I've eaten here at least 5 times in the last two years and I'm confused by some of the posts. The food is very well prepared and delicious. The pork chops and fish and chips are the best in the area for sure. I usually sit in the bar if there's no music. The service is always great. Last night Sandra waited on us and the service was friendly and she was quickly available. The dining area could use new carpet I suppose, but the restaurant business is tough right now so it didn't matter and certainly didn't take away from the great food and service. I went to the Steak Loft on Easter Sunday to celebrate my mom's birthday. I was able to get a reservation, which was nice. When we arrived, we were seated quickly in the lounge. I had sat in the lounge before, and it was loud as they had live music, but this trip, there was no entertainment, so the noise level was fine. We had a round table, which is something I always appreciate as I feel it helps facilitate conversation. The server was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the 11-ounce sirloin, cooked medium. My sides were the house salad and a twice-baked potato. The salad was excellent, and I appreciated that any salad on their menu was available as a side included with the entree. This was a take on a chef salad with salami and provolone. I had the Italian dressing. The salad was very good wth fresh veggies and was pretty substantial for a side. Before I continue, I need to say that this was the second time at the Steak Loft and my first visit; the food was very well made. I say this because that was not my experience this visit. My sirloin was a nice cut of meat, but it was cooked medium well, and that made it a bit dry for my taste. They have a few sauces you can include, and I went with their horseradish sauce. It was nice, but I wanted a little bit more horseradish kick to it. The potato ended up being very good, but I had to send it back as it was cold in the center. Not cool, but cold like it was right out of the refrigerator. My mom also had the potato, and hers was cold as well. They quickly brought out 2 new potatoes for us, as I had indicated, and they were cooked well. The meal ended on a high note, though. I made the reservation on their website and was asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. I selected "birthday" and didn't think anything else about it. We were all surprised when a dessert came out for my mom, and the server led in the Happy Birthday Song. We were all shocked. It was also comped, which was such an appreciated touch. Honestly, it made us all pretty happy. All in all, I think this was a fluke of an experience in regards to the food prep and quality. Stopped in while in the area. We were seated right away on a Monday evening, at a nice table by the window. Did notice the ambiance was a little dark but each table had a candle on it. Drink orders were taken right away, and then our meal order. Was surprised at the quickness of the food coming out. Appetizers were rather quick. The black chowder was nice and thick, creamy and tasty. Salad was plentiful. Our entrees came out in a good amount of time. Steaks were cooked to our specifications. I stopped here for a late lunch on a Sunday in mid summer. There were few dinners here so we had our choice of the lounge or dining room. We chose the lounge which was casual. The decor is loft like with a sea faring theme. It is located right off I-95 next to Mystic Village making it a convenient spot for travelers plus it has a parking lot. Our service was efficient and friendly. We split the Stonington scallops wrapped in bacon for starters. They were tasty but were lukewarm. OK, so there's something up with this place. We almost didn't go here because of how low the reviews were, but there were so many cars outside. And to our surprised these yelp reviews do not reflect the experience we had. This place has character and the food was awesome. It's definitely bar food but still great bar food. Additionally, they have an amazing happy hour for food and drinks. We were so surprised by how this did not match the reviews on yelp. We actually asked the waiter what the deal was.... They said that they have been recently getting bombed with bad reviews and believe it's due to a competitor or landlord issue. I went there yesterday for the first time! The food was delicious and reasonably priced for the happy hour- $9 for the steak loft sandwich! I took a star off because the service was very slow, so i would suggest having more servers work during busier times! I had the Sea Hag beer for $7 as well, which was their happy hour price. We walked in right at the end of Happy Hour. Their menu was really good having drinks and food for 4 to 7 dollars. I had the Caesar salad which was decent. I wish it had more croutons and cheese. I also got the French Onion Soup which I wish had a little more seasoning. My mom's friend got NE Clam Chowder which she said was good. My mom got the house salad which was decent. On the regular menu, we ordered wings and fries. The wings were the butter black pepper ones. They were cooked well. The sauce was not coming through like I had hoped but still wasn't horrible. Their blue cheese was not my fave. It was too pungent. I like a milder blue cheese. The fries were thickkkkkkkkkkkk "shoestrings". They needed some salt and pepper. The service was bleh. The bartender, since we were at the bar, was not warm and welcoming. It seemed like every time we had a question, he was annoyed. I know places will be busy but when you see him laughing with others who are regulars, you would think he would be invested in new customers just as much to make them into returners. On a recent visit with my wife, I was very disappointed in the change of quality, service and value. I ordered a steak and cheese, no onions. The sandwich arrived chock full of onions. My wife ordered a bacon grilled cheese. Both sandwiches were lukewarm and the fries were also. The server offered to create new sandwiches, but due to a time crunch for a nearby appointment, we were not able to wait. Very disappointing lunch. We were sat in a family dining area, directly next to a party of 17 (I counted) with lots of children acting like children (loud). No reason we should be seated here. Ordered drinks. I had a whiskey sour. It was unpalatable, totally undrinkable. I informed the server, who removed it from my bill without me asking. I ordered the Rib Eye steak ($48), the best cut on their menu. The steak was thin, no marbling, not seasoned, none of the hallmarks of a Delmonico steak. I only ate half of it, didn't even bother to box up the rest. My wife had a bottle of cider, and the fish n chips, which were absolutely fine. But this restaurant isn't called the Fish N Chips Loft. Disappointingly, We would have had a better time at Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn. I think this is a tourist trap kind of place. I don't think too many locals go here. read more

After living in the area for a couple years we decided to try this 51 year old restaurant. The decor and furnishings appear to have not been updated in about that time. But that is the only area where this place is lacking. The service, food, and value are tremendous. We began with some complimentary rolls and very hearty pours of wine by the glass served by amazingly friendly and knowledgeable servers. The menu is simple and classic old-timey steakhouse as expected. Each entree comes with soup or salad and you can select any salad to start with for no up charge. Also you can have any sauce you'd like with the steaks. We had the ribeye (a bit small for the price point) and the steak and stuffed shrimp combo which was fabulous. Two huge stuffed shrimps with a 5-6oz tender steak cooked perfectly. We were so pleased with the food and service we decided to pop into the bar after - where there was a lively band playing and a ton of folks enjoying that scene. Mixed Experience at Steak Loft - Great Starters, Disappointing Steaks After a lovely day in Mystic, my family and I decided to try the Steak Loft. We had a 5:30 reservation and were seated right away. Our server was polite and efficient, and the service overall was great. We started with soups, and each one was delicious. My husband enjoyed the clam chowder, which he said was creamy and flavorful. I had the French onion soup--also excellent--and our daughter loved her tomato bisque. I also had a house salad that was fresh, crunchy, and very tasty. My husband and daughter shared the specialty fries and really enjoyed those as well. Unfortunately, the entrees didn't live up to the strong start. My husband ordered the steak and shrimp. While the shrimp was large and well-cooked, the steak was underdone and lacked flavor. I had the ribeye, and it was very underwhelming--not what I'd expect for a $48 cut of meat. Bottom line: for a steakhouse, the steaks were just so-so. Steak loft has been a staple to the Mystic Ct area for many years. While its still quite a tourist attraction (IMO only a result of ease on and off Route 95) I have seen the experience go from what would otherwise be a 5 star, to a 3 star. The food doesn't seem to by as fresh and menu has become as basic as it gets. I will say they have some very nice happy hour specials and that's about the only reason I continue to patronize( that and the fact I'm only 5 minutes up the road). The ability to play keno while at the bar drinking a beer is a perk as that can make for a fun Sunday football afternoon when the weather isn't nice enough to be outside soaking in some vitamin D. That said, the ambience is quite dark and could definitely use a makeover, a complete reinvented vibe could turn this around. My daughter, my wife and I went to steak loft restaurant in Olde Mistick Village on Sunday May 18, 2025. The restaurant wasn't very busy. We sat in the bar area at a table. After a few minutes to waitress came over and asked us if we want drinks. We got our drinks pretty normal. We looked over the menu and we placed our orders. I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon and french fries my wife got a plain chicken sandwich on a roll with chips. My daughter got chicken fingers and french fries. We also ordered a small order of buffalo wings. The waitress asked us if we wanted dinner rolls and we said yes. The couple next to us ordered after us and asked for dinner rolls and they received them right away. I had to ask the waitress three times for our dinner rolls. They finally came when our dinner came, which was about 20 minutes later. It was very dim lighting in this room. The cheeseburger I ordered medium was actually raw and I couldn't tell right away. Ate half the burger and couldn't eat anymore. My wife said her chicken was so dry and stringy that she ate one piece of it and that was it. My daughter said her chicken fingers were good. The honey, mustard sauce that she ordered with. It was a couple of days of being out of date and it smelled funny she said. We don't send food back as a general rule of ours. They charge $3.95 for a soda and then they charge you $3.95 for a refill. My cheeseburger was $20 without fries and they charge me $24 up charge for french fries. Our total bill was over $80 without the tip $95 with the tip. The waitress was terrible. Her attitude was just not nice at all. The food was not worth $80. We do not mind spending money on good food in a good atmosphere but when the food is terrible raw cheeseburger and the waitress has an attitude like we're bothering her every time we talk to her that's just not fair her bad day turned into our bad day. Thanks a lot steak loft for ruining our Sunday. One thing is for certain this will never happen again because I will never enter this establishment as long as I live. We would not in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. This is not our first experience with this restaurant. We've tried it three times now all with pretty much the same results. This steakhouse is located in the same lot as the Mystic Aquarium so if you don't pay attention (like me) you'll have to do a huge loop around to get back in there. I was invited by a friend who happens to live in Connecticut so I was excited to try this restaurant. We had reservations for 630 and I was so amazed that it was already very crowded. The dress is very casual for most, and then some of us still like to show up looking our Best! We started off with drinks and the margaritas were excellent. The waitress was very cordial and very attentive. We both chose the ribeye for our entree ($39.00). This came with a potato and soup or salad. I chose the French onion soup and while I've definitely had better, it was smothered with cheese and we all know anything smothered with cheese is a good thing. The steak was cooked to perfection with a nice exterior char. The waitress was kind enough to bring a couple of different dipping sauces which were great. I was told this restaurant had a fabulous salad bar but now due to the fear of Covid they have discontinued it for now. This meal was very good. My only issue is the cosmetics of the dining areas. The floors are covered with old carpet which is mind boggling. It looks like they spent money on the nice large bar area but definitely not in the area where you'll spend time and good money to eat. Ambiance is an important part of the dining experience in my opinion, and if you're going to charge prices close to Flemings or Ruth's Chris for a decent steak, you should invest in some cosmetic updates. We were very disappointed with the way this place has gone downhill. The food was only decent, not much flavor and dried out. The quality was not reflective of the prices on the menu. Our server got our orders wrong, repeatedly, and had to keep going back to the computer to fix. Apparently, it was a new computer system (or maybe she didn't have proper training?) but when half the order comes out and people don't know when the other parties meals are coming, it creates confusion. We came for dinner on a Saturday night. This place is pretty big inside. Even when the lot looks full, there is always room inside. We were seated pretty quickly. Our waitress, Stacey was prompt and friendly with a sense of humor. My husband had 3 mai tais, so obviously those were good! We started with the nachos. The chips were a bit salty but overall, they were delicious. I got potato soup while my husband got clam chowder. He only ordered it because he heard someone near us order it! He loved it. The potato soup was yummy, too! My marinated chicken was juicy and flavorful. They keep the skin on to hold the flavor in! The sweat potato waffle fries are crispy and yummy!! It's not fancy or upscale at all. It's a casual reliable reasonably priced local steak house. Probably one of the few local restaurants that is still affordable. THEY FEATURE AN AWESOME HAPPY HOUR: 4-6 pm IN THE LOUNGE ONLY with a nice array of soups, salads, appetizers & sandwiches for $4-7 which is a steal nowadays. They also feature draft beer, wine & cocktails at an reasonable price. The space itself is rustic with dark open beams & barn board, the Lounge particularly is open & airy. It could use a full renovation as the rugs & general decor is pretty worn but it's not a deal breaker for me. There are 4 large elevated flat screen tvs in the lounge which is great. They also have great classic rock background music that is comfortably & respectfully audible. You are not screaming at others during a conversation. Lol The bartender recommended the NE Clam Chowder & the shaved prime rib Steak & Cheese Sandwich with mushrooms & onions. The soup was a cup of your typical creamy New England Chowdah packed with potatoes & clams. It was served with those yummy oyster crackers. It was hot, tasty & satisfying. The sandwich came with homemade kettle chips. It was a full portion & pretty good. The bar staff are gracious, kind, polite, respectful & seasoned. They are effortlessly on top of everything which is fabulous. Drinks are solid too. I like this place. It's easy to settle in & it has an easy going local vibe. I will definitely be returning to try other menu items. Again, low key & nothing fancy. The wedge salad looked good as did the steaks.
