Over the years, I've hit up a lot of eateries in the Westwood area, but I never got around to visiting this spot until very recently. What finally compelled me to try this place out was that it didn't look all that busy inside when I walked by the establishment one morning around 10:00am. I didn't try a lot of things from their menu. Just their Bacon and Egg Sandwich and Croissant. The sandwich was good, but I could have done without the salsa like tomato relish inside the sandwich. The croissant was nice and buttery. I enjoyed it a lot. As for the service, it was solid. It's one of those restaurants where you pay up front and they bring the food to you. Drinks and food are mid, pricey for how it tastes and the quality. However, the ambiance is great for studying and I appreciate how there are a lot of seats with outlets nearby, as well as it stays open late compared to other cafes. The only negative experience I've had was being told to leave by a staff member because there were other customers, but nobody else was asked and I was deep in studying. As it's located where it's predominantly UCLA students living around there, doesn't make sense to make a student leave? But that the only time that happened. Haven't tried the brunch food, but I love their huge selection of desserts. Many choices, from full size cakes to sliced cakes/personal sized pastries. The desserts have been consistently fresh each time I've gone. During one visit, the worker was extremely helpful, taking time to recommend different cakes and explain adjustments they could make to coffee drinks. The Elysee Bakery and Cafe has one of those names which entices people to checkout their business-- I'm one of them. This Sunday I decided to take a look at what this business has to offer. This Cafe and Bakery is probably more of a University student hangout than anything else as it is in the main corridor of the UCLA campus. As you can imagine there's a lot of cafe competition choices for the students in this location so I was expecting a lot more quality from this place. The inside the cafe has a ok feeling although it's a bit of an awkward location from an ordering standpoint as you're basically lining up on the street if there's 2 or 3 people in front of you. The seating capacity is pretty good with a mix of different types of French styled tables and chairs but decor wise the walls and general cleanliness looked old and in need of a deep clean. Once I got to the order counter (it was a bit of a struggle) I ordered a breakfast sandwich, a special omelette and a cafe latte. Upon completion I was given an order number and went to find a table. After 10 minutes or so I was wondering where my Latte was-- I didn't realize that they don't bring your latte to your table -- although they bring your food -- which was odd and very annoying especially as it was only warm when I picked it up. Food wise I'd have to report there's no love in place -- hugely disappointing both on taste and presentation-- I honestly thought I was eating boring bread with some sort of tasteless filling so they need to improve this. As for the omelette which I specifically ordered from their website-- I'd have to say it was pretty awful. Not did they mess up my order but it tasted like low grade eggs and ingredients were used. We were parked on the side of a road and a woman carrying multiple boxes of desserts and a delicious-looking coffee walked by. She told us her treats were from Elysee up the block. We walked in and a girl greeted us immediately. She was very sweet and patient while we browsed. I ordered a mocha, a tiramisu, and fries. The fries were wonderful. They were shoe-string and had the perfect amount of crisp and softness. The tiramisu was decadent and not overly sweet. I'm also impressed with the chocolate used in the mocha. It was great. Well, the outside of this cafe is really cute and it's what drew me in. Unfortunately the customer service was pretty bad. The girl who took my order just had a bad attitude for no reason, I could tell from the get go she was just rude. The manager was so attentive and did everything to make our dinner a nice experience despite the fact that the place was full of inconsiderate people occupying tables with their computers and book bags interminably. My son and I had to sit at a little round table with two chairs and we saw at least three customers peek their heads in and walk out cuz it was so full. I think this establishment gains points due to its indoor amenities. For starters, it has a nice interior that is aesthetically pleasing. Second, it's a great study spot for UCLA students. There is free wifi and it's easy to spend hours there just sitting, looking out the big glass window, and having a leisurely morning. I've been here a few times and the brunch, pastries, cakes, and lunches have always hit the spot. This time I got brunch of a caprese omelette. It comes with breakfast potatoes and a bun. The omelette was good, but the highlight were the potatoes. I almost wish I had asked if I could sub the bun for more potatoes because they were just perfectly crispy and creamy. I also got the cafe mocha. It was good and very creamy. The tables are sometimes hard to come by, but if you wait a bit, one will usually open up. BUT the price threw me off... because i was NOT expecting my total to come out to $20. that much for a sandwich is insane to me. I don't know if it was a mistake or not but they need to do better. This place always seems popular in Westwood so I wanted to try it out for breakfast before work. Was able to get free metered parking before 8am during the week. Was able to walk right in and order, youre given a number and then you find an open table. I thought they would have a lot more options available and pastry products on display. Not sure of the ones available were left over from the day before but there weren't many to choose from. I did get the chocolate chip scone which was good. Latte was a latte. I love this café! I get pretty much the same thing every time which you can see in my pictures, so my coverage of the menu is pretty limited, but their lattes and cookies are so good! Some of the reviews I see are a bit critical of the service, but I come here a lot and recognize the servers and I honestly I think some of the staff is just a bit awkward haha, but always super kind and considerate. I saw some reviews saying it is a bit pricey, but at least for coffee and baked items it is comperable to the big chains. And I find the prices very fair, especially considering they are open until 10pm which is great as a student. My friend and I were looking for a sweet treat after dinner, and Westwood Village doesn't have many options at night--especially considering we had limited time before our show at the Geffen. While the Yelp reviews here seemed to be mixed, we took a look at the dessert case and decided to try a chocolate cake that combined chocolate mousse with ganache. It was a generous slice at a fair price, and the cake satisfied. We particularly enjoyed the ganache, and while I've certainly had cakes that were more moist, I've had plenty that were less moist as well. Service was friendly, though the cafe itself could be perhaps a bit more cheerful in terms of the decor. Amazing cafe and coffee shop in Westwood!! Super close to UCLA (10-15 min walk) with lots of tables, outlets, and strong wifi! Like the rest of Westwood, there isn't a lot of parking but if you live nearby, it's a perfect walking distance from UCLA apartments and campus. Unlike many of the other coffee shops in Westwood, Elysee has lots of room and I've only seen people have difficulty finding a table to eat/study during peak lunch hours on weekends.
