Excellent, smart high quality selection (what small store in a dinky town is going to have fresh miso?!) Helpful and cheerful people run this place and make amazing sandwiches and other fresh food daily....plus deliveries from all sorts of great vendors from bread to coffee to eggs to cheese. We've even picked up a bunch of gifts to bring home, as well as wine and craft beer for our trip. LOVE IT!! read more

Although we weren't able to go into the store due to covid restrictions, we ordered and received wonderful sandwiches and picked out some provisions at the front door. The staff were friendly and this made for a great lunch for us! This is no doubt one of my favorite things in Elk California! Pretty rare to find a small country store with fine wine, cowgirl creamery cheeses, locally sourced, smoked and produced sausage, a good selection of craft beer and local (within 20 miles) wines. Great place to stop by and stock up on items for a picnic on the beach or a hike or just to travel down Highway 1. Definitely worth a stop if you are driving through, or staying locally. The best Panini ever. My husband and I agreed and we are not fans of paninis. The store is so cute too, and accross the street from a gorgeous trail and view of the ocean. I had a delicous pastry there, from a Fort Bragg Bakery, with marzipan. The coffee was delicious too. The service was excellent. It was our first stop on our Mendocino Coast trip and it was a great start. Everything looked so fresh and there were lots of gifts to buy and amazing looking wines from the region. Prices were good too! I got a beautiful t-shirt for my daughter made by a local artist, who was the husband of the sweet French lady who made our paninis. My daughter loved it and for the quality of the organic cotton and the unique art, $20 was so inexpensive! We will be back!!! read more

Not much along the north coast CA 1 but this is worth stopping at. We arrived about 30 minutes before they opened, but my wife really wanted a sandwich for lunch so we hung out at the beach until they opened. I'm glad we did. The two people working were very friendly and helpful with answering any questions and with suggestions. They carry a lot of great beer, local wine, and organic products. The sandwiches are very reasonably priced, especially considering how isolated they are. We grabbed 2 of their signature sandwiches, some local products, and a beer. When we stopped on the beach about 2 hours later the sandwiches hadn't gotten soggy and were still fresh. Both were pretty hearty and very good. I'd highly recommend stopping in here either for local goods or their food. I know next time we are in the area we will stop in again! read more

Wow! What a find! They were a little busy this Memorial Day weekend but well worth the wait. A huge selection of gourmet sandwiches and fancy sodas made for a perfect lunch on the road. We had the Ruben, the Caprese, the Bahn Mi and the Four Hot Mules. All were delicious and we'll absolutely be back. When you're there make sure to take a few minutes to look around. The people who work here are generally really really mean. I hesitate to use the words I would like to use due to the public nature of this post. This place has a captive audience, and is overpriced. Along the lines of Little River Grocery, has a yuppified section of various cheeses ,wines etc that seems out of place, but unlike LRG, 75% of the interactions you will have in this store will be overwhelmingly awful interactions with wretched human beings. While visiting some friends in Santa Rosa, CA, my wife and I decided to take the kids on a day-trip out to the coast via Highway 128. We were looking for a place to grab lunch, and came across the Elk Store. What an amazing find! The store is really quaint, and has a great selection of high-end snacks and beverages (including gluten-free and organic options). For us, the best part was their made-to-order sandwiches we picked up from the deli. We had them build custom sandwiches from the menu board, which turned out to be really delicious, and also picked up some chips and drinks. The sandwiches were super fresh, huge and very reasonably priced. I ordered a turkey/avocado/sprouts on a sourdough baguette, and it could have easily fed two. Apparently the store is under new ownership, and all around, they couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Another great part about the store was the proximity to one of the most amazing stretches of beach we've ever seen. There is beach access directly across from the Elk Store, and per the shop owner's suggestion, we decided to walk down there to enjoy our lunch. It was perfect for us, and a nice little break from our road trip! The massive beach is gorgeous and quiet--perfect for our impromptu picnic. We will definitely visit the Elk Store again! read more

The Elk Store would be a great deli anywhere on the map but the fact that you can find such a high quality place in a rural environment is so special. The long list of sandwiches and prepared foods are chosen with care, made with quality ingredients and taste amazing (I just scarfed down a hot caprese panini with turkey on fresh sour dough and it was delicious)! Their wine selection is one of the best on the coast and the artisanal housewares they sell are very well curated. Not to mention the folks working there! who are all just lovely people and professional and kind. Hats off to this little shop for keeping things running smoothly (and deliciously) during this very difficult time for small businesses. Went here while in the area to stop and grab a sandwich. First off they are $8 - not too bad since there obviously is not much alternatives. I was the only person in the store at the time so I should have had the gentleman's full attention - so i thought! I order two sandwiches - got them made, paid, bagged them up and on our way! Once it was time to eat the sandwich I discovered while they got 1 correct (although there "special sauce" they put a ton on so beware!) the other I asked for two kinds of meats (I got 1) and no onion - guess what! I got onions and yes I have allergies. For a shop that had 3 employees and 1 customer I was surprised they could screw up a sandwich. Next time I will pre-pack my lunch! read more

Elk is definitely a travelers hot spot for pictures of the beach or the redwood forest, but one spot to stop at during your journeys is the Elk Store. Great food, fabulous options and even better service. The Deli section provides unique sandwiches like the "Greenwood" or the "Gunderson" and they do not disappoint let me tell you. My stomach is happy and so is my bank account, decently priced and worth the wait as they make it for you on the spot. We visit Elk a few times a year. When we stay at Elk Cove Inn & Spa, we always visit The Elk Store!! Daily we will walk up to Elk Store, drive if rainy. We get our sandwiches, which are good! I like that they serve Gluten Free bread and wrap, as I can't eat wheat. There are even Vegan Option a sandwich and wrap served at the Elk Store, on top of health snack, not just junk food. Love love love this little gem. We were starving while driving down the coast and stumbled upon the Elk Store. Ample parking across the street (Hwy 1). Think ocean one side, Elk Store the other. Super friendly staff, great selection of cheeses, craft beer, wine and the sandwiches! We ordered the special of the day-tuna melt on sourdough...wow! A roast beef sandwich and one I think called the Nor Cal. All were top shelf. We also grabbed some super tasty cookies from a local bakery and a sixer of IPA's. We'll be back for sure. The town is adorable and this is a must stop place for the food and view across the way. Wine taste down the 128 and lunch on the coast. Win win! read more

We were just up north this past weekend and drove by this sweet little town. We stopped into The Elk Store and wow what cool stuff they have.. I got the handmade jam & soap (beer) and our friends got some t-shirts and a hat. We hung out with the owner Sean for awhile also. They have a fine number of surprisingly artisan items, wine cheese, stump town coffee, organic items and a similarly artisan deli with delicious sandwiches and soups. Haven't been here for a couple years...but, bought a Elk T-shirt in chocolate for my hubby when we were at a wedding nearby, and it is my most favorite of all his T's, and he's got a lot!!! Decided to try to order a hoodie to replace the old ugly one he has had for years, and remembered how much we loved this little store, just down the street from the inn we stayed in, and across the street from paradise! Charming little store with high quality sandwiches. Stop by for your picnicking needs. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because of their wonderful service and superb sandwich. However they don't take credit cards (the owners are working on it apparently)! We were headed to Mendocino and wanted a picnic lunch for canoeing down the Little River. We stopped by this store in the hopes of getting a decent sandwich and were amazed to find a very well stocked deli (every type of meat and cheese you can probably think of). There were also lots of fresh bread options from the fort Bragg bakery. I got a Lorenzo sandwich for $9. While at first I was a little taken aback by the price, I didn't mind when I saw how large the sandwich was! Plenty of prosciutto and soprasata, onions, several slices of provolone and lots and lots of pepperoncini on a fresh french roll. The nice lady who made my sandwich even checked in with me if I really liked pepperoncini before adding a bunch to my sandwich. The sandwich was too large for lunch and I finished the rest the next day. You can also cross the street and look into the beach if you want! read more

Not sure what could be more perfect then getting some delicious sandwiches and soups (try the clam chowder if they have it - one of the new owners is from New England and nails it) and beers and walking down to one of the most epic beaches I've been to for a picnic. On a trip home to California from New York, we made a special trip to a favorite spot on the coast, Elk. For years we've come to grab sandwiches at the Elk Store, and hike down to the most beautiful beach on the 1. We were please to find that this year, the store is under new ownership, and have only made this little nook more special. The incredibly nice new owners have made sure to preserve the good stuff- the (HUGE!) sandwiches are just as good, on fresh baked bread, bright veggies and perfect avocados, but the new ownership has taken it up a notch bringing in excellent wine choices, curated cheeses, and all the yummy snacks needed for a perfect feast on the beach! We LOVE this spot, and are so pleased to see that it is thriving! The Elk store is a real treasure, and the perfect destination to include on a Highway 1 road trip. read more

For a small lettuce wrap sandwich, nothing special - just cold cuts - you might expect to pay 4.95 up to around 7.95 at a remote location - by the time I was out, they'd managed to fleece me for $13, and all I got was the sandwich. I considered walking, but it was already made, so it was one of those correct-thing-to-do conundrums. New owners seem pleasant (I mention because other reviews appear not to like the owners), but there were other minor annoyances like being told about five times how lucky I was for them to have time to make me a wrap.
