When placing our order, we clearly told our waitress that my mother has a severe nut allergy and specifically asked for nuts to be removed from our dishes, or to be advised which dishes she should avoid. Unfortunately, she was then served a dish containing nuts. The dish (charred cabbage) did not include 'cashews' on the ingredients in the menu. Shortly after eating, my mother went into anaphylactic shock. We had to call an ambulance, and she was taken to the hospital, where she spent seven hours in the resuscitation unit receiving emergency treatment. What made an already terrifying situation even more upsetting was the response from the restaurant. While my mother was in hospital fighting for her life, our remaining party member stayed at the restaurant and were presented with a £250.88 bill. The only gesture made was the removal of one bottle of wine from the bill. Food allergies are not a minor inconvenience. We made my mother's severe allergy explicitly known before ordering and trusted the restaurant to take that information seriously. The consequences of that failure could have been fatal. I emailed the restaurant to make them fully aware of the seriousness of what had happened. Their response was simply that they had "conducted an investigation," but they refused to share any details or findings and have not responded to my subsequent enquiries. Given the severity of the incident, I find this response deeply disappointing. It gives the impression that the team at Caravan has simply moved on without taking meaningful accountability or providing any reassurance that this will not happen again.

The service here is sharp, warm, and attentive--the kind of old-school hospitality that makes you feel like a regular before you've even opened the menu. The Opening Act: Borscht with Soul You don't just jump into a pile of massive dumplings. You have to prepare the palate. I started with a bowl of their Borscht, and it was exquisite. Because of that confusion, I ended up leaving an additional cash tip. I understand restaurants may add gratuity automatically for larger groups, but if gratuity is already included, the receipt and staff should make that clear instead of circling "tips not included." It creates unnecessary confusion for customers. Also, automatically adding gratuity regardless of service feels questionable. Thankfully our server was kind, but if service had been poor, customers should still feel they have a choice regarding tipping.
