A lot of New Yorkers will tell you this is their favorite burger in the city…read more Pastis was one of the most popular restaurants in New York during the sex and the city era, but it shut down for five years before reopening a few blocks away in 2019, only then introducing it's now famous Cheeseburger à l'Américaine. - Two smashed patties with crispy edges, American cheese, pickles, and house sauce on a bun from Balthazar bakery...same owner. Before that - the steak sandwich was the thing to order - sliced steak, melted Gruyère, and caramelized onions on a crusty baguette. Rich and beefy, with no filler. Nowadays - it's a tough choice. Torn between old and new, classic and reborn, my brother and I executed a perfect double split. We also ordered the French onion soup for the table - it's a thing of beauty - as cheesy as a French onion soup NEEDS to be, and just full of rich flavor. You can take turns dipping their excellent French fries into it, or better yet...dip the whole damn sandwich in there. And the fried artichoke appetizer - this is my kind of veggie - crispy edges...butter everywhere. This meal demands a martini or two - it's that kind of moment. I eat one or two burgers every trip to New York and I still can't keep up, but I really enjoyed this one, and I hope I can come back to try their brunch soon.

If Balthazar is Bergdorf Goodman, Pastis has always felt closer to Dover Street Market: younger, more creative, a little less formal, and completely fluent in downtown style. My first instinct was actually Barneys, which feels even more accurate on a vintage-adjusted basis, but using a departed institution to describe one that famously closed and then rose from the ashes felt almost too neat. Over the years, I've eaten here many times, both at the original location and since its revival with Stephen Starr, and it has never disappointed. The burger is excellent, I'm fairly certain I've had the steak frites and seafood here, and I still remember noticing someone else's lobster frites and immediately making a mental note for another visit. The people-watching is reliably first-rate, but so are the details that make Pastis unmistakably Pastis: the flowers, clocks, white tile, vintage mirrors, and beautifully worn finishes that have since been imitated by countless restaurants. What fascinates me now is the brand's arc. Pastis began as a pioneer in a Meatpacking District that was still gritty, neglected, and changing at extraordinary speed, then closed, returned with Stephen Starr as a partner, and began an entirely new chapter. That evolution feels fitting: McNally's original downtown instinct joined with a Philadelphia hospitality juggernaut, and a restaurant once associated with the frontier of a changing neighborhood has grown into a commercial pillar in vibrant markets well beyond New York. Few restaurants have influenced the visual language of modern brasserie dining as thoroughly while remaining this enjoyable to eat and drink at. Pastis now stretches into Washington, Nashville, and South Florida, with Miami already thriving and Palm Beach on the way, and I genuinely want to experience them all. There is something satisfying about watching a place that once helped make an overlooked neighborhood fashionable become a durable institution capable of anchoring destinations elsewhere. The Meatpacking original will always be the reference point for me.

I had the signature Croque Monsieur both times, and both sandwiches fell short of expectations. I can't exactly remember why it wasn't that good years ago, but yesterday's sandwich had the smallest, thinnest slice of ham I've ever seen - in fact part of the sandwich had no ham due to the slice being so thin! Typically, Croque Monsieur sandwiches have a large amount of ham - not Buvette - it's all cheese and Bechamel sauce. Ironically, the sandwich tasted delicious - but it was really a very tasty grilled cheese sandwich. Next up the Belgian Waffle. The waffle was fluffy and light and had a very good taste. I usually ask for any toppings to my waffle to be 'on the side', as they sometimes overwhelm the waffle. I forgot to on this occasion - and the crème fraiche and berries, with the sauce, made much of the waffle soggy. It was still very tasty but I didn't finish as it was too mushy. I was disappointed with the brunch, especially the sandwich.

The Bacon came crushed into smaller pieces, which I found a bit weird, but it was delightfully crispy and well seasoned. Service was decent. Our waitress was welcoming and everything came out in a timely manner. However, when it came time to pay, we were informed they accept cash, but only the exact amount... Meaning they did not give out change. I don't really like restaurants that operate that way. I would not most likely not return, though might try it out for dinner someday.

I have had mixed experiences at this establishment, but unfortunately, my most recent visit this evening (02/08) was particularly disappointing. While I typically do not mind being seated in the middle of the dining room, our table placement made for an uncomfortable experience, as waitstaff and other patrons frequently bumped into us. Additionally, there was minimal space to place my handbag and our coats. When I politely inquired whether any accommodations could be made--especially since two available booth tables for two remained unoccupied--I was met with an unhelpful and dismissive response from our server. Beyond the seating issue, the service itself left much to be desired. Our server was noticeably less attentive to us compared to other tables, barely checking in, neglecting to offer us drinks or appetizers, and taking nearly 30 minutes to bring our check. Meanwhile, we observed her engaging with and accommodating other guests in a much more courteous and efficient manner. This discrepancy in service made our experience feel particularly frustrating and unwelcoming. To make matters worse, I felt uncomfortable and rushed throughout the meal, as the host was constantly hovering near our table, creating an unsettling dining experience. Instead of enjoying our meal at a relaxed pace, we felt pressured to finish quickly. Overall, while I have had bittersweet experiences here in the past, this visit stood out due to the lack of hospitality and professionalism. Given these concerns, I am hesitant to return. read more

I've always passed this place while out and about and I always saw a crowd outside, so I figured it'd be a great place to visit. When I finally got some free time to visit for brunch I was kind of disappointed with the place. The interior of the place - to the customer eye was beautifully maintained to the historic original. However, in peeking in the backrooms, the place looked a bit dirty. Food was off...we ordered the Eggs Florentine and Cinnamon-Amaretto French Toast. There was a lack of seasoning for the eggs and the bread on the french toast came quite hard. Lastly, the service paralleled being in France to me - and that fully may be what the restaurant is hoping to achieve! Waitress wasn't friendly, had to flag her down a lot, and overall just seemed like she wanted to go home. I've had similar experiences while in Paris so maybe they're really trying to get into character here? Overall, not sure if I'd be back? Maybe for the fries which is really affecting this rating here because they were actually fantastic. read more

This was our third time at Elysian Cafe. Quite a disappointing experience as a result of manager Chris' unprofessional and I'll-mannered behavior. We wanted to get some clarification regarding the parking validation at Little Man's Parking Structure, where they tell you parking is free with validation from Elysian but at the Cafe they actually charge you. Chris simply rolled his eyes and walked away, yes he turn his back and walked away, in the middle of our exchange. We were sincerely confused as to what might have caused the attitude and reaction - still unclear. In summary, our customer experience was down-hill after that. Chris clearly handle the simple exchange in a very poor manner. Sad that that his actions reflects poorly on the legacy, and hard work of founders, of the Elysian Cafe. Not a good approach, Chris. His mediocre example then follows down the line to those employees under his supervision. read more

After I left Hoboken the one place I missed was Elysian Cafe. I loved their mussel and clam dishes, their awesome brunch, and their amazing atmosphere. I even enjoyed their waiters who I got to know very well. However, when I moved back this past March I was severely disappointed. Their menu had not changed, but their waiters personalities became grouchy at best, and their food was suddenly terrible. I could be more disappointed. This was my absolute favorite restaurant in Hoboken, and now I won't go near it. read more

I have been a regular at this restaurant, but after today's experience, I won't be returning. Despite having a reservation, we were seated at a cramped table near the kitchen, in a high-traffic area, even though several better tables were available. The service was slow and dismissive, adding to an overall unwelcoming atmosphere. The only redeeming factor was the food, which was decent that why I give 2 stars. Tried it again because we were in the area and my husband wanted to try it. I got the fish tacos which the waitress said was one of the most popular items. My husband got a burger. Fish tacos had no flavor whatsoever and the fried fish in the tacos was soggy. My husband ordered a medium-rare burger which came out well done. This is cooking 101: salt and pepper seasoning at the very minimum and cooking a burger to the correct temperature. read more

What a cute place. If you want a quaint little café for a quiet weekend brunch or lunch and want to feel a little like you're in Europe, this is your place. If you are willing to spend a lot for brunch this place is good. Food is tasty. Eggs perfectly poached! Omelets good. Pancakes were just blah. I was disappointed with the frequency of coffee refills. I had to keep getting waiters attention to get some coffee. And a 6 oz small fresh squeezed orange juice is five dollars. It's just ridiculously expensive. read more

No check-ins on how we liked the food, if we needed more water, or if we were ready for the check. I ended up having to stand up from our table and grab another waiter's attention for basic service. Even then, we were still being forgotten. I would come back here for the food, but the service would make me hesitate. The female bartender immediately came by to assist us and was a complete sweetheart. We started by ordering drinks, and I went with a Bloody Mary, which I had seen my neighboring bar patron order, though it was not on their beverage list. I was worried that the juicy mixer might not be that great if they were not promoting it, but, boy, was it excellent! The Bloody Mary mix was packed with fresh horseradish and pepper, giving it the real kick I yearned for. In terms of the food, I opted for a Three Egg Omelet, but using egg whites. I was able to choose 3 fillings and selected tomatoes, mushrooms, and red peppers. First off, the eggs were cooked perfectly; they were not runny at all and had just the slightest hint of a golden brown color. They were served with tasty breakfast potatoes that were cooked with sauteed onions, red peppers, and scallions, which were a wise inclusion. While I typically try not to finish all of my fried breakfast potatoes, these were too good to leave any behind!
