Here in town for work, called to do a order to go and when a women answered after ten rings I was asked if I'd been helped , I said no she told me to hang on. After a few minutes the line hung up, when I called back no one answered again. Pretty terrible customer service at five thirty in the evening. Short handed? Tough day? Just be honest with customers. After waiting for an hour for food and drinks, and being late back to work, my friend and I canceled our order. There were plenty of other people also extremely upset with this wait time. We had to wait 20 minutes for our order to be taken and to even be noticed, AFTER I went inside to notify a waitress that we had been waiting outside. No communication about how backed up they were was made to us, and after an hour I went to check on our food and they were about to start our order. After an hour. Usually, I love going to Ellie's, but this is just unacceptable. As someone who has worked in the food industry, communication is key. If the foods not ready, continue to check up on your people. We only saw our waitress when we placed our order and when we canceled it. Sad that this happen and extremely disappointed. read more

I have been going to Ellie's since the early 80's when I moved here. I remember getting a cookie and a coffee there when it was little more than a hotdog joint. I still remember Ellie working the counter and me thinking "boy she's one hot babe". I love the place, and admit it's a little pricey but like they say, "you get what you pay for". Disappointed! I went today to have a nice celebration lunch with my family. They greeted us served us drinks and gave us the menu. It wasn't busy since there were only about 4 tables total, usually there are more. We went after lunch rush hour too. We waited 15 minutes plus for our order to be taken basically ignored. I had to go inside to place my order. While waiting for our food a server was trying to clean up our table before we even got our food. There was a nice server who came out and made it all better. So it almost made up for the horrible customer service, but there needs to be more to be done. The lady in the front who I went to give my order to struggled to even take it I think she was new. Overall there needs to be some improvements. We loved the food and environment but I cant recommend it because of the service. read more

The food here is really good. Unfortunately, the service is very very slow. The last three times I have come here I have had to wait an extremely long time. The last time I sat outside by myself and no one ever even tried to help me. So I went inside and ordered a "to go" order. It was a wrap and an iced tea. It took at least 25 minutes. I was charged a $.15 "to go" bag fee. That was just for a paper bag that they put the container with my wrap in...really? Totally unnecessary. The total charge was $17.50. This place is horrible. I refuse to eat here. My girlfriend on the other hand keeps hoping they will get it together. We waited an hour for her soup and toast. Wrong size soup. Go anywhere else in town over this place. A different customer complained while we were waiting about the food being disgusting and under cooked. Today, my order was incorrect (wrong bread) and the lettuce used in my sandwich was black and old - just unpleasant. Photo coming shortly. "I'll make note of this." is all that I received by the manager, which was less than reassuring. Prior to this, the last two times my mom has come (in the last three months) she's gotten orders with overcooked vegetables and tofu. She once told the manager and nothing was done, not even an apology but similar to the above. I do not blame the management too much, as they are all a bit young and inexperienced but I do expect a more from such a reputable restaurant. Sometimes I'm just so happy to be a Californian. I'm a spoiled snob when it comes to food, so when I Yelped "vegetarian" while in Ukiah on a whim and I found this place, I was overjoyed to find something so quickly. The menu at Ellie's Mutt Hut & Vegetarian Cafe is fairly substantial. Not all of the ingredients are the freshest (meaning the salsa on my tofu ranchero might have been canned), but just the fact that this place exists at all in this mountain town makes sort of makes it ok. Food is delicious. There's disagreement there. Johnny Cakes are delicious & their breakfast burrito. & you can make it vegan if necessary. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the service is mediocre. They don't recognize new customers right away & sometimes it affects their customer service. The staff are nice but they could be a bit more attentive to us customers. Now here's my big issue & why I gave them 3 stars & not 4 or 5: What's with the rounding up a few pennies & making the customer pay for it? If the total of my bill is $13.68 then charge me $13.78 don't charge me $13.80 & insist that's what I owe. Yeah I know I know it's only 2 pennies....but still! If you want to round down to $13.75 that's fine with me (and sometimes they do round down) but i don't find the logic in putting on the receipt showing that you are forcing customers to pay more. Like I said before I know it's only 2 pennies but the. Why doesn't the restaurant just ALWAYS run down & do charge meaningless pennies & force it upon your customers. As for the legality, I'm told by the consumer-protection folks at the state Office of the Attorney General that rounding up without an explicit and clearly visible explanation to customers is a violation of the law because it amounts to an undisclosed charge and a deceptive practice. The amount may be just a few cents, but I'm told that consumers have a right to a bill charging them for the total of what they ordered, nothing more. read more

There are few restaurants in Ukiah that offer good vegetarian food. I've liked Ellie's for breakfast, so I thought that I would try them for lunch; and, at this point, I don't think I'll go back for lunch. If I had only gone in for breakfasts and didn't have this lunch experience last week, I would be posting 4-5 stars. I googled Ellie's menu and saw a brown rice and veggie bowl. On the print-out menu - this info isn't on the board above the cashier's, by the way - the rice is listed as a medley that includes barley. I have a gluten intolerance, so I asked them for just brown rice. Twenty minutes later, I arrive to pick up my order to find that they had not started. Maybe they tried to call me to inform me; the only call on my phone in that period of time had an ID of "No Caller ID" which usually signals to me a robo-caller and not a business. When I got there I had to wait a few minutes (right up at the cashier counter) to even be greeted. Eventually, I was told that they didn't start my food because they don't have brown rice by itself, but that I could replace the brown rice portion with more veggies, which I was fine with, though, I quickly regretted saying yes to the offer and wish I had just asked for black beans instead. Maybe the rice usually absorbs the excess dairy - I love dairy, do not get me wrong. I love cheese. I love sour cream. I love yogurt. The veggies and rice come with cheese, and either yogurt or sour cream, but my dish was slathered in sour cream as if a container was just poured into it. There was so much sour cream that I - someone who does not have a dairy intolerance - got sick just a few hours later. Beyond that, the sour cream had disintegrated the tofu to the point that I actually had to add in my own tofu (meatless chicken nuggets) to try and make the food I just paid for something I could more easily eat. Oh, by the way, their online menus are totally out of date. Even on here, on their claimed Yelp page, one set of menu's is dated and one set is maybe the current one? Hard to know. I don't know why it's too difficult for a staff member (or the manager?) to spend ten minutes on Google to find the few places their business is represented and quickly update accurate PDF's of their menu, but it seems like the staff is aware and apathetic. I thought I was ordering a simple stir-fry for $8.95 but was told, when I was already at the restaurant getting my dish started (late), that it would be $13.95. I expressed my shock at the price difference and the staff shrugged it off and said a customer posted menu's back in 2013. After several disappointments in a row and just wanting to finish up the transaction, I asked for a glass of water to sip on while I waited for my food. They told me, "cups are over there" and went back about their business. Paying $13.95 for CHEESE ON TOP OF VEGGIES AND TOFU, which was disintegrated by way too much sour cream, and to add my own groceries to it, is way too much money. I loved all my breakfasts at Ellie's Mutt Hutt, but to have such whatever service with food I had to fix on my own and quickly made me sick anyway is disappointing. read more

It was a cold and stormy night; a night filled with despair and sadness.... Hmm, this feels a bit heavy handed. Ok, so it was a cold, yet sunny morning. My class was canceled so I had time to kill. I figured I'd hit up some breakfast and maybe do some studying for a bit. On a friends recommendation, I found myself seated at the Mutt Hut. I was greeted pleasantly and given my choice of seating. I then proceeded to demonstrate my keen lack of awareness by asking if they had coffee. I don't always make a fool of myself, but when I do, the whole of humanity rolls their eyes. Thankfully, my waitress was kind enough to spare my feelings and politely answered yes. It's the little kindnesses that mean so much. Following my drink order, I turned my attention to the menu. My hands began to shake and shiver. Was it simply cold in the restaurant or was I getting excited over the Mendocino Scrambler description? Clearly, I knew what I was getting! In short order, my meal approached the table and I was gripped in a spine tingling cold chill. My excitement could not be contained! Before me was a dish from the gods! Red potatoes, scrambled eggs, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cheese... wait.... what? Broccoli and cauliflower? My soul recoiled at the mere thought. Like any man-toddler, my lower lip set to pout. Fine. I'll eat it. "Would you like any hot sauce?" My waitress inquired. "Yes I would" I answered. "You have a preference?" she continued. "Cholula if you have it." She sauntered toward a fridge where, inside, contained more bottles and vials hot sauce than one might ever see in one place! Again the chill gripped me as the bottle of Cholula levitated toward my table... ok as it was carried to my table. As I sat there, looking at that fridge filled with hot sauces, I figured that that fridge may be the most Californian thing I have ever seen. Since this is a restaurant review, I suppose I should mention that my meal was delicious! The portion was generous and the fresh veggies really made my meal truly great. That may be the first time in my life I have felt that way. Coupled with my coffee, the excited shaking returned. Now the sad part. It turned out that my excited shaking and shivering was not the result of my anticipation and enjoyment of my meal! No, it really was just cold in the restaurant. If I was to guess, accurately mind you, it was close to 60 degrees in there. Every time I come here, I'm reminded why I tell myself I will never come here again. Unfortunately I keep making the mistake of coming back because the food is decent. They have a sign saying 'please be seated' but the only thing that means is 'you will never be helped'. You will sit and wait for 17 minutes staring at every server that walks by but never receive a menu or a water or a 'hello'. Then you'll stand at the counter waiting to be helped and they'll act like they don't see you for another 3 minutes. Not even a 'I'll be with you in just a second'. Since when is it okay to not greet every single person that walks through your door even if it's just to tell them hang on. If you order over the phone because you think that will solve your problems, you'll get there and pay, then they'll give you the wrong order and they'll have to remake it. So your time spent ordering to save you from waiting in the dining room will be wasted, because you'll still be waiting for it to be re-cooked. Again. The food is somewhat decent. Although, overpriced, but I expect that in this town. But maybe now that I've written this review after nearly 3 years of giving this restaurant second chances I will finally wipe my hands clean from the nightmare and move on. Ellie's is one of THE best places in town. Their service is fabulous. If you call in your food, they will even bring it out to your car for you when you get there, hows THAT for service? As a mother, I found that type of service so helpful. I shouldn't have to wake up my sleeping babes to run in and they understand that. I am kind of surprised some people give the food 5 stars- I do like the Mutt Hut, but, this is a small, plain, no frills kinda place that prepares simple wraps, sandwiches and other easily put together fare. Small and not very cozy eating area with traffic coming through and cold air from all directions. I love a place that has reasonable prices on an easy lunch that meets vegetarian needs so I do come here. Complaint: No soy milk or almond milk for my overpriced coffee? Very strange and off balance for a place that is promoting 'vegetarian'. Not only do these alternate milks cost less than regular milk, they have a longer shelf life. The coffee choice is singular anyway (one pot). I hear 'cafe' which inspires thoughts of beans roasted to perfection and a selection but this place is really just a pot of coffee: you pour it, you pay over $2 bucks for it even if you bring your own cup and no soy or almond milk for you. So I don't go here for my coffee. Not a problem. This place is a good staple to add to your lunch time hit list if you work in the area but not a destination if you are from out of town.
