My friends and I decided to go to a happy on Friday and we all settled on En Su Boca. When we arrived we waited 15 minutes before we were sat outside even though there were empty tables because they were afraid it was going to rain. After we were seated we had to wait another 15 minutes before someone finally came to get our drink orders. I mean I don't know if this is a regular thing at en su Boca but I dont think it should take 15 minutes to get water and be greeted by a server. Service was not that great that day BUT the food was worth it in my opinion. I got two fish tacos and the fish was really good wasn't fishy tasting or mushy and it had a great breading to it. The slaw on it went well with it and the creme on there was good too. The house margarita I ordered was great and strong for $8. read more

My family loves coming here whenever they visit. It's a must go to whenever people not from the area are visiting. The food is pretty good and I love be getting their bowls. I highly recommend their fried fish bowls. The sauce they put on it is amazing and the fish itself is crunchy and goes well with the beans and Mexican rice. Although not very authentic it's still very good and a nice twist on Mexican food. I recommend their tortilla chips. Their hearty and their crunchy and the right amount of thickness. Not to mention the three salsas that come With it, mild medium and spicy. Their decor is cool and eclectic and definitely represents Richmond. There is outdoor seating when it's warm but their indoor seating is limited so during the colder months it may be a longer wait time so be wary. Their location is really great however finding parking is a pain in the butt so I would plan accordingly. read more

This is one of my family and I's favorite restaurants in RVA. We typically just share the appetizer nachos and chicken wings during their happy hour times! Wednesday nights they have 50% off appetizers making it one of the best food happy hours in town! On Monday's, they have 1 dollar fish tacos and it is definitely worth the trip if you enjoy fish. Review only for Monday $1 fish tacos! Do it! I finally got around to trying the evasive 1 hour special on Mondays where fish tacos are only $1. The timing also allows you to partake in their other happy hour deals (which are just ok in my opinion). The tacos, though, are an incredible deal: so delicious and filling for the price. I love that they use double corn tortillas, a healthy portion of cabbage, and a big piece of fried fish. I personally am not the biggest fan of fried fish, but I thought it was cooked well and worked well with the flavors and textures of the cabbage. The chipotle/baja sauce was really good and had a nice kick! I only ate 2 tacos and was very satisfied. Overall, not the best fish tacos I've had in my life, but one of the best deals I have had. Horrible experience. At first it may appear that this place is setting a trend with its choice of dining options, either outdoor dining and walkup ordering or traditional indoor dining with a patio option but it's horribly executed. We were directed to the walkup ordering option since we preferred outdoor dining, but we sat at the window for ten minutes patiently waiting for one of the eight bar staff to acknowledge us, but it never happened. We went to the hostess to choose patio dining since there was more of a crowd which would increase our chances of ordering. We finally got to order and the tacos were served like we had just ordered off the 99 cents menu at a drive thru window before it closed. My tacos were drowning in the sauce used for both the bean taco and fish taco which made my shells a wet mushy messy experience. The waiter was just as dull as the food. Maybe if I was intoxicated I wouldn't have noticed all of these things but I was not therefore I was distracted by the poor service, lackluster food, and several dogs that were hanging out with their owners tableside. read more

The variety on the menu is great! My friend and I went in for lunch and both got the special that was a couple of tacos with rice and black beans. The rice and black beans both seemed a little dry but the meal overall was filling for such a great deal. The Mexican Cokes served with lime slices were a nice touch. The staff was honestly fantastic. From the hostess, the bussers, the bartenders, the food runner and our awesome waiter. (can't remember his name, sexy black guy) He was very personable, pleasant and thorough. The atmosphere was just fine, loved the energy and the patio for smoking off the bar as well as the separate outdoor eating patio. it's a great setup. For a Wednesday, the place was packed. I can't speak to the sanitary conditions of the establishment, I don't walk into a street food Mexican place and expect the staff to be wearing uniforms, a valet, Mahler playing in the background and whatever other such nonsense people are crying about. The place is packed, for a Wednesday which is endearing. The chips, salsa and guac were quite good, we also ordered the house margaritas needed a bit more booze. I'd suggest an extra shot mixed in. We both got burritos with steak and my spouse grabbed an extra steak taco. my burrito was "smothered" with cheese and a sauce, his just cheese (mild) The food wasn't terribly good. The steak was cooked to hell and dry. It had a good flavor, same as the taco, guessing they use sirloin or it isn't marinated. There is also a red sauce that they use that tastes like straight out marinara on the burrito. We just didn't care for it at all. The food wasn't disgusting, it just wasn't what we expected and personally wasn't thrilled with the flavor of that sauce. Seeing as how we aren't huge tequila fans, we probably won't go back. I really hate to offer 1 star because there was at least some effort, but this taco spot truly missed the mark for me and my husband. We were so excited to try this place given all the hype we had heard but we ended up disappointed. The space felt very trendy and hip but ultimately fell short on the food which left is feeling like En Su Boca is more of an overrated trend than an authentic Mexican restaurant. It was Friday night and we started with drinks at the bar while we waited for a table, which were quite pricey. Definitely comparable to what we were used to when we lived in D.C. The smoked marg that I got was not enjoyable. Way too smoky and strong. I swapped it for a lavender lemonade which was actually lovely. Chips and salsa were decent, nothing special but good nonetheless. We continued to keep an open mind as we had high hopes for these tacos. At this point, I was at a solid 3 stars for our experience so far. But you guys....these tacos. Awful. The flavor profiles were incredibly one-note. Very bland, mushy and greasy. We are big taco eaters and as our favorite taco joint, Bar Taco (based in northern va) is not in RVA, we've been on the hunt for a new go-to. But again, the tacos fell short. Most of them had the same salsa on them that came with our chips. Also, they were all extremely (!!) spicy. I'm all for spice and heat but these were painfully hot and somehow still lacked flavor. It's like there was the same spice blend being dumped in the fillings for every taco. The lukewarm water that was served did not offer any relief. Two other things I'll note: one that the atmosphere is definitely more bar-like than restaurant. Which is fine - but if you're wanting to sit and relax, this is not the place. Painfully loud music that made it nearly impossible to have a conversation at the same table. Second, they allow smoking on the outside deck after 11 pm but we were there around 8:30-10 and folks were already smoking, mostly around the property from what we could see, but with all the windows and doors remaining open, the smoke smell was present in the dining and bar area. Even if the food was top notch, the smoke and smell is something that I still wouldn't be able to look past. All in all, we started with high hopes but as the experience progressed, the stars were falling off. Unfortunate but we will not be returning. read more

I enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. The staff was friendly and inviting. The parking can be a little rough because the parking lot is small. The bottomless chips and salsas were excellent. The chips and salsa aren't free with meals here like other Mexican restaurants , but it is pretty good. They are known for their tacos but I decided to try out the burrito. Great service! Went for my birthday (8/17/2020). The Apps, Food and drinks were served quickly. My server was very sweet, upbeat, and prompt. I love this place so much and so happy I moved back so I can drop in whenever I'd like to! The tacos are amazing, my favorites are the sloppy jose and the chorizo. The street corn is my favorite app and you can order it on or off the cob. Any of their margaritas are to die for, but my favorite is the pineapple cilantro. I've been to this restaurant several times before and I took my mom here a few days back. We couldn't finish our black bean tacos so I got them packed. The next day, as I took one bite in the first taco, there was a piece of bone with meat on it! We are both vegetarian and I'm glad that my mom did not eat those tacos!! My friend and I decided to stop here before going to the movies. The decor was nice. They also have an outdoor seating area that is very nice but we opted to sit inside being that it was Happy Hour and the outdoor area was pretty full. I informed the waitress that this was my first visit and we needed to get something quick because we had plans for a 6:50 movie. The staff was very friendly so we took the recommended taco and chips with salsa. The food came out rather fast (so fast I had to make sure it was our order). The tacos were okay, nothing really to get all excited over but not your Taco Bell taco either. I also ordered a frozen margarita which was too strong in my opinion. I would rather not taste all the alcohol but if you want a strong drink then you would love it. The margarita comes frozen or on the rocks and they have a variety of flavors to choose from. If you get there before 6 (Happy Hour), they have plenty of drink and food specials. They also give you complimentary water once you're seated. The chips with salsa comes with four salsa that tasted pretty well. Overall, the food was pretty decent. I would give this place another try to explore other menu items. My go-to "feeling Mexican food but with a twist" restaurant when I lived in RIchmond. I came back to visit my sister, and of course I had to come. Service and atmosphere: great service! It's always decently loud in the restaurant, so don't expect to have a great conversation inside. Appetizers: You HAVE to try the chips and salsas. The bottomless chips are thick cut and perfectly salted. Obviously homemade. Then the mild, medium, and hot salsas are all delicious. I could easily just eat all the chips and nothing else. I got their brunch burrito - eggs, chorizo and black beans. It was pretty good, but I will get my usual next time - southern fried fish! I got the agua fresca which was delicious!! En Su Boca is the best taco/margarita place in RVA! Don't Look Back was a close second, but since they had the fire and are no longer around, that leaves En Su Boca as the uncontested best place to get authentic Mexican food and margaritas! Be warned that they are nearly always packed (especially on the weekends), but even though it's crowded, it's still a great time! The tacos are so delicious and fresh and so are the margaritas. I honestly can't imagine anyone disliking this place. It's a great place to go with my husband on a Friday night, but I'd also go there with my girlfriends or family. I want to start this review by saying that the service here is excellent. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, attentive, and just all around super human beings. I was just unimpressed by the food. It was cooked, it was edible. It was just underwhelming, functional Mexican food. They bring you a trio of salsas that are tasty enough (believe them when they tell you the orange salsa is hot) and I was content munching on the chips that came with them. I had the carne asada burrito and my spouse had the chicken tinga quesadilla and he said my burrito tasted better than his meal. I just feel like it lacked a "WOW!" factor. I want to take the service there and pair them up with a higher quality of fare. They deserve better. read more

Dog friendly patio! Great tacos! I had one soy chorizo and one poblano. They're in double wrapped corn tortillas, so you really get two tacos for one. The soy chorizo was verrrrrry good. I write this review and give it a single star out of frustration! Living in Texas and California most of my life, I was pleasantly surprised when I moved to Richmond a few years ago with all of the food choices that are not national chains. A plus!!!!!!! WAIT, stop the presses! All except for Mexican breakfast. Specific to Texas, almost every single Mexican restaurant is open for breakfast starting at 6AM and they are open late, usually closing at midnight during the week and 1AM or 2AM on weekends. En Su Boca opens up at 11AM and they stripped out the breakfast options for the most part on their menu. Homemade tortillas are the best? In Richmond? Unfortunately not! Mr. Manager - You, and like most Mexican places in Richmond are missing out on a huge opportunity. This morning, 10AM, I had to go to WaWa to get a burrito. Pathetic. read more

Food was average at best. An order of guac is 10 dollars. Most of their food is way over priced. They state the reason is to make up for alcohol sales. Either way it's a poor sales tactic and I will never be back. I'd rather support a business multiple times a week then be nickeled and dimed each visit. Poor service. I have never been more disappointed leaving a taco spot. Everything was under seasoned and all the salsas were sweet. The standard salsa tasted more like Italian sauce. The carnitas had no seasoning, and it didn't help that the salsa on top tasted like spaghetti sauce The southern fried fish was actually ok! The chicken tinga was the most seasoned of the four, but it wasn't better than Soul Taco's. The black beans were too salty and bland. The server was very kind though. It's a shame the cooks dropped the ball tonight. I can only hope it was an off night for them and not a regular occurrence. Regardless, I won't be back. What a lovely little place. I stopped in with a friend after playing some games at The Circuit, after my boss had given rave reviews. I was not disappointed. This place was great! The food was fast and fresh. It did take me a second to understand the flow of the menu, but now I have it down. It was definitely hard to choose a dish as everything that passed our table looked and smelled amazing! The chips we got as a started with the 3 sauces was shockingly great. I broke my no carb limit to munch down. They aren't your average tortilla chips you find at your local restaurant. They are thick, crunchy and oh so tasty with the dipping sauces! I even used them with my salad to keep that crunch going. This is definitely a place you need to visit multiple times to try the different selections. My wife was craving some "street style" tacos last night, so we decided the best place would be en su boca. I have not been back here in years and I was reminded why. There was nothing really wrong with anything, but there was nothing right either. Chips and Salsa (that you have to buy, which is no prob) were ok, the salsa trio was good but the chips were so hard they about broke your teeth. We ordered 10 various tacos and they all were just ok. The best one was the fish taco. If you want decent tacos, this place is not too bad, but I would not go out of my way (which we did) to get here. read more

I had a wonderful lunch today! This was my first experience at En Su Boca and it will not be my last. I have passed by this place for last 2 years and never stopped in, big mistake on my part. Both the food and service were extraordinary. It's also a lot bigger inside than it appears from outside. I started with the bottomless chips and was provided three different salsas with it. The fire roasted tomato salsa, and tomatillo salsa verde were my favorite of the three. I couldn't decide between which two I liked better. For lunch I ordered four chorizo tacos sprinkled with fresh onion and cilantro. The flavors of the salsas worked well on the tacos. It was a good balance of spice and heat. There are several different menu options I would like to try so I will definitely be back again. The server that took care of me had an incredibly great attitude, and was well knowledgeable of the menu options and very proud to be working for the restaurant. That alone can say a lot about and establishment when the employees like working for them. read more
