I love this diner. The people are so friendly. Service great and I love the food. Just had broiled salmon, roasted potatoes, corn and carrots. Yum! I can't eat dairy and everything is made with olive oil. In other places , that can be a boring substitute. At Elmer's, the food has flavor. Portions are big too. Elmer's is fine, and I've basically liked the food I've had, but after last night's dinner experience, I knew I needed to finally leave a review. Elmer's. ELMER'S. It is 2018. You have GOT to STOP using and serving margarine. Not only does it taste TERRIBLE, it is HORRIBLE for you. I don't know if it's a cost cutting measure or an issue of REALLY outdated misinformation, but your prices are on the high side of things and if I'm being served generous slices of warm challah bread before my pretty-expensive-for-a-diner meal, margarine RUINS the bread and leaves a vile film on the tongue that puts a damper on the rest of the meal. The challah bread was missing the characteristic hint of sweetness one expects from good challah, so eating it plain was not much of an improvement and I quickly gave up. The rest of my meal was okay; chicken cordon blue with what was advertised as a mushroom Alfredo sauce was nice, but lacked salt. The "Alfredo" sauce was a light mushroom cream sauce, to my relief. However, it and the mashed potatoes I substituted for the fettuccini were most likely made with margarine based on the way they separated as they cooled and when I reheated the portion I took home. The salad dressing (blue cheese) also separated or the lettuce was so wet that a pool of unappetizing liquid was left behind, and I could not eat it. I learned not to order dessert at Elmer's years ago, so I ended my meal with a Shirley Temple, impossible to get wrong. My friend (she only had a cappuccino that she said was fantastic and looked gorgeous) and I chatted for hours after paying and our water glasses were still regularly refilled, which was very nice. I'm not going to stop going to Elmer's as it is the only halfway decent 24-hour diner option left in Danbury and I work second shift. I'd like to be able to say "Hey, let's go to Elmer's!" with a smile instead of "I don't know, I guess we could go to Elmer's" with an unenthusiastic shrug. We were in Danbury for a show, originally from middle of Connecticut. The food was awesome. We started off with the gravy fries really really good. Had a cup of chicken and rice soup and it was great and had stuff clams and stuffed mushrooms for dinner, very tasty. Service was quick and our waiter was very attentive. Stopped here for the first time this past weekend, and I won't be back. To start with, parking is tight. the lot is long and narrow with a limited amount of spaces. They do allow overflow parking in an Asian style eatery next door. I could not relax the entire time I was seated, as cars would pull into the lot, realize there were no spaces available, attempt to turn around and nearly hit the parked cars. The service was attentive, and friendly and the overall establishment was a little run down albeit clean. The food was terrible. I realize its only a diner, but the omelette I ordered was barley edible, and resembled something I used to get in my high school Cafeteria. The coffee was very weak and tasted burnt. I usually visit Elmers late night after getting out of work. Since I always enjoy the food, I decided today to order delivery through Vroom. I chose the Greek Specialty with beef since I love the gyro omelette at Elmers. My food arrived early to my excitement. I opened the bag and to my disappointment the salad was crammed into the same container as the hot food. I pulled the french fry covered gyro out of the container and set them aside. My poor salad was warm and half wilted from being tucked under the hot food. I started to eat the salad until I saw a bug on one of the carrots. (I do have a picture.) I removed the carrot and ate the salad anyway. The fries were bit soggy and undercooked, which isn't a huge problem because I was really most interested in the gyro. Turns out it was just beef in a pita. It wasn't a gyro at all. I suppose I could have put the salad inside the gyro, but then why pay the extra for a specialty platter if I have to use half the platter to make a gyro? I would have just ordered a gyro if I knew this is what I was gojng to recieve. It'll probably be a while before I go back just because I'm so disappointed in my food today. read more

ONCE UPON A TIME this was a GREAT diner. I have NO idea what happened, though, because our visit today was abysmal, just horrible. We went for breakfast, but seeing it was noon by the time we got there, we decided on lunch. It wasn't easy to decide what to eat, though, because the menu is HUGE. Pages and pages of selections, the actual menus so large we kept bumping them into each other's across the table. Now what was odd was that the place was nearly empty. Only two booths, one a Spanish-speaking couple next to us, the other another couple across the room. We wondered, because this place had always been packed. So I ordered the chicken fried steak with veg and mashed potato and, of all things, an English muffin(??) came with it. My husband got the stuffed pepper, with similar sides. Okay, now down to it: The "steak", which should have been a nice cube steak, was this 1/8" thin WHITE-ish thing with an insipid coating (it came frozen out of a box!!!) The "mashed potatoes" were from a box. The veg sides were steamed, bland, carrot slices & canned corn. Worst of all, my stomach HURT after eating the "steak!!" My husband's stuffed pepper had COLLAPSED--we realized that it must've been cooked long ago, defrosted, and microwaved!! His sides were like mine, awful and bland. AND he also got to feeling sick, he actually felt nauseous after the meal!! It was astounding to me how awful it all was. AND the waiter, who I'd previously asked, before ordering, about the cube steak, had no idea what I was asking. I wanted to know whether it was actually cube steak, because clearly, ownership has passed to people who don't know much about American food. I asked him if the chicken fried steak was actually a cube steak, and he kept insisting it was "round" (not a "cube", folks). OMG. And when he reluctantly asked how things were and I told him the truth plainly but politely, he just shrugged and WALKED AWAY. WHY WHY WHY didn't we just send that crap back when it came to the table?? is what we kept asking ourselves!! "We were hungry" seems a dumb reason now, trust me!! Personally, I consider Elmer's to be a go-to location in Danbury. I typically work until 11pm, which makes going out to eat very tricky, but the fact that Elmer's is open 24 hours makes things a lot easier. I typically eat here 2-3 times a week. I have had nothing but positive experiences with this place and the wonderful staff. Is the food the best I have ever had? Absolutely not, but it is definitely worth the price, however stick to what is on the menu. I personally prefer the Breakfast Combo as it is quite filling. read more

The service was ok. We came in really hungry. Ordered standard diner food mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce along with a Brazilian burger. My pregnant wife ordered a BLT. The food wasn't terrible but it wasn't with the money. The waiter never checked on us until the bill. Brazilian Burger-was way undercooked and Burger was similar patty to a frozen box burger from stop and shop. Fries were very good. Mozzarella sticks were awful. Marinara sauce was awful. BLT- how do you mess this up...well by putting chewy thin microwave bacon on it. I always saw this place with a bunch of cars in it but I now am perplexed even more. This is a diamond right on main road. Stopped by this morning for breakfast! The owner is super nice and typically on site greeting guests and helping out if needed. He is surrounded by a great group of wait staff. They are always very welcoming and attentive. The prices are reasonable and great portion sizes. My new favorite diner in Danbury! My egg sandwich (on gluten free bread) was cooked perfectly. The chicken in the souvlaki was a bit dry but still delicious. The cole slaw was so delicious, as were the home fries and hash browns. It is typical diner food, but soo good. Service was really great and very attentive. Let me just start by saying pretty much any other diner in the area is better (and cheaper than Elmer's). Like a typical Greek diner there are hundreds of menu items, none of which are done particularly well. The pot roast is passable, the lasagna is a bowl of grease with some pasta in it, and the sandwiches are bland. Your best bet is to stick with breakfast foods. The omelettes are pretty good and so are the huevos rancheros. On a more positive note, the staff is generally very attentive and friendly, and Elmer, the owner, is always nice and is really a hit with the kids. I probably wouldn't go here though if it wasn't for the convenience of being close to where I live. read more
