We were waiting for 45 minutes before my husband flagged down the waitress (she hadn't checked on us) and he asked where our food was. We were clearly forgotten about. Our waitress comped our wings which we thanked her for but the fact that we had to wait that long to even be noticed and then wait further still for food is ridiculous. The Engine Room is a quick walk from the shops on busy West Main St and East Main St in downtown Mystic. Our attentive server, Emily, went above and beyond making sure our party of three was well taken care of. Even though she had several other tables, she made us feel like we were her only customers. Though new to this restaurant, she confidently gave food and drink suggestions like she's been there forever. I got the loaded potato soup and the spinach salad with a specialty lemonade cocktail. We had a nice day in the RI area while on our family vacation. 8-26-25. We looked up restaurants and this one sounded good. Drove about 25 minutes to get there. We were seated. The server stopped by and took drink orders after a while. Then things turned south. The receipt says that his name is Titus. I just found the receipt. He kept attending to other (seemingly more important) tables and wouldn't even make eye contact with us. We sat and sat--long enough to have gone into the kitchen and cooked the food ourselves! All he had to do was acknowledge us and say he would be with us soon. But nope--nothing. We would have left but we were all hungry and had already read over the menu for so long that we didn't want to start from scratch at another place. And we didn't know the area. Anyway one of us got his attention and he had the nerve to bark "I SEE YOU"! Can you imagine? This was so rude. His attitude was terrible. Our family all just looked at each other in disbelief. And Mr Titus even had a server assistant. So he didn't even have to run the food. I took it upon myself to walk up to him at his POS station by the front door where we wouldn't be heard in front of other patrons. It was out in the open between the patio and entry door. I nicely/quietly told him that I just wanted to tell him one-on-one that we were all upset by his comment. He took offense to this and said that he would tell his (male) manager. Told him that was the end of our interaction and we just wanted to leave. So that wouldn't be necessary. Then a female manager (not the man he was referring to) came over to the table and stood up for him over and over again with excuses. And just made things worse! She kept rambling and never once offered any compensation for our awful experience. She could have taken something off our bill for leaving us sitting there forever. Or even offered a dessert. Or SOMETHING. But indeed she did nothing. Our bill was almost $200. Food was fair. I am very familiar with the service industry. The manager seemed to insinuate that we didn't know how things worked. Oh not so--my daughter is a server in a nationally famous steak restaurant in Indiana. So I'm quite familiar with how life works. Thank goodness she wasn't with us on this family trip or she would have lost her mind after hearing his rude comment and bad service. She would never treat guests like that. Plus we didn't do anything wrong except try to get our order taken! Anyway, this has been eating away at me since our vacation which ended days ago. Titus ruined our experience when we were hoping to have a nice lunch in CT! Not sure if the restaurant owner sees these reviews. But I'd be more than happy to call and chat about it. read more

First time back here since our last visit in 2019 and absolutely still one of my favorite burgers ever! The Mushroom Mae featuring Mystic Cheese CO's famous Melinda Mae cheese (similar to a creamy brie), mushrooms and double patty. It's absolute perfection! You also have to order the hush puppies, they're such a hit and even featured on their happy hour menu. I would definitely be happy ordering these alone. This is one of my favorite spots to hit up while I'm in Mystic. This trip we sat near the Chef's Table which was fun and a unique experience! We ventured out of the norm and tried a few new dishes including the brussels and the chicken burger. Both were phenomenal. The Engine Room has been my go to Mystic CT restaurant for many years. I have never been disappointed. They have a great selection of craft beers. My wife had the Cobb Salad and I had the Chipotle Chicken sandwich. The Cobb salad is always amazing. The bacon chunks are so delicious and the fried soft boiled egg is just magical. The hush puppies were a bit too crunchy for my liking and I generally like crunchy textures. The rosemary lemon butter was cool but I don't think this is a must do. The chopped salad was surprisingly good and creative. It comes with cornbread croutons and the grilled chicken seemed like their rotisserie. This. Place. Is. GREAT! To start, we arrived around 10:50am on a Saturday, but no matter, they let us in and sat us 10 minutes early! (I'm glad we were early because this place was full in no time for lunch) Our very personable waitress promptly asked us what we'd like to drink, and upon delivering our drinks took our food order. My wife wanted to eat light, so she ordered the mussels (pictured) and I was hungry for a steak (hey, we're on vacation - steak for lunch, why not)?!? The steak frites (also pictured) sounded delicious and boy did this meal deliver! It was a flavor explosion! Upon the food being delivered, and seeing my 'frites' swimming in sauce, I said, "ugh! Soggy fried potatoes! What a dumb way to serve this!!" Turns out; 'the dummy' was me! The steak + the potatoes + the sauce were AMAZING together! Great texture (not soggy); the potatoes are cooked enough, plus the texture of the steak holds up well to the moisture the sauce brings to the bite. I'd happily eat this again! (Not to mention that the steak was cooked perfectly!) Food + 1 mixed drink + tip was ~ $90 (but it was worth it all around) Lastly, the restaurant itself is pretty unassuming - clean, casual dining with a touch of modern rustic, appointed with comfortable seating - I love a good booth table, and they had them here! Horrible Service. I chose this place due to the menu since they had gluten free options and for their bourbon list. It was my hubby birthday and for his gift I was treating him to dinner and a 100 glass of Pappy Van winkle Burbon. We were both very excited. We arrived on a weekday last week Thursday at 445pm. The place didn't have the water views it touted which was still ok- as we had spent the day shopping downtown and in the village and we were ready for some drinks and a good meal. Upon entering we saw the bar and majority of the seating is all high table tops and chairs. There was one section of lower tables that just had a party of 4 getting ready to leave. I requested a lower table and was told no even though the whole section was empty. I explained to the hostess that my husband was just injured at work ok his hips and knees and we wouldn't be able to do the high tables at this time. Again she told us we could not sit there as they had reservations. I asked again for every table and she said yes. Then I said when and she told me 630pm. I said so you can't seat us at 445 to eat it's my husbands birthday and we drive here and I was told I didn't need a reservation when I called for a Thursday night. The place was not packed it was pretty empty except for the bar and 2 tables outside. She said we could sit there but we would have to vacate by 6 and be done with dinner. Well it was empty si that shouldn't have been hard to do. She sat us at dirty table for 2 against a wall near the waiter/ waitress station. I tried to flag down a waitress to clean the table and I was ignored as they all stood and talked at the wall behind us. I even asked one to get us our server. I am assuming the hostess told them not to wait on us at 4 waiters standing around and we sat for 15 minutes no lie with no one approaching us. I would have gotten up and asked for the manager any other time but I didn't want to make a stink on my hubby birthday. We waited 20 minutes and walked out. The lost out on a large check as we were planing on 2 $100 drinks and dinner. If this is how they treat people celebrating a special occasion I can't imagine how they are treated on the regular. The floor and tables and seats were dirty and had crumbs on them when it was empty I can't imagine what it's like if it's busy. Glad I didn't check out the bathrooms. read more

We always come to Engine room for a drink and some food every-time we swing through mystic. I've had many things on the menu, as well as many cocktails here and nothing has ever been disappointing. They have a great beer selection, and some innovative drinks on their menu. Their food selection is well rounded and there's something for everyone.
