Very hip looking high way Mexican Cafe with a young crowd. The ambiance is casual yet not boring at all. This little place is happening! You might need to reserve ahead especially if you are a party of more than two. I strongly recommend the corn on the cob, very delicious smoky perfectly cooked with a generous portion of graded cheese and cream on top, sprinkled fresh cilantro and chilli powder... You won't regret! The marinated chicken tacos and chorizo tacos are my favourite. They come on doubled soft and warm tortilla, very tasty. They also have a small bar for condiments (go for some spicy salsa). The tacos are small so I would recommend at least four of them per person. I enjoyed the milky soft drink sprinkled with cinnamon (condensed milk on ice) that I forgot the name. The service was quick and the staff was really nice. Not a bad Richmond addition. This place has modern Mexican food with the Richmond vibe. All the severs are total Richmond hipsters and they start you off with a glass water bottle when you sit at the table. I highly recommend the chips and guacamole. The chips are thicker and more like pita chips, but I honestly prefer that so I can scoop all the flavorful goodness without the chip breaking. Prices are higher because this isn't your traditional family owned Mexican restaurant. The meals are higher quality and topped with fresh cilantro and half limes. We were so excited to come here and very disappointed once we ate. We came in during the happy hour and each got two tacos. As soon as we got there the hostess had given us cups we couldn't use. One was dirty and the other had a crack in it. We sat outside and it took a really long time for anyone to even come check on us. It wasn't crowded maybe 3/4 other tables we were the only ones outside. We each ordered two tacos to start and our waitress was visibly annoyed (probably bc the tacos were only $2) she brought our food out and never checked on us because if she would've we would've let her know my boyfriend didn't like his food. The tortillas were like undercooked and i could take it and ball it back up into dough. We just got our check and left. Came here with my girlfriend for dinner on a Sunday night. Had to wait about 25 minutes for a table which was unexpected, but not a problem. Service was pretty quick. I had a frozen margarita which was really good. We ordered the corn appetizer, gucamole, and the bottomless salsa to start. The corn was awesome, a must have if you come. The guac was good, not my favorite, but fresh. I had the carnitas burrito which was spicy but excellent. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small takeout window to order from. The chicken nachos were a bit soggy and hard to eat like nachos per say, but the chicken burrito was amazing !!! It was a bit slow, but I think that's considering it was a weekend late night were this is a hot spot since not much else is open at that time; is important to base the time of your visit on the people you're with. My girlfriend and I went here thinking we could have a light lunch but when I walked out spending 90$ on 8 tacos and 2 drink (which was supposed to be 9.50 each but walked out paying $14 on my $9.50 drink) food was mediocre at best, jalapeño queso just tasted like regular unspiced cheese but for 10$. I hate leaving bad reviews but we had a pretty bad experience at what I've heard was a pretty great place. 1) was told there was a 20 min wait on a Wednesday at 545--totally fine. After surpassing 20 min my friend checked with the hostess (our pregnant friend had driven an hour to meet us and had work early) and she assured her we were next. We proceeded to watch 4 other tables get seated. It took 50 min to be seated inside when we had requested outside. 2) asked for two margaritas on the rocks, got frozen 3) asked for no rice and beans on my carnitas salad, got rice and beans 4) ordered a sloppy Jose taco and got a soy taco Overall, nothing really went right but we still tried our best to enjoy the 'just ok' food that we had not requested. Good place to go for happy hour; there are solid deals on food and drinks! In general, the food is bright, colorful, and tasty. And that's me sticking to the vegetarian options! My favorite app is the corn, which is slathered in cheese and mayo and lime. Damn good. The rajas burrito is also filling and yummy. Also, house margs are strong so if you shake your head at weak/sweet cocktails, this may be more to your liking. Service is always prompt and friendly, probably because I always get the same awesome waitress. And decor is quirky and spacious. Was looking for something good for a quick lunch the place is eye catching from the street and even more so when you step inside. Not much for hipster joints for that's exactly what this place is, only up north would you find a hipster taco place. The food and drinks came out pretty quickly. I ordered the tacos de asada and the kids had a burrito and a quesadilla, for a hipster joint the tacos were alright the kids said their food was good. If you want authentic tacos and Mexican food this isn't the place, if your a hipster looking to impress your hipster friends by pretending to know Mexican food then by all means. On the good side the portions were huge and not insanely overpriced. Not saying this is terrible just not my cup of tea. My food arrives; the lone, pale flour tortilla burrito rests on a plate of crimson, covered in a light salsa and cilantro dressing. Picturesque, or simplistic, or lazy? There is a tiny lime on the plate as well. Very tiny. I recall an image of one thousand tiny limes. I decide on simplistic. My water remains unfilled. I cut into the burrito like butter. It is at this point that I notice my fork-- it has three, massive prongs. You may recall the shape of the average fork, it has four, thin prongs. I look at the diners around me, they all have four pronged forks. Why have they done this to me? I stare ahead of me moment, bemused, before taking my bite. The burrito is pretty good! I've been living in Richmond for almost two years now and I've got to tell you, this place is one of my favorite spots. Their fish tacos are amazing and the deal is incredible. The space is also really cool! The murals and atmosphere is very inviting and it's good to come here with a small group of friends. I have been here a few times and only actually eaten here twice. This is due to the fact that it is always extremely busy and the size of the location is pretty small. If you walk in at just the right time you can get a table, but if its during a rush it might be an hour wait. I went last weekend and was able to get a table without any wait. Got the endless chip basket to start out with that everyone is so crazy about. I thought the chips were way too salty and the salsas were kind of meh. We barely touched them. We ordered margaritas. I ordered "The Bestest" because drinking goals. And it was a great choice. My husband got the "Smoked Marg" which tasted like someone dumped a bottle of liquid smoke into a cup of tequila. It was harsh and our waitress kindly switched it out for the much better Bestest. The food was good, but I did not find it to be that outstanding. As someone that lived in San Diego and practically survived on carne asada, I did not find the carne asada quesedilla at En Su Boca to add up. Whenever I would pass by En Su Boca and see all the people spilling inside and out, I always said to myself that one day I would try them. Well, today was that day and unfortunely I was not impressed. My first indication that this may not be a good experience was when I called the restaurant. I decided to order take-out, so I pulled up the menu, selected my items and called to place an order. Whomever answered the phone seemed to be in no mood to place a takeout order because he gave what sounded like an aggravated sigh when I told him I was calling for takeout and dryly said "ok, what do you want?" I placed my order and went to pick it up. Upon entering the packed and extremely loud restaurant I kind of forgave the fellow who answered the phone, thinking to myself that I'd probably also be a little annoyed if I had to take phone orders in a place as loud as it was in there. The food was ready upon my arrival and I was happy with the price, so I paid and went merrily on my way. Once I got home my experience once again turned sour. I ordered the 10 tacos for $25. Four of the tacos I ordered were veggie with soy chorizo and the other six were a mix of chicken and regular chorizo. I will say I was disappointed because they were all crammed in the same container and I had to have my husband taste them all to tell me which ones were veggie and which ones had meat, because as a vegetarian the thought of accidentally biting into a meat taco was very unsettling to me. I also really feel like they should package the veggie tacos separate from the meat ones or at least use a divider because once again as a person who doesn't eat meat, I don't want the juice from tacos made with meat touching mines nor do I want the meat accidentally falling out and becoming a part of my taco. But anyway eventually we figured out which tacos we're meat filled and which were not and proceeded to eat, when to my extreme disapointment I found a medium length black hair in my taco!!!! At that point I was grossed out and couldn't bring myself to eat my last taco, so after inspecting the Mexican Street Corn (elote') I started eating that, and it was really really good! So here's the thing, I really hate to write less than stellar reviews because I do appreciate how hard restaurant owners, managers and staff work to service customers but this experience was definitely a miss for me. Putting the "hairy situation" (see what I did there) aside, the tacos weren't that great tasting to me, mines had big chunks of soy chorizo and lacked any flavor other than being spicy. With that being said I would maybe go inside and try their happy hour drinks and just order the corn but other than that I wouldn't order take-out or be in a big hurry to eat there again. read more

I just left here on a Wednesday for happy hour(1/29/20). Maybe the worst bartender I have experienced in Richmond thus far. The hostess was very polite, complimentary. As soon as I sat down I was greeted by a young lady who just didn't have any care in voice or face expression. I was in Richmond visiting some friends and we came here for brunch on a Saturday morning. Luckily, there was a table available since the place is not very large. I wish they had a bottomless option but they definitely did not skimp on the size of the drinks. I ordered a mimosa and it came in a pint glass! I loved the ratio of juice to champagne aka strong focus on champagne. We ordered chips and wings as an appetizer. Both were delicious! I liked how the chips were thicker and different than your free ones you get at a regular Mexican place. For our entrees, I ordered the chicken quesadilla, 2 of my friends ordered the breakfast burrito, and the last one ordered pork tacos. My quesadilla was average and nothing too notable about it. My friend with the tacos had a lot of oil and grease in his food. It was pouring out of his taco to the point he had to stop eating them. While we were eating, we ordered a round of margaritas and those were delicious! Very strong but flavorful. Overall, I'm giving it 3 stars since I found the food to be average but I would definitely come back for drinks if I was in the area. read more

Went for lunch on a Thursday afternoon around 130pm. Ordered 4 tacos and a sweet tea. My tea had some oily/soapy substance on the surface and it tasted very strange. The bartender made a new one, same thing... and then I saw why... used simple syrup to make sweet tea. Not cool. It was awful. The chips were so thick I couldn't eat them. The salsas were actually pretty good. Then my tacos came. I got one fish, one chicken and two carnitas. None were good. So for $30 (and I already wrote in a 25% tip) I ended up throwing away all of it. I was too hungry and in too much of a hurry to make a complaint at the time. This place would only be remotely acceptable you are too drunk to taste it or care. (I have had many many delicious tacos in my life and En Su Boca totally missed the mark. read more

Good food bad service We went on a Saturday fir an early dinner before the movie. The deck was almost full since it was a sunny afternoon and inside the bar was full but plenty of table seating. Still the service was slow. The water arrived fast and the waitress was attentive in the end maybe because she sensed I was annoyed in beginning. Assisting three or four other tables before ours including one that arrived about 10 minutes after we did before we good our drink order in....really it wasn't that busy. Southern fried fish tacos and Yucatan Pork Pibil tacos were order for a light dinner. Both were wonderful. The deck area us great to enjoy. The music inside was loud. First taco place I've tried in the Richmond area and it was worth going to in the end. I ordered the Sloppy Josè tacos, and they were delicious. The prices are decent and worth the penny. I really liked the fact that they provide you water pitchers so you don't have to wait for someone to come refill your drinks. The atmosphere was good, wasn't loud despite the World Cup games going on. I would definitely go back and try some other taco styles they provide. read more

This is a review of the food, which is amazing and why the wait is often pretty harrowing (which I'm not including in my review rating). I'm from Austin, and I have very high expectations for tacos. En Su Boca does not disappoint - in fact, I would add them close to the top of my all time favorite taco joints list because of the fish taco and general concept for ordering. I've also tried their smothered burrito - with fish - amazing. A lot of places try to cut corners with such reasonable prices, but the serving portions are huge, and they even put avocado in the burrito - bonus points! If you get a bartender who knows what a real michelada is - order one. The margaritas were decent enough, but I will definitely be going back quite often for the food. We went to En Su Boca on a Saturday in February around 4pm and they were relatively busy. We were seated on the heated patio which was still a little chilly but we appreciated their effort to try to keep us warm. It had a nice aesthetic and the server and host were very friendly. Now to the food, for appetizers we ordered the jalapeno queso and sweet potato fries. The jalapeno queso was lukewarm at best. We were really excited for something hot after being cold and the queso just did not cut it. There was a congealed layer of cheese on top which made us think it had been sitting a while after being heated up (we attached photos). It was flavorful but the temperature was off putting. The sweet potato fries however, were delicious. We did prefer the chipotle ketchup over the Tijuana ranch but both were good. For entrees we got a chicken quesadilla and a sloppy jose and southern fried fish taco. The quesadilla was hot and well seasoned, the salsa on the side was average. The sloppy jose taco was yummy but the fish taco was a little dry. We also ordered a margarita and a Mexican coke which were enjoyable. There was definitely tequila in that margarita and it was a good size for the price. Overall, if we could be more specific with the rating we would give it a 3.6. We would go back but, not ordering the queso and maybe trying some different tacos. read more

I won't assume my earlier review is the reason for "improvements", but En Su Boca is now a place I eat, regularly, happily. The salsa and tortillas complaint has been remediated -- yay! -- however, can we talk about the hostess? Wow. Aggressively unwelcoming. Pretty much every time. We've taken to eat solely at the bar to avoid that whole situation. Which is a shame because eating outside would be lovely. I just cannot abide by showing up to a restaurant and not being treated with basic hospitality. Does anyone else find (in general) Richmond restaurants to be lacking in hospitality? I can count on one hand places that nail it. But am stunned by how many times I'm made to feel unwelcome or a burden. read more
