We arrived at 7p.m for a Saturday night reservation and the place was packed to the gills! Unfortunately it was too cool and windy to enjoy the outdoor dining areas-which would have been our preference. While the menu is not extensive, it does seem to have a bit of something for everyone, but we were surprised there are not more seafood options offered. Fresh flowers on the table was a nice touch, but the place was a bit too dark-at least where we were seated. The open concept kitchen with counter seating-which looked like a bar but was not-seemed a tad strange. Draft beer ordered was o.k. We ordered coconut carrot soup (which was very good but lukewarm), Maple Sriracha wings (good, but not even a hint of maple detected), cornbread (very good) and fish and chips with coleslaw (substituted potato salad for fries) was good. Fish tasted fresh and potato salad and coleslaw were generous and most tasty portions. Parking areas are small and cramped and I suppose most park on the adjacent streets. After years of walking past the Engine Room I can finally say now I finally tried it! The vibe is really nice. I enjoyed the ambiance. However on a Saturday afternoon it was extremely busy so our server was all over the place/ nowhere to be found throughout our time there. I ordered their bbq chicken sandwich but asked for no mayo. Apparently that was an issue because my sandwich came back with zero bbq sauce on it... when it was a bbq chicken sandwich. After waiting sometime for my server I decided to ask the (more attentive and nicer) one that the party next to us had and asked for a side of bbq sauce because my bbq chicken sandwich had none on it. He was so nice and was immediately sympathetic and said he would tell my server about the issue. After receiving 2 small cups of bbq sauce (not from our original server) it was clear this sandwich wouldn't be hitting the spot like it should have. What bothered me was the lack of care our actual server had towards my problem. I asked her how my sandwich came without bbq and it wasn't until I prompted the question that she was like "oh I wrote no sauce so that's why." I just was not a fan of this server at all. Great service, big space and delicious comfort food! we got the warm scallop dip, chicken melt, wings and pulled pork sandwich. Definitely a lot of food but everything was delicious. The dip was warm and comforting. Wings were not too spicy and had a nice crunch. I'm always a fan of thanksgiving themed sandwiches and the chicken melt reminded me of it with the cranberry sauce and house made "stuffing bread". This place is just off Main St downtown Mystic. It's was a Saturday evening and this place was crowded. We managed to get a table in the bar without a wait. The waitress was busy so not very attentive. She was pleasant and did pass by, so easy enough to grab her if you needed to. Water was brought to the table without ice. There are lots of draft beers on tap. The menu is small, but something for everyone. From fish and chips to burgers. My husband got a double burger. His first impression was that it's small...it's 2 3oz burgers. Upon his first bite he was amazed. It was delicious!! He didn't leave a crumb behind. I got the chicken melt sandwich. It was also delicious, although my bread fell apart. The fries are fresh and perfect. We also got the cowboy dip...a cream cheese dip with candies jalapeños. It was different but tasty. Ok... Ok... Can I tell you how much I enjoyed my experience in Mystic Connecticut. I believe a big part of what makes Mystic Connecticut such a wonderful place to visit is its hidden gems. I must tell you, one such gem is the Engine Room. There is so much to say here but what I will say is that, I had a hard time deciding where to eat in the area. It's not like Mystic has lots of places, and when tourists are in town - like every day. You might find it had to get a table like I did. In spite of the crowds, I persevered and found my diamond in the ruff. The Engine is not on the main strip but adjacent to the water near the crossing bridge. I walked up and received a warm welcome. My waitress (could have been one of the managers) was so nice. Honestly, she made me feel as if I was having a meal in her home. I opted to sit outside and although there was a tiny bit of drizzle, I pushed through and enjoyed my meal and cocktail. All that said, it was the chicken and cornbread like waffle that stole the show. Wow!! I've never had a chicken and waffle made with a cornmeal batter. It was so delicious. I don't think I want a chicken and waffle unless it's made like that every again. I'm telling all who will listen, go to the Engine Room and order the Chicken and Waffle. read more

Every time I'm in mystic I end up here for brunch and it never disappoints! This time we got the biscuits and gravy to share and I got the double smash burger. This is the second time I have been here and got 5s both visits. For you whiskey drinkers, this place has allocated whiskey like Pappy's and Blantons at fair prices. Went there with a party of seven that had reservations. When we got there, they had lost our reservations, with no tables available for the next half hour! So we decided to sit outside, but the tables were too small to accommodate our group, and the staff told us we couldn't move the tables together to we could be in one group. After a while there was a corner table available that could tightly fit us all in with barely enough elbow room to move. Then after a looooong wait for our food, we were wondering why there was no salt and pepper on the table. After tasting our selections, we figured they must have dumped them all into our servings as all of us complained about the saltiness of the food. I guess that's their way of selling more beer? Engine Room was a go to sure bet for me pre-pandemic. I had mostly stayed away or arrived to long waits due to throngs of staycationers" the last few years. We finally made it back for my birthday tonight, and sadly were very disappointed. The menu has changed significantly and some of our favorite items, like the chicken and dumplings and brussels sprouts are no longer on the menu. It used to feel more inventive and focused on farm to table, but now the menu feels very average. Lots of burgers and chicken sandwiches. We tried the Cornbread and 3 sandwiches -- pulled pork and two chicken (barbecue and spicy). The barbecue was very one note with no textual contrast. It was crying out for something crunchy or acidic to give it life. Just soft on soft and not much chicken. The pulled pork had no recognizable shreds of meat or texture, just a brown mass. Worst part is our favorite cornbread has completely changed. The formerly fluffy, tall squares are now flat and hard. The fries were mostly broken and overcooked. Portions were skimpy. We have always loved this place and as folks with a family member in the restaurant industry, we really try to look for the good. But when a place has changed, we feel it's important to offer. Constructive feedback to improve. Not sure what has taken place but the food doesn't feel special anymore. We went to the Engine Room after hearing rave reviews. We were able to make a reservation and went the night of the Kentucky Derby It is a very dimly lit place, which I think goes along with the aesthetic, but I imagine would take away from the scenic views of Mystic. I started with a Fisher Island Lemonade, which was served over ice with a lemon! They have a good variety of beers, bourbon, and fun cocktails. I ordered the mac and cheese for $7, which I thought was a very good price and although the portions look small, I had extra to bring home. I thought it was really good and I loved the type of pasta they selected for this dish. I also tried the Hush Puppies, which were a bit dry without the maple butter, but tasted good with the added butter. It came with five hush puppies and I brought one home. Overall, I enjoyed this spot and recommend going on a drab day. I appreciated how both entrees were $15 total, which I think was a great price! read more

Spent the day in Mystic today, on a day trip from Boston. Stopped into Engine Room for lunch on the recommendation of a friend. The ambiance is terrific, the staff all smiles and super-friendly. Service was fast and attentive to water, drinks, and food. We ordered apps and meals for the three of us. Cowboy Dip was good and spicy, with quite a kick, but a sweetness that was welcome. Delish. Their burgers were great, cooked to order and very tasty, though on the smallish side. We had a Mushroom Mae burger and a Grassfed Summer Burger. The sides we ordered were the macaroni salad and potato salad. Both were VERY good, but both were WAY TOO SALTY. The freshness of the veg and ingredients in those sides was overpowered by the salt. It was difficult to eat them. Half of the added salt would have made them perfect. We also ordered Fish and Chips. For a main, this was really disappointing. The breading was good, crispy and crunchy, but where was the fish? The piece of fish we got was paper thin, and completely vanished inside the crust of the breading. Seasoning was fine, but where's the fish? All in all, we enjoyed our lunch. The waitstaff and atmosphere made it work. A nice place to eat! read more

We visited Engine Room last month to give my boyfriend the quintessential Mystic experience. He loved it and a month later, he's still talking about it. Sunday brunch, yelp did not disappoint with the recommendations for this place. Super unique and very popular for a sunday brunch, parking was hard to find. Hint: there is additional parking around back! I will say we waited over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, but that was the only downside. I had the ER breakfast sandwich which was very good. The bolo bun was very fresh. My friend had the chicken sandwich which looked very good, I would like to get that the next time. I will say the crepe did look small and disappointing, we were expecting something more unique/ bigger serving size. Waitstaff was friendly. First time in Mystic, CT. Walked 20 minutes with my fiancée to experience the great downtown area of Mystic. Was recommended to stop by Engine Room by our hotel. Customer Service was phenomenal both from the hostess staff and our waitress, Rachel. If you do happen to stop in, the food is fantastic, we definitely recommend the burgers and their fries! I had a "pink" Pinot Grigio and my fiancée had a prosecco for celebration! The only reason for the 4 star rating is because we didn't have time to explore their entire menu start to finish. We sat out in their patio as the space was peaceful and intimate. The inside was boisterous from the bar. Ok, I get it. It's Mystic. We were there the day after Christmas. Engine Room professes to be a good place for burgers, beer, and whiskey. My husband had the whole chicken which was really overcooked. It looked it, too. My son had the Mae burger - cheese and mushrooms were excellent. Burger was overcooked. My fish and chips - one piece was perfect. The other was overcooked. Everyone's French fries were overcooked and inconsistently seasoned. Beer was good. Parking tip: the restaurant has two small lots, one right in front of the restaurant. If they are full and there's no street parking, continue up Church Street to the Catholic Church. Make a donation to support their rebuilding fund - totally nice. Parking at the LAZ lot is really expensive, so do your part to respect the church's hospitality. Given that it is Mystic & it wasn't crazy overpriced, 3 stars. read more

The mix was delicious and it was enormous. The biscuit was damn good too. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. This thing was enormous as well. The cream cheese and pepper jelly is genius. The fried chicken and waffles were good but not the greatest. Wish it was a bone in chicken rather than a chicken breast. The waffle was also ok. Certainly not the best or the worst chicken and waffle. The bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was unlike anything I've seen. Toasted focaccia bread with thick cut bacon inside. So with covid still being a thing. Its nice to take a little trip around your state.. Try new places. So I met up with one my close friends to try the engine room. We shared a couple of appetizers. She had the Carlina Hush puppies. She enjoyed them . I did not try those. I was busy enjoying the sweet potato soup and the brussel sprouts. We shared the Brussels sprouts and each ordered a sweet potato soap. Brussel sprouts had a sweet glaze of maple pecan and mustard. With fried onion. Very good flavor combo. I also order the mushroom mae burger. Which was a great flavor combo. Everything was premium Gourmet ingredients. Beef was local farm along with the cheese which jist creamy and melted. Yum. Ambiance is nice, but the acoustics of the room are a bit rough. Very loud with more than a few tables full. Food was mid at best, despite a fairly diverse menu. I'll admit the hostess and both waitresses we met were all great so the service was very nice. Beer list could be improved, plenty of options but none particularly interesting. Chose the engine room for dinner after reading some good reviews. We were in the area for some college tours. It was hard to find a place to park as the lot in front and back were full. I figured it would be a wait but we got seated right away. The atmosphere is that of a loud pub. Probably not what you want if you're on a first date but fine other wise. Decor was pretty neat I thought, somewhat of an industrial feel with some cool old wood work. Menu is standard pub food. The beer menu is pretty robust with plenty of local offerings. I got a Crispy roll lager which was very good. I went with the baby back rib dinner. It came with their own potato salad and Cole slaw which were both excellent. The ribs were just meh though. The sauce was good with a nice a spicy kick but there was an odd coating on the ribs. The ribs were also over cooked and a little tough. It's curious they don't give you a little piece of corn bread with the meal, it seems a bit of a lacking plate. My wife got their standard burger and enjoyed it quite a bit. My daughter ordered the side portion of Mac n cheese and a side of cornbread. She was pleased with both. I tried the cornbread, it was amazing! Our waitress wasn't very attentive unfortunately, looked like she was covering a bunch of tables. Had to ask twice for another set of silverware. She never offered to refill our water, we had to ask. Our bill sat on the table for a good 15 minutes waiting for her to run our card. Pretty annoying.All in all a cool spot for dinner though . I'd skip the ribs next time though. read more

Great spot for drinks (huge whiskey selection) the food is amazing. We sat at the kitchen bar and watched Nick the head chef butcher a few cows for fresh steaks and meat for the restaurant. As a Coast Guard chef I was blow away with his meticulous butchering skills. He took time out of his work to talk with us about the restaurant and local things to do. We were very impressed with the service and quality of food. We highly suggest stopping in for dinner. We will definitely be back.
