I'm a transplant from Sacramento still finding my way in San Jose and am so glad that I went to Tony after trying so many other places in town. He not only gave me a wonderful massage, he gave me knowledge and advice on massage thereapy and excercises I can do at my desk. He loves what he does and makes you feel very comfortable. I was in a talkative mood and we had a very pleasant conversation during the hour. I would call this an "artful" massage becasue he uses heated stones and very warm oil on the body. He asked where I was having issues and worked out the kinks in my back. I went home and curled up on the sofa afterwards and felt like a lump of melting butter - slept like a baby! Growing up in Sacramento, I endured some extremely hot summers and used to swim a lot. I have lower back issues from being bent over shampooing people for years, bursitis in my shoulders from blow-drying, and a myriad of other repetitive stress issues. Chris has been a client of mine for a few years and has always said I should try a massage to help with the stuff I'm always complaining about. Hating massage as I do I've always politely declined his voodoo rubbing advances, in my estimation massage therapy is akin to seeing a witch doctor for cancer treatment, I'm all about good old Vicodin when I have an ache. So two things happened to land me in Chris's at home massage studio. #1 I woke up one morning unable to lift my left arm above my shoulder and when I went to the doctor she told me I should think about trying massage to alleviate some of the tension that was causing the lack of motion in my shoulder, this on it's own wouldn't have been enough. #2 the next day Chris was in for a haircut and saw me wincing while i was working and before he sat down he gently took hold of my shoulder and worked the giant knot that was bothering me and within a few minutes I felt like a new man, I scheduled an appointment right then and there. A few days later I find myself in his studio, in my skivies listening to ambient french jazz type music having the most relaxing experience of my life. One of the reasons I hate massage is the smarmy happy ending type vibe i get from most masseuses I've met, the other is that I CANNOT handle too much pressure and no matter how i explain this every masseuse tries to see if they can actually put a hand through my body and touch the table, I guess some people like that kinda S&M stuff but not for me I want a soothing calming massage. The first session is always an assessment. This was to better understand the pain and my current injuries. Honestly, if someone doesn't do this first, I'd question if they really knew what they were doing. An example: I've gotten more injured by another franchise that rhymes with The Oint because they never assessed and just went straight into movement. I booked an hour with a well experienced masseuse that used to work at the Olympics! Bob walked me through what I can do to improve my movement after our sessions, including neuromuscular exercises when I'm home. Before going to him I had MAJOR cramps during menstrual cycles, so painful I couldn't walk. The cramps were potentially due to my tight psoas. Just 2 sessions with Bob, I no longer have that issue. There are so many other issues due to tight muscles that were relieved after my sessions with Bob. And I can't wait to book more massage sessions!

He provided the right amount of pressure and checked in with me on a regular basis. He totally got all of my knots out, and I had a TON, especially in my shoulder and upper back area. After the massage, he gave me some recommended stretches as well as tips to reduce the formation of more knots. He then tried a combination of deep tissue hilot and hot stone on me; I have had unpleasant deep tissue massages by other therapists in the past, but I decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did because it was amazing! He communicated with me during the entire experience to make sure everything was to my comfort level. This is easily the best massage I ever got. Lester is a very friendly, polite, caring masseuse who asks for your feedback along the way and wouldn't dream of hurting you. Of course some aspects of the massage will be a bit painful (that's just how any effective massage is), but not once was I in any sort of excruciated state. Lester is trained in the art of Hilot, traditional Filipino massage. Hilot combines aspects of various Indian, Chinese, and Thai massage techniques and is easily one of the most effective massage styles I've experienced. Lester began with a traditional, deep tissue massage that was incredibly relaxing; I found myself on the edge of sleep more than a few times during my session. But it was also a dynamic experience; Lester had me position my arms in certain ways to better hit muscles in my back, bend my legs in certain ways to stretch and soothe muscles in my quads, calves and feet, and had me hold hot (not too hot!) stones to relax my ever-tense hand muscles. Which reminds me: hot stones! Lester incorporates hot stones into the massage, which felt incredibly nice. He also did Chinese cupping (puts a little candle on your back, lights it, quickly covers it with a glass cup to snuff the flame, then suction is created). I don't have extensive knowledge of either of these techniques, but they sure as heck felt nice. In addition, Lester used a little wooden Thai massage stick to work out the knots and tension in my hands and feet, and he really must have done an expert job because I'm having less pain than I can ever remember having. I had an odd problem of an aching upper left leg/hip along with an uneven foot strike (like my left leg was slightly shorter), and a persistently sore hamstring. Kave told me that even though the symptoms were on the left, the problem was in my right leg. That sounded odd to me, but after she focused her massage efforts on several seemingly random locations (but it was clear she wasn't guessing and knew exactly how to find them), over several sessions my symptoms lessened. She said that it would take seven sessions, after which improvement would continue for a couple of weeks, and that I should be symptom-free for at least seven months. She was spot on; a couple of weeks after my last session I was all better, and I didn't start getting a sore hamstring for 9 months; time to see her again. It might be worth mentioning that before seeing Kave I had been to a physical therapist at Kaiser who gave me various exercises; they didn't help.
