We were in the area and wanted to try a new restaurant and Emerald City had great love being shown in the reviews so we had to check it out. The restaurant is on the corner of a small trip mall type of set up so there is free parking but it's split between the other places in the plaza so you may or may not get lucky. As for ordering, from the moment we entered and left there was a line of people during lunch time so that's always a good sign. We ordered and within 10 mins we got the three entrees we ordered and were lucky to nab one of the picnic tables they had outside. | WHAT WE GOT | + Crab Puppies (1/2 dozen) + Fish & Chips (2 cod) + Clam Strips All orders came with fries and slaw so we definitely had a potato overload but it was worth it since the fries here are thick and have a great crunch on the outside while still being fluffy. Just enough salt and cajun seasoning to stand out but not to overpower the other items. Crab puppies were not something we usually see on menus so we needed to try. They had a great flavor and crisp and were more standard hush puppy flavor than I could taste the crab. I'm glad we tried them but would probably try their other menu items before getting again. The fish & chips were a nice size and flaky! The batter/coating here is a little thinner so good if you like that option like me. Flavored well but would have liked the batter to be a little crispier but that's just me! The clear winner for us were the clam strips. Not usually an item we order but they were super tasty here! Nice chunky pieces into bite sized portions with the right amount of seasoning and batter. Be sure to try these! All in all, each of the entrees we ordered were tasty. For less than a 10 minute wait and prices under $10 you can't beat that. I can see why this is a favorite for locals and visitors. read more

This is a good place for southern style fried fish. It's not what I would call fish and chips, but it's very good. It's more a hybrid of the southern cornbread breading with apparently a bit more flour (wheat? rice?) in the batter. Spicing is good, and the fish is cooked perfectly. Very tasty. The crab puppies (hush puppies with crab meat) are killer. Nicely spicy too. A little crowded, and the staff does not wear gloves. Removed a star for this in this time of COVID-19. I heard about this place on TikTok as one of the best places to get fish and chips in the Seattle area. The fish was good but the portion for what you pay for is smaller than expected. There was more fries than fish. The crab puppies were a little over cooked for my taste. The service was amazing though. Everyone is so helpful and it didn't take that long to get our food. Me and my fiance were going to hang out at Seward Park over the summer and drove around looking for picnic food. We came across Emerald City Fish & Chips and decided to order takeout from here. This place is a black-owned business that makes excellent food. We ordered their clam chowder, crab hushpuppies, cod fish & chips, and halibut fish & chips. Everything was great for our picnic, especially the crab hushpuppies. I would highly recommend getting these with any order. I also enjoyed eating my french fries together with the clam chowder. Both of the fish & chips orders were good, but I think the halibut tasted better. Overall, I had a good experience here and it was very easy to place an order for takeout. I'm not a huge fish & chips fan, but all the reviews convinced me to give this place a try- I was pleasantly surprised! Usually there's way too much breading and you barely taste fish but the breading was very light and quite flavorful. I'd highly recommend the sampler platter which included fried clams (not my favorite, but worth trying), prawns, salmon, catfish, crab patties, fries, and cole slaw. Came here 11/12/2022. Emerald City Fish and Chips is a hole-in-the-wall fish and chip joint. Oof, where to start with this one. I'll keep it short. Rude staff that pretend that they don't hear you. Overcooked fish. MOLDY PIE. Yep, the sweet potato pie that I got had actual mold growing on it. Only noticed once I got home to eat so I couldn't even get a refund. What a joke. Also they pressure you so hard to tip and stare at you when you're doing the tip option on the digital register. I'm pretty sure they deliberately overcook your food/give you a hard time if you don't tip. All they're doing is standing there and taking an order, it's not even a sit down restaurant lol. Emerald City Fish n Chips is the only Fish n Chips restaurant near Columbia City and next to the Safeway on Rainier. Prices are more reasonable than other Fish n Chips businesses or bars. When I was there eating, they knew all the regular customers. One lady off the bus came and helped herself to a water cup size soda without buying anything. Two young students came in that they knew also helped themselves to free soda. So it seemed like they allowed these non paying people and treated them to a small cup of soda. It's been a long time since I've eaten here. The original owner would spice up the fries. They stopped seasoning the fries it seemed. But the cod was really good. Each order includes a small cup of coleslaw which was nice. It's not on the online menu as included. They put a thousand island dressing too instead of the normal ketchup. My hush puppies did not have much crab in it. I did ask if they used real crab or the artificial crab. He said AK King Crab. It was mainly batter inside. They knew the two other customers that came to get Take out who live near by. There is free parking in front. If it's full, there's a big lot across the st. You can come by the No 7 bus from Dtown, ID or Rainier Beach that runs every 10 mins during the day. Then if you need Gas, Groceries, T-Mobile Service, or shop at Ross it's next door. Dang. Amazing. Crispy, hot, batter was seasoned just right and can I have more? We got the clams and chips (echo every thing I stated earlier), crab puppies (echo everything) the crab was sweet and the peppers added just the right amount of taste and texture difference, cod and chips (echo). The hand cut fries were soft (my favorite) and crispy with a slight cajun spice. The coleslaw was not what I expected; fresh, light, spicy (just slightly) just what I needed. What can I say but 10's 10's 10's across the board! You can tell that the owners care about this business and the employees take ownership in their work and pride in what they do. Every aspect of this resturant from a resturant business perspective seems so dialed in and just absolutely on the money. Emerald City serves good food, at a good price, with a great location, and knows when, where, and how to make cutbacks to preserve profit without affecting guest experience - and that is the holy grail of resturant management. Let's start with the facility itself - it is spotless. In a part of town that is fairly run down, this building, although modest in its construction, stands out as immaculately maintained with smart additions to add class like a fenced in seating area with nice "landscaping", giving you a separation from neighborhood surrounding. The inside, is extremely clean and doesn't smell like a fish resturant at all. Looking back into the kitchen, the counters look like nobody is even working they're so clean. Not a single bin, wrapper, utensil, rag - nothing - is left out or unclean. They offer a wide selection of products, with several being things not easily found elsewhere - all at an extremely reasonable price. I couldn't order fish and chips at Denny's for this much, and in any other resturant, I would expect to pay 30-50% more for what they are serving at the quality that they are. They facilitate these prices by very smartly taking control of waste. You get small amounts of sauce, sauce packets, straws, napkins, etc. and nothing is left out just free to take. The coleslaw is a small portion - but enough to give you the feeling of it being a meal. The staff is phenomenal and extremely professional. My husband asked if everything was fried in different fryers because he is allergic to shellfish and they were extremely respectful and told him they yes, they keep three seperate fryers for meat fish and shellfish. For a question that is usually met with "get out" vibes - this was EXTREMELY refreshing. But of course - the food. Best restaurant staff and building in the world doesn't matter if the food as trash - which this absolutely is not. I won't say definitively it's the best I've ever have, but it's a very serious contender. I had the catfish and the salmon. Both came with a very thin, not at all greasy, cornmeal crust that I'm not sure if was a batter or just a crust, but either way it was superior to the traditional batter you get on fish and chips tenfold. The neither were fishy or muddy, both were perfectly cooked, and the catfish specifically was so moist and juicy, something that is hard to achieve with catfish due to its propensity to turn into shoeleather. The fries were crispy and not greasy. I wasn't a fan of the tartar sauce, which was very sweet and almost honey mustard like, but my husband loved it. The remoulade through was FANTASTIC with tons of texture and very little sweetness. I normally hate coke slaw, but theirs was chunky and very flavorful - I ate the whole thing. Overall, a fantastic resturant that you should absolutely check out. I could easily see this becoming a massive chain with how dialed in and absolutely on the money this operation is. I came here after watching Worth It! I didn't realize it was super close to my work, only a few minutes away walking! I had to stop by and I missed out all these years! I ordered their salmon and chips. It was delicious!! The tartar sauce ties everything together into perfect harmony. The salmon is hot and was freshly fried. The breading was thin and light so it doesn't have that thick breading and won't soggy quick. The fish held itself to together when eating and flakes when pulled a part. I also got the chowder. It had a nice salmon flavor and was Seattle in a cup. It has a great combination of flavors. The consistency was fantastic- not too thick or thin. I've never had a salmon chowder so it was a pleasant surprise of flavors. The fries that came with the salmon was okay. The chowder was really good, the style is closer to a Southern chowder (thicc) rather than a New England one. Tasty but a bit heavy. Both the catfish and the cod were very fresh and flakey. Not too greasy or oily which I really liked. I prefer cod more so I'd definitely recommend that one. The crab puppies were amazing. Not too cornbread heavy and lots of little bits and crab inside. Very first hard shell on the outside. Absolutely do not miss these. The handcut fries were decent as well. Good seasoning and reasonable portions.
