I had a wonderful lunch today! This was my first experience at En Su Boca and it will not be my last. I have passed by this place for last 2 years and never stopped in, big mistake on my part. Both the food and service were extraordinary. It's also a lot bigger inside than it appears from outside. I started with the bottomless chips and was provided three different salsas with it. The fire roasted tomato salsa, and tomatillo salsa verde were my favorite of the three. I couldn't decide between which two I liked better. For lunch I ordered four chorizo tacos sprinkled with fresh onion and cilantro. The flavors of the salsas worked well on the tacos. It was a good balance of spice and heat. There are several different menu options I would like to try so I will definitely be back again. The server that took care of me had an incredibly great attitude, and was well knowledgeable of the menu options and very proud to be working for the restaurant. That alone can say a lot about and establishment when the employees like working for them. read more

Went for lunch with 4 work friends and the place was sparsely populated. Greeted immediately by the hostess and seated. Server was knowledgeable and friendly and even warned the pork pibil taco was very spicy. She also offered to go cups for our tea and soda. Food came out in 5-10 minutes and the order was exact. The atmosphere was nice, reminiscent of a cantina. In order, I had the chicken, carnitas, fish and pork pibil tacos. The chicken and carnitas looked similar but did taste slightly different. They were okay. The meat had good flavor but they were wet with stewing juices which detracted from the tacos. The meat was tender and the tortillas were double stacked to help the taco keep its structural integrity. The pork pibil had good flavor and the pickled onions were a nice touch. However, with the habanero salsa on top the taco was overpowered and became one note, hot. I would recommend either getting the salsa on the side or ask for a light amount. Not due to heat, but due to over powering the delicious pork. I would also recommend eating this taco last if you ordered other kinds because the heat would linger and take away from your next taco. Now, the last taco, the fish, was arguably the best taco of the four. The batter on the fish was seasoned well and fried to perfection. The fish was cooked well and was tender and delicious. One drawback was the slaw on top. I love cabbage on tacos, especially fish tacos, but the crema on top gave it a coleslaw flavor which seemed amiss to the overall taco. It may be, since it's called a southern fried taco, they were going for a coleslaw flavor but it took a 5 Star taco and made it a 4 Star taco for me. Overall, this was a great lunch spot and definitely will go back. The portions of meat on the taco were very generous and made this a good value for the price. 4 stars due to wet carnitas and chicken and flavors being to similar, too much salsa on the pibil and coleslaw like cabbage on the fish. One of my favorite happy hour spots in Richmond, especially during the warmer months! They have a great atmosphere and when its warm out they open huge floor to ceiling windows! Their margaritas are particularly good because of their in-house sweet and sour mix (and they are strong lol). Never had any complaints about the food here! I wanted to love this place. Badly. But my first visit failed to elicit feelings of true adoration. Instead, the experience was A-OK, and certainly warrants another looksie (aka a second visit). For starters, I love the atmosphere. It's loud, it's bustling, and it's full of energy. This is not a ddate night kind of spot, or at least it wasn't when I visited on a Saturday evening. But it's definitely a fun destination for a girl's night out or a dinner date with a rambunctious crowd. I went with a friend and despite the crowd, our party of two was seated almost immediately. We didn't try the patio, but that would be my choice on a future visit. It might not be a patio with a view, since it looks onto Boulevard, but a patio is a patio! And this one looks fun. Now for the bevs. The cocktail menu looks absolutely incredible, so after much contemplation, we both started with the Teeny Weeny Hot Bikini: tequila, watermelon, basil, agave, and lime. I mean, really, how awesome does that sound? And it was, except they were a tad heavy-handed with the agave. I'd totally order this again, though, but omit the sweetener next time. I used to be all about the sweet drinks, but lately it's just not my scene. After we finished those, we obviously needed round two, so we decided to try the Porch Swing (tequila, tamarind pulp, agave, lime) and the Long Walk (tequila, aperol, rosemary, lemon). We asked for them both to be light on the agave, but I think in the hustle and bustle of the evening this failed to translate from our servers to the bartenders. Again, they were both just a bit sweet for my liking, but I preferred the Porch Swing to the Long Walk. Did I mention the cocktail menu is super enticing? Yea, there are a few options I'd love to test out next time. And no, not everything has tequila - I just try to stick with one liquor and evening if possible. I'm not 22 anymore and those hangovers don't have much mercy. And, of course, the bites. To start, we ordered the chips and guacamole, which also came with three salsas: roasted tomato, tomatillo salsa verde, and mango habanero. This app was probably the hit of the meal and I enjoyed the guac and all three salsas. Just be aware, the mango habanero is pretty darn spicy so if you aren't used to hotness, buckle up. For my dinner, I was torn between the veggie burrito and tacos, but ultimately went with two tacos. I chose both veggie options, the rajas and the soy chorizo, which are served with taqueria onions, cilantro, and roasted tomato salsa. The soy chorizo was good, but I literally couldn't eat the rajas because it was so spicy. It's probably my own fault for not asking about the spice level, but I figured if something was that much of a mouth fire, they'd warn you in advance. I was pretty full at that point, so it's not like I left hungry, but dang that taco almost made me cry. I did have a bite of my friend's fish taco (she tried to force feed me the whole thing when I realized I couldn't stomach mine) and it was tasty! The only reason I didn't order it to begin with was because it's fried fish, rather than grilled. My dining companion also ordered the slow roasted carnitas taco and the marinated grilled chicken taco and she said they were tasty, albeit a bit spicy. Not too much to prohibit her from eating them, though. Apparently I'm the only wuss at the table. I look forward to going back for that guac, a burrito, and further exploration of the cocktail menu. read more

A coworker and I stopped in because I'm from California and I constantly crave carne asada/pico de gallo. Fact. I ordered the carne asada burrito to go. At just over $10 for a burrito, I was really hoping it would be a damn good burrito. Sadly, it wasn't. The carne asada was weirdly and intensely spicy, and the burrito itself was just alright. Don't ask me if I want to ruin my tacos by serving them on a flour tortilla "gringo style" (lookin at you, Don't Look Back...). Just serve them correctly. They do "new school" stuff that's creative and not traditional (if you INSIST on that), but they own that and I respect it. If you're getting a burrito, you get no say. If you don't understand how carnitas or carna asada should be prepared, you get no say. (If you don't know the difference between those two, you REALLY have no say.) If you drink one glass of wine with your dinner and won't try the chips because carbs or don't like spicy, get the hell out of here. They offer gringo options for you southern white bread whiners, but try to branch out. Really. It's worth it. Get: The chips and salsa (thick chips but they're good), pork pibil tacos, carne asada, any traditional style taco. Be wary of: The service. It's been really hit and miss for us. Last time was great (Monique helped us and she was the absolute best), but the time before that almost made me unwilling to return. (some horrible waitress who hopefully no longer works there.) Quite possibly the worst food I've had in Richmond. Like rancid, toilet hugging bad. The chips are too thick to compliment the salsas. The Chorizo tacos are just plain garbage smelling and tasting. Carnitas tasted like boiled pork with no seasoning, flavor, or texture. Chicken tacos were as bland as it gets. This place sucks. Their menu is uninspired, they have more alcohol than they know what to do with and their kitchen staff are slow, unprofessional and overly social. I expected to pop in for a quick lunch with my father around 1pm today. The restaurant wasn't too busy, but it looked like there was only one server for the six tables being occupied. We sat at the bar, hoping for quicker service, and that was an even bigger disaster. The bar maid, if you could even call her one, spent more time drinking and socializing with her coworkers than she did with us. It took 45 minutes for two orders of tacos! Four tacos took 45 minutes. And don't come at me with "good food takes time" BS. I can sit down and get about 10 tacos from Don't Look Back in half the time. Excellent! I just read a couple of bad reviews, and am wondering where the heck these people have been getting their tacos?! I lived in San Francisco, taco capital of the US, and En Su Boca gets it right. Every time I have gone, which has been seven times now, I get some variation of the cheap and plentiful tacos...made correctly, with two soft shells per taco. Bar service is excellent. Cold beer on tap. The bottomless chips are incredible and so are the salsas. Sure, I think the gravel parking lot is a pain on those wearing heels, and the front door needs a spring, but still, they haven't even been open for two months. Come on people, this place rocks. Come here early and often. I hate yelp for giving this spot 3 stars- it is absurd. First: The Mezcalito is on point. Stop ordering happy hour margaritas and complaining. Bartenders are rad, service is good too. They recently changed their menu, which sucks because I was really looking forward to trying some of the entrées they were putting together a few months ago. The fish tacos are by far the best tacos on the menu, that much is indisputable. If you are going to get a burrito get the Carnitas burrito. If all I had was the Mezcalito, fish tacos, and that street corn for the rest of my life I would be happy. No, I'd be fucking ecstatic. If you have a problem with those items then you have a problem with me. I'm not going to lie, some of the stuff on the newest menu doesn't appeal to me whatsoever. Nobody needs a sloppy Joe taco, and it tastes pretty whack guys- I tried it. They also offer a make-your-own quesadilla thing. I heard a distant owner makes these decisions and I wish he'd become even more distant. There are more creative ways to drum up extra business than streamlining taco fillings. Look at the menu and you'll see what I mean. The kitchen can pump out bangin food when left to their own devices. I am giving this place five stars because I fucking love it. All the instincts are right, but it's having an identity crisis. Authentic Mexican food doesn't need all the extra nonsense. My hope is that they make some al pastor tacos with grilled pineapple and forget about trying some "sloppy Joe" midwestern fusion. Overpriced, boring Mexican isn't really my thing. I was willing to try En Su Boca even though the reviews here were leaning towards negative. It wasn't worth it. It was pretty crowded when we arrived, and I was surprised to see a ton of kids, with quite a few seated at the bar. Parents, this is not a place for kids. If it doesn't have a kids menu, it's not a good restaurant for children. For the price and style of the food, and emphasis on fancy (overpriced) drinks, this isn't somewhere kids belong. There is absolutely no waiting area, and the big clump of people at the door made it difficult to figure out where the hostess stand was located. (There really isn't one.) You just kind of have to stand there looking around until you figure out who works there and can help you get a table. While waiting for a table, we tried a few of the specialty drinks, which were pretty good, but definitely not worth the $9 each. The food menu didn't really offer anything special, and they charge you for a basket of chips and salsa. None of the meals include sides, and the food is really overpriced. $10 for a burrito and nothing else? No thank you. We ordered the veggie burrito with soy chorizo, and tried fish, chicken and chorizo tacos. The tacos were fine, but not especially delicious, and I couldn't even eat half of the burrito. The soy chorizo was really terrible - it was dry, and tasted nothing like chorizo, it just had this awful, fake flavor. I always bring home leftovers, but this time, I left over half of my burrito behind. Pretty disappointing. The place just feels cool. Nicely decorated with a pretty strong hipster vibe. Seems like a great place to hangout with friends. The chips were awesome. They come with three housemade salsas. The habanero salsa was incredible. It was pretty spicy but I just had to keep eating it and even asked for more. Went with the tacos, got the chicken, fish, and chorizo tacos. The housemde chorizo was my favorite. They also have the coke with the real sugar if you're into that. Parking is not so good. They have a few parking spaces up front but plan on parking in the street. My friend had to walk quite a few blocks. But that's to be expected in this area. 'Meh' pretty much sums up my experiences at En Su Boca. While they have a FANTASTIC bar, one cannot live on booze alone, or so I've been told. The food I've had has always been hot and fresh, delivered by a friendly server in a reasonable amount of time, but to be honest, the food was pretty blah. Where flavor is concerned, it seems they have the idea that if something is spicy, that is all the flavoring it needs, but every dish I've had there--and I've had several--lacked flavor overall. The only exception to this shortcoming are the salsas. Very fresh and flavorful! I ended up putting one of the salsas on a burrito to give it a little pep! The thing is, if I'm going to spend the amount of money one ends up spending here, I want the food to be delicious, not just meh. The building and patio look lovely (certainly lovelier than the porn shop looked!), but if I could make one change to the facilities themselves, I'd get rid of that gravel lot they've got out front. Depending on the shoes I'm wearing or the weather, it can be very annoying to slosh through the thick, deep gravel lot. With better choices for tacos less than a mile away, not to mention at much better prices, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you're just looking for a few good drinks to go with your chips and salsa. read more

I've never stopped in this smallish Boulevard restaurant but glad I did today, for lunch. The place has a funky vibe and a youngish crowd clearly enjoying their food. I had the Southern Fried Fish tacos, that happened to be on special. The fish were nicely cooked with just enough crunch to not taste like a fried fish sandwich (I just gagged thinking about a McDonald's fish sandwich). It included a nice Spanish rice, nothing extraordinary but tasty, and the same could be said of the black beans. I sat at the bar and had great attention from a very fine bartender. She was efficient and checked on me once during the meal. Another lady, who may have been the manager, also stopped by to ask me if I was enjoying my lunch. I was! Looking forward to a return visit. If you eat a mostly vegetarian diet, like me, who wanders occasionally to seafood, there are not a lot of options on the menu. But I suspect based on watching guests in this busy space that you would enjoy many of the options. read more

I've been here 5 times so far and the food is excellent. The problem I have is with the service. Quick run down: We arrived around 12:05 for lunch - we had 3 people in our group. We got chips and guacamole, waters, and 2 Mexican cokes to start. We got everything we ordered (initially) fairly quickly. We ordered our food (2 burritos, and 2 tacos). Then things got slow... really really slow. It didn't seem particularly busy - the patio was nearly filled and there was one table seated inside when we were seated. We didn't see our waitress for about 35 minutes after we got our chips/drinks. Another waitress stopped by and brought us a new basket of chips. We never got a refill on water over the period of an hour and half that we were there. We ended up talking to our waitress and getting everything boxed up. I didn't expect to get my meal to go after being there over an hour. I also noticed another table behind us that also got their food to go due to the delay in getting their meal. We finally ended up getting our boxed up food and checks around 1:10 or so and left around 1:20. It's just upsetting that it took so long to get our food. Honestly I don't feel that the waitress is particularly at fault. She was perfectly pleasant and understanding. However we never got an explanation for the delay. I don't get the feeling that it was the waitresses fault. In the end I would just say to avoid this place for lunch just due to how long it takes. Dinner seems to go much more smoothly. Meh...it was ok, nothing special. The "dirty rice" had little flavor. I make better Spanish rice at home. Our server looked as if she wanted to be somewhere else. It shouldn't take my "stare down look of death" to finally bring our drinks. Here's a little tip...bring the alcohol quickly if you want a decent tip. Positives: the marinated grilled chicken tacos were tasty and had just the right amount of heat...for my palate anyway. Also, the poblano queso dip was good, although I thought it could use some tomatoes and maybe some cumin. It was served with flour tortillas instead of chips, which was a nice change. What I did like and take notice was that for their salsa and they give you three different types. But they are small and idk if you can get a refill on the salsa like you do on chips. I got the carne asada burrito. The portion of the burrito is fairly large which is good if you are really hungry. It had a lot of flavor just not something so good I would crave and come back to. My bf got the chorizo burrito, which isn't on the menu but they said they would make it for him, so that was awesome. He said the chorizo was good but not as spicy as he liked. I was so hoping that I would like the food here. I love the concept of a renovated porn/video shop as a restaurant. I also love Mexican food. But, alas, I did not. The space is great. Open, airy with a great patio. (It was raining so we ate inside, however). But the food didn't seem to match the beauty of the space. I had the carnitas burrito--slow roasted pork shoulder with dirty rice and drunken black beans. The first one came out and was cold in the middle. I sent it back and they made me a new one. It was marginally better. The pork wasn't very flavorful or spicy, and the addition of cold sour cream and salsa inside the burrito made for a strange experience. I would've preferred to have the cold condiments on the side. My boyfriend had the chicken burrito, which he said was fine but nothing to write home about. We both decided that there was nothing special about either meal that would make us run back, especially when we can get the same thing at Chipotle or Qdoba for less. I think we would revisit this place for a drink and a quick nosh before or after a movie if we could sit outside but not a go-to destination for lunch or dinner. read more

Ordered a margarita on the rocks and the sour mix was so strong and sugary it was barely drinkable, took 30 mins to finish it and I definitely did not want another. Wanted to ask my sever to add some water to it so I could actually drink it but she seemed burned out and over the shift, I get it's Monday but I work in the service industry as well and sometimes want to treat myself on my day off. Only writing this review because the margarita was $10 and so bad I'm still trying to get to sour mix taste out of my mouth an hour later and it's so gross it's making me feel sick. I was very excited to try this new taco restaurant in Richmond and was incredibly underwhelmed, which seems to be the beginning of a consensus, at least on Yelp. Basics: Nice atmosphere and service, bad tacos. Not good for a taqueria. This was my third trip to En Su Boca, yet the first time I was able to eat. First trip they were closed, despite not having any mention on their Facebook page, which I visited immediately before driving over there. Second time there was a 45 minute wait and I had to be somewhere. Not a surprising wait time with it being new. Third trip I left with time to spare and waited 30 minutes. Service was pretty quick. The menu was extensive but not huge. Prices were high, but also the norm for other taco places in Richmond. A big issue was that chips and salsa are not free. Plus, the front of the building says 25 cents yet there is definitely nothing on the menu for 25 cents. I understand the reference because the building used to be a 25 cent adult movie store, but if it's on the building then something should be that price. We ordered the Queso Fundido Dip ($8) with cheese, chorizo and peppers. It was good. The chorizo is homemade and was definitely spicy. There was not enough cheese for a queso dip and it was served with corn tortillas so it was more of a fill-your-own taco. For an entree we ordered the 10 tacos for $25 with two of each except the veggie. Here's where I had a big problem. The tacos were not good. The meat was dry and relatively bland. There was way too much of the meat and not enough toppings. The fish was fried well but was incredibly salty. I know the two corn tortillas is a thing but its too much tortilla. I left full but definitely not satisfied. Don't Look Back is a much better option if you're looking for a $3 taco. read more

I went here with a friend after seeing a movie down the street. It was my first time, and I had been looking forward to trying it. We were seated right away and chose outside. I've seen the other reviews, so I was aware of what to expect in a sense... I'm torn on the score... Service versus quality. Service: definitely a 3... We were seated quickly and placed an order for margaritas. It took at least ten minutes for them to arrive. We declined initial offering of food, to have a drink first. We got through those and most of our water and then waited.... For the server to come back so we could order drinks. The time in between just seemed to be too long. It wasn't packed and I saw several other servers, so it wasn't like she was alone. I'm really patient with these sort of things, but when my drinks are empty for over 5 minutes. That's a problem. So when the server came back after another 15 minute lull, we attempted to order the fish tacos. A happy hour special for that evening. We were told that it was too late... It wouldn't have been if she'd come around earlier. Whatevs, we still got the fish tacos and a few other things. More on that below. So it's nearing the end of happy hour for drinks (tacos til 6p, drinks til 7p) and we hadn't seen our girl. I wasn't gonna let this happen again, so we asked the server at the table next to ours to help out. She was quick and we got another round. Overall, it was good. I'll go back, but I felt like I had to keep ordering or asking for things so she'd come back in a timely manner. Quality of food/drink: 4 So as mentioned above, we ordered a few things Bottomless chips w/3 salsas- pretty self explanatory except our server made no distinction of the salsas. That's fine, but I heard other servers explain to other tables, so it would have been nice. FYI, the light peach colored one is super hot. Fish tacos-- good, would have liked more of the sauce and maybe the happy hour price. Will try other kinds Huevos Diablo-- deviled eggs with a smoky flavor and topped with fresh jalapeño. These were average. I was curious about them and glad to get that out of the way. You get 2 eggs, 4 egg halves for $4. Good price At this point my mouth is on fire, which is ok, but my drink is getting low. My friend and I both wait a little to order another round Chicken wings-- these were spicy but very good. The brine and sauce were tasty but not too messy. Overall, I will definitely go back. The outside seating was great. Parking was super easy. The first time I ate here we had a fantastic experience. Last night when I came in with my boyfriend, a female friend and a male friend. There were no open tables for four so we were seated at the bar and asked to wait. In the mean time the bartender approached only the two guys in our party for their orders. One of them didn't have his ID and was not served, while my boyfriend got one margarita. Over the next 45 minutes while we were there, myself and my female friend were not even acknowledged by your all female sexist bar staff. You need to speak to and serve every customer seated at the bar, regardless of gender. We watched a father and young son come in, sit next to us and get served almost instantly. We finally left after being ignored so long and went to another Mexican restaurant with much larger margaritas. Very disappointed in the way the service is run here. read more

The tacos are amazing and authentic. I had a chorizo, carne asada, and some kind of pork (not the carnitas). The carne asada was a four out of five, the pork was a five, and I would give the chorizo better than perfect if I could. I've been looking for these kind of tacos for a while, and here they are. Delicious! The bottomless chips are good, with three different salsas of various spiciness. The middle (green) one was perfect. The margaritas were nice and big, full pint glasses. Unless it's happy hour, get a special one not the house for $1 more. They also played some good new wave, punk, and ska music. The wait staff was very attentive, refilled my water often, had good knowledge of the menu, and were very friendly. The prices on the food were great, the margaritas a little expensive but they were big so I wouldn't call it overpriced. The outdoor seating was nice, but it was a little cold and breezy in the shaded seat we were first given, but a quick request to move to a table in the sun was met with a friendly response and they moved us immediately. We arrived at 5:45 and it was packed! We put our names on the list and were told it would be a 20 minute wait. 20 minutes later, I went to check with the host and he said there was one 2-top on the list still ahead of us. 20 minutes after that, we were starving and considering just ordering food at the bar. I went to check with the other host who was now at the host stand, and she said it would be at least another 20-30 minutes! Yikes! Not a fan of extremely inaccurate wait times. We decided to eat at the bar because at this point we'd invested so long in waiting and it was deep into dinner rush time. We got the chips and salsa and guacamole to start- all delicious! I got a burrito and my fiancé got tacos as entrees and they were all very good, too. I didn't catch the bartender's name, but shout out to her. She's blonde and was wearing overalls and a hat. She provided excellent service despite the bar area being slammed the whole time we were there. My margarita was excellent. read more

I stopped in around 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. It was a little busy but seating was immediate, the service was not. It took a few minutes before the waitress dropped off menus at our table and took our drink order. They don't have regular iced tea, they have sweet hibiscus tea (with agave syrup and mint) that is bright red in color and tasted like watered down kool aid. I could not taste the mint, no one at my table could. We ordered an appetizer (chips and salsa) that the waitress forgot to bring to table, until we asked about it. (She also forgot to refill our water after saying she would be right back) She brought the appetizer out with our carnitas and chicken tacos. Ehh. Everything was ok. I've had better, I've had worse. It was interesting to see the transformation of the building - it used to be a dirty book store. Honestly, I'd rather have the dirty book store over this place. Taco shmaco. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here. If I was in the mood for really good tacos, I'd go to La Cabana or Tio Pablo Taqueria or Habanero Mexican Grill or one of the many other really good taco places in Richmond. After all the hype coming from the restaurant, I was underwhelmed with the food. Taco fillings were dry and had little taste. Also something about the corn tortillas didn't seem right. The nachos were too oily but I supposed that's hard to avoid when they're freshly made? In addition, is this place trying to be some sort of alternative to Hooters? As I bit into my taco, I saw a very young waitress' butt cheeks poking out some super tight daisy dukes. Haha! Anyway, they've just opened recently so I'll give them 3 stars for now. Maybe I'll go back later for another try. On the upside, I liked the three salsas. Also loved the decor and patio. They really did a great job with renovating the place. read more
