Blandest Mexican restaurant in America. New to the neighborhood, en su boca was on my list of restaurants to give a shot. When conversing with locals that I was going there, their comments included "eh" and the food is "ok". They weren't lyin! 2 stars is really for the drinks - but how can you screw up a frozen margarita or classic beer-a-rita with an amber. Restaurant had a cool vibe that the food didn't come close to matching. Mild house salsa tasted more like spaghetti sauce. The most distinguishing taste on some of the tacos was the cilantro - not ideal! May go back for drinks during happy hour, or if I'm craving cilantro. read more

Happy hour is great. We got 4 tacos, 8 wings, and bottomless chips and salsa, and it came out to be about $20. We ate on the patio and it was a perfect atmosphere. The food was good, but the tacos weren't the best ever. Still, great value and atmosphere and good food. read more

This is my go to spot with my wife for dope tacos, but my last visit really stuck with me. It was a fairly busy brunch hour on Sunday and my wife and I were seated at the bar. We ordered a couple delicious drinks and some breakfast tacos before we headed to a movie. We noticed our bartender Zane pouring what appeared to be some delicious cocktail and after inquiring he gave us a taste. The strawberry Agua Fresca was incredible, so we ordered the margarita and in the mimosa versions. He exemplified excellent customer service and made our experience that much better. The tacos are always fresh and easily the best in town. Do yourself a favor and go sit at the bar on Sundays. You won't be disappointed. read more

I'm sad to say that as frequent patrons to En Su Boca we have been a little let down the last few visits. Yesterday the place looked downright dingy. Menus have food all over them, the table was dirty, floors icky, and flies all over the place - eew! The food is still very good (but I've noticed more spicy lately), however the service and ambience lately shouts, "Hey you middle ager, you're not cool enough for us hipsters!" Yesterday it was not crowded, but took forever to get service-with-a-'tude (as was last visit when we had to ask to turn down the music.) I used to love the easy hip vibe, even though my time was decades ago, and felt comfortable bringing any age patron along. Something I really liked about RVA when I moved here from SF 10 years ago was that people weren't jaded and "too good to be a server." Can we get back to that, please? My favorite for Mexican, hands down! Bustling atmosphere. It's nice that they have a small parking area. Street parking is easy here too.

The tacos here are pretty good and the location is awesome. I love the patio seating though because they allow dogs. The servers usually even bring a bowl of water for my dog. The service is pretty great most of the time. The chips and salsa are good as well, a good variety! read more

My mother and I stopped in when we were on a road trip back home (Tucson, AZ) from my college in the NE. Tucson has a reputation for AMAZING Mexican food, so we were a little skeptical to try some so far away from the Southwest, but are we sure glad that we did! We started out with chips, guac, & salsa, all of which were delicious. The chips themselves had great flavor, the guac was finished before our tacos got to the table, and the salsas had some nice flavors, including some nice heat on the spiciest one. For dinner we shared a 10 taco platter (saving some for lunch the next day) and got one of every flavor except for the Rajas. The meats had excellent flavor and the soy chorizo was to die for. The homemade tortillas tasted excellent and the tacos overall had great, fresh flavor. The atmosphere of the restaurant was fun and our server took great care of us. However, the wait can get insane here, once I was told we'd have a 45 minute wait and it took around two hours for my group to be seated. We were not offered chips or anything while we waited. I'm sure the food is delicious. It smelled so good. But....when we put our name on the list the man told us it would be 15 minutes. Ok, we're fine with that wait. About 5 minutes after we put our name on the list, a party of 8 walked in. After waiting about 5 minutes, the party of 8 was seated before us. Wait...what?!? The man at the host station told me it was "manager protocol" to seat parties of 5 or more at the open table and because we were a party of 4, we would have to wait longer even though our name was on the list FIRST...before the larger party. I like all of the food here. Burritos and fish tacos are decent. The bar tending staff could use some work with friendliness, timeliness, and overall efficiency. Also, they seem to talk mostly amongst themselves. If you sit at a table you will receive far better service than sitting at the bar. I used to think it was such a great place (after the first two visits), but once I started going regularly (and eating at other places), I started noticing certain things that dropped my rating: the bartenders being the biggest offenders. For some reason, even when they are being "nice" to you, you cannot help but feel rubbed the wrong way: they make it quite clear they are only talking to you because it is their job. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place. It is my go-to hunger tasty food spot. I love to sit outside and it's semi- dog friendly out there as long as your pal isn't crazy or aggressive. Service isn't always top notch but that is mostly because of the excellent taco specials that tend to attract a lot of crowds. I will say however that NATE is easily the best and most consistent. Not like I go there 1-2 times a week *cough* but he always knows exactly what we're going to order. There is also a very cool bartender who I don't know the name of but whose hair is of a glorious auburn recalling Jimmy Paige and Al Yankovic. Of the bars I have attended in Richmond he is very receptive and aware of his surroundings.Of course you have to start with the bottomless chips (even if your stomach isn't bottomless the crunch is so satisfying and the price is right). They come with three heat varieties of bottomless salsa. I almost always get the four taco plate special with the fish taco and something else while my dining partner is a purist and prefers the carne asade (sp?) tacos. The margaritas are killer as they should be, they have an incredible selection of tequila so if your a connoisseur this is the place. Writing this review makes me want to go today. MMmm. Stopped in for a quick lunch before heading across the street to River City Tattoo.(Another 5 Star business) Bartender on the spot with a wonderful Tanqueray and Tonic. (It can be done poorly) Ordered 4 tacos, dealers choice, it was quick, tasty and a lot. Could have gotten by with 2. Sitting at bar, bartenders tend to get their orders quicker, man next to me had a burrito. Big as his head. Will def be back. An extensive high zoot tequila collection deserves exploring. read more

I went here for the Happiest Hour special,mid week. This food was very authentic, we've made it one of our rotating spots! The place was packed, inside and out. The parking is not so great, but we managed. Between my party, we had veggie (black bean & rajas) tacos, fish tacos, carne asada and one of the chicken varieties -the fish was not a favorite. Holy heck is this place delicious. Every time I pass it, I'm reminded by how much I want to try it because the atmosphere looks so cool. When we got there, it was PACKED but we were served at the bar and seated fairly quickly. There were a ton of fun and delicious cocktails to choose from. Then, we started with the corn and ceviche and I would definitely come back just to have the corn again-- it was blackened which I love and so flavorful. I had the fish tacos which were great. So I was driving by and decided to try a taco. Bad choice. I had a chorizo taco and it was kinda tasteless. The place is ok, but more of a sit down place than a taco shop. Stopped in tonight on our way home from a Downtown visit. The food arrived ridiculously fast and we promptly dove into the sweet potato fries which were DELICIOUS! We could have made a meal on them alone. I had a fried fish taco and black bean taco. The fish was first-rate; the bean was just so-so. I guess there's not much you can do with black beans. We love this place and love sitting outside for lunch. This is definitely not a relaxing venue, though; it's tiny and very, very loud. Tonight, unfortunately, there was an obnoxious millennia who had had a few too many tequila sips. Had it not been about to storm we would have retreated to the outside deck, which is much more charming. All-in-all we love it here. It's a combination of professional, energetic, and eclectic. Great food. It is insanely loud inside, so eat outside if the weather is nice. The noise inside is like having a pot over your head with someone beating on it with a running chainsaw. Randy and team did it again. Amazing, unique food. We had incredible burritos and the corn appetizer. The salsas were great and three are served with the hot fresh chips. Staff was very accommodating to make kids cheese quesadillas for our little ones. They loved the Oreo Popsicles as much as the adults love the tiramisu. read more
