I was very excited to try this new taco restaurant in Richmond and was incredibly underwhelmed, which seems to be the beginning of a consensus, at least on Yelp. Basics: Nice atmosphere and service, bad tacos. Not good for a taqueria. This was my third trip to En Su Boca, yet the first time I was able to eat. First trip they were closed, despite not having any mention on their Facebook page, which I visited immediately before driving over there. Second time there was a 45 minute wait and I had to be somewhere. Not a surprising wait time with it being new. Third trip I left with time to spare and waited 30 minutes. Service was pretty quick. The menu was extensive but not huge. Prices were high, but also the norm for other taco places in Richmond. A big issue was that chips and salsa are not free. Plus, the front of the building says 25 cents yet there is definitely nothing on the menu for 25 cents. I understand the reference because the building used to be a 25 cent adult movie store, but if it's on the building then something should be that price. We ordered the Queso Fundido Dip ($8) with cheese, chorizo and peppers. It was good. The chorizo is homemade and was definitely spicy. There was not enough cheese for a queso dip and it was served with corn tortillas so it was more of a fill-your-own taco. For an entree we ordered the 10 tacos for $25 with two of each except the veggie. Here's where I had a big problem. The tacos were not good. The meat was dry and relatively bland. There was way too much of the meat and not enough toppings. The fish was fried well but was incredibly salty. I know the two corn tortillas is a thing but its too much tortilla. I left full but definitely not satisfied. Don't Look Back is a much better option if you're looking for a $3 taco. read more

I went here with a friend after seeing a movie down the street. It was my first time, and I had been looking forward to trying it. We were seated right away and chose outside. I've seen the other reviews, so I was aware of what to expect in a sense... I'm torn on the score... Service versus quality. Service: definitely a 3... We were seated quickly and placed an order for margaritas. It took at least ten minutes for them to arrive. We declined initial offering of food, to have a drink first. We got through those and most of our water and then waited.... For the server to come back so we could order drinks. The time in between just seemed to be too long. It wasn't packed and I saw several other servers, so it wasn't like she was alone. I'm really patient with these sort of things, but when my drinks are empty for over 5 minutes. That's a problem. So when the server came back after another 15 minute lull, we attempted to order the fish tacos. A happy hour special for that evening. We were told that it was too late... It wouldn't have been if she'd come around earlier. Whatevs, we still got the fish tacos and a few other things. More on that below. So it's nearing the end of happy hour for drinks (tacos til 6p, drinks til 7p) and we hadn't seen our girl. I wasn't gonna let this happen again, so we asked the server at the table next to ours to help out. She was quick and we got another round. Overall, it was good. I'll go back, but I felt like I had to keep ordering or asking for things so she'd come back in a timely manner. Quality of food/drink: 4 So as mentioned above, we ordered a few things Bottomless chips w/3 salsas- pretty self explanatory except our server made no distinction of the salsas. That's fine, but I heard other servers explain to other tables, so it would have been nice. FYI, the light peach colored one is super hot. Fish tacos-- good, would have liked more of the sauce and maybe the happy hour price. Will try other kinds Huevos Diablo-- deviled eggs with a smoky flavor and topped with fresh jalapeño. These were average. I was curious about them and glad to get that out of the way. You get 2 eggs, 4 egg halves for $4. Good price At this point my mouth is on fire, which is ok, but my drink is getting low. My friend and I both wait a little to order another round Chicken wings-- these were spicy but very good. The brine and sauce were tasty but not too messy. Overall, I will definitely go back. The outside seating was great. Parking was super easy. The tacos are amazing and authentic. I had a chorizo, carne asada, and some kind of pork (not the carnitas). The carne asada was a four out of five, the pork was a five, and I would give the chorizo better than perfect if I could. I've been looking for these kind of tacos for a while, and here they are. Delicious! The bottomless chips are good, with three different salsas of various spiciness. The middle (green) one was perfect. The margaritas were nice and big, full pint glasses. Unless it's happy hour, get a special one not the house for $1 more. They also played some good new wave, punk, and ska music. The wait staff was very attentive, refilled my water often, had good knowledge of the menu, and were very friendly. The prices on the food were great, the margaritas a little expensive but they were big so I wouldn't call it overpriced. The outdoor seating was nice, but it was a little cold and breezy in the shaded seat we were first given, but a quick request to move to a table in the sun was met with a friendly response and they moved us immediately. I stopped in around 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. It was a little busy but seating was immediate, the service was not. It took a few minutes before the waitress dropped off menus at our table and took our drink order. They don't have regular iced tea, they have sweet hibiscus tea (with agave syrup and mint) that is bright red in color and tasted like watered down kool aid. I could not taste the mint, no one at my table could. We ordered an appetizer (chips and salsa) that the waitress forgot to bring to table, until we asked about it. (She also forgot to refill our water after saying she would be right back) She brought the appetizer out with our carnitas and chicken tacos. Ehh. Everything was ok. I've had better, I've had worse. It was interesting to see the transformation of the building - it used to be a dirty book store. Honestly, I'd rather have the dirty book store over this place. Taco shmaco. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here. If I was in the mood for really good tacos, I'd go to La Cabana or Tio Pablo Taqueria or Habanero Mexican Grill or one of the many other really good taco places in Richmond. After all the hype coming from the restaurant, I was underwhelmed with the food. Taco fillings were dry and had little taste. Also something about the corn tortillas didn't seem right. The nachos were too oily but I supposed that's hard to avoid when they're freshly made? In addition, is this place trying to be some sort of alternative to Hooters? As I bit into my taco, I saw a very young waitress' butt cheeks poking out some super tight daisy dukes. Haha! Anyway, they've just opened recently so I'll give them 3 stars for now. I had been here once for cocktails and an app and it was good, another time for just drinks, the margarita was good, so we decided to try it for dinner and sit outside on the deck. I have worked in food service for 18 years. I know how some things should go. We were sat with menus and silverware and we sat and sat as waitress after waitress walked by, no one giving any eye contact, no one giving a smile and a finger-raise with a mouthed "I'll be right there", nothing. Nothing. I was thirsty. I stopped the hostess who seemed to want to scurry by like a little mouse because she knew we had been sitting with nothing. I told her no one had been by and she said knew, and scurried away and brought back water at least. I asked if we could put in a drink order with her and she said the waitress was on the way. The waitress finally shows up, slowly approaching us as if we may be mad or this was her first table she'd ever waited on. We ordered our "signature cocktails" mine was pretty good but seemingly missing a component in the description but I liked it. He said his tasted like a sea-breeze. We told her we'd like to hold off on ordering, but really we just wanted to sip our drinks and decide where else to go. Not a basket of chips made it to out table. Not a special was told- and seeing how there are four entrees on the menu it would have behooved the waitress to tell us those up front, maybe something would have sounded so good we would have stayed. I doubt it though, my experiences in places with horrible customer service is that- you don't want to stay and you don't want to come back. I saw no manager on the floor as if all of these 22 year old girls are totally on top of their game- I assure you they are not. The main point is- these kids need better training. It's not cute to ignore people. I used to TRAIN waitstaff. I WAS a waitress. You SMILE and say "I'll be right with you" if you are in the weeds. Get someone else to take a drink order! I had the southern fried fish taco and it was fantastic! One of the better fish tacos I've had in RVA. I was worried that since the fish is fried, it would be heavy, but they do a great job of cutting that with the slaw and the squeeze of lime. The fish had a light and flavorful crust to it. During happy hour (I think from 3-6) tacos are $2-fish tacos are a steal at this price! We also got the chips with salsa, a green tomatillo and a tomato. Both were fresh tasting with great flavor coming through. The chips are very thick and reminded me of pita chips. My coworkers rave about the grilled street corn and that is a must try! read more

As most of the reviews I've read here so far, I was very excited about this restaurant, and very underwhelmed after my visit. The tacos were very dry, not only the tortilla, but the meat inside (I tried the chicken, the carne and the chorizo). They were also quite flavorless. I'm a big fan of Mexican food so I was looking forward to trying this place, especially since it's pretty close to my house and it's conveniently located near Bowtie, the diamond, etc. I'm a big Don't Look Back fan so I couldn't help but compare the two. I really like the vibe of the place; nice decor and big patio which--though we went in January--I'm assuming is pretty nice in warmer weather. Also plenty of space at the bar. For a small building they definitely made good use of the space they had. Service was friendly and attentive, definitely more so than most hipster joints in Richmond so that was a plus. Beer list was decent though I much prefer the selections at Don't Look Back as they're a little more adventurous. For an appetizer we got queso (dip? I think...). It was basically ground chorizo with a thick layer of melted cheese crust and in between some unmelted cheese with some flour tortillas. I don't know if that's how this dish is supposed to be but either way I wasn't a big fan. It seemed very cooked at the bottom and top and not so much in the middle. Kinda weird honestly. I had four different tacos (chicken, carnitas, carne asada, and chorizo) and my wife had fish tacos. I found all of my tacos to be pretty pedestrian and generally too spicy at least for my taste. I like some spice but want to taste interesting flavors as well and there really weren't any. Kinda tasted like something I could have made at home with a packet of taco seasoning. My wife liked her fish tacos ok but also said they were really spicy. I think overall I'd much rather go to DLB. I think they do a better job of balancing a lot of different flavors and textures into their tacos which makes them much more interesting and enjoyable to me. As much as I want to like en su boca I just didn't really. But I think if they toned down the spice a bit and added/accentuated some other flavors I would like it a lot more. I feel robbed every time Chipotle charges me $11 for a burrito and some chips. The flavor isn't all there. But anything is better than toxic waste burritos from Taco Bell so I settled. However last week I had an urge to be drunk and to set my mouth on fire with genuine Mexican food, thus I came here. For less I can get a giant burrito amongst a plethora of styles and a drink for not much more during happy hour, even then it's all relatively cheap. New place in the museum district on North Blvd. We needed a new Mexican/Latin place around here, everything else in that vein is a little tired and long in the tooth. For the 2nd night open it was undestandably busy and we had to wait for a table. The bar area was lively and the seating inside is a little cramped, but when they open the decks, I'm sure that will solve itself. Decent Craft Draught selection for 8 taps. The food we had was quite good.. Carne Asada Burrito, well put together, plenty of food for $11. My daughter had the Lamb and Chorizo Chili and a taco. Everything else on the menu looked good. Genuine Mexican food is very hard to find in the east coast. Let me be very clear, En Su Boca is NOT genuine Mexican gastronomy. This simple fact does not undermine the fact that the food coming out of the kitchen is a brilliant fusion of cultures, flavors and traditions. I would categorize En Su Boca as Mexi-Cali. I've dined here on multiple occasions and all their taco combinations truly amaze me. The southern fried fish, Yucatan, and Sloppy Jose are my favorite. I also really enjoy their outdoor dinning area, very casual and closed off to the street; making it feel as though you're in someones backyard. I will definitely frequent this place. Woah - was this hipster central today at lunch. I had no idea there were so many people who went day drinking on a Friday. This was my second try with En Su Boca for lunch. The 1st time the weather was nice enough to sit on the patio, but since today was only 47, we sat inside. Being seated was a little odd. We walked in and said we had 3 for lunch and then it took another 2-3 minutes to be offered the 4 top, right next to the door. As we were eating, we watched another couple just get pointed to a table. Not exactly sure why there's even a sign asking you to wait to be seated. Pretty much we did this ourselves. It also took longer to actually order this visit than our last one. Our waitress was pretty aimless and when she did come over to ask if we had any questions and one of my companions, very nicely, stated "no I think we are ready to order" she responded with "I am too" . Not the best way to get us to return. I have had the lunch special before which today was 2 fish tacos with rice and beans for $7. Warning! The fish is battered and fried so if that is not what you ware looking for in a taco, avoid. Today I had their version of a pork quesadilla which I found pretty tasty. The menu states that it is served with two salsas, but I really found that to be misleading. You received one good sized cup of their spiciest salsa and a dab of their mild salsa on top. And when I say dab, I mean dab.(a spot really). Our waitress also could not figure out how to split our check and mixed up my other two companions bills. What was disconcerting was the number of people randomly walking around the restaurant with their beers, going outside to smoke, and standing with the door open. My good friend came back into town after being away at boot camp and we needed a place to catch up on a Saturday night. We very quickly chose En Su Boca as we've all heard about this place through the Richmond grapevine. None of us were disappointed, in fact, we were all thoroughly impressed. We got sat very quickly even though it was clearly a slammed service night. Then after we ordered I would estimate we got our food within 10 minutes. All the food was hot, fresh, and vibrant in flavor. I personally chose the chicken tacos and ordered the Lavender Lemonade Cocktail. The chicken was juicy and powerful in seasoning and the toppings added a much-needed freshness and cooldown. The cocktail was very sweet and almost made a sweet tooth like me tap out after 2 sips. Thankfully my good friend next to me was even more of a sweet tooth and was able to down it in a short minute, effectively saving me wasting roughly $10. Unfortunately, it seemed like the server wanted nothing to do with my party, which maybe is fair considering it was a group of 7 somewhat loud 20-something "dude-bros". Besides those few hitches, the experience was pretty great, and I thank En Su Boca for giving my buddy a great welcome home! My friend brought me here and we got to sit outside in the patio area which was very laid back but nice. We ordered the bottomless chip and dip, which came with three different salsas: mild tomato salsa, medium guacamole, and spicy mango salsa. All three were delicious and the chips were crunchy and perfect! I also got the fish tacos, which were crispy on the outside and moist on the outside, topped with a flavorful cabbage concoction with lime and cilantro. I also got the wings, which I did not have high expectations for because they were 50 cent wings for happy hour. It exceeded my expectations and the flavor was unexpected. We walked over on a Thursday night around 8:30 and this place was packed, with a wait of about 30 minutes (or so the wait staff guessed after much discussion.). I'm thinking a little more organization needs to take place. We were seated outside and promptly met by our server, though she seemed to be a little flustered. We started with beers and the seafood ceviche, which was better than another particular restaurant, but still shy of our standards with too many onions. I really wanted to like this place! The location is very convenient to me, there is plenty of parking and I love tacos and pretty much all Mexican food. The restaurant is very well decorated, with just the right touches and an excellent atmosphere. We went on a monday night, and it was neither too quiet nor too loud. When we arrived, we were seated at a table by the window after we settled in, we were asked to move to a new table, because the table we were sitting at was "slanted." ok.. strange... but i appreciate them looking out for us (in the event that the table was so slanted our food rolled right off). I couldn't help but think-- maybe just fix the table? We were seated at another table, and were brought a little dish of some kind of salty snack. The waitress did not tell us what they were- just plopped them on the table like its no big. My date eats only vegetarian food, so we had to flag her down again to tell us what she brought. She said that it was hominy. The hominy snack was hard fried, and so damn salty that we ended up giving it back to her. It was like eating a very hard, very crunchy salt lick. After the Hominy, we ordered some food. I ordered a carne asada taco and a slow roasted carnitas. my date ordered a vegetarian burrito with soy chorizo, and we ordered some mexican street corn as well. The corn came- and they were definitely the highlight of the evening, it was that perfect balance of sweet and savory- and really made us hungry for more- and were reasonably priced at $6 for 2 ears of corn. The tacos came, and though the corn tortillas were small, the filling was abundant, and our food came very quick. I started in on the carne asada first- and found it tender, but a bit one note. The tacos were topped traditionally with minced onion and cilantro, and arbol chili sauce was just the right amount of spicy . The lime that came with the tacos was so very tiny- and so small i could not squeeze it. The lime was a key lime- and i got the smallest half of the smallest one. Some lime would have been a great compliment to both the tacos- but unfortunately i think it was intended as a garnish. The roasted carnitas were next. I took my first bite of the tender pork topped with green chili sauce and minced onion and cilantro and thought- Hmm, that is spicy. My next bite had me begging for mercy, and i could not finish it- though i was still hungry. When the waitress came back to check on us- she shamed me about the taco because i told her it was very spicy! i only ordered 2 tacos- and half of one was going back to the dish room- which should have told her something was up. haha! I can take a little ribbing, but unfortunately, nothing is listed on the menu as spicy/not spicy/ a little spicy/ a lot spicy- so you're sort of taking your chances. I can handle some heat, but when something is inedible- you're letting your customers down, or at the very least- not doing a good job telling people what you're serving. Chili peppers of all kinds have different levels of spice depending on how well they grew, so i think Its up to a chef to mitigate that spiciness, and make sure a dish is palatable- so this can't really be used as an excuse. My date's burrito was "just ok" he said. Overall- the place is cute and i really want to like it. The service was attentive for sure, and almost overly so- and in Richmond that is a nice thing to find. I'll go back for sure, but if i'm really craving tacos, i might just take that long ride down Powhite to La Milpa or Christina's. TLDR? Eat the corn, have some drinks- enjoy the neighborhood, but I don't think this will be your new favorite taco place. read more

This is my FAVORITE restaurant in all of Richmond. The atmosphere/environment is the #1 best part of En Su Boca. The place is always packed and everyone is having a great time. The outdoor seating is perfect! It's one of the few places in Richmond where you can enjoy the beautiful weather, have drinks, and eat delicious/decently priced food. Also, I love nachos and have tried them everywhere, and they have the BEST nachos that i've ever had. Even the simple chips and salsa are some of the best i've ever had. The chips are a bit thicker and delicious. Lastly, YOU CAN BRING YOUR DOG (outside)!! It can't really get any better than that. read more

This is another place I really wanted to like. The decor is nice and the place is very clean. We came on a semi busy weekend day and decided to sit at the bar. The bar staff were very disinterested in helping us. Asked if it was our first time and proceed to just leave us alone. Which was odd due to the fact most places use that as an opportunity to tell us something about the place either food or tequila. When were finally approached back we started with chips and salsa. The chips were ok but the show stopper for me is the Habanero Salsa. This was an amazing salsa with some serious heat to accompany it. Wife wanted asked if they did tequila flight which the bartender ended up snickering (pretty much summed up the service). For food I ordered the Grilled Chicken Burrito and my wife ordered the Fried Fish, Carnitas and Chorizo tacos. We split the meals to get a good sample of what they had. The Burrito was solid from the standpoint of size of food and the items in the burrito. For some reason the tortilla was very bland and actually liked it better when we pulled everything out of the burrito. The Chorizo and Carnitas were average in my opinion. The Fried Fish was very good though (best of the three). Again I really want to like this place. I will probably give them another go just on the fact that I really liked the Habanero Salsa. Love En Su Boca - their happy hour, the food, and their style is what keeps me coming back! Well, and their margaritas! I have really only ever been here for dinner or happy hour and every time I have been here I have had a great experience. I love their patio area so that is definitely a go-to if the weather is warm. The nachos and wings are among some of my favorite items. The guac is delicious and the burritos are a good size - will definitely leave you full and may have some leftovers to take home. Great price, menu isn't huge but everything I have tasted has been delicious! The Mexican food is really good and the drinks are too. I know it sounds ridiculous but as other reviews also mentioned, you should order the chips and salsa. Pretty good taco place! I had ordered the housemade chips and salsa and tacos. I wasn't a big fan of the chips because they are super thick, hard and a little dark for my taste. They weren't bad but I like chips to be thin. It came with 3 salsa's that were really good! For my entree, I got 4 tacos for $10. I ordered the chicken, carnitas, carne asada and fried fish. The tacos were really good! You have to eat them fast because the soft shell gets damp and starts to rip because they're a lot of juices especially in the grilled chicken and carnitas. They also have Mexican coke and sprite that are delicious! My BF ordered the churro doughnuts for dessert. They looked like little donut holes but deep fried. They were okay, just tasted like a fried donut hole with cinnamon and sugar, nothing really special. Our service was pretty good but our waitress kept forgetting some stuff like I asked for hot sauces and she never brought them. She was really nice though, so it wasn't a big deal. First time here. Let's start with the good. The inside is attractive and the music is good. We sat at the bar and our waitress was less than friendly. The food came quick which was nice. Came here to see a show and had some drinks in the meantime. Setting up a full band inside makes the space pretty cramped, but they managed to make it work, sort of. Their gin selection was better than most places I've been. I didn't try any food, so I can't comment on that. read more
