I've had the good fortune to be an Ella & Oz customer for three years and recently went in for radical color change -- dark strawberry blonde to platinum blonde. That put me in the hands of master colorist Jessica, who is excellently knowledgeable, honest about level-setting expectations, and has an admirable focus on hair health (given that I was requesting almost white-blonde hair from a previously dyed base color). She accomplished remarkable results in one sitting, with some clever improvisation, though I needed a second appointment to reach full platinum (due to the condition of my hair). Notably, because this is an Aveda salon, my hair texture remained super soft despite the intense bleaching. They really care for your hair and give you guidelines to maintain it. My second appointment was with Brad, who is a recent hire, gifted colorist, and very pleasant company. He took me to full platinum and gave me advice for keeping my hair color icy. I was more than pleased with the results. I'd like to add a special shoutout to Acacia, who manages appointments and makes you feel very much at home. The vibe in the salon is relaxing and spa-like -- which is a mercy during lengthy color appointments. I really like the products that Ella and Oz uses and everyone has been very friendly. However, I hate my hair. This is how my almost $300 balayage looks. It was done 3 weeks ago and the long roots were present since beginning. I have come a couple of times before and although I scheduled/asked for balayage, the stylist used foil, which I did not like because it made a staright line between highlighted hair and roots. I was used to getting bayalage where the highlighted hair blended in natuarally , but my previous stylist retired. I asked at my last appointment to have bayalage done, not foil and ended up with 2 inch roots , light ends and visible gray. I think that perhaps the stylist is not experienced with the technique, which left me looking for someone to redo this and out $300. read more

Yes Tim I did respond to your email about a week ago. Again, trying to play dumb and act as if you haven't received it. Since you posted the email you sent me here is the responding email I sent a week ago. 1. My mom did not purchase a giftcard. She called from Michigan and prepaid for a service that I got over two years ago. I did not use the entire amount that she credited for that service-that is why I still have money left on there. She did not come in and buy a giftcard. 2. Yes, I was ABSOLUTELY irate. I have been trying to schedule an appointment for over a year and this appointment was booked over a MONTH in advance. I sent a screenshot from last year in November, I had left a detailed voicemail with no response. And as I've explained *muliple* times I have tried to call numerous times since then and no one ever answers your phone! I also tried booking online with no response there either. 3. Your receptionist did not offer to book me on a different day or later that day- she offered to book me during the Stylists lunch hour. So this information that you've been given is just false and this is YOUR SALONS mistake--why should I have to rearrange my schedule and pay extra for a babysitter to wait around for a stylist who can't manage their time? 4. Your receptionist not once gave me a name of a supervisor nor did she tell me to call them on Tuesday. Your stylist Brad was the one on the phone with whomever and is the one who handed me a card with a phone number and told me to call it-- then when I called it it was just the number to the salon so then he told me to email them. And yes, I asked for a direct phone number for the manager- I did not "demand" for a phone number. When Brad said he couldn't provide it I left. And by the way, I DID call on Tuesday as well as emailed. I have every right to be upset and ask for my money back. As a store owner you should recognize the multiple attempts I've made to book an appointment at your salon and when failing to provide a service-- simply refund a clients money when that service is not provided. We are talking about $97.00 we are not talking life and death. It's ridiculous and asinine of you to refuse to refund a customers money and AGAIN there was no purchase of a "giftcard" no physical giftcard or receipt or mention of any "policy" or a statement emailed to my mother upon purchase --therefore, it is your responsibility to refund the money. It took me over a month to wait for this appointment which tells me that your business is doing just fine and refunding my money would not impact your life whatsoever-- it does however, impact mine when my mother used her hard earned money to surprise me and treat me to taking care of myself before the birth of my first child. My kid just turned two and here I am still having issues with this place--I have literally given birth and celebrated two birthdays with my child in the same amount of time that I've been having issues with this matter--do you not see how ridiculous that is? It is not difficult to refund my money--you are over complicating it and refusing to take responsibility for your business's mistakes. I will *happily* delete my bad reviews of your salon and move on when you do what's right and refund my money. I also *love* that you want to sit here and claim that your receptionist remembers taking the phone call TWO YEARS AGO when I was told you have all new receptionists and even the receptionist the day that I came in for my appointment said that she was new. I live in West Seattle and used to get my haircut over in the U Village. When Covid hit and the bridge was down I started searching for a local stylist. I haven't been happy with anyone until I met Jessica at Ella & Oz. A dear friend had great things to say about her and I wasn't disappointed! In fact I am thrilled with her cuts. It's always a gamble choosing a new stylist and I'm thrilled I found Xania! I have very fine and short (pixie length) hair, so a good cut is everything. Xania spent time understanding what I liked and asked lots of questions are she cut to ensure we were on the same page. 35 minutes later (she's fast!) I left with a cut I love. The salon is nice but getting an appointment/the front desk always seem to have difficulties. My first haircut here wasn't that great and so I had to book another appointment to get it fixed. When I arrived I was told there was an error in my appointment and so my "haircut" turned into a quick 5 minute fix - leaving with an unsatisfactory haircut. Recently, upon calling again, I was able to make an appointment and to no surprise received a call that there was another error in my booking. I'm bummed to write this review, I wanted to like this place. I first went here 1.5 years ago and didn't have a great haircut - the lady at the time seemed rushed and I got home feeling like nothing had even been cut off my hair. I didn't go here again until recently, since I moved really close. I've been back twice and saw two different people. The first was a guy, I don't know his name. It was an ok experience - the haircut seemed fine. He never asked me how my day was or anything though. I don't expect ongoing discussions but something simple and friendly seems customary to me. I left and decided to try someone else. I come in for a haircut 7 weeks later and the lady is shocked that I had my haircut 7 weeks ago. She is so stumped, asking me a million questions like - how often do I wash my hair, do I swim, how often do I style my hair, what product do I use, etc all trying to decipher why my split ends are so bad. I told her I was in 7 weeks ago for a cut at the same salon, I wash my hair twice/wk, don't swim, rarely use heat on my hair, use Aveda products... anyway, it just goes to show another haircut where not enough was taken off. For spending $90 on a haircut, I would expect more and not expect the next stylist to be shocked at how bad my hair looks. So now I'm frustrated that we have to take more length off of my hair. In addition, this stylist also never asked me how my day was, if the water temperature was okay... anything. Just makes for a long, awkward hair cut. She gave me a blowout and even that is not that good. Again, for $90 for a haircut I would expect more. I won't be going back here. read more

I honestly hate to write this, but my hope is that no one else will have to go through the same thing I did. I called for an estimate on a balayage and cut -$210. Sounded reasonable, so I made an appointment for that day with the senior stylist, Erica. With pictures in-hand, I discussed my desired look, to which Erica assured me there would be no problem. She then stated it would actually be $310 for both services requested. Whoa - $100 difference? I opted out of the haircut which left me at $265. Now, I probably should have walked out then and there, but my dilemma was that I desperately wanted to change my hair back from Kelly Osborne lilac to a natural sandy blonde. I knew I couldn't achieve the look on my own and wanted the balayage technique. She began the process but stopped 15 minutes in to tell me my hair was turning blue. Afraid of how this would continue to process, she washed it out, blew it dry, and told me she would either dye my hair dark (brown) or she could continue and I'd have purple, green, and blue hair. A.) I've been dying my hair crazy colors for 12 years. I know how it reacts to bleach. She had the nerve to try to condescendingly tell me that red and blue make purple which is why my hair is turning blue. Thanks... I'm a graphic designer. I know a thing or two about color, sweetheart. B.) How are you going to start putting bleach on someone's hair for 15 minutes and then tell them there's nothing you can do to get the color out? She kept asking me to come back another day - do you just not feel like doing hair today? Is that it? After almost 20 minutes of very audible arguing over what she refused to do, the manager came over to mediate. He was extremely sweet and was able to convince her to finally start working again. She slapped bleach all over and was able to lift the purple right out (as I predicted), but gave zero balayage effect. When you pay $265 for JUST color, you'd think you'd leave looking exactly how you pictured. It sucks to say that I'm already planning my next appointment to get some highlights done elsewhere to add some dimension to this mane. read more

My new favorite salon! I have gone twice now and have gotten a hair cut, a conditioner treatment, and partial foil done by Xania. She is amazing. She's super sweet and easy to talk to and I love her suggestions so far with my hair. I have curly hair and she understands how to cut it so it looks great straight and curly! Salon: Clean, inviting and nice front desk staff. They even have a quiet waiting/resting area that is closed off and away from the busy salon area. Location: Easy to find parking and free two hour street parking. Stylist: Lily did a great job on my balayage color! She really cared about my hair and preferences even though I received her services at steep discounted rate as her hair model. Lily took her time to do my hair and I felt like I was treated the same as a regular client. She even offered to adjust the color when it came out lighter than I had expected without question. I never get my hair done, but I was visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and my sister recommended this place. I made an appointment for a hair cut with Coral, and while she was cutting, we started talking about a rainbow thing I wanted to do. So the next day, I was in the seat with the foil and a lovely pallet of colors in front of me. I had never done anything like this before, but Coral was amazing and so was my hair. I'm so happy with my experience here! I've been trying to find a new salon for awhile now, after having some so-so experiences at the place I had been going. I live in West Seattle and stumbled on this place after browsing Yelp and I'm so pleased I did. It was my first time going to an Aveda salon as well. The salon smells amazing when you first walk in and I didn't have to wait any time at all before being greeted by my stylist Xania. She immediately made me feel comfortable, listened to what I wanted, and was easy to talk to. I love all the little "rituals" like the hand massage and scalp massage. She did recommend products, but wasn't pushy at all and I never felt pressured to buy anything I didn't want (though I did decide to try out the texture spray!). The price truly can't be beat for what's included in the service. Shampoo and styling was included, and the price was half of what I would pay at other salons nearby. I left feeling really happy about my hair and I'll definitely be coming back. read more

This was my first and only haircut and gloss at Ella and Oz. I have never had a gloss before, and was excited at the potential of a more refined look. It was the oddest experience, I felt like my haircutter was faking it. The shampoo actually hurt (an attempt at massage?), she only cut off a tiiiiny bit despite lots of scissor movements, and she scrunched my hair for at least 15 minutes and did the blow dry forever - it was charades. She seemed to be trying to make my hair curl, I'm not sure why, its not curly. Towards the end she spent a long time pushing me to buy products, which I do not enjoy. I sent a photo to my family right after and my stepdad said it looked like I had been in an avalanche. My brother said I looked like when mom used to cut our hair to sit on Santa's lap. I was still hopeful, but the next day I could see no 'gloss', and my hair looks like it needs to be cut, as it hardly was. Also, it was noticeably longer on one side than the other -- so weird. $85 down the drain hum. I will say the front desk people were extremely nice with answering my questions and they were both very professional so I am not giving less than 4 stars. Not going back. read more

I needed a pedicure and wanted to splurge a little I like Aveda so I thought Shanti would be a good pick, especially since it was so close to home. I called and made an appointment like a good girl. When I walked in no one welcomed me or wanted to help me I felt ignored. :( Finally someone notices me and checks me in, I wander the lobby area and waited, granted I was a little early for my appointment but not much. At my appointment time someone came out and called at me but not with my name, I told her that wasn't me and she walked away and I sat and waited and waited and waited some more. Finally almost 15 minutes past my appointment time someone came out to get me. I sit down in a rather non-plush nor comfy chair to get my pedicure. Now here comes the funny part the pedicure I made the appointment for, which was listed on their website and sounded good to me was the Caribbean pedicure and the girl didn't know what to do she had to look up the steps. I couldn't believe it, if it's service you provide you should know what steps need to be taken. The pedicure only got worse from there, and for $55.00 I expected a lot more. On a whim, I decided to go to an Aveda salon (or one that offered Aveda). I do not know why, so don't ask. Plugging in the information to yellowpages.com brought up several salons and this one happened to be closest to me. (I'm new again to the area and can never remember what's around - other than the Admiral Theatre). I gave them a call and demanded someone who was good with short curly hair as the last place gave me a boy's cut and I'm very sensitive about it. I was told that I would be with Phillip who is also their educator - fannnnntastic! Phillip did wonders. He rubbed, he massaged, he gabbed. Everything a wonderful stylist should do.. and then.. he LISTENED. I am not much of a talker when it comes to sitting around - I want to tell them what I want and then.. they do it. So I did just that. And you know what? He did it. I have a check up in 8 weeks. I might even have a regular stylist now. Thank you, Phillip. I have been a client at Shanti since they were still the Carlin Salon & Day Spa! Monique cuts my hair and is absolutely fabulous. I have weird hair - thinner & fine on top, thick and coarse in the back, and curly all over. She's a genius with my cuts & styles it wonderfully, too. I've also had massage and nail services there, and they're great. The one time my mani didn't hold up, they booked me for a re-do within 2 days at no charge, no questions asked. The only reason they're not a 5-star is that they are a bit pricey for my budget. But worth it so far! read more

Lily and Jessica did my hair and make up for my wedding! They did a wonderful job! I'm not a girl who normally wears make up and I didn't want to not look like myself on our big day. On top of this, the person I had initially been scheduled to work with had left the salon untimely.Luckily, Lily to the rescue! She took over my appointments and was she ever the most wonderful and delightful person to handle little 'ol me. Lily was reassuring and took time to figure out the right way to do the look I had wanted. She was persistent in picking out the lip color that had been very hard to pin down! My make up was well blended, it didn't feel caked on, and my makeup lasted all through the crying, laughing, and hours of dancing. My experience with Jessica was equally wonderful! She and I actually had to do a couple trials since I had changed my mind about my hair between the times were met, and she did my hair exactly the way I had wanted it. My final wedding day hair was beautiful and understated; she nailed it! We even had trials with my veil, which is something that you have to consider. She also made sure that my hair would last through hours of dancing! On another note, Jessica also cut my hair between the trail appointment and my wedding day and she gave me layers like you wouldn't believe. My hair now has movement that I don't have to do much to it in the morning when I decide to leave it down. For a low-maintenance girl like me, this is a win! read more

I went here to get my eyebrows waxed a few weeks ago. I've been threading for the past couple years because my skin is really sensitive and I usually get bumps and lots of redness (more than normal) after waxing. But I haven't found a threading place in Seattle yet so I thought maybe an Aveda salon would be better for my sensitive skin. I saw Devon at Shanti and she was great. I told her that I normally get irritated skin from waxing so she worked her magic and I came out with great looking eyebrows (I prefer the natural look to anything too shaped) and redness that disappeared much faster than normal. Plus no bumps! Shanti also does their waxing in a private room with massage beds and relaxing music so that was a nice change from the salon chairs I'm used to. At $18 it was a little more than I usually pay but I think it was worth it. read more

Full disclosure that I will probably keep going here because it's so convenient for where I live, but I am disappointed that I constantly feel like I am being nickled and dimed behind my back. They charge you for stuff without your permission. For example, at my last haircut, they tried to charge me $10 just for running a flat iron over my hair at the end of the haircut. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. I have never in my 32 years of life been charged for finishing styling like a quick flat iron. And news flash - it's not good customer service to charge your customers for services that they didn't know would cost anything extra. That's equivalent to a restaurant putting bread on your table and then charging you if you take a bite. They also did this with a hair gloss - it was an extra $25 or so. Not cool! read more

Desiree styled my short spiky cut 1st time, Perfect! Finger styles in seconds now. It usually takes 2 to 5 days of new growth before it's right, often styled too short. Not this time. And I would trust Genevieve with my life. The prices are not cheap, but fair for the quality that you get. I don't really think waxing is an area of your budget you should skimp on, if you decide to do it. I have also gotten a haircut here before from Megan and it was superb. I got a simple trim and layering, but she did it so that I wouldn't have to mess with it and now I can just get out of the shower, rub some product in and call it good.
