This was my first time ordering from this restaurant. I ordered takeout (buffalo wings and fries). The wings I received were not buffalo and barely had any flavor. They also seemed a bit overcooked. Overall, I couldn't eat the chicken. Given that I paid $15 for just 4 wings, I expected better. The fries were good though, although those seemed to be a bit overpriced as well at $12. I do not plan to order from this restaurant again during my stay in LA. There are better, and more reasonably priced, options nearby for dining. read more

I used to come here with my girl pre-COVID and really enjoyed the place. We decided to come back today to the sound of live music and an amazing ambiance! Our server Julio was absolutely amazing. He always arrived on time when we needed refills and had amazing customer service. I appreciated that he was honest with the menu and gave us his take on what he recommended especially due to the fact that the menu had changed since the last time we were here. I had the carnitas tacos and my girl had the fettuccine short rib pasta and I recommend both of them. I've lived in LA for about 3 years now. In that time, I've had some interesting experiences with Engine that are atypical for my experiences in LA. Its right around the corner from my house and in prime real estate on the corner of 7th and Figueroa so perhaps my expectations are the issue here, but I'm happy to get into it. The Good: Location and atmosphere. Junkies aside, this is a pretty venue with easy access from the central shopping/business district of downtown Los Angeles. The interior seems fit for an upscale dining experience (despite the notable lack of diners) and the staff seem friendly and professional. The Bad: The food is just 'aight'. Honestly, I believe that's the biggest thing holding this venue back outside of the positively gross junkie hangout right outside. I've had multiple items on the menu at this point, and despite having all of the right words on the menu, the food is aggressively mediocre at every turn. The drawback really isn't the taste of the food, but the combination of that factor combined with the price being charged. While an impossibly greasy burger may be worth a trip to Wendy's, its not what one expects from a $35 menu item supposedly cooked to order. The Business: I've unsuccessfully tried to eat at this venue several times while I've been in this city, usually in the evenings. A question about when they close will be met with a vague answer, and its happened that I've came for dinner well before close, only to find that the kitchen had closed early. There is far too much discretion surrounding the hours of operation and online reviews seem to indicate that its a pattern. I think that this venue would thrive with the right management, but its perpetual emptiness tells a story that's hard to ignore. Also, the black guy who 'works the door/sits and drinks' should either be given a proper posting (and outfit) or not employed at all. Dressed like someone off of the street in a hat and hoodie, he clashed so completely with the atmosphere that its unclear whether or not he's working there, which makes his clearly untrained interactions with customers more awkward than they have a right to be in an otherwise empty restaurant. We were staying across the street and, once we found out this was an actual restaurant and not a fire station, decided to try this unique place. The inside is gorgeous and very peaceful. It's cool to see the redone firehouse while you wait on your food. Menu was diverse but not too wild so there's super fancy stuff all the way down to a burger and fries. We got the hummus for an app - best we've ever had - along with lamb chops and truffle ravioli. Finished with bread pudding and some wine. Total bill was extremely affordable for LA. I would say that this wasn't great for a group dinner as we were seated in one long row, and were not really able to talk to individuals who weren't right next to us. Food was good. I ended up with one of the specials, I believe pan fried halibut. Nothing special in terms of flavor but perfectly cooked. Service was good, they waiters were very attentive, but the restaurant was also almost completely empty, so that must have helped. Such good food! I had the braised short rib fettuccine, which was excellent. The short rib was tender and went beautifully with the cheesy fettuccine sauce. Since this was dine LA, I got it with a crispy Caesar salad. My friend had the wagyu burger and fries, which she loved. It was really big and juicy. Chrissy E provided us great service. I ordered a "lemon bar" to go, but it came in a cup and was surprisingly small for the price. It was delicious, but I hope it is larger if ordered in the restaurant. A friend of mine has told me many good things about this place so when we were around the area we decided to give it a shot. They have valet parking but we parked at a parking structure. We walked in and got seated right away at a booth. It's a old fire station that was turned in to a restaurant. It has somewhat a look like an old forestation and I thought it was cool they had some firefighter helmets and a jacket hanging in a coat rack that gave it that extra touch. Our server was very nice and was very attentive when filling our drinks and asking if we needed anything. We looked over the menu and placed our order. Mac & Cheese - We started off by sharing their mac & cheese. The mac had bacon, cheddar, mozzarela and bleu cheese. I have to say I think this was the best thing that we had here. It was very cheesy and hot and the bacon was cooked perfectly. Steak sandwich - New your steak with caramelized onions, lettuce and cheese on a french roll. I honestly think I have had better at a fast food restaurant. The steak was to be cooked medium but had little to no pink in the center. The cheese was American cheese but taste like craft singles. I think it would have been better off with out the cheese. It came with fries but I asked for garlic fries and they were good with a side of ranch. The ranch was not that good. It had a sour taste it to so we decided to move on with ketchup. It also came with a side of slaw that was ok. Shrimp Po'Boy - Fried shrimp, tomato, lettuce on a french roll. My wife had this and said it was also just ok. The shrimp were cooke ok but she said she has had better. The Po'Boy came with a side of garlic fries but she felt that there was not enough garlic in those fries. It was a good experience and we always like to try new places. We were super excited to try this place out as it was a quirky looking place as is most places in dtla. In the city filled with dining options we finally made our way here. Let's start off with the ambiance. Ummmm...it left a lot to be desired. It's pretty bland inside with the exception of the industrial looking walls and the fire pole coming down from the ceiling. I definitely wouldn't have guessed it was a fire station if it weren't for the huge vintage photo of the fire station back in its golden days. The carpets are drabby and actually sticky. Which was pretty gross. The bar area was awkward and the tv's were blaring along with the music in the restaurant. I'm not sure what the restaurant is going for...a bar or a dining experience? I'm was left clueless. Now...for the food and dining experience. Another complaint that I have is the happy hour is only served in the bar area. Really? Almost every restaurant you go to allows happy hour ANYWHERE! To each there own but I don't wanna have to sit in the bar area where there are Loud tvs blaring and loud business men drunk after work. I would like to chose where I sit. Anyways, we ended up sitting in the restaurant area because of the noise. I had the steak sandwich with spicy fries and my boyfriend had the chicken sandwich with regular fries. Unfortunately our food was pretty mediocre. The meat was tender, the aoli was great, but the caramelized onions left more to be desired and the lettuce was nasty tasting I took them out, and the tomatoes were a little sour. The fries were soggy but had a good kick. My boyfriend said his sandwich was just ok and didn't pop or anything. For the prices you carry I do expect something with more umph or an ambiance that makes me feel like "I will definitely be back". But it was just a boring experience. The server was ok but didn't check in on us once. We all of a sudden got a new server ask us if we were done and refill on our drinks and I saw our first server leave out the door. Never mentioned he was leaving or handing off the table in front of us. Kinda unprofessional. What you are left with is a tired old replica of a firehouse with waiters that look like gangbangers and a menu that is lacking of ALL the great items of old. So we ordered, and got instant iced tea and cold instant coffee for $5.00 a meal that was not interesting and a little pricey, in a neighborhood of dirty sidewalks, homeless people, and trash everywhere and parking one block away. I'm so glad they're open! The menu has completely changed from what it was before, but the food is still exceptional. My husband and I went to Engine Co yesterday for lunch and we will definitely be returning. The outside patio area they set up is so cute. I ordered the cauliflower steak and it was incredible. I literally ate everything on my plate, that's how amazing this dish was. My husband ordered the salmon plate and he is still talking about it this morning lol. Everything was perfect. Growing up in this area, I have heard of this establishment for a longtime; however, I never had been to eat. I am in town on a mini-vacation and I met up with a classmate of mine from high school that works in the area and I am staying down the street. We met at 11:25 and we had reservations for 11:30, and we were seated immediately. The service was outstanding to say to the least. My friend ordered the Banh Mi sandwich with Fries, while I ordered the Korean Fried Chicken with Fries and both of us enjoyed the sandwiches. I did not order dessert, but my friend wanted to try the pumpkin cheesecake that is not your ordinary cheesecake, but two small cheesecakes that we split and strawberries and whipped cream and it was amazing. Decent comfort food in a cool location. If you plan on driving I would probably not go here since parking stinks! Even parking with Valet was a pain in the keister. However, if you are in a nearby hotel or work downtown and want a bite to eat I would suggest this place for sure if you want comfort food in a cool space. Unfortunately it's the restaurant side that has slid down hill fast. My Medium Rare burger came out cremated, cold and congealed. After that everything else paled. I went with a friend on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only ones there. Then another family came in. I should have known something was up. The server was very nice. I ordered the crab cake sandwich and my friend had the turkey burger. I was very disappointed with my crab cake. Described in the menu as "lump crab," mine came as if it was put in a good processor. The taste was more like catfish than crab. I ate it because I was hungry and tired, but it was the worst crab cake I ever had! The cornmeal and seasoning was spicy, but the overall taste was definitely not crab!! My friend's turkey burger was big and while it tasted okay, it was nothing special. I'll pass on Engine Co. 28 next time and find another fine dining restaurant in the area. I can't recommend this one. read more
