Our waiter was great, super friendly, super knowledgeable and had the bartender craft me a special birthday cocktail. I got the oyster app and the sweet tea brined pork tenderloin. Both were addictively good. For dessert, I had the s'mores pie, which was surprisingly good. Fudgy creamy goodness with a nice texture from the graham cracker crust. I really love the roasted marshmallow fluff on top and they brought it with a candle for my birthday. I really appreciated that extra touch along with the FREE champagne for the table. We came here with my sister and her husband for a belated Valentine's Day dinner. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess. We decided to have a drink at the bar. I ordered a lemon drop martini. My drink was made well and was cold. When we were seated, we looked over the menu. There menu hasn't really changed too much. We opted to start with fried pickles and split a wedge salad. My sister and her husband each had a salad. My sister had the burata and her husband had the ranch. Our apps/salads came out quickly. The wedge salad was cool and crisp. I wish it had more pieces of bacon, the bacon looked a bit sparse. The fried pickles were great. I loved the light crisp batter on them and the ranch dip had a bit of a kick to it. For dinner I got the braised short ribs, my husband and brother in law both got the chimichurri steak, and my sister got the pork schnitzel. I've been looking forward to the braised short ribs all week. I was a bit disappointed that when I bit in, it appeared to be pretty bland. Normally when I get this meal it's bursting with flavor. My husband and BIL enjoyed their steaks. My sister enjoyed her schnitzel, but said the pork could have been a bit thinner. We ended the meal with their skillet cookie. Typically the cookie comes out piping hot, but on this occassion, while the skillet was hot, the cookie wasn't. We'll give them another shot, but I was a bit disappointed this time around. read more

I'll go ahead and admit that I did the "happy food dance" at the table. And I'd do it again! lol The restaurant itself overall is well situated with inside and outside seating, along with a full well-stocked bar. Each time I've been there the staff I've been very attentive and very helpful. I previously had another favorite located in the St. Johns town center, but I think this is my new go-to, date-night, and birthday-dinner favorite. The food... I think they have great portions. Not too big not too small. Great size for a shared appetizer, dinner and a light dessert. The only thing I've ever questioned here was the cornbread. The second time I got it it was a little overcooked. But he quickly took it back and brought out another, which was about two minutes overdone but definitely edible, though not as good as the first time. But please, don't let that stop you from going. Once again, we had a spectacular date night at Ember and Iron. It truly offers the best bang for your buck when you're craving a great steak dinner. One thing I really appreciate is how, unlike many restaurants, they've narrowed their menu to a smaller selection of entrees and clearly focused on perfecting each one. The attention to detail really showed in the Braised Short Rib, where all the flavors came together in a wonderfully harmonious dish. While it's usually served with grits, I personally prefer pairing it with mashed potatoes. It's a small swap, but one that makes the dish even better for me. Beyond the food, the service elevated the entire experience. Our server, Joshua, went the extra mile to make our date night feel special and was extremely knowledgeable about the entire menu. To round things out, the cocktails were fantastic, and I would absolutely recommend the Gingerbread Old Fashioned. Overall, I'd say this place has surely become a regular spot for us and will continue to stay in our date night rotation. read more

My daughter treated me to an early Mother's Day dinner a couple of weeks ago. We chose here because she had never been and wanted to try it. We had reservations and were promptly seated. You can definitely smell the wood-fire grill but it's not overwhelming at all. The fried Brussels sprouts with bacon jam is normally a side dish however we ordered it as an appetizer. We both enjoyed it, especially that bacon jam :). To save room for dessert, we shared the ribeye. There's a $4 charge for splitting a meal which is reasonable since they give you both full servings of the sides. Even sharing the meal we had leftovers. The ribeye was finished with an herb butter and was very tender and tasty. The crispy garlic parmesan potatoes were also delicious. They are baked then slightly smashed then quickly fried in beef tallow...yummm. We ended our meal very much enjoying every last bite of the skillet chocolate chip cookie. To top it all our sever was amazing. Will definitely go back to try the chimichurri steak. read more

The server Daniel that we had was over the top, checking on us very frequently, super friendly and was very knowledgeable on the menu. The hostess was also very friendly and welcoming. As well as the manager who came to our table to ask how everything was. The food left us speechless. The ribeye was by far the best I have ever had. The shrimp and grits had such an amazing flavor. We came for my husband's birthday dinner and had a lovely time. Our server Nina was very sweet, helpful, and knowledgeable. We had the cornbread with pepper jelly and butter, and the hummus for apps. Both were delicious. My husband had the Scottish salmon with jasmine rice; both were perfect. The rice may be the best we've ever tasted. My beet and goat cheese salad was excellent and the crab cakes were delicious. They brought us champagne in flutes for his birthday. Second time dining here and it did not disappoint. We made reservations for the patio and it was a great spot for a quiet dinner without having to "yell" over the noise to have a conversation. Our server (I can't believe I don't remember her name!) was absolutely amazing! She was over-the-top professional, pleasant, and efficient with everything. She made great suggestions and checked in often. Our food was all hot and looked amazing. We started with the cowboy fries which were not my favorite. They weren't bad, but I wouldn't order again. I chose the crispy chicken thigh sandwich which made me forget all about the mediocre starter. The chicken was perfectly fried and super tender but the sauce and house made pickles made the sandwich. My husband got the lamb chop special which was also good (he said my sandwich was better). We skipped dessert but they had multiple options that sounded delicious. We did not have cocktails but the ones we saw served at nearby tables were pretty impressive. I was excited by the menu but I don't think the flavors delivered the way I expected. My crab cake Benedict was flavored decently. The side salad didn't really have any dressing on it. I got the side crispy garlic Parmesan potatoes and they were kind of burnt and again not what we expected, they didn't have much flavor and they were just whole large potatoes that were fried and barely seasoned. My mimosa was good. My friends thought their entrees were also ok overall. I'd give them a 3.5 for our experience today. I would go back to try their dinner to see if it's any better. I was on a ride up into Jacksonville and then back home, a bit of a loop just to see some things. Heading back, I took a non-traditional route. Unfortunately, it was starting to rain, and a good sized thunderstorm was coming through, so I started scouting for a place to pull over and perhaps grab a bite to eat. Thus, I found Ember & Iron. Frankly, as I approached the place, I was thinking that it was going to be a steakhouse of some sort. Not so. The menu is more along the lines of a high-end sports bar, aiming for the diner that wants to explore some different tastes in classic dishes. It can be hit or miss with that sort of thing, obviously. Sometimes you just don't want to mess about with a classic dish and its flavour profile. Since I was solo, and this was a Sunday afternoon, the place was busy with the church crowd, so I opted for a seat at the bar as that is always first-come first-serve. I went over the menu thoroughly, and even took a quick walk around the floor to look at some of the things that people were eating to see if there was anything that leapt out at me as being "Get This!" Eventually I opted for the beef carpaccio for an appetizer and the Fish and Chips for my main. The carpaccio was excellent, and would also make a great sharing dish for two. The fish and chips? Well, it was acceptable, but the portion size was on the small side for the expense. A single fillet on a bed of mid-level fries and a couple of dipping sauces was kind of sad. Not even any garnish to make the plate pop. The dish really needs work, considering the other dishes that I was seeing. Frankly, this is not a place that I would be intentionally going back to. If I were passing through the area again at the right time, and I had already been to other places to try them out, I would probably go back. read more

We came here being new to the area looking for our new *steak* place. We ordered 2 old fashioned as this seems to be their signature drink. My husband was smoked and mine was not. This was one of the best old fashions I had had in a long time. The tables were set up as a long bench on one side then tables next to each other, so not the best ambiance. I can not remember if the tables were a better option. Our waitress was quick and nice. She asked if we had ever been there and I told her no and asked about their appetizers. She recommended the corn bread. I was a bit taken back by that as I never ordered corn bread as an app, nor did I find corn bread something you would opt for but we tried it and I am glad we did. It was service in its own cast iron pan with (honey?) butter and a pepper jelly. Honestly, I never knew corn bread could be so good. Now to our dinner. I ordered Filet Mignon (MR) which came with a potato patty, my husband ordered a Ribeye (R) and it came with French fries (frites) Our food came out and my filet mignon was super rare. I cut it open and it was rarer than my husbands. I sent it back for more fire, but kept the potatoes patty and asparagus. There was a gruyere cheese sauce on the plate which was a little smokey tasting. The asparagus ends should have been trimmed as I had to spit it out due to it being woody / stalky, but after that I only ate the middles to tip of asparagus. The Potato patty was a bit overdone as well. Finally they bring out my filet mignon and I had to send it back yet again as it was still raw in the middle. The manager came over and discounted my steak, and I just took it home. read more

My friends have been raving about this place for years, so I finally took the plunge. The customer service is bar none! As soon as I walked in I felt welcomed and knew eating there would be a dining experience. We came for late lunch--honestly, the plan was to eat brunch, but I digress. Friends ordered some wontons and since I was starving I popped one in my mouth. I want to believe the wontons were made on site, because they were so flaky and crispy giving an empanada vibe. Of course I didn't know what I wanted, while everyone else memorized the menu. I finally settled on the French toast -- only for the server to come back and say, "we're all out", which is code for "ma'am did you think there would be French toast at 2:30" :) I decided to get the E & I standard, you can't go wrong with bacon, eggs and roasted potatoes. The portions are huge, just look at the pics of the Shakshuka and burger. The only thing left to say is, save me a seat at the bar. This might be my new Cheers! This was my third visit and first time for brunch. This was for my mom's bday and was pretty nice overall. If you've ever read a brunch or brekky review you know I'm always looking for the next great French toast. The day I went - the French toast didn't turn out right so it wasn't available. I appreciated the manager coming out to explain. Instead I went with the E&I standard because grilled vegetable hash sounded amazing - with eggs and bacon of course. But it came out with garlic? Potatoes. They were good but not what I was looking for. Thwarted at every turn lol. The bacon and eggs were pretty standard. The birthday girl ordered waffle tots and was pleased as punch! There was SO MUCH SALMON on this waffle made from tater tots and it was very tasty (as is customary I had to quality test the food). The whipped soubise was an excellent touch. Would recommend for sure. We also shared a little plate of croissant beignets. More than decent. A lovely little sweet treat to make up for missing out on French toast. And what is brunch without a nice cup of coffee? It warmed my soul on a chilly day that's for sure. Not my favorite ever, but good. While I appreciated the manager making it out to our table to discuss the French toast alternatives, our server was a little less than attentive. And we had to wave her or the manager down several times - for water and the check. It wasn't very busy (I have seen it crazy packed for dinner!) I do appreciate this place overall and the food is pretty good. But each time I've gone there has been some type of challenge (out of food, cold food, wrong food, missing server). Nothing major - and they've been able to fix it, but it's enough for me to not be thrilled to go back unless someone requests, as this time, for a birthday or something. read more

The place seemed pretty empty as I entered which was a plus for us. I decided the bar had the most happening and sat to receive a quick glass of water being presented before me. Our sweet bartender was a joy and had my order of cornbread and a side of black eyed peas in and out quickly. My order surely stated I was a true southern gal and couldn't wait to mix them up and enjoy. My dessert was a espresso martini which I watched being made with great care. 3 expresso beans carefully placed in the middle and presented with poise and awe, the smell alone woke up my senses. Visiting the area and ready about this place. I like the idea of everything made fresh from scratch daily. The atmosphere was very inviting and service was of what I would call top-notch. We all enjoyed the appretizers ( ornbread/brussel sprouts). The meals my three friends had were what they called "top notch". Least enjoyable was my fish and chips. I had expected English Fish & Chips but these were two heavily battered pieces that didn't wow me. My fault for not asking more questions. I look forward to going back when I get a chance. read more

Dinner with girlfriends- Seated promptly for our res. Server came right over & said she'd be right back with waters. She did. Mine tasted like fish had been swimming in my glass. My friends didn't taste it. I mentioned it to the server & she said she tastes it too & 1 out of 4 customers say the same. To me it was undrinkable - yuck! My suggestion to the restaurant is get a water filtration system or get a new one, and ice too. Onto the meal- shared some lovely bubbly rose to start with some cornbread. It was just the right size ( small skillet) but a little over done. My main course was an appetizer order of crab cakes. Two medium size cakes were enough for me for dinner. They were good but not outstanding. I also had a wedge salad with blue cheese. It was good, pretty basic. One friend had a salad with beets & added shrimp as her protein. It was a large salad & she enjoyed it. Next my 3 rd friend went with the special which was elk. I'm not sure how much they charged for it but either way it was 2 tiny slices of meat. It looked beautiful. She said it was delicious. It reminded me of the old days of nouvelle cuisine when you left the restaurant starving after eating a tiny but lovely looking dish. He said it tasted good, but the size of the leg he received was the size of a small child's fist. $38 for the tiniest portion of protein and the rest sides? One word: PHENOMENAL! This place is my new favorite, hands down 5 starts. Visited as part of yelp's Top places to drink and I am so grateful I did. We went on Saturday afternoon as soon as they opened, I was surprised to see a line of people waiting to get in, we did not have reservations but were greeted and seated immediately. Our server, was so nice, very helpful, told us all about the new fall cocktail menu and offered several recommendations. We stared with the apple pie old fashioned which was so yummy and the fall in Florida cocktail. The restaurant general manager David, stopped by our table and we had a wonderful conversation about cocktails and tequila, good times! We ordered tapas style as were super hungry and I cannot praise this place anymore. Food was amazing, we sampled the skillet corn bread which came with spicy strawberry jelly and butter, oh my! Also the crab and shrimp salad, something I've never had before and it was delicious, super fresh and flavorful. Also enjoyed the hummus and ordered the buttermilk chicken and the branzino roasted whole fish, with grits (my favorite), roasted veggies, okra and crispy potatoes. Allí can say it was a complete food coma but I just couldn't stop eating, everything's as super tasty. I have been to Ember & Iron several times over the years and have always enjoyed dining there. I do remember it can get quite loud when they are busy (understandably so). So to avoid that, we typically go during off peak time so it's a nice quiet ambiance. The service has always been prompt and friendly. As for the food, I really enjoy their cornbread in a skillet (everything is better in a skillet) and their pork chop dish. In fact, I like them so much that it prevents me from trying their other dishes. Husband tried various other dishes but always commented that next time it's his turn to order the pork chop. This is a restaurant that I may not be going every week, but when I want a nice chill place (again off peak hours), great service and good food, it pop's up in my mind. read more
