One of the great family bakery and neighborhood institutions. We've gotten their party subs, walked in for their pre-made subs, picked up donuts, cakes, cookies, muffins and the like on a whim and we are always impressed and grateful. Maybe a better spot for Italian baked goods, cookies even? The pizzas, round or square are doughy, tend to be sparse on toppings and a tad overcooked on the bottoms. We have only had their pizzas once on our own and at house parties. Wouldn't tend to be my first choice for pizza and have never gotten the hype of this place, maybe a local spot? read more

I stopped at Julian Brothers bakery after hearing about their struggle with business during the Rochester Road construction. Quick note - right now you can only go south from 14 to this bakery - but, it's worth it for this local gem. This bakery is part baked goods, part Deli, part grocery store. I decided to purchase some frozen, prepared Italian entrees. Chicken Parm to be exact. My suggestion is to buy them and throw them in the fridge to be thawed for the next day. The portions are larger than they seem, but still about a 1:1.5 ratio for meal to person. The taste was great and the quality was top-notch. The prices are similar to an Italian restaurant, but totally worth it based on the quality. I wanted to try out the baked goods, too, but I didn't really need bread at the moment. I decided on a Almond Ring and it didn't disappoint! Tons of flavor and very fresh. The almond was not overwhelming and the glaze on top was just right. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Fantastic bakery. My go to for birthdays cakes. Paczki are better than any in Hamtramck. They don't fill cannolis until you arrive so the shell is always crisp. Delicious Italian bread. The food items are excellent. The quality is always top notch but it would be very helpful if they would post prices! Either by having a wipe off board to display Individual items like Blueberry Muffins $1.89. Or prices on the bakery, deli & prepared cases because you get sticker shock when the total rings up and you get the receipt only to find out the Pepperoni Bread rang up at $6.19!! I know construction is killing them but this isn't the way to keep customers who did brave the inconvenience to get into the parking lot. read more

Called and asked how far ahead an order needed to be placed. Was told one week. It was 10 days out so I placed an order for 2 jelly rolls. Called 3 days ahead to see if they might be ready and was told they weren't ordered in time and couldn't be made. 10 days ahead! This was for a special event. Was told they called and left a message. I have no record of a call and no message. This place is out of the way for me. My previous visits were pleasant. But my last visit the person serving me was smug or a bit condescending. Before I left Michigan I used to go there quite regularly and in 1987 the Julian Brothers made my wedding cake and it was the best thing about my former marriage. Over the decades of never got a bad bakery product from them they've always been one of the best around very well run bakery I just told Mr Julian about hummingbird cake so he's going to look it up and keep your eye out because it's very very good I'm sure he'll make it very good read more

They're a staple in this area for pastries, pizza, subs & good bread. I like that they have Guernsey milk products, including ice cream. Their bread is delicious and so are their donuts and other treats. The frozen food has been a miss for me. Subs were ok, too much bun, not enough inside. They also have pizza by the slice which is good. But - bring you're patience with you. They operate on 1950 time and standards. There is no single line or check out, you hover around and you figure out who is next. Then checkout is comically slow while the staff meanders back and forth figuring out the price of each item and eventually sorting it out and bagging it. If you can take a deep breath and be prepared for a slow process, the above items are worth it! read more

Annoying part was that there was a small line but one of the two workers at the counter had a very long conversation with another customer, making the other worker do all the work and making the wait time a lot longer than it needed to be. I get being friendly but when there's a line of people maybe don't spend 10 minutes talking instead of working. read more

I have lived about 2 miles from here for the last ten years. This place has never really been on my radar until recently. A coworker told me I needed to try their pizza, so yesterday, on Saturday, I decided to do that. I ordered a large round pizza with pepperoni, ground beef, and mushroom. When I went to pick it up, I was amazed at all their selection of pastries and cookies and not to mention the deli counter. Everything looked great. I picked up my pizza, along with some cinnamon rolls and some cookies. Everything was good. The pizza was good. My only critique is I felt like it should've been cooked longer. Other than that, it was great. I'm coming back to pick up some deli stuff. This place is fantastic. read more

Updated review: pizza has been inconsistent recently. The past 4 times my family has ordered pizza from here it has been burnt and over baked. Today I called and deceiver to give them another try and even requested on the phone to make sure pizza was not burnt because the past couple times we received black/burnt crust. After picking the pizza up it was burnt and over done!! Very disappointed along with the rest of my family. I took a picture to show the burnt bottom. Also a couple times we ordered double cheese and it didn't seem to be any different from a normal regular cheese pizza. I won't be ordering pizza from here again in the future but will still come for bakery items for the holidays and family gatherings. read more

I met my father's friend Richard Julian over forty years ago and I believe him to be the hardest working man in baking. The story goes he was driving down Rochester Rd. in Clawson and saw the "For Rent" sign in the window. He went inside, signed the papers and began baking. November 2021 will mark 50 years. 'Nuff said. It's a neat little place to see. A few isles for grocery related aside, it's a cool little bake shoppe. It's not just sweets, either. Two or three different pizzas, submarine sandwiches and bread...glorious bread. Speaking of pizza, you can buy it frozen to keep at home for emergencies (be certain to ask how to prepare it when the time comes, for optimum flavour). Most folks don't know they have a conservative selection of dried Italian pasta, too! We called ahead and ordered a giant sub and a cake for my son's birthday. That homemade bake smell took over the second we hit the door. Just like 40 years ago. The prices are higher but well worth the value. The staff is incredible. If your new to the Clawson/Royal Oak area, this is a must for your bucket list. 12/20 read more

The fact that anyone can give this place less than 5 stars really just shows me that capitalism has corrupted people's minds. But seriously... A family owned bakery that puts their time, energy and money into creating delicious HOMEMADE desserts, breads, pizza, sandwiches, etc and people are really going to complain about the decor?! COME ON. I personally love the nostalgia that I'm consumed by when I walk into this place and I'm happy my 5 year old gets to experience it as well. They give every kid a free cookie of their choice when they come in and that alone makes my daughter's ENTIRE day. We come here weekly for various items, but our staples always being their Italian subs with house dressing, lemon poppy seed muffins, and their large cinnamon rolls. Though, we have tried a majority of their sweets from king dongs to eclairs to cannolis to donuts to cookies and they all have been SO GOOD. I've never bought something from this bakery that I didn't enjoy. In a pinch for dinner? Pick up one of their frozen dinners of chicken (or eggplant) parm or ravioli and a frozen bag of garlic bread and you're good to go. $8 for a full serving of homemade food? You absolutely cannot beat that. Speaking of, their prices for everything are incredible -- over half the price of Astoria with higher quality. We have been in here a few times. We grabbed a full size Italian sub and split it for lunch last weekend, the hubby loved it. We have also bought bread and rolls here. I haven't been here in about 15 years . Used to live in the area & grew up going to Julian Brothers , always excellent. 1st off the price was fair , the Italian sub & dressing was good , tasted the same . Deli counter nice . But the pizza was the Worst pizza I Ever had ! The ( crust ) was bland dough , sauce was flavorless like tomato paste out of a can , cheese & pepperoni normal & the nasty , fatty chunks they call bacon was terrible . What happened to your pizza ? The pepperoni bread I got tasted the same but severely lacked pepperoni & could have been baked a little better. Every once in a while you find a little gem of a business tucked way on a side street. Have not found a single baked good we did not like here yet and if time of day is any indicator of how good the items are, if you do not get there by noon on the weekend, there will not be much left on the bakery side. Only downside and it is not worthy of a loss in stars but they should tell the employees to leave the political garb at home, just keep baking and stay away from the political rabbit hole. Looking forward to trying out the deli side of the business but we always wind up dropping 40 bucks on the baked goods side and call it a day. read more

It looks really old and you would have no idea what kind of a place was inside if you didn't already know about Julian Brothers. The inside is nicer, but still sort of outdated. In my hunt for more and more and more carbs - because beer and pizza isn't enough, I come here. Walking through the door gives off a Frankenmuth feel. A bit of home and 70's/80's all rolled up in one. One step in and it becomes almost psychedelic as your eyes are bouncing all over the place - fresh made breads of all types, cut to order, are in shelves behind the counter. Homemade King Dongs, Bumpy cake, cheesecake, cookies, bear claws, and many many other great deserts are on display and a big menu of sandwiches, pizzas, and misc. Walking in deeper and turning right will take you to the sandwich, pizza, side salads and other foods (Meatloaf) are now on display. It's hard not to walk out with a little of everything and I often do. The homemade King Dongs, thin slices 7 grain bread, and meatloaf are a bad vice that I have to have when I come here. I recently learned that in addition to the bakery, Julian Bros also does catering. I attended an event that they catered recently and everything was delicious. Large, succulent pieces of chicken, stuffed cabbage, mostaccioli, etc. everything was delicious. I would highly recommend - The only caveat is that they are not available on Mondays. read more

I first became familiar with Julian Brothers bakery years ago when a friend of mine brought some bread from this local gem to a dinner party. I have been a fan ever since, spreading the word to friends and family members, and now to you dear Yelpers! Julian Brothers Italian bakery is located on South Rochester Road in Clawson and if I hadn't have gotten word from my friend about this place, I probably would have never know about it. Situated in a small, unpretentious building, Julian Brothers offers great bake goods like cakes, breads, and pastries like eclairs for a fare price.
