I am kind of surprised some people give the food 5 stars- I do like the Mutt Hut, but, this is a small, plain, no frills kinda place that prepares simple wraps, sandwiches and other easily put together fare. Small and not very cozy eating area with traffic coming through and cold air from all directions. I love a place that has reasonable prices on an easy lunch that meets vegetarian needs so I do come here. Complaint: No soy milk or almond milk for my overpriced coffee? Very strange and off balance for a place that is promoting 'vegetarian'. Not only do these alternate milks cost less than regular milk, they have a longer shelf life. The coffee choice is singular anyway (one pot). I hear 'cafe' which inspires thoughts of beans roasted to perfection and a selection but this place is really just a pot of coffee: you pour it, you pay over $2 bucks for it even if you bring your own cup and no soy or almond milk for you. So I don't go here for my coffee. Not a problem. This place is a good staple to add to your lunch time hit list if you work in the area but not a destination if you are from out of town. And I guess $3.75 is the usual charge for a cup of coffee these days, but seems kind of high for very weak coffee. I don't mind paying $25 to $30 for a breakfast if it is a high quality breakfast. The first time they told me it was the cooks fault... tonight the offered me the option to drive back across town to get some avocado. Best BBQ Chicken Salad I have ever had in my life!!! I am not kidding. We needed to grab a quick bite to eat in Ukiah and this place is known for having the best lunch in the area. We were looking at the menus while the waitresses kept passing by us and they observed us as well but never asked to take our order. This wasn't our first time coming here. This is the best place to eat in Ukiah. Don't be fooled by the vegetarian advertising - they have plenty of meat options too. I think it is just to let the veggies know that they have a lot of options there. I often call in and order for pick-up, but have also eaten inside. Nothing spectacular nor is it anything bad. A little better than "just okay". For their Avocado Chicken Salad, the chicken on there is really good. It tastes like teriyaki chicken or its marinated in some type of flavorful sauce. The avocado was fresh but wasn't happy with the amount of avocado I was given. They give you such a good helping of food that I can easily eat it in two meals, So even though the pricing is a bit high, its not if you think of it like that. Ellie's is a Ukiah staple! Consistently great tasting food. Too favs include Johnny Cakes, BBQ Chicken Wrap, Tofu linguine, Chicken and Brown Rice and their lattes! Will say, order the latte extra hot or drink it quickly upon being served. They are warm not hot unless ordered otherwise. The food is excellent, usually very quick service. COVID has impacted service times slightly, we usually order by phone now and take out to save on waiting time, especially with the littles. I was there for breakfast this morning. The young lady taking my order at the register was friendly. I made sure to let her know that it was my first time there and asked what she recommended or most popular. After placing my order i was given a number and I sat down to wait for my food. She did not tell me that I had to get my own coffee. I sat there for what I think maybe 10 min? I finally realized that I had to get it on my own. I was brought my breakfast, I requested ketchup and was told by the waitress to help myself from the refrigerator. Wow. Where to start...the service is horrible more often than not the patron is left to buss the previous parties table. The vegetables are often soggy and seem to be compromised in some way. The overall experience is horrible and I would not recommend it! On another note most of the staff is rude and condescending as well as confrontational. Here's the deal with Ellie's. In general, their food is decent. It's not awe-inspiring, but they use lettuce other than iceberg and their tofu isn't mushy, so they beat the crap out of a few other lunch places in town. That being said, I'm knocking them down to 2 stars. Why? It's ideological in nature. Ellie's bills itself as vegetarian-friendly. Other than the Buddhist temple's restaurant (which is 100% vegan), it's the only place in this town that visibly advertises that it is friendly to vegetarians. If that's true, I would like to know what in the world inspired the counter girl to add chicken to my garden salad when I made it painfully, obviously clear that I don't eat animals. I first asked her if they had any vegan salad dressing, specifically checking that it was not made with eggs, cream, etc. She assured me that it wasn't. I also made clear that I wanted my salad without cheese. I would really like to know what she was thinking as she punched in my order with *chicken,* which had to be added separately (and also cost more). One might think, this being a vegetarian-friendly restaurant after all, that she might double-check this after hearing me mention words like "vegan" and "no animal in my food" as I placed my order. Apparently not. When my food was brought out, there sat the chicken. Okay. I can deal with this. "Hey, um, I ordered a garden salad...there's chicken on this...and, um, I've vegan, so..." [Insert promise to make it right] "Okay, great! Thanks a ton!" Should be the end of this, right? Well, no, not exactly. Having worked in restaurants before and also knowing what sorts of shenanigans meat-servers pull with food, I knew to check out the arrangement of this particular dish before it was taken away. Why? Well, see, some restaurants don't like to make an entirely new dish if they've screwed up the first one and think they can pick out the offending ingredients. Ellie's, Ellie's, Ellie's, I caught you. This is exactly what you did. I'm disappointed in you. I could write it off as being "just Ukiah." I could tally it up as a restaurant not being fond of serving anything without meat. I could accept it as simply poor service. But to bill yourself as a vegetarian-friendly restaurant, add meat to my *clearly* vegan dish, and then pick it off and serve me the exact same food really irks me. Veg-fail, guys, and that's why you get 2 stars. Stopped in for brunch last week with a friend. We are both vegan and figured since they have "vegetarian" in the name they'd be able to accommodate us. Boy, were we wrong! The waiter looked at us like we were crazy and didn't seem familiar with the concept. Just to be clear, Ukiah has a HUGE vegan population and at least 2 fully vegan restaurants. This is a market here. We explained what that was and asked about a few menu items. Apparently their tahini sauce that comes on veggie items contains some animal products and they grill everything in butter. Basically, besides a dry salad there was nothing we could have. Big disappointment. We ended up going to the co-op and making our own brunch. As an aside, reading through the reviews here- the comments back to reviews from the manager are scary! I took my sister and brother-in-law (who are Vegan) here and was surprised to hear from the cashier that most of the dishes are not vegan. The great thing was that one of the employees at the Mutt Hutt was vegan. So after talking to her, we were able to order a few different dishes that were adjusted to accommodate us (i.e. no mayo or cheese). All of the staff were very friendly and did not seem to mind the special requests that we made. We tried the tofu dog, veggie wrap with tahini poppyseed dressing, veggie ruben and BBQ tofu sandwich. What surprised me was that the sandwiches and tofu dog had straight tofu on them, instead of mock meat. I really enjoy their salads but their service has been absolutely horrible recently and has made me stay away. The last few times, my table hardly gets our food and they set our check down right away, walk away, and never check on us again. I am a waitress and I think that is just so rude! We've felt so rushed. Also, they only give 2 napkins. So I've had to get up and hunt down napkins myself. Just a tip to your girls, at least 2 napkins per plate and when they have kiddos, give extra napkins! If the service was better & the food was a little cheaper I'd come way more often! Ellie's is tad better than OK. It's kind of like a step or two down from Squat & Gobble or Crepevine (in San Francisco). The variety is quite varied from breakfast, sandwiches, burgers to veggie lasagna. You have to pick up a menu, figure out what you want, order at the counter and they bring you the food. If you are going to get coffee, tea or fountain soda--it's self serve. There were 4 of us for lunch on a Saturday and food took over 15 minutes to arrive, yet the place was not very business. The one thing that was really not good is the un-bussed tables & dirty plates/cups on the tables. Why were they not picked up right away so that new patrons can find a place to sit. I don't buy the idea that "it's Ukiah, so therefore there are not many good restaurants here". If Ellie's paid more attention to details like faster service at the counter as customers are ordering, food at the table in a more timely manner and cleanliness on the tables, then I'd give this restaurant a higher rating. I'd still come back though, as it's a good basic eatery. read more

I've never understood all the hype about Ellie's. For a 'healthy' option, it's not great - sure, there's tofu and brown rice, etc. but everything's really oily and smothered in cheese. The salad ingredients aren't especially fresh, either. It's average, at best. That being said, if you're in Ukiah for breakfast (and aren't in a hurry), it's probably your best bet. read more

Today's had 4 small pieces of chicken, 4 black beans, maybe 10 kernels of corn.... had to really look for jicama... maybe half cup of lettuce. (Usually missing something) but $10.25? Really? And half the size it used to be.... and a sandwich for $8.95 that is the size of a half sub. Sad. Locals discount? Dunno, they don't advertise one. I made a lot of noise & bumped other diners, trying to pull a wooden high chair into our corner, so that was awkward. This is a very casual, order at the counter style restaurant. We didn't realize and sat at our table for quite a while before someone told us, it's odd because there are menus on the table. My wife had a veggie baked potato, the boy and I had burgers-we all had milkshakes. The milkshakes were the highlight, and I'm my opinion the only thing worth eating. Our burgers were fried so hard they tasted only of char and scorched oil, the "home fries" were obviously heated and reheated repeatedly. The potato was barely fully cooked, mostly cool (some spots were outright cold), the veggies while fresh, were hastily prepped and sad looking (and raw), and the cheese wasn't even beginning to melt (obviously because there wasn't nothing hit about the food below it). The restaurant crew loudly gossiped (about people we knew, no less) while we sat there obviously disappointed in our food. A woman approached our table and I thought she was going to check on us, but no, she kinda threw the check on the table and bustled back to the gossip so fast I couldn't even try to tell her how bad our food was. We paid, vowing to only ever return for milkshakes, if ever. $60+ for three very disappointed guests. Sigh. update: the owner promptly contacted me about my review and offered to send a giftcard by way of apology for our experience. adding a star for customer focused ownership. read more
