We stopped by the restaurant near it first and the menu just didn't have anything that I was interested in. We came to this store more so as a last option, but the food were far from that. My boyfriend and I split the Bahn Mi and the Tri-cut(not sure the name), and both were delicious beyond expectations. I also got a rose soda and it was actually real rose flavored! Exceptional customer service! Tasty sandwich and chowder. I had a one-of-a-kind experience here last week. I live a few towns up the coast and stopped on my way back from a hike for a sandwich. I had called in my order, and the woman asked when I'd arrive, deciding to wait to dish up my clam chowder. So thoughtful. When I arrived, I was chatting with Stacey the very friendly staff, while Sean the owner made sandwiches. Stacey gave me recommendations for a beach down the coast that was worth checking out. Later, I'm checking my Facebook messages, and I had a message from someone I didn't know saying, "Were you at the Elk Store?" Stacey found me on Facebook to let me know I'd left my credit card at the store. Above and beyond customer service! Locally sourced coffee, delicious sandwiches made to go, baked goods from a nearby bakery, sourdough bread with seaweed from Harbor House Inn (chef forages the seaweed from the beach across the street!), locally made kombucha, and cute souvenirs like ceramic mugs and hats. Best sandwiches in the world!!! Traveling back to SoCal we stop for lunch at the Elk Store and Deli only to discover the best sandwich shop in the world. They craft everything from scratch and every ingredient is an experience in itself, they smoke some of the meats and poultry right outside the place and it makes for a great experience to chat with the friendly owners. This store is newly owned by a young couple from Massachusetts. So adorable! Everything so clean and well placed, kitchy items that remind one of a little store in upstate Massachusetts or Vermont. Excellent, smart high quality selection (what small store in a dinky town is going to have fresh miso?!) Helpful and cheerful people run this place and make amazing sandwiches and other fresh food daily....plus deliveries from all sorts of great vendors from bread to coffee to eggs to cheese. The staff were friendly and this made for a great lunch for us!
