I'm not sure I can appropriately describe this establishment other than to say En Su Boca has given me more happiness than I thought possible. If you are on the fence, please jump over the fence, and mouth first into the best nachos that will ever grace your sweet little tongue. Nachos Totopos (no meat necessary) have brought me pure satisfaction time and time again. Wash it down with a frozen house margarita and you shan't need worldly possessions any further as you have reached enlightenment in this astral plane. Tacos are supposed to make you happy, these just made us sad. En Su Boca used to be our go-to, especially for late night. On a holiday Monday we tried to stop by two other places and couldn't even get a seat (but that's for another review), so we turned to En Su Boca. We showed up during happy hour and ordered two house margaritas, the happy hour trio, wings, and 4 tacos- two baja, and two carnitas to share. The trio came out first, pretty good, some over fried chips but nothing to complain about. Next were the tacos. Wow, these were horrendous. Cold tortilla shells that were seemingly oiled before topping with the protein. This made every bite regretful, but I fear that the fishy fish will become more regretful later. We told the server, and she ended up taking half off since we took a bite of each (?) Next, the wings came out. We had high hopes because they're out favorite menu item. I had the genius idea of dipping my wing in queso- cause why not. Well when I pulled away, a fried hair was left in our queso dip. I lived in California for 8 years and I know RVA doesn't have real taquerias, but if you don't care and just want great tex-mex (not chain or standard platter fare) this place is great! The only issue straight off the bat is parking is a pain. However, tortillas - yum (again... don't try to compare to literally fresh made in house in Cali) but they are tasty corn tortillas that don't fall apart! Various meats and vegetarian fillings. Generous and fast. Street corn. Good beer selection. Open air and also outdoor seating. The day I went they also were playing a fun classic country playlist (think Dolly, Loretta Lynn etc. Love it!!). Super chill, friendly service, food was really good and prices were not crazy. We stopped by on a Wed night - new-ish to Richmond, seemed like this was a popular place with locals, trendy Mexican. We got 2 house margs and shared the nachos totopos. The margs were decent, though I really prefer fresh lime juice to sour mix... most places use sour though. The "nachos" were tasty, we added ground beef ("sloppy jose") as a protein. My complaint: this place, at least what we ordered, was WAY overpriced for what it is. I know inflation is gutting us but still... The Margs were $9.50. I'd say $7-$8 would be more a little more reasonable. However, the "nachos"... super overpriced. They were $14 without protein, which is a $4 add-on. If we hadn't added the meat, the "nachos" would have just been chips with melted cheese, a drizzle of lime crema and some cilantro sprinkled on. No beans, no pico, no jalapeños... Those are NOT "nachos" - just cheesy chips... and for $14? $14 would have been a little more fair if it came with the protein and those other toppings. So we had a $42 bill ($37 + 13.5% tax) before tip for a medium size cheesy chips with ground beef and 2 margs. I'm sure they're not alone in the price point, but man, as avid "going-out eaters", we're really starting to look at and in some cases adjust our behaviors, sadly. My family's favorite restaurant in Richmond. During stay at home this is the place we missed and wanted to eat the most. Fantastic food every time. Salsas are awesome- some of the best I've had anywhere in the US. Portions are always big. Atmosphere is fun and Dos Equis Amber is always on tap. Can't go wrong! read more

I've been to En Su Boca before only to have drinks and I enjoyed the atmosphere and the bartenders. Decided to stop by for lunch on a Saturday. The was decently busy. Sat at the bar and had excellent and prompt service. My coworker and I started off with the homemade chips and salsa which came with three sides of salsa - fire roasted tomato, tomatillo and grilled habanero. They were all really good and I loved the spicy kick of the habanero. After a few minutes deciding on what kind of tacos to get, I did the 4 for $11 which you can mix and match from their plentiful options. I chose carne asada, Yucatán pork pibil (I was also asked if I had a spicy tolerance), braised chicken tinga (which the bartender recommended and to also add tomatillo salsa on it) and the southern fried fish. The wait was definitely not long before we got our meals. I was very impressed with the heaping pile of meats on my double stacked tacos. I started off with the Yucatán pork pibil - So good and very flavorful. I am a huge fan of spicy food and the habanero definitely delivered the right amount of heat and it compliments the meat very well. The pickled onion was a nice touch to it, too. Braised chicken tinga w/ tomatillo - Another delicious taco. I'm glad I went with the recommendation to add the tomatillo. The chicken was stewed and packed with a lot of flavor. Carne asada - I was actually disappointed with this one out of all as I thought it lacked flavor. However, the cuts of the meat were a decent size and the meat was very tender. I just expected a little more. Southern fried fish - This was definitely my favorite! Lightly battered and fried topped with slaw mix and their chipotle crema. Squeezed some lime on it, heaven! The chipotle crema can take away from the flavors of the fish, I had to scoop a little out (or maybe they were just a bit too generous with the amount this time). Regardless, it was one of the best fish tacos I've had in a very long time. I can definitely see myself coming back to try the rest of the menu and would recommended this little place for those who want a laid back and eclectic vibe that has great food with a nicely added twist. read more

Great food portions for the price! 4 huge tacos for $11 is a fantastic deal for the area. Salsas a very good and unlimited for $3! I highly recommend this place especially during non-pandemic times where the Happy Hour is BOMB! My favorite tacos are the carnitas as well as the fish tacos, which are pleasantly served on corn tortillas. Always so crispy and everything tastes fresh. Highly recommend this place/for groups! Came here for dinner with my mom awhile ago, haven't been able to come by since my mom tragically passed but today I was passing by and said "what the heck!" And pulled the car into the parking lot. I got a big juicy margarita with some super delish queso with a side of guacamole! After that my amazing talented waiter recommended the chicken burrito soaked in hot melted cheese. YUMM!! En Su Boca consistently delivers each and every time I have been there. I'm a recent transplant, so consistent quality is important to me as I map out the eating scene in the downtown areola. Their happy hour is no joke--margaritas (on the rocks) are balanced and refreshing, their burrito portion is like chipotle on steroids and the chips and salsas are honestly perfect. Have had the pleasure of sitting outside in the hot seasons and warming up by the space heater in recent months. The first draw is the history behind the location of this gem. Then there's the name. But seriously, if you're going to demand I put something in this foodie's face, then you need to come correct. And boy did they. The menu is pretty simple, but everything packs a serious flavor punch. I started out with an intriguing margarita: pineapple cilantro. It was both refreshing and delicious. The balance of tequila and pineapple works nicely. Surprisingly, the cilantro adds a clean finish and breaks up the sweetness of the pineapple. It's Mexican, so unlimited chips and salsa were a must. All 3 salsas were delicioso but the hot was my fave. It had a sweet heat going for it. But beware of the afterburn. After some early evening drinking, tacos were just what we needed. I got 3: fish (maybe the best fish taco ever...including California), carnitas (almost as good as my adoptive Abuela in Phoenix makes), and carne asada (great flavor, but of you're on a first date or don't love onions, ask them to go light). I ALWAYS look forward to happy hour here! Service can be iffy and it can be tough to get a table, but our most recent visit was great (I even lucked out on parking)! A few tips-- 1. They have their "happiest hour" from 5-6pm, which includes $1 taco specials that change based on the day. 2. Parking is limited...like REALLY limited. Small place but they've optimized for seating. That's about all I had positive to say about it. Let's begin. We were greeted and seated right away but it took about 10-15 minutes to be acknowledged by our server. Ordered drinks and apps which came out fairly quickly. However, we asked for silverware and was told they were washing some and we'd have it as soon as possible. We ordered street corn which is not easily shareable without cutting it off the cob so we either waited and it would be cold or someone didn't get some. Not great choices either way. We finished both apps and waited another 10 minutes before our waitress came back to get our food order. When food came out it looked good but everyone's food was cold or room temperature. 4 tacos and a burrito and all were not even warm. I cannot impress upon wait staff enough how important it is to serve hot food HOT. This is like the third incident in recent weeks of being served room temperature or cold food. Ok so moving past room temperature, the chicken tacos and burrito were just bland. There are so many ways to add flavor in tacos and it just tasted like plain chicken. The burrito was boring. Not one of us finished the tacos and I left 2/3 a burrito on the plate. No point reheating bland food. So bottom line, save your money. There are so many good taco places in town that serve amazing food and you will receive better service. No, I won't be returning and I think my Richmond friends I was with feel the same way. I see they read the reviews, so to the manager or whoever reads this, this is what happened. We came and were quoted a 30-40 minute wait time. No problem. We got a drink at the bar and hung out. At approaching 45 minutes, we asked where we were in the waitlist. Hostess said we were the next table to be seated. EXCEPT just a few minutes later, someone who was not the hostess came over and seated another party with the same name at what was supposed to be our table. The hostess apologized, but we ended up waiting 1 HOUR AND 20 MINUTES TO BE SEATED. The party that took our table had their food by the time we were finally seated. It doesn't matter how the food tasted because this horrible customer service left a bad enough taste in my mouth. If she had said "let me offer you guys complimentary chips & guac" or something, the rating would probably be much higher. At least they would have made an effort to make it right. read more

I've been a couple of time now and I so want my experience here to be better. While the food is better than a lot of the Mexican (inspired) I've had in RVA, service seems to be an issue here. On my last (final?) visit the person who took my phone order seemed inconvenienced by my call. When I arrived the hostess simply pointed and said "bar" when I indicated I was picking up a to go order. I am super bummed about my first time here. I was so excited to give it a try. So let's start with the good. They have a patio to dine on a beautiful day! I was expecting to have to wait a while for lunch on a Saturday but we were seated pretty quick. I added a star for this reason. Cons: I ordered the lavender lemonade cocktail. It was very refreshing! I was enjoying it until I noticed the fruit fly in it. I wanted to tell the waitress but she was MIA. At least 20 minutes went by. Then I noticed a red speck floating around. Perhaps a strawberry seed? However I didn't have a drink with strawberry so obviously it was a turn off. Again. On to the food! I ordered the carnitas salad. It looked really delicious so i could not wait to take a bite. Sadly it was SO INCREDIBLY BLAND. Absolutely zero flavor, I could have cried from disappointment. I wanted to dump Tapatio all over it just to get through the few more bites I felt obligated to take since I ordered it but once again our waitress was MIA. I waited and waited and waited for her to come back, she finally did 20 minutes later, completely exceeding the time a server should make sure your food came out okay. Never asked us how our food was. Asked us if we wanted another beverage and whisked herself away before I could utter the words hot sauce please!! Be prepared to chase this girl down if you need anything. If she was at least nice or friendly and smiling I wouldn't have probably been annoyed with how unreasonably long she was taking, but she looked like she was absolutely miserable from the moment she greeted us. Sadly, the place did not live up to my expectations. The menu itself is very limited. However, the food they do sell taste good. Nothing to write home and tell mom about (sorry I'm a taco snob! )I also didnt like that we had to pay for "unlimited chips and salsa!!" I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that does that. Maybe I just really like fries, but the sweet potato fries were amazing, the wings were a little above average (a little salty), and the queso was just alright (kinda bland but the presentation was appreciated). I got the "shredded steak" tacos not knowing that they were actually "sloppy joe" tacos which is the most disgusting abomination of a taco I think I've ever had. My favorite taco spot, the fish tacos are to die for! or at least it used to be. The quality has fallen off lately, last few times i've gone the fish has been tiny and oftentimes a little burnt. I've even experienced some tortillas being hard rather than the way they're usually so soft. A couple months ago I would've gladly gone 5 stars, but the drop in quality has me concerned. Margaritas never disappoint and the brussel sprout taco is delicious for the vegetarians out there. Hopefully if you go you get the 5 star experience, sadly i've been left disappointed too many times in a row. read more

Awful service! Been here numerous times and was treated very ugly in front of the entire restaurant because we brought food for our 2 year old to eat which we had done before with no problem!!!! Will never return to any of their restaurants! Went to Chicken Fiesta a chain restaurant and was treated with the utmost respect and they welcomed the 2 year old's outside food it was not a problem and not a huge scene. They seated us at En Su Boca and put a high chair at the table seeing we had outside food with 2 ordering adults before they came back to the table to make a scene. Never have I seen anything like this happen over a 2 year old!!!!' I sure hope no one in there has children... which I know for a fact they do! Not family orientated . Soggy, under-filled, overpriced tacos, bottom-of-the-bag, crumb filled chip portions, and under-filled cups of salsa. We found this place when waiting for our movie to start and just wanting a drink. We liked the bar so much we came back for a late dinner. Again, great drinks and the guac was very good! The outside seating is really nice and our waitress was very friendly. The reason I'm only giving 4 stars is the tacos weren't anything spectacular. We got 4 in total and got a variety, and all of them were forgettable. Maybe we'll try some of their other food next time but will definitely come back for more drinks! read more
