**A Disappointing Anniversary Dinner at Elliot Aster, Not the Michelin Level Experience We Expected** We visited Elliot Aster at The Vinoy last night to celebrate our anniversary, and while a few thoughtful touches stood out, the overall experience fell well short of what a restaurant with Michelin aspirations, and a $300 price tag, should deliver. I want to preface this by saying we are easygoing, forgiving people who rarely complain, so it takes a lot for us to leave a review like this. I was especially excited going in after reading the chef's bio, which references Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons. I dined there back in the late 90s, and it remains one of the best meals of my life, right up there with dinner at Alain Ducasse in NYC. That pedigree set my expectations high, though not unrealistic ones. Unfortunately, the execution at Elliot Aster did not come close to living up to that lineage. **The good:** The team acknowledged our anniversary with a card at the table and a glass of champagne with dessert. The filet was cooked perfectly, the gnocchi was well done, and dessert was excellent. **The not so good:** Nearly everything else. Getting to the restaurant itself was confusing. There was no valet greeting, no doorman, and no signage in the lobby pointing us to Elliot Aster, so we had to ask the front desk for directions. Once seated, service was disorganized from start to finish. We ordered cocktails while waiting for our table, and they took 45 minutes to arrive, after multiple follow ups and having to close out a bar tab before the drinks even showed up. My martini arrived nothing like the version advertised (one plain olive instead of the three blue cheese stuffed olives pictured on their own Instagram). Later, at the bar, a port and a beer sat forgotten for 20+ minutes before our server realized he had never brought them over. Our entrees also arrived before we had finished our cocktails, which felt rushed rather than paced for a fine dining experience. The octopus starter was well seared but the flavor combination felt scattered, and the truffle sauce on my filet had almost no truffle flavor, especially disappointing given the chef's pedigree. One small but telling detail: the decorative olive trees hanging over our table were visibly dusty, which was distracting and not something you want to notice at a white tablecloth dinner. No server mentioned a signature dish, made a recommendation, or referenced a sommelier. We never saw one on the floor. I also want to mention the dress code, or lack thereof. We understand we are in Florida, and a laid back approach makes sense here. But asking guests not to wear shorts or t-shirts does not seem unreasonable for a restaurant at this level. Gym clothes, which we saw on more than one guest, is simply not acceptable at this tier of dining. Having worked in the restaurant industry myself, I understand things go wrong, but this was a long list of avoidable missteps, not one off bad luck. Given the chef's background and the promise it suggested, this was a real letdown. The bar itself is gorgeous, and we had genuinely hoped this would become a regular spot for us, especially given the lounge menu. We were hoping for something reminiscent of La Belle Vie in Minneapolis, a place that held a special spot in our hearts. We started with the Burrata which was pretty good with the strawberries. It only came with a little toast so we did have to ask for another serving. "Is this place worth it?" YES. Point blank, period, YES. Menu is short and small, but man was everything good. My table ordered family style and got to try most of the menu. We started with the Baby Gem Caesar and Parm Fries. Then we moved on to the Fritto Misto, Insalata di Mare, and Roasted Octopus. All great starters! For our entrees, we went with the Prime Ribeye and Squid Ink Chitarra. The steak was cooked to perfection and the pasta tasted so fresh! Absolutely loved everything we ordered. Aside from the food, the drinks, the decor, the ambiance -- everything is just to die for. The only thing to note is that, while you're waiting for your table and its busy, there's not really anywhere to wait. This review is specifically for DESSERT, because WOW. My friends and I wanted a little nightcap so we stopped in and got seated quickly. It is ALWAYS a good practice to ask the server for dessert recs because odds are, they're going to suggest something you'd never consider and thank goodness she did. She suggested the Pistachio Ricotta Torta and the amaretto cookie gelato, so we got both of those as well as some chocolate gelato. I am not typically an amaretto girlie, but that gelato was arguably the best I've ever had. Never had anything like it before, truly phenomenal. The chocolate was great too, really some of the better gelato I've had, but that amaretto cookie flavor with the little cookie pieces... truly DIABOLICAL!!!! Seating for every group size makes this perfect for a drink with a friend, dinner with the family, or a larger gathering! It surprisingly felt approachable, not ostentatious. I completely agree with the previous review regarding Elliot Astor. Specifically the dress code, or as they say, lack thereof. You could hardly call yourself a Michelin level restaurant when you allow T-shirts, cut off shorts, even gym shorts into your restaurant. Not to mention baseball caps on gentlemen. Come on, really. Here we were the other night, four of us, all well dressed, one of the men in coat and tie, the other sports blazer. Looking up upon the room, saw flip-flops, one pair of gym shorts and one disgusting shirt on a man two sizes too small. Figure out what kind of restaurant you want to be. **GOAT ALERT** The bartender was trying to talk me into a Caesar salad, and I was lukewarm about it. Just another Caesar salad. He said the one here is different from anywhere else I've ever been and boy oh boy was he right. The Caesar salad here is neck and neck with Jay Luigi for best Caesar salad in all of Tampa Bay. I freaking loved it and would seriously go here again and just order double Caesar salads and that's it. It's really that good. I also had the $23 Burrata and it was great too. I definitely need to come back here again and try more food items. For drinks, I had a $20 Crimson Heat. It was pretty good, I wish it had a stronger burnt mezcal taste, but I liked it. It was just a "meh" for me. This review is specific to the brunch experience - I haven't tried the dinner experience. I've been coming to the space for a couple decades, and I was excited when they announced a new concept for it. The renovation is nice, and I was excited to try. This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, lots of photo opportunities, with a very upscale vibe. The service was phenomenal and so was the food. I was very impressed with the brunch menu. The sesame carrot dip was amazing along with the burrata. I recommend getting the eggs in purgatory or the beef cheek hash both are very flavorful. It's a beautiful room and great service but I expected more from the food. We started out with a bang with the pull apart bread and crudo. However I was not a fan of the Sea Bream fish which was supposed to be similar to Branzino. I'm not a fan of fish skin so I had to flip it over to the non skin side which then made it hard to eat the salad on top. Branzino is a lighter tasting and flakier fish. The maitake mushrooms, as a side, also didn't have the taste I was hoping for. The atmosphere was delightful and again the service was excellent. Pros and Cons! Pros: The restaurant is beautiful, the potato puree is amazing, the steak was great, the artichoke dip was some of the best I've had. Cons: I wasn't too big of the Caesar salad. The croutons were very chewy (maybe that's how they are supposed to be?) but also they put little crumbles throughout the salad so it had little crunches that I wasn't expecting and wasn't a fan of. The espresso martinis were good but definitely more espresso than anything. The service was slow and we couldn't find the waitress at times. I absolutely adore this place. I don't know how I've never been to the Vinoy before, but it is gorgeous. Elliot Aster is a fantastic addition. Be prepared to take all the pictures of the beautiful decor of the hotel and the restaurant. Valet is $15, card only. There is some street parking but we didn't look and went straight to valet. They are pretty quick to retrieve your car at the end of the night. The restaurant is all the way to your left when you walk inside. First you experience the beautiful bar/lounge. Again, the decor is stunning. The restaurant itself is a good size. It is a little loud so not great if you're hard of hearing. My table of four was fine though, just had to speak a tad louder than normal. Dress to impress, most men had collars, most women were in dressing. The food was to die for. We shared everything. I found the pull apart bread and the vodka pasta to be must gets. Both are made in house. I normally don't eat carbs, so they have to be super special to eat (and this is). We also tried both the burrata and ricotta. Both were good. People say the Caesar is the best they've ever had. Maybe that overhyped it for me because I thought it was good, but not the best I've ever had. It's definitely meant to share, three of us ate it and it was a good portion. We got a side of mushroom and potatoes. For the mushroom we had the aioli on the side which I think was a good idea. I loved the mushrooms, it was also one of my favorite dishes with the bread and pasta. I'm not a huge potato person so I'd skip it next time, but my friend who likes potatoes liked it. The local red grouper was also good, but I'd choose the pasta every time. For dessert, every cake had pork in it (which I don't eat, I think it may have been gelatin in the frosting or something like that). We got two scoops of gelato, chocolate and amaretto. The scoops are actually quite large. One serving is a good size for two to share. They comped one since we were celebrating a birthday, which was very nice. For my drink I got the mezcal margarita which I enjoyed. I'd get it again. If you like mezcal drinks, this is for you. Service was fantastic, there were a couple people serving us so I felt like my water was always full. I highly recommend this place for dinner. read more

For my mother's birthday I wanted to take her somewhere that was upscale and delivered on flavor. I am so glad I chose Elliot Aster. I had previously experienced the lounge area for food and drink, but the full dining experience was even more exceptional. To start, the honey ricotta was creamy, sweet and the crackers that came with it were peppery, crunchy and flavorful. Our entrees were delicious. My beef cheek tortelli sat in a butter/balsamic sauce that complimented the tenderness of the beef cheek so well. The parmesan cheese was rich and the tortelli was perfectly al dente. My mother loved her eggplant lasagna- I had a couple bites and the red sauce was so fresh- the vegetables shined in the dish- a great melody of vegetables and spice, there was a good harmony there. Our waiter, Jonathan O., who was extremely professional and kind, was really knowledgable about the menu, which helped elevate the experience. He knew it was my mom's birthday, and he brought us out a birthday cake gelato to celebrate. The gelato was smooth, creamy and had generous amounts of birthday cake cemented in the dessert. I loved my experience at Elliot Aster, the food and service justify the cost. If you're looking for a place to celebrate a birthday or special occasion, I highly recommend Elliot Aster. read more

Room for improvement but a solid evening. I booked Elliott Aster for my husband's birthday and even though I booked weeks in advance I could only get a 8:30 reservation so expectations were high. First the restaurant is so beautiful! Whoever did the decor deserves an award. It is a very moody, romantic, chic vibe and attention to every detail was made. We were early so we started in the bar to wait for our table. Server was okay- didn't really want to help with recommendations and not exactly friendly but wasn't rude. When we were seated we kind of had the same experience with the server and the assistant - not rude just not welcoming. Both of our meals were average (I had the pasta). My dish was very over salted to the point it was difficult to eat. Neither asked us how our meals were. They never acknowledged my husband's birthday (which was fine but they ask if you are celebrating anything). We weren't asked if we wanted dessert. So the experience wasn't actually up to the hype. We did end up having a beautiful evening because the atmosphere was lovely. We are local to the area so will try again when they have a little more time to fix things. read more

First off, we were stunned by the location at the Vinoy. Service was excellent all throughout and the meals even better. We started with the seafood salad and beef tartar. Personally, I found that the beef tartare was one of the best bites I've ever had. We followed up with the. Kabocha Squash Caramelle and braised duck paparadelle. The squash had a delightful fall flavor, and the braced duck was to die for. Finally because me and my significant other were celebrating, the restaurant gave us the most decadent chocolate cake slice on the house. Best chocolate cake ever. read more
