My favorite place where no trip is complete unless I eat here. The whole crew here have become friends over the year, making it my Cheers walking thru the front doors. Chef/owner Brian and Chef Dave always bring the best highlighting local produce and seasonal specialities that change monthly. All my birthdays have been celebrated here, and you can always count on leaving with the feeling it was your birthday. We have been going to Ember since they opened in 2014. I would say we dine at Ember 2 to 3 times a year and in the past 11 years maybe a total of 25-30 visits. This was the first time I wasn't 100% satisfied. I took my wife and daughter for an early valentines dinner on the 12th of February. We had reservations for the patio and our server Riley showed up and was very attentive and friendly. We have never been dissatisfied with the service, and while the menu is pricey we understand you are supposed to get what you pay for... but this time we didn't. The appetizers (Insalta Tricolore, and Salmon Crudo) were fabulous... the three of us shared and each enjoyed them immesely. The problem was the entrees. My wife's favorite meal (she gets it almost every time) is the Ribeye. For $66 her steak was not cooked the way she asked for it. She asked for medium rare and it was clearly inbetween medium and medium-well. And if you're paying that much money for a steak there shouldn't be a thick line of gristle going down the middle of the steak. It was a poor cut and poorly prepared. It should have been better for the amount of money we paid for it. I got the 50 layer lasagna which is always a hit with me but this time the pasta was too al dente and the cheese was overcooked--I had to use my knife cut through the cheese topping. Fortunately the flavor was still good and I enjoyed it in spite of it being sub par compared to past experiences. My daughter had the swordfish and she liked it. I tried a bite of it and it tasted a little overcooked to me. The edges were seared too long which made their texture a little rubbery--overall still good flavor. It made us think the chefs were having a bad night--which is weird because they were not that busy on a Thursday night. The desserts are as always OUTSTANDING. We ordered the toasted marshamallow ice cream cocoa cake and the orange creme brulee (my favorite). Their desserts have never disapointed. We only had tea, water, and arnold palmers for drinks--so nothing really to complain about in that area. I am a decent tipper if service is good and I gave Riley $50 on a $235 bill. I just feel that if I am spending $80 per person on a meal--the food quality should have been better. It usually is but something was off that night. One of the best steaks I have had on the central coast. I'd pick this over other steakhouses in the area. I had the 14oz Ribeye Steak with Chimichuri and Potato Gratin. We got the Grilled Filet Mignon, Pizza Bianco, and to finish it off the Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream Cocoa Cake! The Filet Mignon was great, the broccolini and brasero roasted potato gratin paired exceptionally well with the steak. However I did not think the bleu cheese butter or cauliflower tasted good with the steak. I am not a fan of bleu cheese and the cauliflower was bland. I was very impressed with the pizza, everything paired so well on it and had a perfect crisp undercarriage. Definitely recommend. The dessert was also very good I only got in one bite before it was finished though... everything here was excellent even the service. The server we had was amazing and kind, she made sure we had everything to our liking. This place is fine dining, with dark ambient lighting all around. Was planning my boyfriends birthday dinner and made advanced reservations for a Thursday evening . Very bad communication with host. I was asking if they can accommodate sitting us in a more secluded spot since with Covid the tent they had looked a bit crowded with people. Not sure why they don't incorporate the space for the outdoor patio which looked really nice and would spread everyone out . The host I talked to was so rude and told me that if they had a walk up they'd give them the table which didn't make any sense because if I'm making a reservation way in advance I would expect the restaurant to honor my request. The host proceeded to argue with me over the phone and eventually hung up. So rude. 0 stars for the bad service from host. Definitely needs training and needs to set a better tone for the whole experience. Someone else reached out to me saying they can accommodate. When we got their for dinner, they sat us in the middle of the tent that was packed with a lot of people and I was very upset. Not what I was expecting since I communicated to them I wanted a more secluded spot. The host again said " let me go check " . She never came back the whole time we had dinner which was very upsetting . We eventually just said " F it & tried to enjoy our evening". I would have to say the food was great. But the whole experience itself was bad. Luckily the food made up for the horrible experience. But that doesn't excuse them for the horrible treatment we got. Despite the bumpy start to our dinner we really enjoyed the food .Our favorites were the crispy southern fried quail , 50 layer lasagna verde, & ribeye steak . The quail had a lot of flavor and it was super crunchy and moist. I don't like pasta much so I was surprised at how good the lasagna was. It was so pillowy soft and went great with the ribeye. My boyfriend loved the chimichurri sauce. The best thing of the night that blew my mind was the toasted Marshmallow icecream cake. It was super unique and I loved the different textures and creaminess of the marshmallow with the warm cake & cold ice cream. Seriously amazing. The food made the night. Let me begin, Yelp review Readers, by stating that Ember in A.G. is a dining experience you do not want to miss! A well established restaurant that has already received a plethora of accolades and this review, much to my delight, will follow suit. The Restaurant itself, is tucked into a corner lot off of Grande Ave in Arroyo Grande. Their parking lot is sufficient, so even if they are busy, with "turn over" you shouldn't have a problem finding a parking space. Approaching the venue, and ultimately being aware of the praises of Ember, I felt my anticipation heighten. Greeted by many as we entered, our party of 4, was seated immediately. The interior of Ember is an open concept with an open Kitchen (the huge Pizza Oven, and an "open fire"Grill will draw your attention), several dining areas surrounding the Bar and on an elevated floor towards the back. A very attractive enclosed Wine Room (well stocked) made me curious enough to draw me towards it after being seated...go have a look, it's amazing. Our Server for the evening, Bill, presented with a welcoming SMILE and Bread Service for the table. I must say...Bill's service for the entire evening was SPOT ON! Kudos Bill, we so enjoyed and appreciated your professionalism, warmth and humor! (Remember, the BRICK is NOT Italian!) The Bread was fresh and warm. To start we ordered several Cocktails: Spice Trade (4/5) (interesting enough, I would highly recommend...a unique taste), White Russian/Tall with heavy Cream (5/5) ( Really Yummy), Mind Haze/Hazy IPA on Tap (4.5/5). More Bread Service...again, warm, nice "sour" tang (delicious). Our chosen Appetizers: Wood Oven Roasted Monterey Bay Squid (4.5/5)...amazingly delicious! Southern Fried Green Tomatoes and White Shrimp Salad (5/5)...a must order! (If returning, I would order 2 of these for a party of 4.) Yes...it's that fabulous! Gnocchi, a "Special off Menu" item but do not recall the exact name of dish (4/5). The consensus here was that the Gnocchi were a bit "heavier" than expected, for the rest of the party, but I very much enjoyed them as served. After finishing...our plates were collected and our Mains were immediately served. Mains ordered: 6 Cheese and Bacon w/Blue Cheese Cream Sauce Wood Fired Pizza (4/5), Southern California Swordfish from the Wood Oven (4/5) and finally, Grilled 14oz Ribeye Steak - Medium Rare (5/5). This was "perfection on a plate"! A must try! On a side note, two of the most pleasing things I observed during the meal...1) Chef Adam working his MAGIC in the Open Kitchen and 2) Chef David "at the pass" making sure the quality of all dishes sent to the tables were up to Ember Standard! God I love that. Thank-you gentlemen...well done! The Mains were well portioned and leftovers were taken home. Once the dishes were again cleared, we ordered our Desserts. We all shared a Seared Carrot Cake w/ Brûléed Meringue and Roasted Red Beet Gelato (5/5), a must try (really outstanding) and the Coffee and Dark Chocolate Trifle w/ Pistachio Biscotti (5/5). As we sat enjoying our final after dinner Drinks: an Irish Coffee (4/5) and an Espresso Martini (5/5)...again, a must try (really fabulous w/ the most interesting background tale regarding the 3 Coffee Bean accoutrements on top as told by Bill our Server) , reflecting back on the total dining experience...all we could do was smile. The service here was terrible and the food just ok. For $75 a person, the experience was horrible. Took half an hour to get water and our order taken. Our waitress was pretty rude, and wouldn't ask the chef to make sure my allergies were accounted for on a specific dish. Told me she was "sure it was fine." She then joked and asked if I was going to anaphylactic shock yet later in the evening. Throughout the evening just found it difficult to get refills if water and got a sense that she thought we wouldn't tip enough (as didn't order wine) so she didn't bother. The food itself was not good, generally. The fish was very dry and without flavor. They made it without sauce to protect from my allergies but refused to put anything else on it, even like butter or something. The steak was also pretty flavorless, as other reviewers have said. Desserts were terrible, we didn't even finish them. The cake was super dry and hard. The brûlée tasted bland. We paid but the server was pretty nonexistent so we just left. Service 1/5: our main beef w Ember was the service. Not sure what our server's name even was...not sure if she introduced herself. But she didn't seem to take my husband's allergy seriously and seemed very reluctant to double check w the chef- "the chef made it sound like he can have anything but the soup". At our insistence, she double checked and found that no, he could not have most of the 2nd course dishes. The winter risotto was a definite no and the filet mignon + sole are ok if we got it without the sauce. She later came by and joked, "anyone have anaphylaxis yet?" Not sure if it was meant to be lighthearted, but made us feel she was trivializing his allergies. Why bother asking about allergies if you're just going to downplay them? We get that it may be a pain in the ass for the restaurants to accomodate food allergies, but it is also not a picnic for those with the allergies. Further, at a high end restaurant charging $75pp, we at least expect to not go home with an upset stomach, diarrhea & vomiting, which would happen if my husband ingests allium. To us, restaurants that take us seriously automatically get a better opinion and those that don't seem to give a crap are automatically a "do not return". Price: $75pp ($10 extra for filet mignon). Felt food quality and service wasn't worth $75...more like $50pp or less. Food 4/5: the maine lobster salad was delicious 5/5. Hubby got the artichoke which he loved, I felt was ok, like 4/5. We wanted to try a variety of items to really try it out, so we ordered the Albacore starter, Fried Green Tomatos and Shrimp Starter, Filet mignon, and the Halibut. Albacore - 10/10 - 100% have to try this dish, absolutely amazing, melts in your mouth! The sauces and flavors were incredible. FGT with Shrimp - 7/10 - flavors were wonderful and paired nicely with the combinations on the plate . The shrimp were delicious, very zesty / citrusy - would order again but not the star of the show.. Filet - 7/10 - the filet we could've ordered medium rare in stead of medium, but all in all, it was a delicous plate. The broccoli and potatoes were okay, but they deffinately needed the Filet pairing to make them stand out. Halibut - 8/10 - Halibut melts in your mouth! This place came highly recommended by our friends who frequent Ember anytime they're in town. Everything about our time here was amazing! Upon arriving we were greeted by the hosting staff. They were very welcoming and friendly. We were seated promptly, with a reservation of course. Which I highly recommend you make one because as soon as the doors open the seats are full! Our waiter was very pleasant and knew the menu well. We ordered drinks and I had asked for mine to be made a specific way... ( lemon drop- extra sour) and it was perfectly made! Kudos to the bartender in knowing exactly what I wanted this to taste like. The husband went with an old fashioned and said it was one of the best he'd had. On to the entrees. Definitely had to order the 50 layer lasagne because why not?! Nice freshly made thin sheets of pasta layered with a delicious bolognese tomato sugo and creamy prosciutto béchamel sauce. It sounds rich, but because the pasta is so thin it isn't. I ate the entire thing and I NEVER finish my entree at dinner (always saving room for dessert) but I could not stop eating it. Also got the New York steak which came with broccolini and scalloped potatoes, the husband loved it. We had to end the meal with the cocoa cake. This and the lasagne were the highlight of the meal. And it was a bit dark in there but it's great for a romantic setting and celebrating an anniversary, birthday, Valentine's Day, or anything sexy like that. me and my bf had some beer (for him) and wine for me. My husband got the potato and blue cheese pizza and said the dough was good but the toppings were meh. It needed more flavor. I got the half chicken and polenta and it was OK. The chicken was cooked really well but the veggies and polenta needed more flavor as well. The wine and cocktails were really great. The four of us went to Ember to celebrate a 50th birthday party. We just finished dinner and wanted to enjoy dessert when the waiter told us our 90 minutes was up and essentially we would not have had time to eat dessert or coffee or drinks. This was a horrible way to end that particular dinner. This place is such a hidden gem. Came on a Friday without reservations but got seated right away for 2. Every single thing we had was absolutely mouth watering. They have an incredible seasonal farm to table menu and the most friendly staff. My absolute favorite dish was the 50 layer lasagna. You have to get it, it is so light and fluffy but savory and delicious. We also had the stuffed quail special to start which came in an incredible sauce with farro and homemade fluffy croutons. Today was my daughter's 17th birthday. We're here for the Labor Day weekend. This restaurant was recently bought in 2024 and there's new owner(s) and chef. So all those other stars/comments may not be accurate. I also think the Michelin guides have lost their taste in both sense and decorum. I've been here 4 times and honestly the food is mediocre at best. The lasagne is good but not Michelin recommended good. Costco version is still a bit better and I'm not insulting Costco. His pastas come out one minute before al dente and 4 minutes past cooked. It's either soggy or chewy and crunchy.. and they're pizza , that's not artesian dough, just haven't had round table since I was 9 years old but round table is way better. and their drinks? What good bartender uses simple syrup? I like rosemary but who likes to drink a whole rosemary bush in your martini?How can they even be Michelin recommended? The marshmallow dessert is at least a Michelin recommended. Fried green tomatoes well it's fried and has a corn meal breading, that's about it. Now about the service.. I run a little past my family since my husband made the reservations and I wanted to ask the hostess to quickly ask our waiter/waitress if he/she can get a marshmallow dessert with candle for my daughter at the end of the meal. She nods and then they start to argue about our table. I heard one hostess say just stick a chair at the end. If there's one thing that's my pet peeve is for a place like this, where we will easy spend $400-500 , they stick 5 people in 4 person table. My husband is 5' 10" 259 lbs and my daughters are 14-18 years old not small and tiny; I told them I would not like that and we agree on a table. Now because of the pandemic I'd like to empathize, but will all the money and taxes we spend I'm just tired especially for this type of restaurant . We're not going to Chipotle which is better in my mind or my cooking and I cook great it just takes effort and time. So we get seated and the waitress asked us about drinks and I told her I'd like something with vodka served up like a martini but with a little flavor and not sweet. She sarcastically states well a martini is not sweet. I decide to engage and I said to come back to me and I would order later. She continued to be rude and sarcastic through the night and all I do is ignore her. I even order my wine from another waiter kindly lying that mine seems really busy and if he didn't mind. She hasn't started to take our order but rather than pause and come back while appetizers were getting cold she forces us to order. She then told us she would leave a menu there so we can order dessert. We just ordered our entrees mind you and our table really isn't that big and seems so tacky to have a menu laying around. What is this Dennys? I said there's no need to leave the menu. But she makes another snarky comment and abruptly leaves. So at this point, I go to Jesse the supposedly new owner as I saw him there(we had met him the last time we were there I July and told he was the new owner). I tell him what happened and he basically said he wasn't there to hear it. Ok fine so I said please make sure she knows about the marshmallow dessert and a candle . He says they have candles and would take care of it. We start to finally enjoy our meal and forget about her rudeness especially she doesn't go to our table pretty much rest of the meal. Around the time we were finishing our entrees, I merely told her that I told Jesse that I ordered a marshmallow dessert with a candle for my daughter. And that point she tells me that I'm condescending and she's not. WTF why bring anything up? Even if she thought I was rude in the begging why ruin the end of the dinner for a 17 year old. I've been treated well by the cuisine I've had in the SLO/Pismo area and Ember really follows suit. I found out they have 2 seatings per evening. An early seating and a later seating. If you are trying to have a longer than 90 min dinner, def choose the second seating as the first there will be a soft time limit. Check in with the server and they will let you order a drink and bring it to you while you wait for your table. I ordered the Purple Haze and it was really nice. I hat the tuna crudo as my late lunch had tied up some space in my stomach. It was FANTASTIC. I abstained from desert so I can't make any recommendations there but I will say if you choose to eat at Ember, you're probably gonna have a better meal here than you would elsewhere in SLO/Pismo. read more

We were stopping in Arroyo Grande overnight on our road trip on the pacific coast highway. We found this restaurant last minute after noting great reviews on Google. It was amazing! It was busy for being 30 minutes before closing. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. The kids got the root beer and thought it was so good, caffeine free and nothing artificial. We ordered the pepperoni and roasted pepper pizza and the 50 layer lasagna, which was soooo delicious! It melts in your mouth. This restaurant is a must for anyone who is in town! read more
