Stopped in here two weeks ago for dinner when me and my husband were on vacation. It was a pretty nice restaurant the atmosphere and decor is sharp and they have good half price tapas there. The only thing I was annoyed about was and it's not the restaurants fault at all, but there regular patrons there couldn't stop being rude and staring at my husband. I guess there aren't any 6"4 long haired brown people in Hyannis typically and this was very horrifying for old rich retired biddies that spend their Tuesday nights there. I have never had a more upsetting experience at a restaurant. After being asked to stand at the bar while waiting for our table to be ready, we got accused of sneaking alcohol in. This was after we provided valid identification and each ordered a drink. When we approached the manager to report this inappropriate behavior, we were told that the only thing they could do was seat us at the table we had made a reservation for. Additionally, the manager we spoke with told us that another manager wanted to kick us out of the restaurant but she had "convinced them to let us stay." Keep in mind, letting us stay at a restaurant where we had made a reservation and provided legal identification for is the the least they could do. There was no apology given and when we asked if anything would be done to compensate us, the answer was a resounding "No." We promptly left the restaurant and will never be returning. This type of behavior is both inappropriate and embarrassing on behalf of customer service everywhere. read more

I really want to like this place more. Its probably more of a 3.5 stars, but I was a bit generous because of the drink menu. The tapas menu sounds incredible, but I am usually left a little disappointed with the flavor. It not bad, its just not great (generally, just OK). The one exception that I've tried to that is the duck confit flatbread, which was excellent! However, the tuna tacos and lamb meatballs sound much better than they taste. Pretty disappointed. Here's what we got : steak and cheese spring rolls: they were supposed to come with "chipotle ketchup". Nope. Just your standard Heinz 57 ketchup... would have been so much better with a spicy aioli or something. Cheese stuffed mushrooms are filled with goat cheese. Gross farmy taste! Braised short ribs tasted like beef stew. Not very flavorful. Overall, very pricey for very small portions and not a lot of flavor. Would not recommend!!! read more

Honestly one of the best meals ever! We had the pan seared scallops with the truffle parmesan basmati, stuffed mushrooms, lobster mac and cheese, and lamb lollipops. Everything was AMAZING, but the absolute highlight was the basmati. We even ordered more as it was soooooo good! Went there for the first time just for drinks last night with my girlfriend . We were both very surprised at how long their drink menu was and the variety among drinks. She got an oreo martini and an espresso martini and loved them both. I got a vodka soda and a "gatsby". Both were very good and had strong pours. More importantly, it has been a long time since I have received such good service from a bar tender. It was standing room only, and Marissa found time to come and check on us multiple times and chat. Beware!! Read before you waste your money!! If you have eaten there recently and paid by credit card, please check your statements! I paid in a cash tip & they added a 30% tip onto my check after I left.. My bank sends me an alert for anything over $100....Glad they did or I would not have known they did this! I am being ignored by the owners who are also in disguise, as they are actively on the premises but choose to not let you know. The bar manager did refund me & claimed the checks were exact...sure they were. Lets see the proof!! I work at a restaurant on Cape Cod, and about 2 dozen of us decided to go out to the Brazilian Grill in Hyannis for dinner one night. After an exceptional dinner, half of us stayed to do some bar hopping. Embargo was the second bar we went to, and completely ruined our night. 6 guys showed up first. All Jamaican. They went and sat at the bar to get drinks. About 8 of us came in a minute later (all white, besides one), and the hostess told us we could grab some tables in an empty section. We we having a great time all around, and excited to hear the band and dance. The cocktail menu looked great, and I was so excited when I got my drink. A few sips in, my coworker, one of the Jamaican guys (who I have worked SIDE BY SIDE with for the last 6 months... a truly kind, stand up guy), comes over to tell me the bar won't serve him, or any of the other guys, because he has a driver's license from Jamaica as an ID. I proceed to go as the door staff about this, as it surely must have been a misunderstanding. One of the girls (white) at the tables with us had an ID from the Virgin Islands, and was served no problem. Another girl had shown her ID (from Brazil), and hadn't ordered a drink yet, but also hadn't been told she wouldn't be able to. Now, I've worked in bars in Boston, and have never said no to an out of state ID. What the FOH manger told us was that people were required to show a MA ID, or a passport, or a backup photo ID with their out of state ID. Well, giant debate ensued. All the Jamaican guys left, not really caring one way or the other, and not wanting to cause problems. However, the rest of us wanted more information. The door guy, when asked if this policy was posted, rudely told us, "I dunno. Check that wall of paper and see if you find anything." He also told us that maybe we should consider going somewhere else; this wasn't working out for him. I do not joke when I stress how RUDE the entire staff was about this situation. No one I was with was yelling, or being aggressive, just simply saying that this looked like racism, and we wanted to know where the paperwork stating their policy was. Some rude things overheard by staff members during this debacle: "What's with all these sketchy Jamaican dudes?" "Wow, they're really coming up in the world, eh?" I was even MORE appalled when I discovered the next day that two of my Jamaican friends DID SHOW MASSACHUSETTS STATE DRIVER'S LICENSES, and were still refused service. I urge everyone out there, to please take a stand against this kind of racism and behavior at Embargo. Not to mention they were overpriced and snobby, and that drink I was so excited about... didn't even taste that good. The bar- tending staff is rude and disinterested. It is nice to see a crowd at a bar in the winter.. but no excuse for bad drinks and bad service! The White Sangria was made with Sprite and tasted like Koolaid and soda pop. When I asked the bartender what was in it and mentioned it was too sweet, he just dumped out half my drink ( and all the fruit) and added soda water and walked away!! He could have cared less that I was unhappy with the drink and was rude as well. When our party of 5 moved to a table the waitress was attentive and funny. This is a really conflicted review. My fiancé and I went to embargo a couple of weeks ago. First off, it will take you a while to figure out what you want because the menu has a lot of options. The drink I had was good and to be honest the food was delicious. Although, don't go if your super hungry unless your prepared to spend a lot of money. Portions are small, but tasty. The bigger issue and the reason for the 2 star review is the ambiance. We sat in the patio as it was a lovely night in Hyannis, but we were by the door that EVERYONE smokes at!!! Performers, staff, etc. Now I don't know if this is a thing on the cape but people chain smoke ALL night long by this door. Something i don't deal with in Boston. The smokers were rude and like 2 inches from our table...practically leaning on my fiancés chair. Sorry, We don't smoke and we don't want to smell anyone else's cheap cigarettes especially while eating. It was nauseating. I kindly asked out waitress if we could move. I asked for the pretty table with the umbrella. She did move us, but not to that table...she said they don't sit only 2 people at that table. Also she had to remove the ash tray and used butts from the new table. Yuck. Throughout the rest of our meal we could still smell the cigarettes. We just stopped by for after dinner drinks late on a Friday night during the off season. We were not only pleasantly surprised by the trendy atmosphere and sexy vibes, especially for The Cape, but by the bumping dj too! This is a fantastic spot for a weekend night! Others must agree because it was fairly crowded even in October. Cocktails were creative, had fun names and were strong. Priced appropriately also... $12-$14 range. We tasted a few but the "Dave All Night" was a standout. Not sure if it was because it was so tasty or because that's hubby's name :) I wish we had made plans to come for a bite to eat as every dish that passed us looked amazing and tapas are my favorite! We would absolutely come back when in town again! We had a lot of fun dancing and drinking here! Definitely a hip, younger crowd than most places we visited while here in town. Leave the kids at home and do a date night if you can. Can't speak about the day vibe, but at night it's "clubby". Different than most places nearby, which depending on taste, can be a good thing! Embargo was hands down the best meal we ate on the Cape. This place just has a nice vibe to it when you come in, with modern decor, comfy booths and extremely friendly and helpful staff. As for the food, it was the best part. Since it's tapas style, our waitress recommended we order 5 dishes. So many things looked good we ended up ordering 7 dishes! It was also half off the majority of the tapas dishes with the exception of anything that had lobster in it. Good deal! -Sushi dish, the specifics of which I cannot recall, but it was pretty good. -Jumbo Mushrooms stuffed with Manchego & Goat Cheese, baked in Spanish Sherry Sauce, this dish was amazing! Everything cooked perfectly and bursting with unique flavors. Probably my favorite dish of the night! -Lobster Mac & Cheese Baked with Boursin, Parmesan and White Cheddar, another great dish, but very filling. -Braised Short Rib with red wine La Mancha sauce & cool Tomato Escabeche, nice dish, but didn't stand out among the others. -Fish Tostadas, Local Cod , Chili Aioli, Lime Cabbage Pico de Gallo & White Corn Tortilla, this was another spectacular dish. We both obliterated the fish tacos and agreed it was one, if not the best dish of the night. Great flavors, beautiful plating and nice textures. -Baked Oysters Casino with Red & Yellow Peppers, Bacon, Boursin and Parmesan Cheese, if you love baked oysters this is a great dish. My BF cleaned the plate. -Kobe Beef Sliders w/ Crispy Bacon, Pickled Red Onion & Chipotle Ketchup w/Cheese, super delicious. Some of the best sliders we've ever tasted. And as if our gigantic feast wasn't enough, we ordered the Plate of Local Artisan Cheeses to go in order to nicely compliment our wine back at our bed and breakfast. Not that I really expect much of a place like this in Hyannis, but this is one very weird restaurant. The decor and menu are both confused, like they don't know exactly what vibe or cuisine they're looking for. It's a tapas restaurant... and a sushi restaurant/raw bar... and a pizza place... and a cheesy late-night club spot. The ambiance inside is trying to be all of those things at once. We stopped here on the way down to the Outer Cape, and it was a pretty late dinner. We started with a Caesar salad, which was almost inedible for me because it was essentially just mayonnaise slathered all over lettuce. I hate mayo. It's my worst enemy. But in good creamy Caesar dressings, I can't tell it's there. My fiancée likes mayo somewhat, but couldn't even eat much of this salad. Next I had "Kobe" beef sliders. I put that in quotes because I very much doubt that they're actually using Kobe beef. The beef itself was pretty good, but the bun was super dry and there wasn't enough chipotle ketchup to counteract the dryness. We also had a vegetable spring roll, which was fine, but might as well have been frozen from a supermarket. In fact, I'm sure that it was frozen from Sysco or US Foods or whatever supplier they are using. This was a little while ago, so I forget exactly what sushi roll we got, but it was not bad. So I don't usually say anything if I don't have anything nice to say, but I went here on a galloping herd of yelp affection. I would like to spare you the same experience. Enter trendy, hip, modern, tapas on the Cape; I don't know about the big screen fish animation when the Celts are on, but I'll forgive that for now. Start with sangria; the traditional red was tasty, not too sweet, but unfortunately it was not strong enough to redeem the rest of the meal. It was at this point, I asked to have the fan turned off above my table as it was 50 degrees outside with the wind blowing off the north Atlantic. Shortly, my charming server informed me that she could not turn the fan off per the manager. At this point my date and I ordered the following: garlic crostinis, artisan cheeses, stuffed mushrooms, short ribs, escargot, and oysters on the half shell, in no particular order. First: Of the things that we ordered, what would you imagine/desire first? How about, anything but the freakin' short ribs. Braised, served over mashed potatoes with brown gravy, cherry tomato confit, and a crostini, there was just one glaring problem: where is the salt? Think about this dish, you cannot over-season it. Everything in it loves salt. Second: the "crostini" [tostada] came next with a salsa fresca. In addition to being woefully misnamed, the salsa screamed of amateur knife work and lacked acid and, surprise, salt. At this point, the fan is still on, Third: manchego and chèvre stuffed button mushrooms. Pretty dish, great texture, but there mush be a salt shortage on the cape this year. At this point, the fan is STILL ON! Fourth: Beautiful drizzle of balsamic reduction, nice slices of manchego topped with a perfect pat of jam, nice slice of brie, sounds lovely? How can you screw this up? Start with a roll of chèvre shaped a la seagull crap and accompany it with Krispy Saltine Crackers. Yes, the square ones with the holes and perforated edges; I can't make this stuff up. This is now the third bread product we have seen, either of the first two would have sufficed, but I don't want freakin' Saltines unless I'm curled up at home with chicken noodle soup. It was at this point, Chef, you lost me, and I regretted my next order. Fifth: Escargot, not hot, rubbery, clearly sat in the window. At this point, every fan in the restaurant is off, except the one over my freakin' head. My nipples could shuck my... Sixth: Oysters. There was nothing wrong with the oysters or their presentation, but what the heck took 30 minutes to shuck and plate 4 oysters? This should have been the first dish, not the last. And the freakin' fan is still on, somebody get me a mint to get this meal out of my mind. read more

We were on the Cape for a race and decided to check out downtown Hyannis for dinner. This was before Memorial Day so it was pretty slow for a weekend evening and not many of the patios were open yet. We decided to try Embargo because we love small plates/tapas and their menu looked really promising (plus they have happy hour for food!). We asked the waitress for recommendations and ended up going with everything she recommended - we were not disappointed! The food was very fresh and flavorful. My absolute favorite was the Smoked Salmon Bruschetta...that dish alone is worth another trip to the Cape. In addition to having a huge tapas menu, they also have a large martini and wine list. I ended up trying a few new whites and my boyfriend went with a specialty drink. We were really happy with our experience. I've since recommended it to my friends and they're now raving about Embargo as well. read more

Very odd vibe - not very welcoming. The jazz trio is good the drinks are good BUT what is up with the smell commercial cafeteria gas smell and bland food. I am sure people will appreciate the swank decor and low lighting but I cannot recommend the food. We ordered the oysters - they were served warm? in shells that were not the originals and were scrubbed of any flavor and juice - prepared oysters at the cape? I assume they don't get them locally which is so odd. Harry is a good bartender but the others are a bit off and not very friendly. 3 stars for the "clubby" atmosphere inside and for its very non-Capey vibe, but man- that 5 star food makes it all alright. And they serve food late: NOT a common thing for the area!!! Yes, it's the food that drags me here and hey-- the outside tables make the atmosphere a non-issue! After ordering a solid bottle of red, I gorged on a delicious array of tapas! I pretty much wanted to try everything on the menu, but I held myself back and only ordered maybe an eighth of what was on there (it's a big big menu!), but that just means plenty of excuses to come back, right? Fish was the name of the game here. I indulged mainly on fish. Mussels, Gambas al Ajillo (garlic shrimp), and Ahi Tuna sliders- oh my!!! We also feasted on the avocado wedges (holy crap, such a simple thing but WOW amazing!!!) and the lamb meatballs. Not one these dishes disappointed me. Yum yum YUM from start to finish. Go for the food and make your own atmosphere! There's nothing more I love than appetizers and dessert, so Embargo was the place for me. We got a good variety, including the lobster mac & cheese, lobster quahog, fish tacos, pulled pork carnitas tacos and oysters on the half shell. Their drinks were good, although my husband's first mojito was VERY sweet. Our waiter was very nice, if not a bit nervous/timid it seemed. They had live jazz which made it hard to hear, but even without the music it's a pretty loud place. Make reservations as it was PACKED at 8pm on Saturday. The first time I came here, I remember the place being pretty good. So when I came the second time I was surprised that it wasn't as good as I remembered. We sat at the bar and when given menus the bartender did not tell us that something was out or something has changed. So when I went to order a flat bread pizza she said oh we are out. Well that was the only thing I wanted and liked on the menu. So I was annoyed she didn't mention it at first. So we ordered some small plates instead. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, which were gross and tasted like they were made 4 days ago or maybe they were frozen. The braised beef short rib on potato was not hot. My husband got sushi, which I don't eat but he said it was ok. Everything came out within 7 minutes or us ordering it. so I think it was all microwaved or something. The food was terrible and I wasn't impressed the second time. I don't think I would come back to eat. Maybe just have drinks. They do have live music there and the set up inside is nice though. They also have outdoor seating. If you are on vacation there are other places to eat though. read more

My boyfriend and I adore tapas restaurants. I do a lot of restaurant reviewing, so whenever we travel we scour the local restaurants listing to find a place to enjoy good food and a few coctails. It didn't take long for us to decide on Embargo. They open at 3:30, then happy hour (which includes half price tapas) runs from 4-6. Our experience was as such: We arrived at 4:30 and stayed until 6. We each ordered a coctail: the "Elvis Lives" and a Classic Manhatten. The coctails were fantastic (and the menu was extensive). Then we ordered the Lamb Meatballs, the Bacon Wrapped Scallops, and the Lobster & Chouriso Stuffed Quahog. I was underwhlmed with the flavors offered in these dishes, which is an experience I don't find often in food. I was alsovery put off by our waitress who was clearly annoyed with us. She stopped by our table at least a dozen times to offer my boyfriend another drink, which he decined after the first one and each time since then. We both already had coctails and we were about to drive over an hour home after being in the sun all day. We would have stayed and ordered more tapas except by that time we were both too uncomfortable as she seemed too annoyed that we were not ordering enough. Another point that I would bring up was that, athough we arrived in time for happy hour, we only recieved half price on one of the tapas we ordered. I thought that odd. When I went back on the website, I saw the disclaimer that says items marked with an asterisk are not applicable for half price on Tuesdays. We dined on a Wednesday and there was no such disclaimer on the printed menu because my boyfriend and I were scouring the print to find out exactly what the asterisks mean. After finding nothing to answer our question, we assumed that meant the food was spicy. My take on this place was that the food was okay, it's a little cheaper than most of the restaurants in the area, the food is really not children friendly, the bar is exceptional, and the patio area is quite nice if it's not scortching hot outside. read more

My boyfriend and I went here last Saturday and oh my god - this was maybe one of our favorite meals together. It was busy but there was barely even a wait. The host was attentive and checked in with us to make sure the table we got was ok with us as it was tucked away. Not a problem with us! Our server Sarah was phenomenal. My boyfriend has food allergies and she made sure to repeat everything back to us, she was managing a huge section and even still we barely had to wait. Their menu is fabulous, this was my first tapas experience and absolutely every dish was delicious. I really couldn't say anything negative. I'm not sure if it was a manager or a chef, but a man checked in with us several times to see how everything was. The lamb lollipop and bacon wrapped scallops were superb. Went to this bar Memorial day weekend and opened up a tab. When attempting to close my tab, the bartender/manager had told me that the tab had been closed already, which was not true. Accusing me of being "too drunk" and "too young" to understand the process of closing out a tab. When speaking to the RUDE owner, he ripped the receipt out of my hand and accused me of wanting to steal his money. I told him that I wanted to clarify why my tab had been closed without my permission. When checking my CC the next day, four charges were made that night and whomever closed my tab put an extra $10 for tip. This place runs an extremely shady business, do not trust this bar! The employees are extremely rude. There are other places in the area that are a lot more trustworthy than this place. read more

My mom and I went to Embargo last night for dinner before a concert at the Cape Cod Melody Tent and were expecting great food, service and most of all oysters based on everything that we read about it, both on yelp and other places. When we arrived around 6pm there were two tables available in their outdoor dining area - one a two top and one a four top. We were told though we were the only ones there getting a table that we could only have the two top which was in a less desirable portion of the outdoor area because you need at least three people to grab the four top table. Fair enough right? Well we are then seated next to a couple that is sitting at a four top which contradicted all reason the host provided, not cool, but whatever we were hungry and got over it immediately. Next came the waiting game to see if anyone would come to serve us. We experienced many waitresses walk by us and help other patrons but for some reason we were neglected. Finally after two or three forays past our table over a span of 10 minutes we were greeted, if you call it that. No name given and noticeably less vigor than the same waitress had shown the multiple tables she was serving prior to greeting us. We immediately ordered oysters knowing we were hungry and that the onslaught of the $1 oyster happy hour had ended so we would be in good shape to get our dozen relatively quickly. The reality was that our oysters took longer than one would think possible to shuck 100 oysters let alone 12. Our drinks came with no mention of timing on the oysters which was fine and at the same time we ordered tapas. After the order was placed we didn't get as much as a glance our way, but about 20 minutes later our scallop tapa arrived, again with no mention of the oysters. We had to ask her if the oysters had been rung in as it was now about 30 minutes after we ordered them and no oysters were seen. The scallops were absolutely amazing! They were perfectly seared atop parmesan truffle basmati rice with honey drizzle. Looking back I'm so glad this came first, and you'll see why in a second. We cleaned the scallop plate and just as that was done our oysters finally came out, and so did our Kobe beef sliders. When the oysters were set on the table they looked like they had been mutilated. The normally beautiful plump oyster meat was all cut up and shredded by what I think was an attempt to shuck and detach them from the shell. Needless to say not an appetizing site. Then when I was about to try my first one, it started moving! At the top of the oyster shell masked by the shredded oyster meat was a reddish figure that's legs we're trying to break free. There was a live crab in the oyster! I'm not a skittish person especially when it comes to food but when Mr. Crab was a short leap from my tongue, my stomach turned. I told the waitress of the little critter and in true fashion, she laughed. And then said I'll get an extra one. Let's take a step back here, there is a live animal in my food and there is no concern, no apologizing, but there's laughter. And to clarify its not extra since I won't be having the crab laden bivalve. To end this story that I guess has become more of a rant, we didn't even finish the oysters because they were so disturbing to look at let alone slurp down - besides the fact they tasted off, we're gray and extremely gritty. We ate our mediocre sliders and were done. My recommendation is if you are in Hyannis looking for oysters, Embargo isn't the best option. At least last night it wasn't. This is easily the best Tapas place in America. I have been to Spain- I've had good Tapas. This restaurant has GREAT tapas! The place gets busy, so make a reservation or get there early! It's worth it to wait though as you won't get food this good in many places (anywhere!). The lamb lollipops are my favorite ($3 a pop). The edamame is also delicious! The sangria is amazing!!! I'm a huge fan of the sparkling sangria and white sangria. So wonderful tasty and fantastic! Best I've ever had! The atmosphere is palpable in a great way. The place is hectic, but has a nice vibe. The wait staff is wonderful and very attentive! Yes, it's pricey, but you most certainly get what you pay for and so much more. read more

I'm a fan of Embargo and a frequent customer. Every time I go I order my favorites and different things to try: Here's the list: - Truffle and parmesan frites (ALWAYS get them) - Sushi - Braised Short Rib with La Mancha sauce, cool Tomato Fresca & Mashed Potato - Flatbread Pizza - Lobster Mac and Cheese Service is really good. It's also a club, more like a lounge after 10PM. I've stayed later many times. It really depends on who the DJ is. So can't comment on that. Some nights are good, some nights are not. read more
