Back again and this time for some more greens! I got the avocado grapefruit salad (added smoked salmon) and it was delicious! I forgot to ask for the dressing on the side, but was pleasantly surprised to find it not overdressed at all. They even mixed in the smoked salmon, which was a nice personal touch. You want a place to chill? Want coffee? Tea? Wine? Beer? Even something to munch on? You come here!! This place is really big, especially for a location conveniently at walking distant of DuPont Circle: a large space with brick wall (personal fav) and is divided into 3 seating areas. The room all the way in the back has some couch and lounge chairs which provides an extremely cozy vibe. The bar runs in all 3 room as well, talking about convenience :) I didn't get food here (but I plan to my next visit). For drinks, I enjoyed my London fog at my recent visit. The vanilla syrup is HOUSEMADE and tasted delicious. Our table also got Counter Culture Martini which tasted like milkshake with coffee. It was delightful. Rise Up (coffee stout with more coffee) was good too. #theDupont is very well balanced, and I really like it for someone who doesn't like rye! The service was great. Our server was so sweet and patient. Love the experience!! One thing they don't have on the menu is desserts, eg: cakes etc. So if you really are having extreme sweets craving, you might be a little sad when you come here. But you can definitely make it up with other sweet drinks for that sweet fix. Also, on the side note, don't get weird out when you see the price on the coffee menu, because the numbers seem very random. It is because the prices are AFTRT TAX, which is pretty cool I think. Never managed to actually try the coffee, so I can't judge that. What I CAN judge is that when I arrived I tried to place my order at the counter and was told I needed to find a seat and a server would come over. I shrugged off the strangeness of this and sat nearby and spent the next ten minutes trying to get the attention of anyone to place my coffee order. I eventually gave up... I think with a knowledgeable barista this experience would be even better. If you're looking for great coffee and ambience in an extremely central location, look no further! Alongside Tryst, Sweet Science, and Central Coffee bar, Emissary - located in the lower part of a duplex around 22nd and P NW (just minutes from the Dupont Circle metro) - has become one of my favorite places to telework in the Washington area. They have an exceptional tea and coffee menu and well-trained baristas, and a great food selection as well. The entire space switches from line to table service after 5pm on weekdays. They have a nice large patio on a slighty-off-the-main-strip space in Dupont. There are a few important things to note. One, there are an extremely limited number of outlets, so be prepared with a full laptop charge if you're planning on staying a while. Second, the second (middle) room becomes laptop free on weekends and after 5pm on weekdays, so if you plan to stay you'll have to move to the front or back (which is where the comfier couches and outlets are anyway), Lastly, it can fill up quite quickly, especially right before happy hour, so it can be difficult to snag a space depending on your timing. This place is first of all super cute! It's got exposed brick everywhere. I ordered a mocha with coconut milk and a chocolate croissant. The barista made a cute little leaf design in the foam of my mocha which was super cute! They have lots of seating and they even have high top bar height seating. This mocha wasn't super sweet but was creamy and smooth; the best mocha I've ever had. The chocolate croissant was, well, a yummy chocolate croissant. I will definitely take a trip to visit this place in the future. My sister and sister in law both loved their lattes and said they were pretty amazing. Very nice place--and I'm not a fan of cafes, in general. Usually, they are too noisy for my taste. I had an apple turnover, which was delicious. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. And there's a sparsely attended room in the back, next to the bar, where the music was not playing and I could relax on a couch and read. They didn't have the chocolate cake when I was there, but I'm looking forward to trying that next... Also, by the way, I noticed that they had all kinds of liquors displayed behind the bar that I didn't recognize. The only ones I knew were several from a local distillery, Don Ciccio. Emissary is a venue that lives two lives: coffee shop by day, wine bar by night. We're squarely in the coffee shop camp, and have been coming almost daily since December. Why not 5 stars? Like most shops there's room for improvement - they outsource their pastry production to a chronically late baker, so don't plan on eating a chocolate croissant before 8-9am. I get the sense that management cares more about the evening wine cash cow than the morning coffee spot. We keep coming back because the morning baristas - Kenny and Myesha - hold this place together. They are basically friends at this point: they recognize my dog and my wife, wave and say hello on the street when we run into them elsewhere in the neighborhood, and they pretty much make our order everyday without having to ask what we're having. You wanna go where everyone knows your name. With a starbucks on the opposite corner, it'd be an easy place to miss. The baristas and tasty counter culture coffee keep us coming back. read more

o yesterday it was so busy with the WE WORKERS that we couldn't sit. Today we gave it another shot and again man oh man it is WEWORK galore. But we could sit on the couch with 2 ladies in front of me working and I count I AM NOT KIDDING 11 devices in my view where I sit. Do not understand management being all okay with this. But I am used to NYC where owners actually designate a certain amount of tables for non WE WORKERS but actual human beings who like to have a conversation like in the 80-ies...Now the food on the other hand is amazing. Another great coffee option in the DuPont Circle area. I was skeptical of trying this place at first, because the last couple reviews have not been the greatest, but I thought I would give it a shot. Upon walking in I loved the atmosphere. It's very posh and gives off a modern coffee shop vibe with lots and lots of seating which is a common problem coffee shops face. The Barista greeted us kindly, and was extremely nice even after their system messed up while trying to run my boyfriends visa gift card. I ordered a cappuccino and my boyfriend ordered a hot chocolate. We sat on the window bar so we could people watch, as it sits right on the street (saw some cute dogs!). The barista brought us our drinks, which was very kind. My cappuccino was good, very strong so added 2 sugars and some honey, but after that it was great. My boyfriends hot chocolate was very chocolatey and could tell it wasn't simply made out of a packet. All in all pretty good coffee, not the best in the DuPont area, but the atmosphere makes up for it! read more

The inside of this place is amazing! Wood tables and the Bar in the back is fantastic! It looks like an old western whiskey bar. They have great coffee and food, I mean what's not to like. I am a big fan of their patio. However in the front area where people sit by the cashier, it is kind of radiculous to force guests to have a waiter bring you a single cup of coffee when you can just walk up, order, and pay for it yourself in a lot less time. Great spot! Love to come in for my usual smoothie and avocado toast. Visit DC very often to meet with close friends and I always make sure I come to Emissary! Although, my last visit was interrupted by an altercation between a manager, HR representative or maybe just another employee and (from my understanding) a former employee. Emissary usually has a great environment to work in and be able to focus despite the traffic of customers. Unfortunately, I had trouble doing this during my last visit with this incident taking place. The motive behind the two star rating would be how unnecessary the conflict was. The former employee wasn't causing any harm and seemed like he didn't even want to be involved in what was going on. The other employees seemed to enjoy his presence and this one employee just simply didn't want him to be there for some reason. I would love to return to Emissary, the food is great but not if the employees treat each other with the amount of respect this former employee was treated with. I've been going to Emissary for a long time, but my last several visits have been disappointing. I ordered a cold brew with oat milk and it was nearly $7. They charge a $.75 upcharge for non-dairy milk and their cold brew was very clearly watered down or just iced coffee. To make matters worse, they put so much ice in the cup, I didnt actually even get that much coffee. This is not a good value for money and the quality has declined significantly. read more
